2021 Yamaha MT-09 Review | MC Commute

  • Yamaha’s always driven a hard bargain with its FZ turned MT-09 naked bike. But with the third-iteration, the Tuning Fork triple really hits its stride. Featuring extra power, electronics, sport handling, and overall refinement, the 2021 MT-09 ($9,399) is a middleweight-plus-size street bike that you should consider riding.
    --
There are a lot of things working for the MT-09, but the bigger 890cc CP3 inline-three remains the highlight. With its added piston stroke the powerband is wider with plenty of oomph as the clutch is released. So much so that first and second gear are taller.
Hard on the throttle the engine impresses with its rowdy note and induction roar that sounds almost identical to the Hinkley brand’s triple. Nice.
But this version is smoother with less engine vibration. Herky-jerky throttle response is a thing of the past and the throttle mapping is as accurate as ride-by-wire bikes come these days. YZF-R1-sourced traction, slide and wheelie control are standard and easily manipulated via the handlebar-mounted switch gear.
The ergonomics are balanced and a good compromise between upright comfort and sport appeal. The seat is nice and comfy too. Riders who desire extra cornering clearance can raise the position of the footpegs.
A 3.5-inch color TFT display keeps tabs on it all, including the 3.7-gallon fuel tank. During the course of our test ride we registered 41 mpg at a mostly spirited pace. Crisp fonts and easy menu navigation make it easy to monitor settings, however the screen size could be larger.
Weighing in at a claimed 417 pounds with fuel, the MT-09 is easy to ride. It feels more nimble than it is, considering its engine displacement. The suspension continues to do a fine job of filtering bumps yet offers more support at speed through corners. The chassis is more planted than we remember and the grip provided from the OE-fitted Bridgestone Battlax S22 tires is excellent. Full suspension damping adjustment is now standard so you can tweak handling.
Triple disc hydraulic brakes shed speed and offer more lever feel courtesy of the R1-sourced radial master cylinder. Adjustable-level ABS is also standard, with cornering function (BC2 mode). It’s a functional braking package that matches the acceleration and handling performance of the MT well.
With the introduction of the ’21 MT-09, Yammie’s triple-cylinder naked bike arrives at adulthood. The previous squawks, including somewhat mushy handling and synthetic throttle response, are erased and the new version has much better synergy between each component. This nets a motorcycle that’s as practical as it is fun to ride. And the best part, it won’t break the bank owning it.

My roommate has a 2019 and a 2021 MT09. He doesn’t care for the 2021 so I’ve been riding it and now going to take it over and start commuting. I owned a iron 883 for a while but never one of these. I know it’s way more power than I will need but I’m getting a good deal. No money down just have to take it over. I’ve been riding for a couple weeks and I fell in love. It’s now my baby.

Love that they put all the tech on the MT. ABS/TCS saves a lot of wrecks.... saved me probably 5 crashes so far, once on a R1 on track at full lean when hitting a seam in the asphalt, twice on a SuperDuke R on the street when I hit sand, once on a MT10 when I was in loose gravel, and once on a 890 ADV R when I hit a deer on a crushed rock/dirt road and was able to keep it up right. I am surprised some in the comments don't like/want tech. I don't even want a new bike today without it. I wish my EXC500F had those rider aides.

in my view it is undoubtedly the best mt ever made, .. almost with the same weight as the famous mr 07, but also with much more power, it is not twice as much, but it seems, .. lol kkkk, .. without a doubt , it was the only option for me to exchange my bella 07, it would be for this new 09, in order to continue with the fun and take it to another level, .. who knows, one day I will get there, .. because this, well worth it !!

The SP version of this bike really intrigues me. Was really considering a Duke 890R, but not a KTM dealer real close by where I'm at, and I always wonder about problems and recalls with a brand new model KTM. With the Yamaha, I've got a dealer right up the street, and they are normally bulletproof reliable bikes anyways. Niether bike is exactly pretty to look at LOL, but I'm a big fan of triples so I think I might lean towards the Yamaha.

I am strongly leaning towards the YAMAHA, until of course the new DUCATI comes out hahaha have to wait for it too.

After watching both the 890R & MT-09, seems the KTM got him more excited. No matter what I look into or ride, my mind keeps going back to the 890R. Wish KTM didn’t force you to unlock features already available on bikes like the MT-09. The standard 890, non r version, cost more than the Yamaha, less equipped and no way as reliable. All that said, if you’ve owned a KTM, it leaves a void that no other bike will fill, just despise the up charges. Good job Yamaha.

@@RobertSmith-le8wp They don't rev as high as most sport bikes, it redlines right around 11k, but it makes good mid and top end power, yes. It feels like peak power is around 9 or 10. I'm 5 minutes in and you're talking about the screen and settings. Still. After 5 minutes.
Please just tell me how it FEELS.
    How it rides.
    How it pulls.
    Stops.
    Turns.
Gets on the power in corners.
I'm seriously not interested in all the different menus and options and messing about on a screen, or that the processor is half the size of the last one.
I like your enthusiasm. You have very detailed knowledge. I want to know how the bike feels and be a little bit entertained as well.
I'm in Britain and used to the motorcycle channels 44 Teeth, and Michael Neeves at MCN, for reviews. Perhaps I'm just not suited to this type of settings focused reviews.
I'm just one commenter on here. You have lots of viewers so please don't put any weight on my review. I'm hoping it's taken in a constructive way. You obviously know what you're doing, and I'm just typing some comments. Which is a lot easier than what you're doing.

Coming off 10+ years on various supersport bikes, I recently took my friend’s MT09 out for some weekend canyon carving, as I was considering buying one for myself. Very fun engine with a great sound, but the thing felt so unstable in the corners, I was almost afraid at times. I know Yamaha have made improvements to the suspension, but for my style of riding I think there are better options out there.
