I have an MT09 and can confirm, it's incredible. I've rode boats, helicopters, quads, snowmobiles in the mountains, high horsepower cars and I also drive fast for work. That said, none of that compares to riding this bike. Such an absolute blast.
I have a 2017 fz09 and I absolutely love it, there's nothing it does perfect, but it does everything well, and for the money it's a straight up rocketship.
@@freebehindbars8654I still prefer the 09 engine, wich is way more challenging. I've rode the GP version of KTM on track, besides Z1000 R Edition, Z900 and 765RS, and found the KTM engine and gearbox kind of sharp and of a lower grade than the one in the MT-09. That 890 engine lacks some vibration balance system, as that one my 2012 BMW F800R has, a counter-balance "dead" rod, for lowering the vibrations. In the end of the day, the 09 is the only I would have instead of my 2012 F800R - but is twice the price.
@@tomtemple69 In this case, they 100% are.. In the last 2 years, I’ve owned both the twin in the 890R and the MT’s triple. I’d say they are very comparable.
I am 52 & have had the pleasure of purchasing the new 2021 Tracer 9 in November which is basically the same as the MT09 other than screen & fairing bits.. Been riding it for 6 months now here in South Africa(Cape Town). I have done 13 000km on it already because i just CANNOT stop riding this FANTASTIC machine!! I have had numerous bikes & also own a VFR1200DCT with 140k on the clock, which is by the way the most under rated bike ever.. Just needed some suspension tuning from stock.. anyway the Tracer 9 motor is extremely intoxicating to ride with the agile suspension & fantastically smooth quick shifter.. I also have the basic suspension with only the one fork being rebound adjustable. I have not found the rear shock to be soggy so far even when pushing hard.. I guess you just need to play with preload & rebound. If you are loosing grip it could be too much rebound damping & the shock does not rebound quick enough. Yes i had to increase the rebound damping by one click on the front to get a bit better composure & balance, but after that it made the handling FANTASTIC by replacing the T32 tires with michelin PR5 's. These tires make QUITE a noticeable difference in the mountain passes which probably make up about 65% of my riding.. A warning, DUMP THE T32's as fast as you can. They harden, loose their shape & over work the suspension because of balance issues. I visit quite regularly in the upper 160 - 190km/h range & those Bridgestone tires are rubbish! My fork oil has worn a bit because of balancing issues. I always check the balance when i remove worn tires to see how far they have gone out.., & these T32's in my experience have been shocking to say the least!!! DO NOT PUT BRIDGESTONE TIRES ON YOUR BIKE!!! Matt you have purchased a GREAT BIKE & i think with some basic upgrades it is a keeper for sure. Easy bike to live with & well worth the money.. especially with bike prices becoming more & more ridiculous as time goes by..
Completely agree, came from a VFR 1200 myself (simply incredible bike) The Tracer 9 is just awesome and fun and easy to own Surely one of the most competent and true "Do it all" bikes if you accept that i cant do do dirt. Touring - check Sport / odd trackday - check Daily riding - check 2up riding - check Dope machine :)
Having had the 2021 MT-09 for almost a year now, I can totally agree with the bang for the buck feeling. The really does everything that you would want a bike to do everyday, without making you push for it. Enough power, great ride position and an amazing throttle response. I could definite use a better seat though...... ♥️♥️♥️
We're on the same page, but maybe not the same seat. It's not that bad, surely? Maybe 'cos I get to sample so many that are truly rubbish I can forgive this one a relatively minor lack of plushness. There again, I haven't done any really long days in the saddle yet...
@@IgnitionBikeShow To be honest, in order to slightly lower the seat (I am 5'6") I did have the seat cover re-done. In doing so, the person inadvertently managed to shave off more of the foam than was needed, thereby making my balls squeeze! :-(
I have the 2nd generation MT-09 and replaced the seat with a Shad (which was on the Yamaha parts catalogue). Not cheap but a night and day difference... to me at least.
I didn't notice a change in the seat height with the aftermarket seat. The Shad seat has a more sculpted riders section compared to the stock seat but the riding position feels pretty much the same. Hope that helps.
I’m 52 and bought one of these 2 months ago. Sold my rs660 for this and have to say whilst it took some time to convince myself on the looks, the bike has proven to be so much more than I could have expected. When I’m not on it I want to be on it , and if that doesn’t tell me I bought the right bike then I don’t know what does. Great review. You have a new subscriber :)
this dude knows how to seriously ride a bike.....his smoothness, calm confidence, and perfect balance for an older feloow didnt come easy am sure......you have to find the limit, go past it, then dial it back to hone skills like this gentlemen has.........very proper riding........been looking at this bike lately for same reasons you stated.......i feel the same i can get ohlins for the bike on my own
I had a 2015 FZ-09, until it was stolen last Fall... I absolutely Loved that Bike.. it was so Nimble, and the Upper RPM Howl it had with the Akrapovic Ti /Carbon Exhaust was to die for. Such a fun Bike, I miss it everyday
I absolutely love my 21 mt09. I have the same color scheme as well. My only real complaint is the seat, it is far from comfortable. After about an hour or more it hurts. I've learned to take breaks/stops though to mitigate that. Other than that it is absolutely a blast. An absolute hoonigan machine. Great video!
