Qidi X-Plus 3 Long Term Review! 3D Printing's Best Kept High Speed Secret?

  • In this video I will take you through my experience with the Qidi X-Plus 3 high speed core XY 3D printer. I've had the unique opportunity to test two of these machines - the first one being a previous revision of the machine before Qidi reworked the frame to improve Z-axis consistency with repeated prints using the heated chamber.
The time between receiving the first and second (updated) printer allowed me to torture test the original model in a print farm production environment for months. Before making review videos I normally take my time and extensively test printers but this went far beyond what I am able to normally do. Although the original printer was the one that has had the most print hours on it - the two models are similar enough that I can confidently say the new model performs just as well as the original.
To be clear - I was not using the heated chamber (PLA and PETG mostly) on the original model so I had zero issues with z axis consistency. I ran this printer day and night and it is still working fantastic as a production machine. If you happen to find a good deal on the pre-modified X-Plus 3 and you don't plan on using the heated chamber much - get one!

Of my few criticisms of the X-Plus 3 I was not fond of the spool holder dry box placement at the back of the machine. As you saw in the video I replaced it with the following:

I also use a lot of refill spools to cut down on empty spool waste, so my blade spool is a nice addition as well:

Overall, I would highly recommend the Qidi X-Plus 3 and I have awarded it with my choice for best 3D printer of 2023. The print quality is the best of all of the printers I have tested so far and the consistency is unparalleled. Qidi has done an amazing job with this machine - even the default print profiles in their slicer are top notch.
I would also recommend this printer to anyone looking for a "out-of-the-box" solution for general use. I was even able to print PETG which can be a little tricky at times - I only needed to increase the nozzle temperature from the standard profile and it worked flawlessly after that.

I really like my X-Plus 3. I learned a valuable lesson last night regarding static electricity and the touch screen. As I walked across the carpeted room, I wasn't thinking about static, however, as soon as I touched the screen, the printer stopped and gave me a disconnect error. Nothing responded and I had to reboot the system with a full power down and power back on. Now I used a rubber tipped stylus to touch the screen....at least until the humidity goes back up next Spring. Love the channel and content!

Electrical Engineer here - In this case you basically confused some Communication-Module by that high-voltage Static-Voltage of yours. Usually all Devices are tested for EMI-safety operation by first zapping it with a High-Voltage Pulse of several kV (depending on regulation) which it has to accept without leading to any damage, so don't worry about killing something on a product that is marketed for end-user application. Before any electronic-device is available for purchase on any market of most developed countries, there are legal procedures you need to go through, prior to be able to sell anything in those markets. These Test for EMI-Conformity have been passed already, otherwise you wouldn't even have it in the first place 😅

Thanks for this review. After researching various machines I purchased this one and it will arrive next week. From what I read across all the nooks and crannies of the internet, there are issues, quirks, and failures with every single manufacturer at these price points. Then the question becomes support. I'd rather have problems WITH reasonable support response times and actions then problems without - I'm not going to gloss over crappy support just so I can buy the trendiest printer. If a company can't balance the support with the amount of product they're shoving out the door, that is an internal company problem. Everything I've seen with Qidi is that people are impressed with support.

I have had my X-Plus 3 for six weeks now, after giving away my older X Plus. I'm now wishing I had kept the older model. Issues with my X-Plus 3 are numerous, reliability and print quality being the top issues. Also, after homing the system and I jog the table to the top, the "ZERO" position is actually about 1.5mm from the nozzle tip. Sometimes, when I jog it to the top, the Z axis will shut off when it's within 10mm, which results in the table drifting to the bottom. Other issues, NO fail-safe sensors to stop a inaccurately homed table from crashing into the nozzle or into the frame at the bottom. To top it off, there is virtually no documentation beyond a very basic quick start guide. Finally, the older X Plus made noticeably better parts.
If all you are going to make are low resolution parts (over .2mm per layer) then you might be okay with this machine. I have YET to make a .16mm layer part that isn't a huge FAIL! And this is from PLA. I'm not even going to try it with ABS or something else. IMO, the firmware on this machine needs work. When selecting parts to make from their thumb drive, the user interface NEVER displays the part on the first try. I have to make multiple tries (as in over 5 tries) before the user interface will display the part.
Update: I HATE this piece of crap! My two year old X Plus was slower but at least it WORKED. I loaded their new firmware (per their suggestion), and it now causes the extruder assy to crash into the finished part, with the last crash resulting in the extruder cover being knocked off. There are only two possibilities, either their firmware is crap or their slicer is crap.
This system is beta at best and should have never been released for sale.

