    My first time shooting back in Ontario, Canada, since moving to England almost three years ago. This is from a trip back in 2022, and it's a video that I finally got around to editing. I'm out for the day making some photographs with the Fujifilm GFX50R and Contax Zeiss 45mm 2.8 at an abandoned go-kart track and also talking about the importance of going all in on what interests you the most.

    Maybe because I am just taking photos for fun I don’t feel the pressure of doing better. I am generally quite happy with whatever I am doing. What I get jealous of is all the travel the photographers do while i am tied up in my routine :)

    I was having a terrible time being inspired by my project. I took a month off and went back, looked through the images, and was reinspired. Comparing my stuff to my IG feed has driven me to only use IG on occasion. It was getting in the way of getting the work done.

    • @KyleMcDougall
      @KyleMcDougall  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I find that happens often to me. I won't be happy with a bunch work, and then I'll revisit it a month or two later and see it completely different.

    Your point resonates with me. I also often try out styles that inspire me looking at other photographers work… but I cannot use it at all to my satisfaction. I just can’t help but only be myself and do what comes natural to myself. That’s the work I am happy with even years later.

    I needed this advice. I spent so many years trying to go against my initial interests & styles in photography just because I saw some “cool” photo posted online. After getting rid of social media & relying solely on photo books, newsletters & the occasional youtube channels like yours, I now feel like my doses of inspiration are “healthier” for me. At the end of day, I like what I like & I need to remind myself of that at times. Thanks, Kyle!

    Hey Kyle, I recently made a quick trip back home to southern Ontario due to family reasons and I also brought a minimal MF (film) kit. My thought was to shoot around the area I grew up in, since never really had the chance to do that since I left the area as a teenager. Due to time constraints and weather, I had very little time for photography, though a had a couple of quick but very productive outings. I totally agree with you that you should "own your work." Not so keen to take it with me during Canadian winter. Thank you for sharing some of your thought at the end of video. Kyle, great video. And this is absolutely some advice I needed to hear. I’ve been struggling with finding my own creative voice and I sometimes find myself lacking direction of where I want to go with my work. Or asking myself “why am I making this photograph? Is it something I’m truly interested in or am I trying to mimic someone else?” Like you stated, I often find myself persuaded by other photographers, but in a way where I go all in trying to recreate their work or make something similar. I needed this, thank you.

    Do you think that a camera like this gfx 100s can deal with higelights as well as film ?
    I mainly work with my mamiya rb67 with vision 3 50d and develope ecn 2 , and also portra 400 , both film are amazing with the ability to take a very contrasty situation with very strong highlights(in Israel at mid day its crazy how strong is the sun)

  • @mjmdiver1137

    Kyle, Great video as always. I have been thinking about a diffusion filter for shooting at times and wanted to know what your thoughts are on selection of one of these... I want it specificaly make my shooting look a little more like it is being done with a single-coated or maybe even uncoated optic, but not make too much of a sharpness impact. So basically, bloom the specular highlights, lift the shadows a little, and as little sharpness reduction as possible.
    Based on this and looking at the Tiffen diffsion triangle, it looks like I sould be thinking about the Pro Mist, Black Pro Mist, maybe the Pearlescent or Black Pearlescent. It would need to be in a low filter factor (probbaly the lowest available in these).
    I'm not sure how the Moment filters compare to these...
    This will be for shooting on film (multicoated Hasselbald), and I could also use it on digital, but I might want a higher filter factor for that.
    Any suggestions based on your past experience?

    • @KyleMcDougall
      @KyleMcDougall  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm a big fan of the black pro-mist when it comes to having something that offers some diffusion, but is still a bit subtle. The Cinebloom was ok, and I have a glimmer glass that I like as well, but the 1/8 BPM, or even 1/4 is my preference for subtlety.

      This one was shot with the Sony A1 which I borrowed off of a friend in Canada. Didn’t bring much gear with me. I’ve sold the P6K though and now I’m shooting with the XH2s. Much more manageable and the image is great.

    Can someone explain if adapting a C/Y mount lens on the 50R makes the 35mm equiv focal length of the Tessar 45 mm a 22.5 mm?

    • @KyleMcDougall
      @KyleMcDougall  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This would be similar to a 35mm FOV on 35mm.

    What adapter mounts did you use for the Contax lens? I’m very interested in a small lens combo for the GFX

    How do you feel this lens compares in performance to the Pentax 645 45mm? Which do you feel is better?

    • @KyleMcDougall
      @KyleMcDougall  ปีที่แล้ว

      Very different lenses. That Pentax is an actual medium format lens, so you're not using nearly as much of the image circle, whereas the Contax is a 35mm lens, so you're pushing it. The Contax will have softer corners, some vignetting, more character. The Pentax is nice and sharp across the frame. I would use the Pentax for landscape work where I want the best image quality. The Contax is still really good, but more of a travel lens-where I'm not worried as much about maximum quality across the frame.

    Hi Kyle, do you have issue with infinity focus with the 50r and this contax. On my GFX infinity is on « 10 meters » not infinity mark.

      Hmmm, I've never actually looked at the distance markings when adapting lenses. I'll have to keep an eye out for that.

    What is the Facebook group for adapting lenses to the gfx system? And is the contax lens covering the sensor only when u shoot in crop mode? Or is it almost covering in full? Thanks

    • @KyleMcDougall
      @KyleMcDougall  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's called 'Best Non GFX Optics'. The Contax lens is covering it in full, but it does vignette a bit of the corners aren't the best. I'm usually shooting in a 4:5 crop though.

    The "T*" means the lens is coated.

      Hi, I had the same doubt! So I watched again that part of the video and I saw that he was not talking about the Carl Zeiss Tessar 45/2.8 T* multicoating but about the coating of the filter with the red frame.
      He used the wrong word "lenses" instead of "filters", but he corrected on screen at 3:15.

    • @KyleMcDougall
      @KyleMcDougall  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, was in reference to the filter, just came out wrong.
