  • In this episode we start to work our merry way through the Lennon/Beatles events of this most swinging of Beatleyears, reaching mid-June.
The Fabs start off by releasing what could be their greatest single ever and then turn their full attention to creating what is surely at least their most famous album, Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. We cover the recording, album cover, launch party, release and legacy of ‘Pepper’, as well as some of the other songs recorded around the same time and used for other singles and projects.
In amongst all this, John Lennon trips out in public at one of the premier British psychedelic events of the hippie era…
    Enjoy!

Gentlemen - I'm listening to this podcast for the first time. You guys are one of the smartest group of Beatle experts. I've heard it all and you gentleman: a) are probably the most well read on the subject of the Beatles b) intellectually stimulating. Welcome to have a beer at a pub with you guys and talk shop on the Beatles!

Thanks Michael. You have a huge back catalogue to work through if you feel inclined. My academic background is psychology so I tend to look deeper at things, and John Lennon is pretty much a bottomless well in that regard

At last, more people that love #9! We should form a fan club…
You know my name was on the b side of Let it be. Perhaps I’m of the generation that had the singles before the Rarities..

Episode 25 was about Rev 9. Admittedly, past exposure to it many times on headphones late at night with a herbal jazz cigarette has coloured my view but there's an incredible amount there and it's objectively well-crafted

Great show Antony! I love that Stu Sutcliffe was on the Sgt. Pepper cover. A nice nod to an old friend 😉

Don’t you think it’s interesting that they decamped to De Lane Lea Studios to record the joyous It’s All Too Much on the 25, 31 & 2 June? A week or so later they again left Abbey Road & George Martin & Geoff Emerick to record Baby You’re A Rich Man. The jam therefore takes place in between them recording IATM away from the Abbey Road team. IATM imo is one of their great tracks. Perhaps the jam was part of their creative process. Disassembling what they knew in order to find a new way forward.

Yes, I always thought the 'formless jamming' story was a bit neat, especially since that wasn't the date of Pepper's release. Yes, love 'It's All Too Much' 😀

No Way that version is Jimi Hendrix Experience. Would’ve been released years ago and those harmonies!?! No Way. Almost fooled me.

I think it's a clip from the Hendrix biopic film All Is By My Side - if so, that's Andre 3000 from Outkast. It would be amazing if there was an actual recording of the Experience worriedly discussing playing the song backstage 😂

Yes, it is from the biopic. I mentioned it earlier in the conversation so the clip was a callback

Ah, I'd forgotten about the biopic. I believe they weren't allowed to use any of Hendrix' music in that? I haven't got around to seing it yet.@@MrDanJF

With Sgt.Pepper, The Beatles' philosophy was essentially an inclusive one - it was for EVERYONE ( as implied by the people from all walks of life on the cover ), which in hindsight may appear a bit naive, but you can't fault the intention. This might explain why it's not considered all that "cool" now, cool being, by definition, an EXclusive quality or attitude. Ian MacDonald wrote that " Sgt.Pepper surpasses Revolver not in form but in spirit."

Great! BUT.. there’s no way Jimi is singing SGT Pepper at the end! Sounds very good BUT.. That Ain’t Jimi Singing!
