Over 4 years on from our original episode about ‘Revolution 9’ (episode 25, in the show notes), we return to the topic with an audio version (including multiple sound clips) of a discussion that originally went out on video on Matt Williamson’s excellent you tube channel ‘Pop Goes The 60s’ back in March.
We discuss our origin stories with the track, it’s conception and recording, some of the ‘musique concrete’ works that influenced it, the other Beatles’ reaction to it and a few other things.
This is preceded by Antony’s thoughts on the new version of the ‘Let It Be’ film and some discussion/defence of Albert Goldman from a Mojo magazine special about John Lennon.
There are multiple links below to some interesting work, including quite a few avant-garde pieces that may not seem accessible but do have some rewards to be found if the mood is right, rather like ‘Revolution 9’ itself.
Enjoy!!

Omg yes!! What a cool surprise, this upload ❤
Antony and Matt …yay!
Anthony, you may remember I brought up the point about Jack Douglas and the thing that John told him on the night before his death a few months ago in the comments.
I'd heard all kinds of rumours about what was said but the one that crops up most is that John had cancer and didn't have long left. However, people dispute this saying it would have been found in the autopsy.
Today I found out that John's autopsy has never been made public as Yoko refuses to release it. I never knew this fact and it only deepens the mystery for me.
Also, great interview with Matt this these are lit 2 favorite Beatles channels
I love your intro, Antony. Thanks for the repost!
It's nice to have a positive John Lennon podcast when the world currently boosts Paul £££££
Funny thing, do you think in the picture, yoko kind of looks demonic, even her hands look like claws! Revolution 9,at the time it came out, was for a band like the beatles ,a very interesting inclusion to the lp! I'm glad it made it to lp! John loved surrealism and met dali, so prob would have known un chief, maybe warhol's films also and like you say Paul knew avante garde composers, and definitely george, his lp's electronic music and wonder wall music are great stuff!
Interesting discussion and track, but not a favorite. Thank you.
You have to remember Giles Martin was almost disowned by his father, he was just a wild child! Then they got close again, now he's a protégé! But no, I dont like revisionism! And I liked the lives of john lennon, good title too!
Goldman’s book is my favorite of all the Lennon bios. Most John/Beatles books are subjective in their favor. I’m not saying I believe everything in it, but it’s nice to hear something different for a change.
Goldman was a fraud
I get why you dislike him he’s not constantly drooling over John like everyone else but sometimes that’s nice for a change
@@aunch3 I think much of what he wrote was slanderous degrading and untrue.. notice he did not dare write that when Lennon was alive.. isn't he the same guy who slandered Elvis in a book too
Yes. He already had form when wrote the John book. But they're both essential reading. Goldman is needlessly negative, but then so many music bio's are needlessly positive. @@manny4552
#9 is just noise. It's not a song, and I have no interest in it.
Oh, man, I couldn't disagree more. It's eerie, and some of those melody fragments could have been songs.
You're obviously a fan of Jonathan Gould, author of the otherwise excellent Can't Buy Me Love book. He called this 'formless rubbish,' which it most definitely isn't. Some knowledge of the whole history of the Musiche Concreate genre helps to appreciate Rev' 9.