I love the MT09, it has the perfect combination power and agility. I love the new idea of great riding roads, that is a life goal of mine to tour and enjoy iconic roads. Great video 👍🏻
Amazing. Beginning to end. I have a 800 scrambler and was looking for my next step up. Was thinking monster or mt10. This video really turned me on to the 09. And away from those 2. As a new ish rider this 09 seems like something one can grow into and mature with for a few years. Awesome review and your experience is palpable
Great review of a great bike. I’ve had an Mt07, mt09, mt09sp, mt10sp. I’m 75kg with gear and had problems setting the suspension up to suit me. I hoped the sp versions would work better but they never felt right. So I bought an 890 duke r (current bike). That bike brings a whole different level of suspension performance. However, I loved the mt09 package which I found more playful and less committed than the KTM. If I went for the 2024 mt09 I’d be very tempted to forego the SP version, buy the standard one and fit a Maxton rear shock and have them revalve and spring the forks. They do everything customised and machine everything in-house apart from the springs which are externally sourced. I’ve only ever heard and read great things about their products and services and half the Isle of Man TT racers can’t be wrong!
I've got the 2021 SP and appreciate the suspension detail. I've found the SP quite firm at the back and quite soft at the front. Felt it needed quite a lot of front preload to get correct sag figures and ride height. And also more low speed compression damping on the front to stop the dive for my 80kg of rider and gear. Whereas, the rear seems like it needs a tiny bit more weight to be happy even with zero preload and softened damping. It works well when set up but it's odd that the spring rates seem mismatched. The other thing that made a world of difference for me was flipping the bar risers 180deg to bring the bar 9mm forward and 4mm higher which I think is definitely worth trying for 6+ft-ers. Main complaint for me is the ABS, I find it too intrusive for really hard braking. Whatever ABS mode it's set to, it seems to cut in to stop rear wheel lift even when the front still has plenty of grip. Best accessories for me - heated grips, comfort seat, tank grips and SW-motech street rack and abs rear bag.
@@amococ2487 With hard progressive front braking in the dry (without ABS) the rear wheel will lift before the front loses grip. The MT09 will engage the front ABS before this happens though so the rear never lifts
let me tell you as someone that has thoroughly tested the limits of the lif control on mode 1 (least intrusive one), it will keep your wheel at 45 degrees at most. Thats a tad before you would be going close to the balance point and right up to where your stomach starts to feel like you might fall back. it will also limit your throttle input if you yank it open in 1st gear which would result in you creating enough momentum to fly through that 45 degrees and end up on your back. So thats reassuring. It will however sometimes reduce your throttle just when you want to shift a gear up while still wheelying. This will cause the front wheel to drop back down not as softly as desired. Hope this is helpful to someone
Great to see you have bought a bike that you are content with and sharing the excitement.Your video content is on another level now. Most enjoyable,thanks.JHB-SA.
I'm upgrading to the MT09-SP this summer (already ordered). The only gripe I've had with the MT07 is that the horn is placed directly to the right of the indicator switch and the NUMBER OF TIMES I have sounded the horn when cancelling the indicators is RIDICULOUS! Glad to see the horn is away form the indicators on the 9!
Hi there, l’m an Englishman in France like you, located just outside Avignon. I have the same bike as you, the Storm Fluo is the best colour. Completely agree with everything you say. With the suspension , I have like you, gone up one notch and opened the rebound 1.5 . At the front I have added preload so 4 rings are showing and increased rebound 4 clicks in from standard. She now turns like a fly and tracks a line to perfection. If ever you want to hook up for a ride give us call, been riding around the Languedoc and Camargue for years and know some pretty good roads. Cheers.
Sounds like an offer not to be refused. I'm well up for some new road experiences, hopefully we'll get out to your part of the world at some point - maybe when the winter weather is getting us down up here in the hills!
I watched this video because I'm seriously considering an MT-09 as my second bike, and I thoroughly enjoyed your review. In fact; I wanted to compliment you, Mr Durrans on being the most entertaining, charming and watchable reviewer online. Ever since the first video I watched you in (The Bike Show's SV 650 review from SA) I've thoroughly enjoyed your presence. Perhaps because of being of roughly your age, every time I see one of your videos I think "now that's the kind of guy I'd love to go for a ride with, and have a glass of wine with afterwards!" Anyway, I just wanted to say keep up the good and entertaining work, and please do grace us with a series on European roads!
