- G`day Folks,
Just thought I`d share this little method of mine for chain wire fencing.
This is my second attempt at a method because I found the first method just too labor intensive.
This method cuts out the effort required to build individual panels piece by piece.
There is still some labor required, but a more pleasant labor in my view, as it cuts down the build time dramatically.

You use mosquito mess can you use window screen I have roughly 15 feet of nylon window screen and would like to use it on making fences

Yes it would be the same sort of mesh as I use
Some people use a finer mesh as used in a wedding veil as well
It's up to you,.,....best way is to try it and see

Might be easier to brush white wood glue onto the wire, then lay the mesh on top? OR use spray adhesive on the wire - that seems much easier and quicker.
Might be worth a go Ray......the mesh would need to be gently weighed down though until the glue goes off.

OK...good to know Ray.....my mate on Platform 1 has suggested pretty much exactly the same idea, so I`ll give it a go over the weekend and see how it turns out.
Most of this stuff I reckon, is not so much about getting the idea, but developing the method / s to make it work.
I`ll keep you posted with the results.

Nice way to make a fence,have you thought of using wedding vale tool for your fence material ?
Yes have considered that but I have used what I had in the shed.
There is fine mesh available if you can find it, most likely from a Manchester store.

Very clever idea, like the way you applied super glue. I have a great way to do it using my fingers 😏
Ah yes...been there done that and decided I didn`t like my fingers stuck together.
The wire in the Superglue is very effective if you want to give it a go, however after a while, you need to scrape the end of the wire to clean it because a Superglue ball builds up on the end of it. The ball starts to pick up more Superglue than you need eventually.

Saw an idea a few days ago of using a kitchen/stove/pan splatter screen. Only a buck or two at a dollar store.
you use 25 mm for HO (1" in the States) I guess I could figure half of that for N scale? That would be 1/2" in the States. Thanks!
As always Gormo, another good method for making chain link fencing, it's amazing what you can find out there to use for modeling purposes. Nice one.

Yes a gentleman modeller told me a long time ago to look at objects and things with scale modelling in mind.
I find myself doing it all the time now, so you never know what`s going to turn up.

A tip for the angled barbed wire. Angle it towards where you want to keep the people. Outward keeps people out, inward keeps people in.

Excellent Gormo! Is the mesh metal? In the U.K. we don’t ordinarily have “Fly-Screens” but haberdashery stores do sell netting for dresses etc and in black, or white too which I have used for Level crossing gates and fences. Great tip. Thanks for sharing.

The fly screen mesh is nylon.
I think the haberdashery solution would be closer to the right scale, so I would go with that for you guys in England.
The fly screen mesh is actually too heavy and over scale, but it`s what I had available, so I used it.
I feel the wire I used for the fence frame is right, so combined with a finer mesh, it should give a really good result.

Great Idea Gormo ! Use a vice to hold the wire frame for straightening/ceaning - much easier ! You would know all about flies in OZ. Don't know what I'm going to do in the UK, No flies on me !

In the UK, you could probably try and find the Ratio mesh which apparently comes with their fencing kit. My friend here in Oz uses it.
We use the wire mesh (25mm) for the flies here in Oz....the finer stuff is for the Mosquitoes.....LOL

I was wondering about the paint job. Any tips on that apart from the priming? TIA 👍🏼

You could either air brush or dry brush with a normal brush. I have dry brushed in this instance ,with acrylic paints. I have gone with the rusty not cared for look by using black, burnt sienna, brown and anything else that will give that random weathered look.
I have also painted a section near my goods shed, silver, to represent a brand new piece of fence.
It`s up to you what course you follow, but I would suggest experimenting on scrap material before you take the plunge into the final product.

Yes cost wise, especially if you need to make a lot of fence, is very good. The fine mesh is what will make the visual difference, however the fence frame must be close to as good as you can buy in kit form.

Hello Gormo. Had been frustratingly trying different fence ideas but no real luck. Should have looked at you tube. Followed your method. Great. But i was able to purchase a sheet of mesh at Bunnings same size as you showed. But it does not need straightening and you can build a fence up to 60cm. I also tried Selleys Quick Grip - I hate super glue. It worked a treat. Have subscribed and will look for more great ideas.

The fence built this way is not for the purists, but then again, who wants to spend many long hours building a scale fence when a simple method like this looks fine.?
Most scenic stuff on our layouts is usually viewed from about three feet away from the subject, so fences built with this method, look like fences from three feet away......that`ll do me.

Gormo, one thing I forgot to mention. For the chain wire. I purchased some wire through Ali Express some time back. I
It is the right size, aluminum colored, has diamond shape holes and looks really realistic. And it was a little more sturdy than flywire but easily able too be cut.I will use this in future... A1 meter by 60 cm roll only cost around $13. Had to wait a bit for delivery - up to 6 weeks- but its worth it. Another idea for your readers

Yes it should be.........depends on how fussy you are.??
Personally, I think if it looks good, it is good,
however some people are rather pedantic about everything being perfect, so it won`t suit them because it will look too heavy.
The reason I used the wire is that it is relatively easy compared to the other methods and when it is painted and weathered I reckon it scrubs up OK.
The best way is to try a test piece and see what you think.?
