Yet again, a bunch of people who simple can not judge this movie for lack of education. If you faze out at the "explano scenes", which is where this movie shines, you were in the wrong movie. This is SCIENCE-fiction, a tremendously accurate one that even uses an astrophysical computer simulation of general relativity to render a black hole they way it would really appear. The purpose of this movie is to explore real possibilities and to make you feel time, feel relativity, feel a realistic black hole, to make it tactile and give you a sense of it. These things have to be explained, and they are explained very well.
If you want to educate yourself and learn about all the physics in this movie, you can read "The Science of Interstellar" by Kip Thorne, which is very readable and can be bought on Amazon. Kip explains everything in detail and also states exactly what is true, what is plausible and what is speculative.
Neil DeGrasse Tyson applauds the movie (and book):
    www.nbcnews.com/science/space/after-cosmos-neil-degrasse-tyson-dives-science-interstellar-n243796
I have read and watched reviews over reviews, and I have taken notes. From what I am seeing, every critic that gives this a bad rating, and every moviegoer who agrees, did not understand this movie. They did not understand the physics, were bored by the explanations, did not get this is realistic, and so on. On the other hand, everyone I have thus far seen who gave this movie a good rating did understand all of the above. This shows how unequipped people are to judge works of art.

I thought the same thing! The "explaino" scenes were terrific and added to the scope of the film. The science explained itself and it did show as well as tell.

It is impossible to depict a realistic vision of a black hole since we have no idea what a black hole consists of beyond the event horizon.

Hell going in I was very very worried. I failed science lol. So going in I was scared that the "explano" as they call it would e overwhelming as Fuck. But honestly it wasnt, sure I didn't understand word by word, but I got the jest of it still!

I think this is one of those movies that will go under-appreciated until ten years from now we look back and realize what an amazing piece of science fiction it really is.

I'm saying this as someone who didn't like TDKR and who found Inception kind of average, just to let those who will read this that I am not a Nolan fanboy, I just look for a good film.
I know this film is going to be highly divisive! But i'm just gonna say up front that I LOVED this movie! A Powerful, thought provoking, emotional, and epic journey that Nolan should be so proud of. You can nitpick it to death all you want, but as a whole package, and experience it's something truly remarkable. I shed actual tears 3 times which no film has ever done to me, and that my friends is the mark of a great film in my book.

I say its a good movie. As a non fan of Chris Nolan who was 50/50 with Batman Begins & Inception, & hated TDKR & Man of Steel, but also loved TDK & liked Memento. It was good. I would say the 3rd half was :/. But overall...yeah I teared up like a bitch too :). 7/10

I'm a Nolan fanboy. But, you have to face the facts that Inception was sub-par for a Nolan movie. It was entertaining, but it was one of his weaker films. Interstellar is much better.
I will agree with these reviewers that some points in the movie felt really forced. I think they overanalyzed it, but they aren't wrong. The whole thing with Murph at the end felt really forced, as well as a few other parts of the movie.

I could not agree more with John's excellent point! This is not about how good the movie might be or how bad it was in some instances - It's mind blowing originality and the huge filmmaking ambition! In a world filled with book adaptations and remakes, who has the guts to take up something like this and really, really go for it?
Off the top of my head, Cameron is one of those guys still doing it. Apart from that, who's really launching for originality and ambition in filmmaking? Nolan deserves praise and Interstellar will go down in history as a classic, despite its flaws.

    • @Youdoyouyeah
      @Youdoyouyeah 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

I was talking about Avatar and the single-minded vision it takes to evolve CGI like he did. The story may not have been all that good but it sure as hell was a great cinematic experience.

    • @Youdoyouyeah
      @Youdoyouyeah 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

IamZedX You've clearly missed the point of it all. I'm not a Nolan fanboy. I'm a movie fanatic and if you were one, you'd realise that modern day Hollywood has been in a downward spiral for some time now. It's Indie movies that have been holding the fort for American cinema. Hollywood has embraced its money spinning reputation and have forgotten to make truly inspirational movies that was an every year occurrence until the end of the 80's and even the 90's. So when a director comes up with a completely original piece of work, using a $160m budget, to create something from the void of creativity, it deserves praise.
There is a reason Nolan gets his praise and that's because he's trying to break trends and try pushing cinematic boundaries. Interstellar is a work of art and like all good works of art, it has both its critics and praise. The one thing that the artist truly desires from it all is an engaging widespread conversation as to message of the movie. In my book, Nolan is quite the happy man for there being people like you, and people like me.

    • @Youdoyouyeah
      @Youdoyouyeah 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

That's the biggest load of crap I've heard in a while. Interstellar was made with a budget of $160m. There are many, many movies out there that have been or is being made for more. You're thinking is skewed. It's not that directors can't get budgets, it's that they just don't want to make those movies because it's a huge risk. You're telling me Michael Bay can't get a budget of $160m dollars for a sci-fi movie? The Transformer movies he's made has grossed $3.6 billion dollars in total! You're telling me that a sure-fire bet like Michael Bay can't get a production company to give $160m? Rubbish.
It takes great courage and self-belief to even attempt these kind of movies. That's why George Lucas was so celebrated to have the guts to make something like Star Wars. I'm not comparing Interstellar to Star Wars, of course not. I'm saying that's the ambition that it takes to make a movie like Interstellar.