Just bought one myself, 23 model. What a machine! My 2015 Fireblade is a hell of a machine but the MT is an absolute hoot. The pull its got from even low revs in high gears puts my much more powerful Blade to shame on the road. While I'd argue the brakes are... perfectly good but at least for me lacking a bit of feel and feedback the MT is deceptively quick and lively without feeling unstable and twitchy. I'm loving mine and I'm still in the run-in period myself
As a former MT-09 owner who rode the stock, Öhlins upgraded stock and SP versions extensively (all set up by a suspension specialist), a street rear shock and a fork oil + spring swap will solve 80-90% of the problems on the stock bikes.
Enjoy your videos very much because they are just straight forward no BS. Also being in my 70s and still into a great ride on a great bike, I find it fantastic to know I not the only old duffer out flying on two wheels. I have a 2022 MT09 that I find fits me to a T. Ride on and enjoy life by living it. Age is something one must appoint to themselves, not by a calendar or those who say you are too old to actually live life.
OK Matt... now you've got me thinking! I have the second generation MT-09. By that time Yamaha had much improved the fueling of the original but the suspension is lacking. In saying that I've got a couple of years on you and definitely less likely to explore the limits of the bike. I was thinking of a change but now you have me thinking that I should probably hang onto my MT-09 and invest in a suspension upgrade. The CP-3 engine is a peach... albeit that mine is the slightly smaller 115bhp version. It's certainly more than quick enough. The quick shifter is "up" only on my version but works very well... and, as you commented, even low rev. If others want to make reasonably priced suspension mod suggestions... I'd be interested. Thanks for great review... Alan
I have had all new generations, the Gen3 SP fixes all the problems of the previous generations. up and down quick shifter, stiffer suspension, added extra engine power, the bike stays planted when you negotiate curves at the mountains. Give it a test and you will enjoy it.
I own a XSR900 since 2021. Incredible bike. The engine is brutal, very versatile and always beefy and prone to accelerate. I do 60 mpg. The secret of the XSR900 and MT09 is their light weight and fabulous engine. Quality is fantastic and my only complaint is comfort: stiff suspension and hard seat. Service costs are reasonable and reliability must be top notch (mine has 15.000 km with no issues). Awesome value for money.
Yeah, I don't think the Italians could make an ugly bike if they tried. And the Japanese don't seem to have to try too hard at all, do they? But... although I realise it's not exactly a great looker in a traditional kind of way, I'm actually quite fond of the 09, especially with the little screen I've fitted to mine.
Yeah that's what I thought too when I first bought mine, and it has since grown on me. Funny thing though I ride the bike to Road Atlanta, was parked amongst a slew of Ducati and bmws. I noticed people walking by going out of their way to look at it. The bike draws a crowd, and positive comments continuously. It's as brawny and odd looking as the new streetfighter, only don't have be a drug lord to afford it.
and I was undecided between ktm 890 R and mt 09 I came to the same conclusion for 2cp extra and 3 Nm not worth the extra 4000 euros ! I look forward to seeing you!
Great review and advice, years of reviewer wisdom in such detail is gold dust for an owner. I cracked a smile when you discussed the suspension setup because although I am a complete novice with suspension tuning I'd come to basically the same corrections on the rear shock and feelings on mine and it's now considerably smoother through mid corner. Now to try drive mode 2 to see if the throttle response is better as I've found 1 a little too snatchy at slow speeds and a bit on/off.
youre one of my favorite motorcyclist tester on youtube im 58 years old and i ride a Kawasaki GTR 1400 after looking at your video and all the great info you gave im too gonna buy the MT-09 because im tire of the weight of the GTR i no longer makes long trip and the most important, base on your opinion that really matter to me if its good for a real pro like you im sure im gonna have a blast on it thank mate.
Great piece. I have a 2010 triumph speed triple se and I ride with 2 mates on a 2014 and 2018 mt09 and we have a ball. We go touring together, motogp at Phillip Island which is a 2000km round trip from our homes and never have any dramas aside from having to plan the fuel stops if you own mt09.
Hello from Ontario Canada, I’ve been thinking of the MT 09 seriously and your review and video have sealed the deal for me. On the hunt for the same colour that you have which is proving to be quite difficult! New subscriber great content look for ward to more… PS I must love motorcycling is owning one in Canada is the equivalent of owning a snowboard in Mexico. Lol
You nailed it every comment spot on the only gripe I've had is the turning circle nearly caught me out but accustomed to it now , coming from a zx14r the torque of that bike was insane , i have the non sp as well just so light and good at everything, absolute bargain.
I was close to getting a 2nd hand MT10 after selling my 2017 MT09, whilst looking at options I heard that the new MT09 was for all intents and purposes a new bike from the ground-up, after watching various reports but especially yours I now have a new model coming in just over a week at a less than price of a 3-4 year old MT10 with all and probably more fun by all accounts. Thanks for the review.
I live in Oregon USA, At my local dealership I have a MT 09 SP on order. I've been told it's gonna be a few months which is fine with me it's Winter time. I'm coming from a Harley Davidson, (sick of them frankly) I feel like this bike will expand my skills further. However I am 6' 6. I have sat on the non SP version at the dealership it felt OK. However I am curious do you think a man of 6' 6 will be comfortable on this bike long term? Are there any aftermarket parts that could maybe add a few inches to the risers or drop the controls down a little further or raise the seat up a bit more so I have more leg room? I'm not entirely sure I need all that, I just want to know if it's available.
