    In this video, I'm out in Snowdonia for a few days, doing some landscape photography with the Fujifilm GFX100s-a camera that is relatively new to me, and one that I’m really excited about.
    I experienced crazy weather and put on a lot of miles during the trip, exploring the mountains and also the abandoned Dinorwic slate quarry, and was able to get a really good feel for this system, including how the GF35-70 lens performs. In this video, I’m sharing the adventure, process, and images, as well as talking about why I chose this system over the 50SII, and what I love about it so far. I'll be doing a more in-depth review once I use this camera for a few more months.

    You should do an update video on film scanning with a digital camera using the GFX100s.

      Cheers, Jahan. Yeah, it's been a while since I've shot this much digital, but I'm really enjoying this camera, and I'm starting to notice that film or digital, my images end up looking very similar after 'editing'. That being said, I'm still a sucker for the process that comes with film, and that'll be something that I don't think I could ever replace.

    I have the GFX 100s as well. Very, very impressive images from this camera. I have the 45-100mm and the 100-200mm lens. This camera is actually awesome. On the expensive side. I'm at over 10k U.S. with 2 lenses, but WOW!

    Another great video! Your attention to detail and effort put into your videos does not go unnoticed. For a one-man film crew, it's put together very nicely. I'm going to have to suck it up and start filming myself with the assistance of a tripod. That finished set at the end looks great together.

    Last week I bought my first digital camera after having shot exclusively on film for about five years. I thought I’d never go back, but something about having the flexibility with digital is quite freeing. I primarily use it as an every day carry for when I see compositions out and about during the day. I still shot film for my main photography projects, but the digital camera gives me the ability to take images without having to worry about buying film, developing, scanning and so on

    • @KyleMcDougall
      @KyleMcDougall  2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yeah, it's funny how certain tools fit us as different stages of our journey. I was digital for a long time, and then film breathed some energy and life back into my career around five years ago, and now digital is giving me a little bit of that feeling again. I still do love working with film though, and it's not going anywhere.

    Beautiful images Kyle, you found some classic British mountain weather and made it work! I would love to see a video of you talking about what brought you to that part of the world and how you research the locations you chose to visit. When you mentioned hearing about the shed with all the old equipment it sounded like the kind of knowledge you pick up chatting to locals down at the pub. It would be great to hear more background like this alongside the images. Really appreciate the hard work and passion that goes into your videos here.

    Friend,
    I have seen till now that photography is the most complex thing on my part.
    All the photographers show so beautifully how to shoot but when it comes to me I fail to click to my satisfaction.
    Therefore, i feel that it is the most complex learning on the part of a man.
    I do not have that camera with which you have clicked, I have a different one. Even then, for the last few months from my experience I have seen this is a very tough subject. Therefore, i feel one should learn photography from early stage.

    Great vid Kyle! I’m currently testing the 50s2 and wondered, apart from the af are there really any other discernible differences? Does the 16bit vs 14bit make much difference when editing? I don’t really need 100mb files and have my FF for jobs that require faster af….thanks Chris

    • @KyleMcDougall
      @KyleMcDougall  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Chris, I haven't used the 50s2, nor is AF important to me, so I can't comment directly on those comparisons. As for the 16bit vs 14, haven't done any direct testing, but I have been doing a lot of research and have come across a few conversations where people have been saying the difference would be minor, if anything at all in most scenarios. I'll be doing some comparisons of my own in the future, but I'd be shocked if there was a noticeable difference in most scenes between the two.

    Great work, as usual. I'd be curios to know ( 11:00 ): What made you decide to bring a digital camera to this location instead of analogue ? Maybe a video about decision making on why digital over analogue or the oposite ? I am sure many of us following your work would appreciated it. Keep it up, cheers from Sweden. Also, a semi-related question: How much bringing vloging equipment affects your decision on which photo equipment to bring on a photo hike ?

    • @KyleMcDougall
      @KyleMcDougall  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers, Alexis. Something I can definitely touch on in the future. As for the video equipment... I have a pretty standard kit that I bring with me everywhere. It usually doesn't impact the photography gear that I choose to use. Often I just end up bringing what I need and then suffering a bit because of weight, haha, but there's really no way around it.

  • @jasonwhite6408
    @jasonwhite6408 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Does shooting stopped down so much cause a loss of resolution? I’ve always heard to avoid high F stops due to diffraction but maybe it’s different with medium format.

