I understand that there have been scandals where people were buying themselves into prestigious colleges, but in nearly all those cases the students weren’t academically poor just average. What’s interesting about this is that for whatever reason they were admitted, it wasn’t because of money. While very rare it’s not unorthodox to see a few outliers with bad GPAs get into Ivy Leagues. This is because the student most likely showed tremendous accomplishments outside of class (ex: sports, entrepreneurship, leadership, etc.)

Even the rich kids with high accolades in sports and academics cheated. One of those dads that bought his kid into Princeton made him look like some tennis all star. Kid had never played tennis in his life but got a full ride tennis scholarship because his dad and a few other people paid to forge his accolades. Also one of those kids went to Georgetown and didn't even want to go. She had decent grades but her celebrity parents bought her way in but she wanted to do Tik Tok videos instead. It's outrageous. I don't even encourage college for my kids anymore. I tell them to look into trade schools instead. Cheaper and you can land a perfectly good career that way.

I’d like to remind everyone that while being rich is a possibility of how they got in, there may have also been extenuating circumstances for the student such as a death in the family, illness or disability, a rough home life, homelessness, or immigrating from a country where they were really struggling.
While I’m not trying to say Harvard is a morally good institution by any means, they do prioritize getting to know students who had extenuating circumstances outside of their GPA. So if a student’s GPA was unfair based on their circumstances, they’ll look more at SATs, extra curriculars, not count a year or two toward their GPA for admissions, or get to know the student outside those numbers.
Another thing that can help people get admitted is if they invent something, are an outstanding activist, or have some kind of public notoriety. Take Greta Thunberg, she could be an F student and institutions would be fighting to get her in. In fact she has been on many school strikes so that may well happen when or if she chooses to go to a university.
While being rich gives anyone an advantage, more and more colleges are prioritizing diversity both in terms of identities and in terms of backgrounds. It looks better if colleges are admitting more students who have experienced homelessness, etc., in fact a friend of mine got a really great deal for college because of this.

They get so many applications every year I barely got even an interview from almost any place despite having (In my opinion) a pretty solid set of extracurriculars and academic scores. If they don’t spend time on people like that, why would they spend even more extra effort on anyone else?

people with a lower GPA can get into schools with low acceptance rates by owning a successful business, creating something innovative and getting endorsements for it, or showing some extreme skill. a 4.0, 1500 sat, and some ap classes aren't getting you into Harvard, its either money or being extremely intelligence and applying that intelligence into the real world rather than just to your schoolwork.

Many people on here have zero understanding of the admissions process. The answer is NO having a 2.9 GPA will not get you into Harvard. And NO, your parent's bank account don't either (btw many of these students get on a full ride). The admission procedure is holistic which means every other metrics and qualities are considered. I have served on admissions committee and that's how it works. This person could have gone thru circumstances that they overcame which showed their strength and resiliency and had other parts of the application aka test scores and extracurricular to near perfect. Very rare to happen but in holistic admissions GPA and test scores are not everything and we cannot base someone's fate just on these alone. It's so common to find a 4.0 person who can ace every test but fail procedural intelligence. The vice versa can also happen. Being a straight A student doesn't equal intelligence always.