I have had 2 different years of this bike, one was a 2014 FZ09 which I regrettably sold and the other a 2016 FZ09. I have to say that I liked the 2014 model better, for some reason the brakes felt so good on it. After a year, I put an Ohlin’s rear shock on it and it and that made the ride and handling so much better and had an Arrow full exhaust that sounded so good. The 2016 was great, but not as good as the 20014 don’t if the 2014 was put together better. I put an Akrapovic full exhaust, which sounded good but not as good as the Arrow exhaust, steel braided brake lines, an ecu flash which made the throttle much smoother and ran cooler. Sadly I sold the 2016, because my back just didn’t let me ride without having a lot of pain if I rode longer than 10 minutes. But these bikes keep your interest because the engine is so good, don’t have to rev it very far to feel really good acceleration, it is an engine that will let you enjoy, in whatever mood you are in.
Thanks. A very comprehensive and very useful chassis review. As for buying your own machine and to fettle the suspension shows a need to improve an already good setup is something i do appreciate.
Excelent rewiew. I actually walked in to my Yamaha dealer and said I wanted a MT09sp last year. But no, they could not get more of them. So I did the same this year, early in february this time. And no, they still could not get any. And used ones are as expencive as new ones when they ones in a while show up. After enjoying this rewiew, I know I still want one. Mybee next year. Thanks :)
Yup, supply has definitely been an issue for me, too - even for the standard one. I think that's why the secondhand prices are quite so unrealistic at present. I hope the supply issues get sorted and you get your SP asap!
@@IgnitionBikeShow yes supply is always a problem here in SA aswell, i was sooo lucky, saw reviews on the new Tracer9 last year & phoned up my dealer thinking there will probably be stock only next century .. Was so surprised when he said he had brand new one on it's way to his floor.! I put my deposit down right there!!
If you ever stumble down to southern Spain and want to see what i consider to be the best roads in the world, definitely the best I've experienced, almost track like smooth with incredible views and not a boring stretch, give us a shout and I'll point you in the right direction. Congratulations on the new bike.. One of my favourite bikes
@@IgnitionBikeShowHola, yeah thats a good time to ride here as the temperatures are much cooler but it can also rain for a few weels like last Christmas but its not often.. Hope you do make it down and hope i get to show you some stunning rides 👍🏼 cheers
Thx 4 the video , I got my 2023 now 19-5-2023 , 13 days ans I love it , came from a Yamaha MT 07 , which is a superb Bike to by the way , but again thx 4 the helpfull video , I enjoyed it , take care greetings from the Netherlands Europe.
Ok I’m 71 and just had to see what all the fuss was about with all the fancy electronics before it was times up for me. Rear suspension tired up preload one segment. Better but I’ll be upgrading the unit. My bike has been chipped it’s the blue one on bhp. Uk. Put 5 bhp on and smithed things out. I’m an ex motorcycle courier that averaged 2000 miles per Wk in my late 40’s. Just to put a slant on the experience side of things. So absolutely is the best bang for your bucks. Amazing electronics give confidence whilst riding hard. Three into one is the business that I fitted. Upgrade to sintered pads 👍comfort seat was a must. To say my backside was sore after 70 miles is an understatement. So I’ve spent a bit on upgrades just to fit the big air filter element. It’s in the garage waiting 😂but I’ve got two other older bikes zzr 1100 and Aprilia tuono it’s the one I go to. It’s on u tube bhp uk.
I prefer the looks of the XSR900 but like the shorter wheelbase and lighter weight of the MT09. 🧐 But they both sound great. PS: the reason I subscribed is your experience and maturity. Thanks Matt.
It’s really refreshing to listen to someone who’s passionate, but not trying to act like a cartoon character. “Yooo What. Is. Up. TH-cam, we’re back comin ATCHA with another videoooOoOOo!”
Great review from over here in North Wales……been looking at choping in my Z900rs for the new xsr900 which is basically a different version of the mt09👍🏻
Great review thanks . I ordered my 2022 MT 09 SP in February and still waiting for it 😬 can't wait till I get it but starting to feel not so excited for it anymore . Waiting too long .
Great informative review! The last bike I bought was a 2020 gsxs 750👌..... after watching this review, I'm ready to pull the trigger on a 2022 cyan storm mt-09.......p.s. I 💯 percent agree with your break-in procedure...thanks again for the top notch review. 🍻
Haven't ridden the new Suzuki yet, but was already a fan of the previous version so I'm sure the new one will make me smile broadly as well. However, it does cost a not inconsiderable 3,700 euros more than the MT09. In my cash-strapped world, that's a major inhibiting factor!
@@IgnitionBikeShow Wow--didn't know it cost that much more! I got an awesome deal on a used Katana but would never have bought one new, especially without any factory incentives..
