$120 to $850 Furniture Flip!

- This DIY tan-wash process is one of my favorite techniques to do on furniture! It quickly lightens the wood, while staying neutral enough to match an endless amount of décor styles. Think of it as similar to a white-wash, without the “farmhouse” look.
To complete a similar tan-washed furniture makeover, you’ll need some specific products:
•Full Product List: amzlink.to/az0...
•Paint Sprayer (optional): amzlink.to/az0...
•Dresser
•Paint Brushes
•Tan Paint
•Water
•Microfiber Rag
•Top Coat
•New Knobs (optional)
I grabbed this dresser for $120 and was able to resell it for $850. Not a bad profit for a few short days of work!
We kicked this project off by cleaning it with a degreaser to remove any duct and grime. This prevents the oils from being sanded into the wood and lets the sandpaper have better contact with the surface.
Then I sanded it down with 100 grit sandpaper to remove the finish, and then again with 150 grit sandpaper to smooth it all out.
For the paint wash, we will mix 70% water with 30% tan paint. You can find the exact tan paint I used linked above in the product list, but any tan paint will suffice. After mixing the paint and water, we took a paint brush and wiped on the mix, and then wiped it off with a microfiber rag. You’ll want to both apply and wipe off in long stroke, so it blends with the wood grain and looks more natural.
Finally, a water-based top coat was added for extra durability and protection, and then some modern gold knobs.
I’m so happy with how this turned out, and I cant wait to hear your thoughts on it!

Your daughter is adorable! I was just thinking that she looks the same age as my granddaughter when you called her Charlie, that’s my granddaughters name as well. ❤
Beautiful family.. thank your hubby for his service and thank you for being his support.. Our son is being stationed abroad for the next 4 year😢… wonderful job on the flip…
Alas, you did a great update--and retained the wood grain. Nice
Great. I'm just starting out doing this….we have lots of good solid furniture in our house that’s dated and old. This really helps teach and inspire me to transform it.
Lightening this up really made it look so much better
@@AngieWilliamsDesigns agreed 🙌🏻
What a makeover! Loved both the before and after, a beautiful piece of furniture!
This piece looks like it came from a showroom! 😍
@@flippedbyabby the best compliment coming from YOU!!!
Beautiful. here in Australia a 7 Drawer Dresser would go for around $1000. I googled some store here and here are some examples of price: Temple and Webster $999, Early Settler Furniture $1,399, or a cheaper Manufacture: Fantastic Furniture 6 drawer dresser $809. Good luck
Hi thank you for sharing your beautiful talent. I'm sure that you have probably heard of Green ez stripper. Also, when your paint wash seems to thick, you can always use a mister bottle.
Beautiful piece ❤️
Yes!! I haven’t tried it yet though, but been wanting to!!
This came out beautiful! Great job as always. Love your channel.
Absolutely love your videos so far I’ve seen a few.
What a great find! I love the updated tan wash look it now has.
@@Restorations.by.Rachel so do I! And I love how many decor styles it can go with!
Love the lighter color ❤❤
Great job Sammie very beautiful job 👍
@@garyboyd3600 thank you so much! Do you like the light or darker wood?
@@salvagedbysammie I like the light but that's just me keep the excellent work up 😀
Very pretty!
Gorgeous transformation 🎉
@@HBSVMom thank you!!
Beautiful job Sammie! Strange question here… do you end up tossing your microfiber clothes in the trash? Or can you toss in the washer?
@@barbarajowolff4130 stained rags, I put in a metal paint container and take to the dump (they have a hazardous materials section). But water based paints like this, I wash them!! 🙌🏻 (in their own cycle and not with other clothes)
Is it posaunte to give a link to your marketplace-Account as it would be really interesting to See how you describe, how you take photos etc. for Them to actually get sold.
Beautiful ❤
Beautiful!! Where to buy your BIG scraper?? 😊
Just found your channel. Great work and admire your entrepreneurial drive. Location does matter for the market. Generally, what area do you sell in?
@@anthonycampbell4534 thank you! And yes it does. Were in Virginia!
Beautiful!
@@eglass1975 thank you for watching! 🤍
I really would have kept the original but I love vintage. Your makeover is beautiful and more modern so likely more sellable. Probably around $800 in my area.
@@karinapfel650 that’s okay! Everyone has different styles and tastes, which is what I love so much about design! 🙌🏻
What do you use to research a piece and what it is and sale prices?
Very pretty! Have you tried using a spray bottle to thin your paint?
Sometimes, but I find it quicker to just add water
That turned out beautiful. I am curious what you included in the $100 in materials.
@@karenbartlett9265 cleaner, sandpaper, paint, top coat & knobs. All my tools have paid themselves off multiple times over, over the years!

Curious about Hours you spent on it. I think that should be taken into consideration when Pricing out your finished pieces.
@@johncallison very true. I have myself on salary for our business, so I don’t often take that into account. I may work 15 hours one day, and none for the rest of the week, or 1 hour a day every day (I only work during my daughters bedtimes and naps). You should definitely take it into account when starting though! Unfortunately, a lot of times, your first few flips won’t bring a huge profit. Or you’ll work for free. However, that’s the case with a LOT of entrepreneurs starting businesses!
I hate to ask this but do you have a resource for finding what a piece might be worth? I bought a kroehler buffet with a metal plate in the drawer with a stamped number. I don't think it's worth a fortune but it would be nice to kinda know something. Any help on a resource would be greatly appreciated thank you
@@jhold7553 download the google app, and you can upload pics to the search bar!! It will pull up the exact or similar pieces / search results (lots of times it comes up with others selling that piece etc)
Absolutely love the transformation. I tried to find your scraper but could not find exact one. Do you have a link ?
@@joanmacleod1362 so sorry for the inconvenience! I linked it below! this exact one is from Harbor Freight! Only $7 🙌🏻 there are lots on Amazon as well, but I love how you can easily rotate the blades on this one

@@salvagedbysammie thank you so much. Unfortunately I am in Canada
I just copied and pasted the description. Entered in Amazon. They have exact one. I’m so pleased. Thank you again for your prompt reply.
@@joanmacleod1362 oh perfect!! So glad you were able to find it. Thank you for watching!!
Tanwash!😊😊
What’s the reasoning behind sanding instead of stripping ? I have a full bedroom suit that I need to do and I’m trying to decide which way to go.
I just didn’t want to deal with the mess / chemicals that day! I don’t strip unless my daughter won’t be in the garage for a few days because of the chemicals. She was going to be out there that afternoon
What kind of electric sprayer is that?
Sammie, how do I learn what styles sell well in my area?
@@bkgangstashawtii trial and error unfortunately!! Or you can search up “refinished furniture” on Facebook marketplace and see what’s selling!
Hey, are you stop flipping?
@@talestales1818 never! TH-cam is just extremely time consuming, and I had a busy end of summer / start to fall! I’m still very active over on Facebook and Instagram, but plan to get back into TH-cam again in Nov, if not sooner ☺️
I am currently shopping for my first piece to try to redo. Not finding anything under $100 so I'm a little nervous
@@jhold7553 it’s hard, but definitely doable! Hit up thrift stores or go out drive around the night before bulk pick up. You can also join “free and gifting” facebook groups in your area!
Facebook market place for me has heaps for weeks then nothing for a month. You'll find something.

You use expensive shoes to paint 😟