Number 1 is hard to answer. However number 2 is easy, watch the scene again after the emotional breakdown of wanting to stay goes away, he begins to realize that this was all ment to happy, the 5th dimensional beings placed him within this tesseract so that he could help murph crack the code. If he changed something and didn't help her, the loop would be broken and all the events if the film wouldn't have happened and the whole world would die. As far as number 1, I'd say it was a time jump we don't know how long it took it, not to mention I doubt she needed all the data just specifics parts to help solve the equation, remember the equation was partially finished.

      McConaughey should've died
Matt Damon's subplot was especially dumb
Love is presented in the dumbest possible manner
The space crew had the word "EXPENDABLE" written on their foreheads.
The entire last 10 minutes was the most unnecessary "happy" ending possible,

The son did not hate farming, he did. And the "explaino scenes" were so necessary! The scene in the school was not only to give you insight into the character but to also tell you where the world is at, that the world is in such trouble that they can't just let people do whatever they want with their lives.AND HE TOLD HIMSELF TO STAY BEFORE HE REALIZED THAT HE HAD TO GO IN ORDER TO BE WHERE HE WAS! It sounds like they were expecting McConaughey to figure out that whole 5th demention right away. AND was it not clear that humans were those beings? AND Matt Damon didn't become a villain, he still intended to save humanity but he was a coward and selfish which is part of being human. And her knowing it was him is demonstrating that love can transcend time and space, and you shouldn't be looking for an answer as to how that's possible because that's the point, we are not at a point that we can comprehend that.
To me this movie was trying to get across that there is so much we can't even come close to comprehending right now, like love. It really upsets me that people are giving this so much criticism but will talk about how great 2001 is...This isn't me bashing 2001, but to me Interstellar was A LOT more clear about the message they were trying to get across. To me this is going to be one of those movies that so many people say wasn't that great right now but it will become blasphemy to those same people 15 years from now to say anything bad.

I personally loved it. The only thing I hate is the drama brought by Matt Damon's character. I didn't want to see human dramas outside Earth. Yes, it is very ambitious and I really need to read A LOT since this is too complicated for me (probably the only film that made me research this much) but I appreciate Nolan always stepping out of his comfort zone. I give it 9/10.

100% agree with the Matt Damon character. When him and McConaughey have the fight, I was not on board. This movie has such tremendous highs but does have its problems. I personally didn't have a problem with the wormhole stuff in the 3rd act because I knew this movie was going to take an optimistic approach. I also had a problem with Hans Zimmer's score which was so bombastic. It works great for the action scenes but detracts from the emotional scenes a lot because its so in your face. I actually got emotional during the scene where McConaughey starts watching the videos after he learns 23 years have passed, which I didn't expect in a Christopher Nolan movie, but that score just took away from it. I'd agree with the 9/10 as well.

God, these critics are so frikkin' annoying. I have yet to find one that was as amazed by it as I was (like best sci-fi epic of all time amazed; because its ambition and sheer scope/execution has no problem competing in that department). Of course, perhaps the critics were too confused (maybe not the smartest people on the planet), but the utter complexity/depth of Interstellar alone makes it one of the most rewatchable films in a long time.
It's wildly thrilling/entertaining, has a wondrous score, terrific performances, probably the most scientifically accurate motion picture (according to many scientists), genuinely emotional and epic story, topical thematic material--I really can't say enough about how unforgettable of a cinematic memory Interstellar is. As for critics, give them some time. They didn't appreciate 2001 or The Shining when they first came out and then finally joined the bandwagon when everyone else finally began to appreciate the actual genius on display.
Interstellar is only behind The Dark Knight and Inception (so "not even close to Nolan's best" is just a ridiculous statement). Watch it again, guys...because it's pretty sad that you're giving these safe, uninspired superhero movies and blockbusters above 9's every time and when something actually creative and ambitious comes along, 7.5?!! (Didn't you give Amazing Spider-Man 2 the same score? lol) You're not encouraging filmmakers to continue exploring these territories like you praise if you seemingly appreciate the ones that don't try nearly as hard (the needless sequels and whatnot).

Why didn't anyone mention the humor in this movie? Everyone always complains about the ''darkness" of Nolan's movies, and the tone. I thought the humor worked really well for this kind of movie. And the timing was great.
Also, regarding the Matt Damon character. I didn't see him as evil. I saw him as a coward and in some way, logical. In the sense that he wanted to save the human kind with the sacrifice of McConaughey's character.

    • @willyoutube17
      @willyoutube17 10 ปีที่แล้ว +11

Well the black hole didn't work because of love. There is only theory of how a black hole works. We aren't a 100% of how they work so the fact that they were able to go in and come out of it was because it was the theory that the movie makers used on how the black hole would work. We can't prove that they were wrong in doing so.