Hi superb channel must say! I’m a Portuguese bloke who lived in South Africa for many years I wonder why would it not be able to make a episode where you could take out a hornet 600 (pc34!) and do a review of it agains a mt07 I would love to see the difference between both of them . Thank you keep it up with the channel and come have a look to the Portuguese road known to be one of the most beautiful in the world to do bike reviews the famous the N222 . Keep well and keep up the good news
This vid convinced me that I really need to give this bike a serious look. I wondered what you thought of the XSR900? I’ve considered the Trident 660, Aprilla turno 660, I found a couple FTR Indians with no miles for 10500. I just Ed checked out the Suzuki GSX 8S, but after seeing this vid that engine can’t compete with the MT09. The Aprilla is a fantastic bike, full of tech for the money. I watched you vid on that Bike and the riding position on that bike is very comfortable. How would you rate the riding position between your bike and the Aprilla?
Congrats on the bike. I have the previous model, more than 2 years, more than 20k km and I love her- comfortable, light, powerful, practical, exciting, …
I’ve got the same bike and I totally agree with your review. Even the running in part. Great bike with stocking engine. Enough power for the road. Crap suspension but it’s cheap compared to opposition. Only thing I find is at 57 and mainly having sports bikes, the upright riding position crucifies my arse, and I’ve fitted the comfort seat ! Had a ZH2 previously and I have more fun on the mt. Great reviews as always 👍
Thanks Mr. Big. I too have ridden, and continue to ride (thanks to the job) amazingly powerful bikes but have come to realise that the goldilocks zone is about 110 to perhaps 130hp. It's plenty, it's still frighteningly fast, and in the right hands down a demanding back road it's as quick as any 200hp machine. And it's invariably lighter and more rewarding to ride 99% of the time.
Hey Matt, congrats!! Great choice and great review, enjoy your lovely new bike!.... I have been trying to test ride one here in SA, but could not yet get one available from nearby my home place... looking fwd to watch your next vids from some of the spectacular mountain roads of Europe! Enjoy and cheers for now!
I know what you mean, it's a consideration that I used to pay more attention to and for the same reasons when living full-time in SA. I get between 170-180km at the moment before the dreaded fuel light appears (I reckon it has - treated carefully - another 60km in the tank at that moment). But I do live in an area where there isn't much in the way of constant throttle, economical type of riding going on. And I, erm... yeah, I ride like an arse a lot of the time. Still, the range isn't great.
The video has been very helpful and thorough! Could you please let me know your height ? I am worried I might not be able to touch the ground well, I'm about 175cm tall
I also thought long about what bike to buy, i went for the 890R. Just because how good it is in the corners, and the brakes. Those things are crazy good
Yamaha back ends are transformed by an ohlins you didn't used to get the option now you do and therell be plenty of pre owned ones on Ebay, that yamaha rear wheel step out is a frustrating heart flutterer when you can have a how did i get hear this fast ohlins. Loving your attitude
Way hay! New bike. Looking forward to your interesting roads series. I'm planning on spending 2 months in Spain this summer on my smt following other riders recomended roads. Can't wait.
2 months in Spain is going to be bliss - brilliant roads whichever direction you head! Keep watching the roads stuff, maybe you'll be tempted to ride some of them in the future!
So, its videos like this that I should reserve the “like” button for...sure I’m a motorcycle enthusiast looking for his next naked bike, but your level of genuine display is just perfect. I’ve never owned a ktm before, but I’d like to think I bleed orange…this mt09sp just has me drooling. I am looking forward to my journey, hopefully atop an mt 09 sp. Thank you sir.
@@Somchai007 I liked the sportier ergos of the z900. Lower bars, slightly higher pegs. Like a much more comfortable sport bike. The MT09 felt almost to upright and like a super moto. No bad but not my preference. I am 6’5 with a 35in inseam.
Fark me TooFast, you need a Z900 on 21-inch rims with an inside leg measurement like that! Good bike, and so much down to personal preference that I really can't and wouldn't want to argue with you. Enjoy your riding!
@@IgnitionBikeShow I get told I look huge on the bike all the time 😂 “and believe me I do” but I love sport bikes. So there is no help for me. Love the MT-09 as well. And it wasn’t a wronged choice at all. Just not my preference
I am thinking the same myself. I was waiting for the xsr 900 butbut now out is out, the MT09 looks to be better around town and more what I need. Let’s see if I can stretch the cash, all imported motorbikes are +80% tax so not cheap.
You covered all the bases of what I was curious about and definitely agree with your riding philosophy. I'm glad i was able to see your video especially as I'm considering a Yamaha once again perhaps an XSR900 if I can even obtain one or MT09SP.
In all honesty my riding ability’s are limited only having 2 years experience on a Honda cb 750. This was back in the 80s, I was 18 and it was my full time ride. Now I’m 55 and went out and purchased a fully loaded 21 ktm Duke 890r. Almost bought the 21 mt09 sp but didn’t due to the headlight. Although always wondered if I should’ve, in the long-run it might’ve been better suited because for me the KTM is an aggressive little machine.. but fun! I know, waaa😫 poor poor me!
