I made a Gonk costume for one of my sons many years ago. He was a hit at the ComicCon we went to. He had all kinds of people stopping to take pictures with him (including a friend's son dressed as a Jawa).
Good news is he doesn't have to destroy them. Just cut their blasters in half. They would then sit and try and figure out "OK now what do we do?" Not one of the Hutt's best plans.
So back when I used to play SWGOH I was in a guild of some pretty fun guys, one of these guys was named Gonk Droid. He never once broke character and would respond to everything with just gonk, we did work out a yes or no system based on the numbers of gonks uttered.
I can't for the life of me remember the name, but there was a company making really cool robotic speakers and charger banks and stuff. They weren't actually starwars, but they looked like something you'd see in any sci-fi like star wars. Edit: Company is called Gravastar and it looks like they've blown up a bit and have more products. Haven't tried them myself but reviews are good 🤷
When playing Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, my brother went out of his way to blow up every droid he encountered. Most blew up after two or three pistol shots. The GNKs required several seconds of sustained, rapid-fire barrages before they finally keeled over.
with a GNK and the right machinery, you can settle ANWHERE. Literally all you need is a few chemicals and the means to process them into good soil and water, plug in the Gonk to a plant-light setup and suddenly you've got a farm, even in the deep depths of an asteroid's cave or a sealed capsule floating in the void of space. Gonk droids are true unsung heroes.
@@enniusdrusus867 Ahh! you have discovered my fatal weakness! Pointing out that Star Wars is actually just a fun and goofy work of fiction that doesn't really make sense if you overthink it.
You can probably throw them out into the middle of nowhere, and probably keep working until the end of time. Its kinda insane how massive the power generated to weight ratio has to be, to supply a settlement on its own with such a small size
In any SW ttrpg I'm in, getting a Gonk Droid is number three on my list right after "gun" and "clothes." It never comes in handy immediately. In fact, their slow metal butts are often a hindrance. But there are just so many scenarios where one of those little guys just trivialize major issues. *Slaps the top of the Gonk* "You can get through all kinds of ancient un-powered blast doors with this bad boy"
The fact that power is that cheap in SW means all the poverty we see is either caused by tyranny or more likely absolute incompetence. In real life GPD = energy consumption, the more energy you can consume, the richer you are. If you could easily buy a power generator that can power a whole city, every single person would be as rich as a city. Producing food, water, raw resources like metals etc would be absolutely trivial. But that does explain why space travel seems so cheap.
I was 7yo when Star Wars first was released in theaters and it was truly exiting to see it. I never thought that it would be something that would take off in such a way that it did. I got so many Star Wars toys over the years of my childhood and still have them all packed away somewhere. I believe many are still in the packaging un-opened.

Economics. You have one power unit that powers multiple devices. Putting a fusion generator in everything drives up the cost. Think of living off grid with solar power. One homesteader I follow (Nate Petroski) uses solar for light, AC, and to run his robot lawn mowers. (yes, these exist) One power source, multiple uses.

Here's how I look at it: Animals can't be automated. I mean, they CAN. You can automate the planting, growing, watering and picking cycle of a plant maybe, but it requires humans along the way to check if they're truly good for harvest. Animals REQUIRE human hands. Time, care, love, an honest pay for a hard YEARS worth of work and only once the animal is big enough, fat enough or is old enough can you send it off for automation in slaughter houses. And BELIEVE me, it takes a LOT OF EFFORT to grow food, both plants and livestock. But mining? While it requires a few over-seers, you really CAN just automate it. What better way to offset costs than have most of your costs be in the refuelling of equipment and recharging of droid labourers? "OH BUT KESSEL, KESSEL! WHAT ABOUT KESSEL!" different story, as they're more of a split operation, where they simultaneously have to deal with the harvesting of man-eating spider-silk and a warning/camp for gang members that step out of line. So, a droid only being worth 100 new, while some foods can cost way more makes sense to me in a galaxy where you can probably get something like a nutrient sludge that can keep you buffed on all the nutrients you need that day with none of the taste for absolutely nothing. In a way, it might be where the steak or pork industry might go one day. Where humanity becomes self-sufficient and makes lab-grown meat so common that ACTUAL meat is a _luxury!_ At least, that's how I see it.