      @jamespazzaglia7087 10 ปีที่แล้ว

Willear Glimniene I thought it was a great movie in spite of the theories and concepts he tries to use. Because the story wasnt about that. It was about the people and I think that is probably his best character story yet. Not his best movie but best character story. SerenGetter is correct about the black hole parts. It was so scientifically wrong it might as well be Magic. I think it was a huge miss on Nolans part. A lot of the basic "explainO" concept scenes where to much for general audiences and he pretty much loses the rest at the black hole where things we do know or he establishes in the movie as fact or science is just forgotten or ignored. The plot device "They" becomes the over all explanation of the impossible. I would also like to say I dont think he went with the easiest explanations of anything. He really tries hard to ground it in science when he really doesn't have to work that hard because it all comes down to it being "They" in the end which means all the times he took us out of the movie to explain something was unnecessary to the story because it was not a concept the general public is going to get. Unless you went the move with a understanding of why gravity is the weakest force in the universe and general relativity you were not going to understand the most basic of "explainO" scenes. Most people today dont even know what E=MC squared means at a basic level that matter is equal to energy but he has scenes explaining moving through dimensions? Just explaining a little about time dilation and explaining the remaining plot holes with "They" would have been sufficient. Because you cant explain leaving a black hole and stopping time in any way, shape, or form other then "They." Not after saying in the movie the only thing that could leave was gravity (and that was only to another dimension). That is a paradox. I would like to see his next movie not be based in any kind of reality like he always tries to do. I think it would be interesting to see. What do you think?

The initial take-off scene, thanks to the sub-woofers and the incredible sound design, actually made me feel like I was flying. That is why I'm going to see it again next week; that, and the movie made me cry like a little bitch within the first 40 minutes.
I gave the film a coveted 9.4. It has logical fallacies, a few moments where the dialogue seems stilted and silly, the female characters have some questionable motives and moments, and the love theme is very layered on. But, as an experience, it is something I will never forget. I felt like I was flying in the cinema; I felt like I was upside down as the camera started turning (and I nearly vomited from it, it was so effective); I was genuinely terrified as a giant-ass wave came crashing towards the characters; I was *stunned* at the visual artistry evoked. I don't usually say style over substance, but sometimes, it works. The time theme is very much fantastic and helps the emotional core of the film, but it is ultimately the visual effects that made me believe I was in space. The shot where the Endurance flies past Saturn and appears as but a speck in comparison to the beast of a planet was one of the most incredible things I've ever seen.
This is why I go to cinema; so I can feel emotions and experience something that transcends normal entertainment.
By the way; I never saw the Matt Damon character as a straight up villain, but more so a man, like Michael Caine's character, who believes solely in the survival of the human race. The crew of the Endurance were all aiming to help the current human population, but Brand's father and Dr. Mann understood that perhaps that wasn't the best course; that survival of our race would be best attempted by focusing on the next generation, instead of the current. Cooper was distracted by his desire to get back to his daughter, whilst Mann was focused on the mission, so you could see it in that way.

Just got home from seeing it and I get treated to a spoiler review. My first thought after I finished watching the film was "My God! I've gotta pee!" After I got that taken care of I was just thinking back about the movie and what I had just experienced. The biggest impression that I was left with is that I love Nolan's movies because they make you think and they keep making you think even after the film is over. I'll definitely need to watch this a few more times to fully understand just what I actually saw but the experience of it is still lingering on me. I also got to see it in an Imax theater that had the super comfy chairs and the sound system that rocks your bones and it was at times a visceral experience. If you are curious about this movie at all, definitely go and check it out and do so in one of those theaters. The experience alone is worth the price of admission.

I didn't know Matt Damon was in the movie either, which was an awesome surprise, his character pissed me off though! For a scientist, he is pretty stupid. I have a question for this movie though, so they save everyone from dying, because he went into that 5th detention and said that beings of the future are showing them this so he can save the people, If i heard correctly he said they were future humans. So if this even has happened before (because for the human race to move on it would have had to be saved before) then the first time this event happened, how did they save the planet? There couldn't have been higher beings to show that 5th demention. Only way to explain it is another dimension that was never in danger before and they just kept advancing but then there is the question of why would they help these people out, and if its another human race started on some unknown planet, the same question can be asked. So that was a little strange for me.

My one complaint about this review is I feel they completely missed the point of the classroom scene. It wasn't talking about Cooper it was talking about the state of the world and the fact that the need to survive has superseded our freedoms and this is what we're left with. And I don't think it was a throwaway scene because it set the stage for the man Casey Affleck's character would become (aka I have a job the greater good needs me to do). That scene gave me more of a feeling of doom and dread than any dustbowl scene.

grays72 you might have even missed the point of the teacher conference scene. At one point the teacher is telling cooper that Murph shouldn’t believe we went to the moon and her love for space is a waste of time. Fast forward to the end when cooper wakes up in the hospital and a doctor of the future tells cooper they’re in a space station orbiting Saturn named after Murph

I watched Interstellar a few hours ago, and have been trying to make sense of my conflicting emotions. On one hand, it was an amazing experience, leaving me hopeful and invigorated. But at the same time, the movie occasionally felt like it could benefit from tighter narration and some changes of focus. Of course, moments that pushed me out of the movie or lacked a little something to keep me hooked throughout were few and far between, so overall, I'm glad I've seen it on big screen.
Thank you for the thorough and and insightful review - it put words to some of my feelings, and is one of the few post-watching reviews that I've ever found really useful.