I second the track tuition emotion. And I'm glad you ripped yourself for your first world problem! Saves me doing it, 'cos I'm as jealous as I am poor. You have a wonderful bike, and yes she is a feisty little beast, but when you learn to work with her, the joy will be endless. Happy riding!
Awesome video about the mt09. I bout the same for some of the reasons you've mentioned, like the colour, it's combined power and agility nature coupled with the electronic controls, the look that is quite a futuristic one but yet not too agressive therefor very pleasing and the exhaust pipe, discret in it's sound and look as well. looking forward to see more videos about this bike on the channel.
Serious question for people who tried both bikes. Comparing 2022/2023 MT-09 (base model, non-SP) and 2022/2023 MT-07 or XSR700. How is the power/torque delivery of the MT-09 in mode 4 or 3 compared to the MT-07? Is it similar or still way more powerful? Reason of my question is I think the MT-09 has better value for the price difference than the MT-07/XSR700. Better brakes, suspension, quick shifter, cruise control, safety/electronics, stock exhaust sound, similar weight. Worse turning radius though. However, has a beginner, the power and torque (modes 1 and 2) of the MT-09 scare me. As a guy with gray hair in my face and little on my head, I am not a teen dreaming of speed and wheelies anymore. Safety is a concern for me. Buying a MT-07 for a year or two before a MT-09 seems like a waste of time and money. Last question, do you think a MT-09 ridden in "safe modes" is suitable as a beginner bike for someone like me? Thanks for sharing your ideas
Matt congratulations on your new bike. No doubt it is a sensible choice. Love to hear your thoughts on MT 09 compared to the Tuono 660, and your thought on the new xsr900. Thanks.
Can only go on what my colleagues have said about the smaller Tuono, and although the chassis is a peach, I think the lack of horsepower would stop me spending the money. I know nearly 100hp is still plenty, but my own tastes are better served by a bit more. And it's more expensive than the MT-09, and physically a small bike so I might look a tad, er... silly? I might be getting on a bit, but a man still needs some dignity. As for the XSR - same but different. Some will prefer the looks, and of course it's a tad more expensive. Affordability was my major limiting factor with this purchase, and so the MT-09 wins out over the XSR.
New mt09 is fantastic motorcycle with a design only a mother can love. But lucky for us there is a solution, the new xsr900. Same bike but beautifully designed.
Shheeeiit, I must be this thing's damn mother! With the screen I'm rather taken by her modern looks. The XSR is more expensive, and that round headlight, and the tail unit, mmm... I'm not sold. But, each to their own...
I have an MT09 and can confirm, it's incredible. I've rode boats, helicopters, quads, snowmobiles in the mountains, high horsepower cars and I also drive fast for work. That said, none of that compares to riding this bike. Such an absolute blast.
Try the 890R, brakes alone makes it much more capable.
@@freebehindbars86542 cylinder vs a 3 cylinder isn't very comparable
@@tomtemple69 In this case, they 100% are.. In the last 2 years, I’ve owned both the twin in the 890R and the MT’s triple. I’d say they are very comparable.
RIP, Mat. You will be dearly missed. I love my Gen 3 MT09, too.
Completely agree, came from a VFR 1200 myself (simply incredible bike)
The Tracer 9 is just awesome and fun and easy to own
Surely one of the most competent and true "Do it all" bikes if you accept that i cant do do dirt.
Touring - check
Sport / odd trackday - check
Daily riding - check
2up riding - check

Ok
@@alanhall7213
Did the overall seat height get lowered during the change ?
I didn't notice a change in the seat height with the aftermarket seat. The Shad seat has a more sculpted riders section compared to the stock seat but the riding position feels pretty much the same. Hope that helps.
I’m 52 and bought one of these 2 months ago. Sold my rs660 for this and have to say whilst it took some time to convince myself on the looks, the bike has proven to be so much more than I could have expected. When I’m not on it I want to be on it , and if that doesn’t tell me I bought the right bike then I don’t know what does. Great review. You have a new subscriber :)
It's exactly how I feel about my Tuono 660, definitely how you know you made the right choice.
@@metallitrunks1 You're happy with the Tuono 660?
@@matthewdelia906 I love it. It's plenty fast, extremely light at 401 lbs wet, quite comfortable and is just a beautiful bike.
@@metallitrunks1 Good to read, it's on my top list to get one, after 1 year with a 125 it's time to move on 😅
Oh, what made you trade your RS660 in for the Yamaha? The Aprilia seems to be an excellent bike, too.
this dude knows how to seriously ride a bike.....his smoothness, calm confidence, and perfect balance for an older feloow didnt come easy am sure......you have to find the limit, go past it, then dial it back to hone skills like this gentlemen has.........very proper riding........been looking at this bike lately for same reasons you stated.......i feel the same i can get ohlins for the bike on my own
Very happy recent owner of a 2021 MT09SP here! Congrats on your purchase.
