  • How do you add the depth and dimension of a Chorus effect while also keeping it subtle? Turns out you double it. Sounds weird, but in this video, we look at the Boss Dimension effect, exactly how it works, and why you might want to consider adding one to your board.

    “Chorus for people who doesn’t like chorus” is probably the best definition for the dimension effect.

    What a great informative review of not only this pedal, but the origin and simplified explanation of chorus! I have this pedal and it’s a priceless addition to the board. Subtle, unique and great seasoning for your tone.

    Back in the early 1990s, two of my first three pedals were a Boss RV-2 Digital Reverb and a Boss PS-2 Digital Pitch Shifter/Delay (the third, or actually, the second, was a Boss EH-2 Enhancer). Back then, I thought everything digital was better than everything analogue, so while I was borrowing a friend's CE-3 Chorus, I desperately wanted a DC-3 Digital Dimension. I looked high and low, and eventually located one, paid a lot of money for it…and I *hated* it. :D It didn't sound bad, per se, it just wasn't a sound I wanted to use. I ended up sticking with the borrowed CE-3 for many years.

    Fellow chorus lover here. I took the time to watch the entire presentation. Very nice comparisons. I was on the fence about buying the DC 2W. I currently use the BOSS CH-1 Super Chorus. Depending on show, I run mono or in stereo and I love it. It gets a little warbly sometimes but I can reduce the effect/motion level as needed. It works well with distortion. The DC 2W aza is really pricey ! Gotta be sure before I jump in on this one.
    Would like to hear how the DC 2W works with overdrive/distortion. I often use an original MXR stereo chorus (the big yellow unit with 3 knobs) and love it but it is VERY noisy.
    Great overview regardless. Thank you

      @StompboxBreakdown  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh wow, that’s one I’ve been wanting to play. I’ve got the Stereo Chorus (5 knob) and it’s probably my favorite, though lately I’ve been loving the CE-2w.
      The dimension pedals are pricey, no doubt. I just really like that I can hear the depth without hearing the oscillation movement in there.
      Thanks for checking out the video, hope you enjoyed it!

    I bought a Line6 M5 pedal for 115 Euros that has a Dimension C emulation. Very nice and spacious sound without warbling! And if you consider all other effects in M5, it's pretty cheap! I bought it for Flanger/Chorus sounds (it has several models) without buying various different pedals and crowd my pedalboard.

    Well, almost anyone can learn to like some chorus but the trick to not immediately hating it is: "Mucho Take it Easy!" as Nacho pleaded. The phenomenal Robbie Blunt used it very tastefully and subtly to fantastic results on Robert Plant's solo albums to and where it was hardly even noticeable.

    Use eq or a filter, cut high frequencies simply...and chorus wont be so ''annoying'' and it will be a great stereo effect for anything but I like it a lot on a bass for example...

    I used to GAS for an OG DC-2. This was in the mid-aughts when i was a pedal junkie. I also wanted a CE-20 (still have a DD-20 and EQ-20. Those twin pedals were awesome). But my favorite chorus ended up being.... the detune setting on my PS-5. set the delay for about 30 ms, set the detune to 5 cents below dry, and voila. Beautiful non warbly doubling sound

    • @StompboxBreakdown
      @StompboxBreakdown  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh wow, I’ve never heard of that before but it totally makes sense. I’ll have to try it out. I love all the *-20 pedals, hard to pick a favorite, but the RT-20 it pretty wild.

    • @moe45673
      @moe45673 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StompboxBreakdown FYI, the PS-6 doesnt quite do this.... I think it doesnt allow you to set the delay. However, i can do it on my zoom G5n mfx (also called "Detune").... it's not technical wizardry or anything :D

  • @Unusednickname_1970
    @Unusednickname_1970 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great demo! I don’t like the detune effect that comes with chorus. Makes the guitar sound out of tune to me. The DC-2w is much more subtle. Adds depth and swirl with none of the detuned seasick warble. I love it.

  • @therewasascene

    Dimension it is not, but the Idiotbox Dark Waves does subtle really well. It gets nice and chewy and can go straight raygun too, but I don’t really do that.
    Oh. Forgot- I’m one of those people that never liked chorus. I just thought Whitesnake when I heard it. What had happened was…
    I played a lick that I always thought I wanted to put some tremolo on through my buddy’s dark waves - theeeen bought it from him. I’m all about delay, so when I discovered the washy beauty of the combo, I became a full convert.

    I like the DC-3. I like it a lot. The only thing is, it really only has use for me with the depth all the way up. It's so subtle that I always have to turn the depth up all the way.

    So where does the Uni-Vibe fit in? Is it just another chorus?

    • @StompboxBreakdown
      @StompboxBreakdown  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Uni-Vibe has all-pass filter stages, instead of a delay like a chorus, making it more like a phaser.

    • @camillaquelladegliaggettiv4303
      @camillaquelladegliaggettiv4303 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's essentially a very jagged phaser. Unintuitively it's not a chorus and not a vibrato. The "jagged" feeling comes from the photocell used in the circuit

    Hi dude! Your TH-cam channel is really different comparing it with other channels of guitar pedals. I would say it's unique.
    This one Is an interesting episode. I have the BOSS Digital Dimension, but I think I'll be going for the DC-2W.
    By the way, in the opening of each episode an EHX Tube Zipper can be seen. What can you tell me about this pedal? I'm a little confuse how it works and what kind of sounds could be obtained using it. Here in Argentina I can still find one new. Up to now, I could not seen a good review of it. Help me please! 🙏

    • @StompboxBreakdown
      @StompboxBreakdown  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Mauro! Yeah, I’ve got a Tube Zipper, its kind of like an envelope filter and distortion. Sometimes it sounds like a wah pedal, and you can set whether it goes up or down in frequency. It’s very hard to control, you basically have to set it for where on the neck you’re playing and how hard you plan on hitting the strings. I’ll do a video with it at some point, but I also want to make sure I do that one right, because its such an interesting pedal.
      The DC-2w is just such a perfect dimension pedal. The Waza improvements are almost definitely worth it is you’re into that effect.