This was an awesome film. Saw it in IMAX and was blown away. The thunderous bass made me feel like I was in the ship with them at times. When the movie was done I went home and took a nap before I had to work. I swear I had the most strange, yet enlightening, dreams. Just the shear possibility of something like the plot of this film being possible within time and space is enthralling. I was, literally, at the edge of my seat at times.
I have always loved sci-fi space thrillers like this. If this is what modern day producers are able to put on screen, I am ecstatic about what the future holds for other space related movies. This makes me hope that the sequel to Prometheus will be even more visually superb than the previous.
    5/5 Very good movie!

While watching this movie in the theater and after the movie ended, i could already anticipate all the criticism that would come from people who just didn't fully understand the concepts. There are many concepts in this movie that simply went over many people's heads, including our beloved AMC team. Perhaps after watching it again, they will catch some things they missed before, and they would see that some of the "problems and things that didn't work or make sense in the film" are mostly things that were already explained and necessary in the film. I do however agree that i would have liked to see the state of other places/ countries on earth, rather than only stay in the 1 town. I totally got the movie, the theories and how everything tied together. I really enjoyed this one. 9/10 in my opinion.

I agree with you guys about wanting to get a better visual regarding the Earth being in peril. It is, arguably, something we are seeing in Nolan films and part of his signature. We aren't given the entire picture, and are left to speculate on what happens after the movie ends.
Regarding us only seeing the dusty and dying corn fields, something major was overlooked in this review - remember the scene where they were watching a base ball game and it looked like a recreational league that was just playing for fun? Those were the New York Yankees. I'm not a Yankees fan or even a base ball enthusiast, but in our present world that's a multi billion dollar organization, and NYC is the largest city in the US.

So far I haven't seen anyone touching the main theme, which - at least for me - was recursiveness. I'm sure people will complain to no end about the 5th dimension scene because it was trippy and demanding to figure out, but it was actually quite brilliant. It all comes back to Murphy's law - that which can happen will happen. It's a self-feeding loop, man saved itself so that it could save itself. Coop sent the message so that he could send the message. All the human drama is just caught in the main theme of how the space fabric was ultimately manipulated by ourselves in an advanced form of ourselves, an evolution that could only take place if man was saved, and man was saved only because the evolution took place. In higher dimensions of existence, the question of the chicken or the egg becomes irrelevant.

I never felt so strong of feelings in this film. Where McConaughey is smiling when he first sees the videos from home to where he is breaking down and crying. Made me fight my urge to bust out in tears lol. And just the visuals were aw inspiring, giving us the the best message "We were never meant to live and die in the dirt". Truly is a human spirt that I feel is missing in the world, the nations, and it's people. everyone with their heads facing down. Fighting tooth and nail for that next dollar, that next "high". That's how I just feel what the film told me.
I would of loved to have seen more of the planet and what was the real state of world and the major nations. Something was mentioned SUPER quick, about how NASA wouldn't drop bombs on the world's population. And if that was one of the answers for dealing with the food shortage. Now that would of been something to see but might turn the tone of the film in a different direction.
Well I'd say one of the best films the Nolans ever made. And what a way to get it done. 9.5/10 IMAX
And also if anyone thinks I'm just saying this because Nolans reputation, and he could do no wrong. And will go with anything he does, I would of given a low rating if the movie was trash. Well just my feelings on the film and only hope everyone gets to enjoy it. Thanks

I won't go into why this movie was amazing because I think llavenya articulated it very well but I will say this is the first time I completely disagree with the AMC crew on a movie. More movies should have these "explaino" scenes to ground the movie into reality and make the audience engaged, even challenge the audience to use some brain cells and wrap your mind around concepts we normally don't consider. More movies should be this intelligent in its design and a discussion about why those scenes were a negative makes me feel sad for us as a society that we look at such things as trivial or boring. A lot of the negatives were explained very well in the movie if you focused. This movie was an experience to say the least and I will say the black hole scene was a bit weird but I applaud Nolan for giving his interpretation of what could be inside something that we don't understand to this very day. I love this movie 9.0 out of 10

AMC please take the time to read this bc this movie is life changing and it for sure has changed mine. They have some very good points bc of how they saw the movie, but they will be surprised when they watch it again and actually see what really happened. Example the thing about "go." The movie's weaknesses were Cain and & Damon character. This is brilliant story telling that hasn't really been seen sense the late 80's and 90's movies or Star Wars in 1977.Those movies made you feel like oh I missed that but that was bc now one welcomed exposition but sometimes you need it. This movie is a 9 and its bc two characters didn't work for me, to my surprise bc I rank both actors as some of the Kings in cinema. The reason for those characters not working is bc of the kinks that you'll find in some of Nolan' writing in an otherwise brilliant story telling ability. I just what to spend 24 hrs straight listening to him share the things that cross his mind. #WOW

The stay/go scene makes sense to me. He is telling Murph to convince him to stay before he realizes where he is and that he can manipulate time. He is just emotional, and he feels that he missed her whole life for nothing. Tars contacts him after that to feed him the singularity equation at which point he realizes that he can actually save the human race and the people on earth.

