    I love my 50R. Coming from LF and the Hasselblad V-System, the old-school dials are very intuitive to use. It's a good thing for my bank balance that they haven't brought out a 100R with IBIS. One thing about the large sensor is that you can crop quite aggressively without losing detail.

    Thanks for such a detailed review of GFX50R. I own this camera. I have paired it with GF50/3.5 lens. It works great for me. And for the past two years I have been carrying with me almost DAILY as I am working on one documentary project. But in general I really like the way the camera looks, feels, works and produces images. GFX50R is a great way to get into digital medium format. However I still think about buying one day an old used Hasselblad with a true medium format sensor size. I really like that CCD-sensor look.

I’m pretty much on side with all you say, I now focus on the glass for example, but that’s because i’ve worked my way up to being able to competently manage a higher end capable camera, well it was when I bought it by comparison, which has what I believe is a pretty good sensor that gives the glass every chance to shine. I do love that camera’s contrast detect AF sensor for stills btw, and some video. I really wish they made a true optical rangefinder with medium format and a fixed lens. Even just a medium format q2 with a slightly tighter lens would be good enough. It would be the perfect tool for an artist. I’ve been an art photographer for 15 years and there has always been hype around leicas and mamiya 7s for good reason to be honest. It’s largely the lenses, the weight and the viewfinder experience. Over the years, that’s what I’m finding it all comes down to. And maybe also the aspect ratio. I need the resolution for prints but It might be a good time to experiment with m 4/3 if you really don’t need that resolution.

    I mean this as an honest question, how does Fuji affect the colors in RAW files? I don’t know and I’m always confused when people who shoot RAW say they like Fuji’s color science. This is how I’ve learned that a camera takes photos when using RAW: light hits sensor, sensor creates analog signals, analog signals get converted to digital signals/data, the data is stored as a RAW file. Then when you import the RAW files into Lightroom, Lightroom will represent the data in the RAW file with a very flat look and will be using one of the Adobe profiles (probably standard? I’ve changed this on mine so I don’t remember which is the default one). How does Fuji affect the colors in this process? Does it happen when the analog signals get converted to digital?

    • @george_edward_
      @george_edward_  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      It can be about either the sensor's sensitivity to specific portions of the visible spectrum or about the algorithms used to create color from the monochromatic luminance information collected by the sensor. But it is almost always about how both are combined to produce a viewable image.
      You can take the same raw image data from the same camera and run it through two different processing pipelines and get two different results.
      Similarly, you can take the raw data from two different sensors imaging the same scene with the same lens and run each through the same processing pipeline and get two different results.

    • @michaelleoncini2670
      @michaelleoncini2670 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      To be sure, you’re not stuck with just the Adobe profiles. The RAF files from the GFX will show “built in” profiles in Lightroom and you can choose to apply any of the film sims to it that you would otherwise do in camera if you were shooting jpg.

    • @EricStarick
      @EricStarick 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You will see at most the difference from a non Fuji in the sensor difference. Most cameras on the market use a Bayer array whereas Fuji makes their own X-Trans Sensor which has a high ratio of green sub-pixels compared to a bayer sensor, but as to what exact effect that has to the “look” to the raw files… probably nothing tbh. But I’m not a Fuji owner so I can’t tell ya for sure.

    Thanks man, appreciate the video, but had to chip in... you start by saying you don't change any of the manual dials but then contradict yourself with the Lumix S5 & it's minutiae?! Tbf, I reckon any decent camera in the last 10 years can be setup to use the exposure triangle intuitively with a manual lens... I currently shoot with a Sony A7 III & Olympus EM-5 II (CY Zeiss/Leica-R/Canon FD) for street & environmental photos. Considering Fuji to investigate the film emulations but more so medium format for the reasons you mentioned. Is AI a threat to that medium format look using phones, M43 or APS-C... ?

    • @george_edward_
      @george_edward_  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Something about the lumix for photos and videos isn’t intuitive to me. You have to set up custom modes which works great once setup but otherwise you have to mess around the menus for much longer than I would prefer. Fuji to me just feels more intuitive all around. And as far as AI is concerned. I don’t know if threaten is the word I would use but it will definitely change the space for sure

      @@george_edward_ Yep, that's why I really want to get my hands on a Fuji. Glad to hear your perspective on AI as not a threat but a change of space, a more balanced approach to AI will serve us in a more proactive way than fear.

    Nice video dude... I ummed and ahhed on the 50R and ended up buying the 100s. I got a good 2nd hand deal. The auto focus is superior, and the images are extreme as you can crop if required for days! But I did expect that you could reduce the resolution down so you didn't always have to shoot at 100mb. Oh no... every shot is massive. Great for work, but a pain in the arse sometimes when using it for recreational snaps. I will get a 50R one day as it's a visually it's a masterpiece, which big brother isn't. I've a mixture of GF lens which are all superb. But I have got some 67 Pentax glass which so smooth. • @bciecko1
      @bciecko1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Without upping the sensor size the doubling of pixels means less room for dynamic range and an increase in noise at any given ISO because eit the smaller pixels. I've seen recounts of this from others that had the 50, then went to the 100, then back to the 50 because the image quality was "better". I find that believable, on paper it makes sense and whenever you dealmwotj massively crowded pixels, at any sensor size, you've experienced this. What good is cropping if the more you're dropping the more you're seeing the effects of an overcrowded sensor?
      Depending on the work, I'm sure there's a place the 100 (I or II) has advantages. It isn't in the studio and it isn't in the street, but I'm sure it's somewhere.

    Every camera in the world has settings to organise but you do it once, for the most part, and then just shoot. And all cameras have crappy menus except Blackmagic. As you say, photography is not about numbers. And I am not printing giant photos for galleries. So a mega number of megapixels is not compelling.
    Like most photographers I prefer aperture-priority, since this is the most natural way to work with a lens that has an aperture dial. The presence of a dial for shutter speed is useless. Removing it would be one less thing to think about (following your own logic) so long as dials can be freely assigned.
    So I chose Lumix over Fuji. Can still adapt any lens I want. Have IBIS which is insanely freeing. And oh yeah, I get USB charging. :-)