@@n00bhash79 just got it a couple of days ago and it’s been hell around here. I had to build a custom stand for it (long story but just has to do with my space). It is rocking and rolling!
Reasons unknown, my default settings were wacky. It was like it automatically imported my slow ass ender 3 settings and for an even weirder reason was layer height was .3mm which, I didn’t even do that on my ender so idk. First couple of prints were really slow (like turtle slow). I was about to throw a post up on FB with a picture of the settings to see if it was good, but decided to just click on the “standard” profile and the numbers changed drastically. Anyhow, so all user error somewhere.
During the open the box and startup/calibration phase, when it got to the z-offset my son moved the bed down, down, down, down (he was thinking up was down and down was up (Ender thing)) The printer said “outside of parameters” and then it just cancelled the entire startup process. I had to do the rest manually. Again user error.
I mounted the filament dry box to the wall just to the left of the printer. 2 screws right through the plastic into the wall and now I just have to remove the cover and swap… WAYYY BETTER!
I Connected it to the router last night, but I have no idea what that means yet. So that, and the camera that shows up in a couple days is next on my list to figure out.
I had purchased a new fan for the back of the unit to replace the very loud one that reviewers complained about, but when it showed up I noticed it was super quiet indicating that WIDI already addressed that. Then I noticed that it didn’t have a BL Touch and instead has an induction probe. People in the FB group said that’s actually a ‘downgrade’ but I don’t know nearly enough about this stuff to have an opinion on that.
But now I’m dialed in and it’s printing great so far. Have much to learn, particularly in the slicer software, but this thing is badass and I love it so far. I’ll mainly be doing dungeon tiles and terrain items for gaming purposes, probably strictly PLA making the rest of this machines abilities somewhat useless lol… but better to have and not need than need and not have, that’s why I went with this one. (Sorry for the long one, but that’s the whole story)

    Hey, thanks for the review.
I have a Neptune 4 which for the most part is good for 'one part5 at a time' printing.
I also do the 'M600' filament change which on the Neptune is pretty easy.
According to this review it looks like first layer 'full bed' adheasion looks REALLY good especially for multiple parts.
The question I have is: Would doing a color change mid print be a big hassle.
Maybe one day an ASA will be available for ALL machines but for now I need to do it manually.
Have you done these mid print color filament changes in your prints?

Hard to say! I've never used the x-MAX 3 but only the x-PLUS 3. But if the max performs the same as the plus and money isn't an issue then it would be the better choice because of the extra size. However, you might want to watch some videos on the max and make sure the quality is up to your standards :)

They keep updating - another one just recently so they are definitely supporting their product. I'm not sure what is the optimal amount of time between updates but my take on it is that if it's working great it shouldn't need an update every few weeks. It's great to have features added once in a while but I've also seen the opposite side of this where firmware is pushed out too often without proper testing and its just buggy. I'd rather Qidi carefully test their releases themselves rather than the users be the Guinea pigs. My two cents

Nice thorough review! I honestly think the entire current 3 printer Qidi lineup is very impressive especially for the money. To me, this seems like an overall more capable printer than the Bambu Labs X1C and it's much cheaper. The only limitation is no AMS option. I think the X-Smart3 is insane value at $299 as well. That's A1 Mini money, but for a faster fully enclosed Klipper machine. If Creality or Bambu Labs released an enclosed printer at that price all the reviewers would be losing their mind. I think the botched early launch hurt their brand image, but now Qidi is being slept on.

