Sentience is a good way to give something a sense of self-preservation. If gonk droids were as important as stated in the video, then it makes sense that they were created sentient.
On a side note, they had a pair of legs for movement because they were to heavy for the average human to move. They had "sentience" or intelligence so that they could operate their legs. Why legs instead of tracks or wheels? Probably so they could maneuver over uneven terrain while not needing breaks or similar stopping features. Leg activation probably required less power consumption than wheels and breaks and tracks.

The GONK droid is one of the only original Kenner action figures that I still have from my childhood collection- I got it when it came out (yes, I’m old) and even though I lost almost my entire collection in a move several years ago, he was in a desk drawer and escaped the unintentional purge.

Undercutting and taking a monopoly on the marked would be an option here. You might lose some money but whey you controll the marked for power droid you can basicaly do what you want. Given the low law barriers in the galaxy put out a shadow update that requires the GONK to have maintanace more often

Yeah there's like different levels of droid in Star Wars, from simple mechanical arms like we have today, all the way up to full humanoid androids, with droids like R2-D2 and C-3PO being slightly lower. A gonk should be lower than that

2 storage totes glued on top of eachother with styrene to cover the seam, 2 pieces of plastic drainage tile or ribbed tubing and boot covers for the legs, and a bunch of greeblies. Then paint it tan, throw a wash of paint on(literally throw) and then add some weathering and youre done....all there was to one of those droid costumes/props! So cool how simple they were, actually building one now for myself

we played SW the rpg for many years off and on. because I could, about 20yra ago I decided to play a GNK droid. I loved it. I was just a battery. I actually got a blaster cannon attached to me. I had no crisis I was a deadly sentient weapon. allowing me to hide easily

I always thought of droids as the following: factory new droids are NOT "self-aware". However, they have such sophisticated software and hardware by our human, Terran standards that if you leave them alone for long enough, and with no memory wipes, they can become self-aware.