Thank you, and yes, I think I might be a bit jealous.
Your idea of filming and discovering new roads is amazing. Motorcycling + traveling+ adventure= success.
this is a type of bike review for MT09 ive been waiting for years on youtube . Hats off for this man and the YAMAHA's MT09.
Gave the comfort seat a try?
@@Jtwizzle unfortunately no, in the future when able I do plan to get an aftermarket replacement. Hopefully a Corbin, heard great things about them.
@@RotaryOrNothing They probably are. I just see everyone seems to use the yamaha comfort seat.
I have the shad comfort seat, 500 miles is easy, well worth the money
I love the MT09, it has the perfect combination power and agility. I love the new idea of great riding roads, that is a life goal of mine to tour and enjoy iconic roads. Great video 👍🏻
Thanks, hope I end up showing you some inspirational roads...
Wow I just stumbled across the best motorcycle review I’ve seen on TH-cam! Love your work mate safe riding 🫡
Sounds like you know your bike and what you want out of it. Enjoy your riding!
How does ABS stop rear wheel lift exactly?
Hope this is helpful to someone
very helpful comment
Great to see you have bought a bike that you are content with and sharing the excitement.Your video content is on another level now. Most enjoyable,thanks.JHB-SA.
I'm upgrading to the MT09-SP this summer (already ordered).
The only gripe I've had with the MT07 is that the horn is placed directly to the right of the indicator switch and the NUMBER OF TIMES I have sounded the horn when cancelling the indicators is RIDICULOUS!
Glad to see the horn is away form the indicators on the 9!
It's even worse on the SP, you will be hitting that horn all the time lol, it's not in the same place on the SP
You are right, this is the bestQ/P ratio you can have, fantastic bike, just tried the SP few days ago and placed the order!! 😁
Yeah, think I could agree with that, and I'm sure wherever I end up with my own fiddling won't be too far from that description.
Good stuff, I'm 65 loving this bike just had ecu reflash, transformed it to perfection.
Thank you for the most convincing video I have seen so far. After riding the 03 for 18 months I’m getting this in a 2024! Subscribed
OK Matt... now you've got me thinking!
I wish Yamaha would hire a designer from Italy. The new MT-09 is not a looker Japan makes great reliable bikes but the not the prettiest.
Absolutely right...Yamaha's modern bikes are hideous af, so does the Kawasaki..🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢
I prefer the retro looks of the XSR900 but would rather have the shorter wheelbase and lighter weight of the MT09. But love the sound of both. 🧐
and I was undecided between ktm 890 R and mt 09 I came to the same conclusion for 2cp extra and 3 Nm not worth the extra 4000 euros ! I look forward to seeing you!
Excellent review!
Just bought my 2019 MT-09 a few hours ago, loving it!
Great video. Shows the passion and knowledge of 'motorcycling as a lifestyle'. Thank you.
Pick mine up next week and it's brilliant reviews like this that helped me decide 👍
Magnificent video, mate. Just bought one myself. Looking forward to racking up the Ks. Much respect from Australia. ✊🏻
youre one of my favorite motorcyclist tester on youtube im 58 years old and i ride a Kawasaki GTR 1400 after looking at your video and all the great info you gave im too gonna buy the MT-09 because im tire of the weight of the GTR i no longer makes long trip and the most important, base on your opinion that really matter to me if its good for a real pro like you im sure im gonna have a blast on it thank mate.

I bought a 2022 model in Black. The dealer said it's a 2 months wait for delivery.
I'm happy to wait for perfection!
After 10000km on my 2021 I couldn't agree more ❤️
Thanks. A very comprehensive and very useful chassis review. As for buying your own machine and to fettle the suspension shows a need to improve an already good setup is something i do appreciate.
Thanks for watching Bob.

Never ridden a triple but love the Suzuki 1000 inline four--another great deal
Haven't ridden the new Suzuki yet, but was already a fan of the previous version so I'm sure the new one will make me smile broadly as well. However, it does cost a not inconsiderable 3,700 euros more than the MT09. In my cash-strapped world, that's a major inhibiting factor!

Thank you keep it up with the channel and come have a look to the Portuguese road known to be one of the most beautiful in the world to do bike reviews the famous the N222 . Keep well and keep up the good news
Top class review - practical and no nonsenses, great!!!!
Watching this video a few times now. Fantastic!
Congrats on the bike. I have the previous model, more than 2 years, more than 20k km and I love her- comfortable, light, powerful, practical, exciting, …
That's some proper mileage in 2 years. I completely agree with your appraisal. Lucky, aren't we?
A can of Mat (!) black paint would be on my list for the exhaust. 🙂
Hi I was wandering if you have rode the gen 2 against the SP model? if so how much of a difference is there with the suspension/handling..cheers..
Merci Regis. Yeah, I believe they are in short supply in SA, and expensive - R205k as one commenter here pointed out. Thanks as always for watching.
