  • Here is a short video on the process I use to create this small corrugated iron fence.
    I use some foil to make the corrugated iron, for a detailed description of how I make the actual corrugated iron you can watch it here:
    • Old Wooden Shed - How-...
    For the barbed wire, I use very fine wire, 32 gauge and twist it using a drill. It’s not exactly barbed wire but it give the illusion of being barbed wire when view from a short distance on the layout.
    It’s only a small detail for your model railroad layout but they look quite good when made in large numbers. It’s most suited to HO scale however it can be applied to many other scales and its not just limited to model train layouts, it’s also very usable for war gaming terrain and other military modelling or whatever.
    Thanks for watching
    Cheers
    Luke.

      +James giordano Thanks James, it is certainly cost effective, just need a little patience to mate them. It's also tough to find good looking barbed wire but this effect seems to give a reasonable appearance.

      Scott Downey thanks Scott, yeah it pretty hard to get actual barbs in HO but from a distance the braided wire looks pretty convincing. The trick is to use the smallest possible wire you can, 32 gauge was the smallest I could find.
      Thanks for the great comment Cheers,
      Luke.

    Goddammit. I've been building models and dioramas for years but I've been able to stay away from HO (which seems to be a black hole) but you make it look like so much fun that I'll have to build another room just for HO scale dioramas now. :)

    Thanks for the video....never thought of making a fence with corrugated paneling and already watched your video on that. Checked out the company which makes the forms and ordering them in 1/72nd, 1/48th & 1/32nd scales. In all 3 scales, I use a mesh bag that vegetables come in, like onions. Pain in the behind to cut between the mesh strips from the bag, but then I have actual barbs on my barbed wire fencing. Next time I do this, will put 2 or more strips together using your drill idea, then run some thinned white glue on the twisted parts. This and a few more of your videos I've downloaded for future reference when building a diorama.

    • @BoulderCreekRailroad
      @BoulderCreekRailroad  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      another great idea mate :) I've seen a few people try cutting fly screen mesh for barbed wire but like you said it's very fiddly and you have to be careful not to cut across the wire accidentally. That's something I might try in the near future as well. I like your idea of adding the two strands together with white glue.
      Cheers
      Luke

    You could add a great effect if ulyou detached one of the corners and maybe the barbed wire then use it as like a broken down junk fence in the background, cheers,

  • @erniestammers5121
    @erniestammers5121 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Again Luke I like the barbed wired effect, in the movie industry they use clear bell wire with knotted bits attached, you could do similar as when you put it into the drill add some smaller pieces between the wires and then twist the wire. I haven't tried it yet!

    • @BoulderCreekRailroad
      @BoulderCreekRailroad  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ernie Stammers That's a great idea Ernie, I thought about trying to model the individual barbs but I gave up because I'd have to do soooo many and it would take ages! But for small sections of fence or maybe for areas that will be close to the front of the layout where the viewer is close to the scenery then I'll give your method a try.Thanks for the great comment.
      Cheers, Luke.

    Lord Jesus Christ has blessed you with craft skills. The barb wire: you could insert smaller wire bits every so many millimeters into the braided wire, as you braid it with the drill, to bring the barb wire into full appearance.

    • @BoulderCreekRailroad
      @BoulderCreekRailroad  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the tip, I might look at ways to add the barbs... they would be very small but it would add an amazing level of realism for sure.