I JUST REALIZED THIS... READ DO NOT GO GENTLE INTO THAT GOOD NIGHT, AND THE PLOT OF THE MOVIE IS CENTERED AROUND EACH STANZA!!!!.
The first stanza is the basic theme. The second stanza is old Dr. Brand, he knew that the earth was doomed and his words couldnt fix it but he still had to try and keep humanity alive. The third stanza is about Doyle or Romily, because it mentions a wave and frail deeds. The fourth stanza is Dr. Mann, who has gone mad out of isolation, yet he still wants to complete the mission but learns too late his own fate is sealed. The fifth stanza is about Coop, by all means he should be dead and is about to die near the end of the film. It also mentions a blind sight, which is what he sees right before he leaves the 5th dimmension. The last stanza is Old Murph speaking to her father, that he must continue the mission because young Brand is still out there. Though it is loosely based on the structure of the poem, the fact that Nolan incorporated it into the plot in so many ways is astounding to me. it went to a completely other level

It's a little like the Patronus scene in Harry Potter. Initially they think it's an anomaly of gravity the same way that Harry thinks it's his Dad, but even though he knows he would ignore the entreaty 'stay' the desperation of the situation looking in hindsight, he's not even aware that he's completing the loop. It wasn't planned, it was just desperate because at that point he hasn't seen his daughter for ages, and it beautifully fit into what went before.

I enjoyed the film because I like deep, thought-provoking films. This one goes deep in a very different way. the whole film can be summarized by heavy emotions related to the anxiety of being separated from family for a greater cause, and the attempt at the completion of an equation in order to validate the sacrifices made by the astronauts and to succeed the legacy of the man whom engineered the said equation. Good film as a whole, too long though. Weird ending, but palatable. When the movie ended, there was dead silence in the theater. Did anyone else experience that? Could have been a good or a bad sign. Good for me though.

Really enjoyed the sound design and score- very intense, and coupled with the visuals in an IMAX theater- breathtaking. The whole theme of parents be the "ghosts of their children's future" was very cool. It not only had very literal application in Cooper's entrance to the fifth dimension, but also added to the ideas of legacy and family that the movie was pushing.
All in all, it was definitely a thinker. Some convoluted and overly convenient plot points were a little hard to grasp, but, like Inception, they form a really nice, completed puzzle of a story that Nolan put to screen in his routine epic fashion.

7.5/10? That's pretty low guys especially since John and Dennis gave John Wick a really high score (granted two totally different movies but on paper you're saying John Wick > Interstellar). I see the some of the flaws that you guys are talking about but it's something you'll have to see again and again to really understand what Nolan was trying to do. I didn't feel like the movie was bumpy, and the emotional aspect was amazing because he wasn't just trying to make a sci-fi film he was aiming for a masterpiece, not just something sweaty nerds would like but he was grounding it and that made the film awesome. I give it a 9/10 if I went full picky I would say 8.8/10.

Actually I agree. Considering how super positive they were about the positive stuff and calling it a "true cinematic experience", I was surprised they would go as low as 7.5. To me a 7.5 is not at all a "cinematic experience" that's just a fairly good film I never need to see again. With that being said, I understand all of their complaints. For me the big issue was the dialogue was fairly heavy-handed and clunky, which tends to be typical of Nolan's films. Also some of the story points are a little....vague, I guess. Have to be thought about to fully understand (but not in an entirely good way). For me personally, I gave it a 9/10 (but more specifically like a 8.75). Not one of Nolan's best like The Dark Knight trilogy or Inception, but still a very worthy film that's deserving of his canon.

I get that it's not about being a fanboy but you can't call a movie a possible "classic" and a great cinematic experience and give it a 7.5/10. That's like your teacher in high school saying that you wrote a great essay and gave you a 75. The lowest I thought they would give this film would be an 8, and I wouldn't be that surprised.

In reference to the part of the discussion around 19:37ish, they're missing the aspect of Mccohnohay's perception. He only gives the grid coordinate once he talks to Tars or whatever his name is. As he begins to understand whats going on he begins sending messages that tailor to his own understanding. The plot is essentially a loop within a loop. Because Chastains character already saved man-kind already by breaking the formula, human kind evolved to a point that it actually made the black-hole itself. The majority of the movie assumes that we were supposed to travel through the black hole to find a new home, which seems to be a residual affect rather than the actual point. We see that when Hathaway has successfully started her colony. But the ultimate purpose of the black hole is to provide a pathway through time so that McConohay's can deliver the message in the first place. McConohay's actions are a loop just as much as the appearance of the black hole.

Question 1: if the first planets time was being altered by its proximity to the black hole, wouldn't the surrounding space be altered as well. The ship in orbit would experience a similar time dilation (7 years to each hour).
Question 2: why wasn't the water receding prior to the large wave. To my knowledge, that must happen. I know it's a different planet but physics are physics.
Question 3: during the descent into the black hole, what happened to tidal forces, spaghettification, radiation, and a whole list of other destructive events to prevent one from surviving the approach to a black hole.
Question 4: why/how was the black hole tied to the wormhole?
Question 5: axis for artificial gravity.... Ummm, what?