Great report. Happy for you. Thank you for a great video. Cheers.

Love the MT09 but a 14 litre fuel tank is a bit annoying for Australian conditions. How many kms are you getting on a tank when out on the open road?
I know what you mean, it's a consideration that I used to pay more attention to and for the same reasons when living full-time in SA. I get between 170-180km at the moment before the dreaded fuel light appears (I reckon it has - treated carefully - another 60km in the tank at that moment). But I do live in an area where there isn't much in the way of constant throttle, economical type of riding going on. And I, erm... yeah, I ride like an arse a lot of the time. Still, the range isn't great.
Bought one after watching you vid i love my 2023 mt09 its a beast 💪 ❤️
The video has been very helpful and thorough! Could you please let me know your height ? I am worried I might not be able to touch the ground well, I'm about 175cm tall
I also thought long about what bike to buy, i went for the 890R.
Just because how good it is in the corners, and the brakes.
Those things are crazy good
Yeah, no argument here. I'm officially jealous. And poor.
@@IgnitionBikeShow i saved a lot of money to buy that bike(2 years almost), i feel your pain😅
beautiful and inspiring review. thank you. I would have liked to know why you didn't go for the MT10?
Yamaha back ends are transformed by an ohlins you didn't used to get the option now you do and therell be plenty of pre owned ones on Ebay, that yamaha rear wheel step out is a frustrating heart flutterer when you can have a how did i get hear this fast ohlins.
Loving your attitude
Thanking you. Yeah, you definitely feel very alive as you start to think, mid-bumps - that doesn't feel right...
Way hay!
With you all the way on the noisy exhaust thing. Great channel - enjoy your new adventures!
Thanking you. I hope you tune in occasionally to enjoy the adventures with me.
I picked the 21 z900. I like the smoothness and ergo’s better. But the MT was a very close second. It’s definitely an amazing bike
What was it about the ergos you preferred? How tall are you if you don't mind me asking?
@@Somchai007 I liked the sportier ergos of the z900. Lower bars, slightly higher pegs. Like a much more comfortable sport bike. The MT09 felt almost to upright and like a super moto. No bad but not my preference. I am 6’5 with a 35in inseam.
@@toofastnobrakes Thanks for the reply. I test rode the z900 and it was an awesome bike, as you say super smooth. Both excellent bikes.
I wouldn’t get to the same conclusion but I really appreciated the quality of your return of experience. Thanks ✌️
We're all individuals, how much boredom would ensue if we all thought the same way? Thanks for the appreciation.
@@IgnitionBikeShow Could not disagree with that 👍😘
I think I will choose the XSR,a lot better looking! Great channel🌈
I am thinking the same myself. I was waiting for the xsr 900 butbut now out is out, the MT09 looks to be better around town and more what I need. Let’s see if I can stretch the cash, all imported motorbikes are +80% tax so not cheap.
Streeeetch! Best of luck
Wonderful video. Thanks.
You covered all the bases of what I was curious about and definitely agree with your riding philosophy. I'm glad i was able to see your video especially as I'm considering a Yamaha once again perhaps an XSR900 if I can even obtain one or MT09SP.
I’ve just bought the Cyan Storm sooooo excited!
Great choice. I'm saving for the SP.
Don't blame you. Enjoy!
how is the fuelling on this bike? When I had the 2015 MT09 Tracer, it was very jerky and not very inspiring in the corners. Didn't keep it that long!
really liked the personal perspectives in this one!
I'm very pleased with Hyperpro front springs,For rear I use Ktech RazorR shock. I weigh 106kgs
Loved this very conversational episode! Thank you!
Pleasure, thanks for watching.
Get some track tuition
You wont regret it
@@Bow-to-the-absurd You are absolutely right about that
I second the track tuition emotion. And I'm glad you ripped yourself for your first world problem! Saves me doing it, 'cos I'm as jealous as I am poor. You have a wonderful bike, and yes she is a feisty little beast, but when you learn to work with her, the joy will be endless. Happy riding!
@@IgnitionBikeShow I washed a lot of urinals to own this ktm. True story!
Another great report - thanks
Awesome video about the mt09. I bout the same for some of the reasons you've mentioned, like the colour, it's combined power and agility nature coupled with the electronic controls, the look that is quite a futuristic one but yet not too agressive therefor very pleasing and the exhaust pipe, discret in it's sound and look as well. looking forward to see more videos about this bike on the channel.
I'll keep you updated, you keep watching... Tune in to my series on amazing roads, I'll be using the bike most frequently for those features.
Waiting for someone to try to fit the xsr headlight on one of these, to see if it's plug and play
Where you gonna find one in RSA ?
@@FocusedGio Yeah, Yamaha not exactly flush with new models in SA, ay? And the prices sometimes make me wanna weep!
Shheeeiit, I must be this thing's damn mother! With the screen I'm rather taken by her modern looks. The XSR is more expensive, and that round headlight, and the tail unit, mmm... I'm not sold. But, each to their own...