    @G53X0Y0Z0 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

I'm glad yours has been reliable. Mine has not, it was good for a little while and favorably impressed me, but has been a source of trouble since then. I bought it for producing and selling products, and will have to find an alternative if I can't get it to reliably produce good parts.
I got it for the large size and the heated chamber, being used to large machines I consider it to be quite small actually. For the most part I like it when it works as intended, but it's had it's fair share of problems. The power switch failed, and was one reason the machine randomly shut off or rebooted. The PC board on the print head started causing issues with the BL Touch, and just shutting off like you showed. It caused a lot of failed prints, and totally wrecked the build plate because it lost the Z axis zero and scraped the powder coating off.
QIDI sent me the new parts you got (but no switch or build plate replacement), plus the parts to switch to a proximity sensor instead of BL Touch. I didn't switch the sensor, as the flexible magnetic sheet is a step backwards in my opinion. It has enough problems with bed flatness as is. In fact, I discovered the big issue with my printer which causes bad 1st layers is the bed is far from flat (over .026"/.65mm deviance), and the "bed leveling" (a misnomer if there ever was one) doesn't properly compensate, but even if it could I don't want large parts with that much error on the bottom. So, I cannot use the whole bed (which is why I chose it), or even print away from the the center without compensation. I'm going to actually make the bed flat (goal is .002" total flatness deviation) and level it while it's at 90 degrees C, hopefully that will straighten things out (no pun intended).

I think what's happening right now is that bigger companies like Creality are churning out new models every few months and smaller companies are trying to keep up to stay relevant. That being said, I now own four of these machines - I bought two more and they've been pretty good. One of them will have some first layer inconsistencies once in a while (I have to power cycle the machine and it's fine?) which I'm trying to sort out - but the other three keep going day and night flawless. So perhaps there is some "luck of the draw" and I might have got one lemon unit out of the four.

That happened to me once. Maybe I can help. If you really want it to stick, use kids glue or painters tape. Kids glue worked fine for me. For PLA, do not enclose the unit, keep it vented, but have the printer bed at 60 degrees celsius and extruder at 190 degrees celsius for PLA. Open the printer door at all times so it cools. You also need to make sure it is levelled so that it isn't so far apart that it doesn't stick but also not so squashed that it has an elephants foot trail. Although, I'm sure that's the point of the autoleveller. Hope this helps.

Anyone wanna buy my very lightly used Qidi iFast at a deep discount?🤦🏾‍♂️

Why? Qidi iFast is still good. I still use that at the moment for my bigger prints.

If the light under which you see the "z band artifacts" comes from a white led strip (?), the effect can be caused by it being in fact a series of point light sources, offsetted in a repeating pattern 👍
So rhe patterns seen are the feature of the lightsource, not the printer

16:48 if there are artifacts on the camera, there are "artifacts".. not sure what you're trying to portray here... honestly I don't get it. Your camera does not lie. The physics of light do not lie and there is subtle waviness to how the layers were layed and the interestingly reflective black PLA filament makes it more obvious. So don't try to distort the reality pls.. it's cringe

What I was trying to communicate is that the artifacts were only visible in that footage under that lighting. When I look at the parts with my eyes (not through the camera) and in any other light the parts look nothing like that. Maybe my wording isn't great but I guess my analogy would be like if you ever looked at your face in one of those LED makeup mirrors... it enhances and magnifies all of your skin blemishes and imperfections (presumably so they can be covered up). To your point, although that means those skin blemishes are there, it doesn't mean that makeup mirror situation is an accurate representation of how you look under 99.9% of situations. I felt like whatever was happening with the camera and the light in this scenario was similar where those pronounced artifacts were a misrepresentation of the quality. I have a lot of friends who are also into 3D printing and every one of them who I've shown these parts to are blown away by the quality of prints at this printer's price point. They sincerely don't look like that in in any other light off camera. If this wasn't the case and they just looked bad I would just say there was some kind of z banding issue that persisted that was noticeable. In no way am I trying to make this printer out to be better than it actually is.

Every single printer will show print imperfections in a specific lighting condition. It's generally never looked at under such bright reflective lights to see those imperfections though.

I suggest reading up on "moire" effects, especially when using digital equipment to view fine repeating patterns. It's also why taking digital photos of a monitor display generally looks pretty crappy

I'll make a real review, the Qidi sucks, a bunch of open-source software badly coupled with decent hardware. They will support your problems patiently until your refund period is out. Then you realise that you bought a DIY quality printer at the price of Bambu.

@@DaDuckman05unfortunately, I have had xplus3 since September. Was not even functioning properly until the recent software updates. Support sent me a bunch of free stuff just to make me calm. Tell me a happy Qidi user, how many inventions does your printer have? Maybe it has a camera out of the box? Online services? App integration? AI vision to stop prints that failed? Non-stop printing or colour mixing? All it has is a badly coupled Prussa slicer with Klipper ui. That's it. After you compare the prices of upgrades you see that it will be more expensive than the price of higher-class printers.