There were books and objects (the spaceship model Murph brings to him to fix at the dinner table) falling off her shelves BEFORE the two of them as father and daughter start to realize it's binary...or morse code, I can't recall which one it ended up being. When Cooper is actually first in the tesseract, after he ejects, the first thing he does is send the message "STAY", or did I miss some moments when he bangs on the bookshelf and just causes books to fall. I'm re watching this film on Friday to better follow what the young Murph says about the ghost, because to me it seemed like she'd been marking in her book for some undetermined amount of time before she even told her dad anything about it. Exceptional film! I just want to see it again to follow it, without having to focus on the whole.

I loved the movie, for its sheer vastness. But at the same time, it focuses on little details...like sound and the lack of it in space and how amazing it is to see a human face after ages (the matt damon scene when he cries after being awaken). We take these simple things for granted!! The visual effects were seriously awesome. The planets, the scene where they had to spin in sync with the mothership and attach. Science was not that hard though, I think I understood what they tried to mean. I think it's more about imagination than about science. Da Vinci's art was imagination based on known science of his time...so was Nolan's science. I also have to give credit to Zimmer for his amazing background score. It just keeps you in the loop.

As a huge Christopher Nolan fan, this was one of my most anticipated movies of the year. I am saddened to say that I am a bit disappointed. While the emotional core of the film was very skillfully acted by all the actors involved, and the cinematography and set design were top notch - something you would expect from a Nolan film - the plot left much to be desired. They started the film by using some interesting concepts of physics to drive the plot, but then they used these same fascinating scientific concepts as a crutch to give the characters a very convenient escape from danger and death. Hence, the film started out with a lot of promise, and then the film climaxed with a contrivance that was too lazy for such a director of Nolan's caliber.

What's the bit rate of human transmitted morse code when sent backwards in time (more than once apparently, because she wasn't watching the watches' second hand from the very beginning) through the event horizon of one of the most colossal forces to occur in nature again? Apparently the 'secret' quantum data is such a trivially small amount that you can send it that way...anyway. Despite understanding all the physics as they explain them in this movie, it just kind of falls apart. Make a movie of 'The Forever War' if they want some nice time dilation story...

I agree that when Cooper told his daughter to both STAY and then gave him the coordinates to NASA I thought that makes no sense. After the film finished though I was thinking that it does makes sense depending on when Cooper contacts TARS in the black hole (I actually can't remember when he did which is irritating). When Cooper tells Murph STAY it is at a point when he hasn't made contact with TARS. At that point he is completely alone, with no way of getting the data that his daughter needs for plan A (hence the whole mission was a waste of time and he tells her to make him stay). It's only after TARS then contacts him and tells him that he has the data that he tells her the coordinates as he realises plan A can work. This makes sense if the contact with TARS was inbetween the messages (like I said I can't remember the ordering).

I have three questions... Because of the fact that "they and them" was really Matthew McConaughey using the gravity formula, who were/was the being(s) that made the 4th dimension a 3 dimensional thing, I think I may have missed dialogue explaining that. Was I the only one who thought that in the beginning it was implied that the ghost was around for a while before the film starts, but that would not work as McConaughey was never seen affecting this part of Murph's life in time and space. Also didn't McConaughey say his craft was affected by the anomaly which stopped his craft while he was at NASA, but how could he be affecting that if the beings with access to the 5th dimension created a three dimensional viewing of Murph's room.

The scene where he sends the message to stay and then afterwards sends the message to go does make sense because when he 1st arrives in that place that he's in he's desperate and in a panic...he doesn't know where he is, he doesn't know if he's gonna get out of that place, he's all alone, he's been lied too about a hopeless mission and he may just die there...he sends that message because of just that, he's desperate, he's afraid he's lost hope and he wants to be with his daughter, but that robot starts communicating with him and that hope comes back, he gains understanding and he finally knows what he has to do so he sends a message to himself to go and then ultimately communicate his gained knowledge with his daughter. It makes sense, I didn't think it was complicated I actually found it to be fairly straight forward

I don't know how someone can miss the logic behind Cooper's STAY message and NASA message. You see, Cooper finds himself in a place that he doesn't understand. He only realizes the fact that he is able to communicate with Murph back in time. That is basically the only thing he understands about the 5D. Thinking that the place is the end of the road for him, he gives the STAY message for the 'not yet in space Cooper' to stay as he is aware of the fact that this is where he will end up. That included with the extremely bad terms he leaves on with Murph. Point being, you don't want to part from your daughter in a shitty way that will leave you hanging for whole time you are away from her and then end up in an infinite booksheld (interior?) from which there is presumably no escape. This is however only until he hears from TARS and becomes aware of the fact that TARS survived the slingshot move and can now give the right part of the equation. Now in order to have the 'not yet in space Cooper' to end up in the same situation as the 'in space Cooper' so that he can too give the right part of the equation to Murph, the 'in space Cooper' gives the NASA message which ofcourse would lead him to the same path we all come to see in film. As simple as that.

Best space film ever. It was fascinating and was one of the best cinematic experiences ever. The story, the ambition, the acting, the score, the visuals... I could barely sleep the night I saw it. Top3 best films of 2014 for sure. 9.5 out of 10 for me (take into account I give a film like Avengers a 6 out of 10).