    • @bendykst
      @bendykst 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      A larger sensor does help with diffraction in two ways. First, for a given field of view, a camera with a larger sensor uses a lens with a longer focal length. (E.g. an APSC 18mm lens has roughly the same field of view as a 34mm Fuji MF lens.) The f-number is the ratio of the focal length to the diameter of the lens pupil, so for a given f-number, a longer focal length means a larger pupil and therefore less diffraction. Second, the effect of diffraction is independent of the sensor size, so the larger the sensor, the smaller the effect is relative to the final image.

    • @KyleMcDougall
      @KyleMcDougall  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for this. I'd also say what's important is basing your decision off of the scene and situation. For example, would you rather stop down and suffer from a bit of diffraction but have everything in focus? Or would you rather have a little bit better sharpness but have something fall out of the focus range.

I could see the SDF mode and it's amazing Monochrome rendering and weather-sealing really shining for this kind of work. I really like the GFX100s but would not be liking the ding from all that Ca Ching. But you never know what’s next in the photographic journey. Im thinking that maybe the GFX50 would have a firmware upgrade for 4K at some point, I know my Xpro2 had the firmware upgrade from the initial 1080p . Congratulations on the upgrade. Wish you were back in the US Desert Southwest. I’d love to see you work that camera on familiar ground! Mine arrived just before an October road trip. The images made with it got the attention of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. I’m going to give the Nostalgic Negative ‘Stephen Shore Mode’ at least half of the credit. Out of camera jpegs need only a few tonal tweaks to be print ready, while shooting raw + jpeg allows even more flexibility in post. BTW, a Canon 24 TSE-II adapts perfectly with full coverage. It even allows for some lens shift before vignetting. I used the combo for astro shots.

I still prefer the Blackmagic cam for overall image quality (it's a little more robust and 'filmic'). But the X-T4 is definitely one of my favourite cameras that I've used for doing stuff like this. The image holds up really well being 10bit, and the colours are great. Not much messing around is needed to get a nice looking image.

    Ive shot film almost exclusively for the past few years professionally. Previously I was shooting on a Hasselblad H5D 40 and honestly, I’m happier with this Fuji GFX 50SII I just picked up than I was with the Hasselblad.
    Being able to freely edit in Capture One and adapt my Hasselblad CFi lenses (and Hasselblad HC lenses) to this camera makes it so useful and flexible in my personal and professional work.
    It won’t replace my Hasselblad 503CW as I hand print the images in the darkroom and scan them in on a V850 to give me 16000x12800 pixel (approx) images which I love but it definitely holds it own for when that isn’t needed

      Really interesting to hear that, Ryan. I've definitely been impressed with the Fuji system. I also won't be giving up film, but this 100s will get a lot of use. It's won me over.

    It's interesting to me that when you shoot film it's light and airy but your digital images are very contrast.
    Not right or wrong, just different.

    • @KyleMcDougall
      @KyleMcDougall  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For sure. Very different subject matter and light over here in the UK. Plus growing as a photographer and being influenced by new things. I don't think light and airy would work with B&W and these types of scenes. :) It's great for the desert work though.

    I just recently got the 50sii, and chose it over the 100 because I don’t need the video. Still shoot and love 4x5 film and a few pinhole cameras, but they are all just tools in the end. Use what works best at the moment.

    I have had 100s for almost a year, and it is hardware to help you expand your imagination.
    I never thought that there could be such a difference in quality in photographic equipment. I repeat that the previous years were, in a sense, lost years for various systems that always required a compromise. Nowadays, I always feel confident about the quality and I always know that I can get a lot out of a photo by focusing often on details without losing quality.

    The abstract about 8:30 in had a lovely 19th century feel to it. That weather and terrain were fascinating. In the US, we talk like we have a monopoly on wildness but watching TH-cam has made me realize that it’s there in the UK and Canada. If I were fluent in other languages, I’d probably discover more in other countries.

    Oh, so that's what you've been up to. Thanks for your perspective on that beast of a camera. I've been thinking about it a lot, too. I just wonder how it's doing on the technical side of things, e.g. in regards to dynamic range and high iso shooting. Been doing a lot of interior architecture lately and I wonder how the Fuji holds up in such an environment.

    • @KyleMcDougall

    Fabulous images. Do you focus stack much/at all with the digital medium format or just go with the shallow depth of field?

    • @KyleMcDougall
      @KyleMcDougall  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Tim. No focus stacking for me. But I'm not often placing any elements in my frame that are really close, so I find I can get away with just using a smaller aperture and still keep everything in focus. It'd be different if I was doing some exaggerated compositions with things close to the lens.

    Totally agree with you about using film or digital depending on the project (and mood at the time!). Great images which capture the mood and atmosphere of the place really well.