Completely agree to all your points guys, and I am glad Nolan did not break the most important barrier of science which is speed of light, he treaded on a difficult terrain but did not go all the way, it would be a different film otherwise. Brilliant performances by the whole cast esp MMhey and Chastain. Agree to Schnep the Love angle was a thick one.

    I only had 2 negatives.
    1. I thought there were some parts that could've been cut or edited better so the pacing was a little quicker. Imo I don't think the film needed to be nearly 3 hours.
    2. By the end of the film I started to get a little lost in the plot and I didn't really understand some of the scientific jargon they were talking about. This is mostly me not being smart enough to wrap my brain around it but I thought there was a little too much happening at the same time.
Aside from that, this is probably my favorite Nolan film outside of the The Dark Knight Trilogy.

Interstellar was actually a really great film. The movie had a lot more highs than lows and the lows didn't really affect he movie that drastically. This movie simply blows your mind and at the same time had you on the edge of your seat. No matter if you liked it or not, I bet everyone discussed it while walking out of the theatre, and like Schnepp said thats what great film making is all about. One again, Nolan did a great job in my eyes. I give it an 8.8

If they didn't have those exposition scenes, half of the audience wouldn't understand the movie at all, and probably hate it because people don't like what they can't understand. He was telling himself to stay because he didn't want him to go to the first planet and lose 23 years with his family.

What annoyed me the most about this review were the complaints about the ending. Seriously, did you guys even pay attention? They're bringing up plot holes that don't even exist and that are answered RIGHT IN THE MOVIE! I normally like AMC Movie Talk, but it is as if they didn't even watch the film. It's frustrating.

I likely see it again which is rare i look at a film twice and haven't since Gravity. It did felt epic and grand in vision like not many films have since 2001 A Space Odyssey.

Looking forward to Christopher Nolan's next project!

  • @MrFTW733

This movie is not meant for the audience that goes "WHOOOAAAAA THAT'S SICK!!!", even though it no doubt contained scenes that make one go like that. Nolan brings art-house to big budget hollywood, and a film like this promotes contemplation, taking the idea of saving the world very seriously. There's no room for heroism to save the world, because if you seriously consider that one day we all may have to move to another planet, with the Earth (where humanity has called home for millions of years) is DYING, one can't help but shiver at the idea.
The whole cast was surprisingly incredible, each character were given a meaningful and memorable role. This movie was overall a love story, showing that love is a supernatural thing, almost spiritual, and the spiritual world is portrayed with the use of science.
I just have to watch it again to completely understand the textbook physics and engineering stuff, but this movie was worth every penny to see in IMAX.
    9/10

some thing about Mat Damon's character:
way back in the beginning of the production a small role was offered to an Indian actor "Irfan khan" (the inspector in slumdog millionaire) and it required him to be in Greenland for about 1-2 months and didn't take the role saying he had prior commitments.
now what's interesting here is the character's name. "Dr. Mann" now mann is an Indian lastname (i'm indian) which brings me to a probable conclusion that he wrote the character for an Indian guy (India becoming the superpower and indian drones are already there) and then he just found another actor to play role with out changing the name.

    Alright..... For what it's worth, (not much) here are some of my impressions of the movie. Never mind the Nolan haters and lovers, I'm neither. As I watched this film, the visual aspects of it were great. The action scenes really drew me in. The gigantic tsunami scene was awesome, and I never saw the trailer to be spoiled by that! The drama aspect of it really intrigued me. It's a flawed movie, no questions there. McConnoughy (however the hell it's spelled) was great. I always enjoy his characters and you can't help but enjoy his charismatic personality that he brings to every film. Michael Caine was great, as always. The daughter's character, for me, was a source of a lot of the good and emotional experience, but also some of the bad.... My problems with the movie are as follows;
    * First of all, for a guy who's sole desire is to get home and see his children again, he doesn't even ask Murph about his son/her brother when he finally gets reunited with her. The son was older and Murph was very old here, but still, I'd like to think he'd at least ask about his own son..... is he alive? If not, when did he die? How?
    * Secondly, I couldn't understand what Michael Caine lied about, as he spoke from his deathbed.... I didn't understand him, it was never really explained, and how it was relevant to the lead character and Murph's relationship still has me wondering.... I was able to piece together that Caine had apparently solved the Gravity problem, and lied about it to everybody..... I suppose the implication would be that Cooper then left his children and humanity behind to save himself??? I still don't know for certain about this one.
    * Dude ejected from his spaceship, into a black hole...... And is rescued some fifty years later with only minutes left in his oxygen..... First of all, if you eject into space, somebody/anybody, give me the odds of being found EVER!!!!! And the whole bookshelf/ghost scene towards the end. Who the hell knew that the black hole lead to your own house???? If you just wanted to change the past and keep yourself from ever leaving, all you had to do was NOT give the coordinates to NASA to yourself, and you would have never left.....
    * A little more backstory on the demise/slow death of the planet would have been nice. But if you've got the know how to create a spaceship whereby you can grow vegetation, support thousands of people, and have all the things that we saw when Cooper woke up..... You mean to tell me that you couldn't have just put that plan into action ON THE PLANET and stayed there?
*Lastly, I realize as it relates to the plot of the movie, the son's character wasn't as relevant as the daughter. But still, the father/son relationship leaves a bit to be desired. When he leaves, he spends all that time talking to Murph, trying to make it right.... He gives the son a quick hug and that's about it....???? Then he doesn't seem to have much interest in his son when he finally is reunited with Murph.... No father/son scenes really to speak of.... No wonder the son seems to be such a bastard by the end of the film! He's bitter! The worst part is that he was the child that actually kept communication with Cooper while he was away! Murph didn't communicate with him for 23 years!
Overall, the movie was good! The emotional aspect of a guy leaving his kids (with the hope of being back in a couple years) only to barely make it back in time for your youngest to die.... That really spoke to me, as a parent myself. That is a very heartbreaking thing for somebody to have to experience. You missed your kids entire life! Does it really get any worse than that?

I've seen it twice! And I love it! I disagree with the comments about why would he tell himself to stay if he gives the nasa coordinates. I believe when you're in a situation like that you're not going to think "logically" you're going to try to stay with your family and wish this was just a dream him. He then realizes that he has a mission to complete and gives the coordinates, besides that I agree with AMC's comments about the movie I would of given it an 8

I really don't understand how anyone can give the film anything above an 8/10. I'm giving it a 7/10 but I will allow some wiggle room if I see it again and give it a higher or lower score.
    CONS:
    -the pacing was off
-the dialogue was awful a few times, especially before Coop leaves Earth
    -exposition was heavy
-the "love" in the movie felt a bit forced
-ending the movie with a paradox shouldn't be a way "to make the audience think more". That's just lazy screenwriting.
    PROS:
    -great cast
    -amazing performances
    -stunning visuals
-story has problems but overall nice idea
    -score was great
-fifth dimension representation was neat and original

Their review really pissed me off 7.5/10 really? There are some movies that don't deserve the 8 or 9/10s they give them but this one is amazing. I'm still thinking about the movie replaying scenes and theory's in my head. I agree with them having to watch it another time because most of their point questioning the loopholes in the film are actually explained in the film.

I don't understand why critics are giving this film bad reviews. I saw it on the 4th and I thought it was incredible! Granted that's my opinion, and I must admit, I'm a huge Nolan fan, but there was never a point in the film where I tried to justify a certain flaw in the film just because I'm a "Nolan fan". The visuals were stunning, the sound design made me feel like I was right there with the characters, and the story got me hooked from beginning to end. I know everyone has their own opinions and I respect that, but so many people are complaining about this movie. I left the theater literally speechless. Am I missing something? What are your guys' thoughts?

Seen it twice and now, I really LOVE this movie. It is ambitious and I appreciate that so much. I already loved it the first time without hearing any spoilers so, it was all fresh for my virgin eyes/ears. I also totally forgot about MD even being in the movie so that was an actual surprise for me. I choked up, teared up several times - it's a beautiful movie. I do not care about any flaws in the movie because I "get" the beautiful message within. You can't call me a Nolanite either because I've only seen TDK trilogy + Inception, that's it.
I adore Jessica Chastain, Mathew McConaughey and Mackenzie Foy in this film. It's such a Feel Good Film and I "got" it! All this and I failed Grade 10 physics :)
I will see it again in IMAX next - buying tix in advance is a must :)

    My negatives:
1.I saw Matt Damon as a bad guy coming. When it happened, I was kind of sad that I easily saw it coming.
    2. Cooper did not even know his crew but whatever, lets go to space for who knows how long lol.The movie borders on trying to be realistic but stuff like that pulls me out of it. I don't lower my scores for movies because movies have runtimes. Some stories would work better in a different medium.
    3. I was saying to myself that I hope he is not "the best pilot around" character. I am tired of those type of stories and it was unneeded for the plot.
    4. It ended. I wanted more.
    Positives.
    1. It did not rely on supernatural gods or space magic. I rarely see movies grounded in reality that are supposed to be reality based. Everything is explained like a good science fiction story should try to do. It's fiction, so the movie should have fun with the science.
    2. The emotional scenes worked for me. I cried about twice, especially when he watched his sons videos after he came off the water planet.
    3. A science movie! I rarely get to see those movies. like high concepts like these, there add depth to a movie but understand that the general public might not want to sit through it. I enjoyed listening to them talk about science and I wanted to hear more.
    4. The movie was long but I had no clue about it's time length while watching. I was engaged throughout the movie. All of the storylines were interesting to me.
    5. Bias. I already agree with many of the themes within the movie because I already am pro-science.
I give it a 9 and will see it again. Definitely buying it day one when released digitally.

Yeah, it was kinda interesting the parallel's between the premise of the movie/the protagonist/and the commentary on the side of the filmmaker for this and Chef, like how CarlCasper/Jon Favreau is commenting on the dullness and the lack of creativity for profit in the filmmaking scene and how it seems like Cooper/MatthewMcConaughey is a sort of vessel for Nolan's commentary on the lack of creativity in cinema in general.
Oh, and I'd have to say one of the most striking moments in the film was actually the SCHOOL scene, because it showed, in that world, how desperate the people were that they had to compromise HISTORY to maintain a sort of status quo. That actually really got under my skin, and I think there was a sort of criticism towards the industry from Nolan there as well.
