    Serving in the US Air Force many years ago, I was stationed in Germany, lived off base among the locals. Seeing this episode brought back such wonderful memories of the European old world architecture and cobble stone roads.. One of the things I love most about watching your adventures, it's not all just sandy beaches and tropical islands. Better than any reality tv show on network television!!

      It's my hometown! Funfact is that the city of aalesund burned down. And we got help rebuilding it from Keiser Wilhelm II. Thats why the city has the unique architecture. it's called ''Jugendstil''

    Hi Matt and Jessica, it is hard to believe that there is a prettier town than the last town you guys were, but this place tremendously gorgeous! I really enjoy seeing the places you guys travel To on the boat and on the land. That town is just so perfect! Do you find the people that live there speak English? I just love seeing Georgie having her fun on the boat and testing mom and dad on land (maybe other friends boats). Your you-tube channel is like a good book, I just cannot put it down. You guys are definitely great people and can’t wait for the next video. Thank you.

      Thank you so much for the kind words! As far as language barriers, we have not had any trouble in Norway with a lack of English speakers. It seems these areas generate so much tourism that you'd be hard pressed to find people here that don't speak it.

    Gorgeous drone views in the opening shots. And you really caught the beautiful colors of the town. It would be easy to fall in love with a place like that. I really appreciated the historical dialog describing the town. It gave it even more personality.
    How fortunate to have met up with a fan right on your arrival. Nothing like a local to help you tour the best spots, especially one that has been following you and knows what kind of things you're interested in. Thanks, "J-Lo"

      @@MJSailing Several times during fall and winter it will simply be too dangerous to cross even for fairly large vessels like the Hurtigruten coastal express and you will see them waiting it out in ports right north and south. :)
      For as long as I know there have been quite detailed plans for digging a ship tunnell inshore from Stad, but it will most likely turn out to be to expensive to materialize.

      Hi Mike! Thanks for following with the journey. 😃 I guess you don't see us fish too much as it's not our favorite type of food. We're not into catch and release, so if we do catch anything we know it will end up on the dinner table. Not that we *never* do it, but only a few times a year. Just rewatched episode 19 where you explain your Cape Horn and your autopilot. I also have a Cape Horn so I thought I might explain my way. My Cape Horn is my only pilot with one addition, a Pelargic autopilot adapted to my windvane. It is very energy efficient because it uses the vane ruder to steer all the time. No wind, the Pelargic steers the vane, with wind the paddle steers the vane. Because the Pelargic doesn't "manhandle" the tiller but rather turns the vane it uses about 1amp. Just thought I would tell you about ut

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I looked into using the lower priced Raymarine 1000 (and open source PyPilot) to do the same, but never got around to it due to time and money.... as always :) Our main autopilot's average usage isn't high enough to worry about on our boat too often... but if we ever get into really nasty weather, when the constant corrections are really using a lot of juice, that's when having a more efficient self steering would really comes into play. -Matt

      @@mattjohnson6716 my boat is a Pacific Seacraft 27 displacing 10,000 so with some decent sail trim and balanced helmet no one is really working that hard. My Pelargic is made by Monitor windvane, so it fits really well. Your Channel is really fun...I love it

    Sailboats often appear to be motorboats with sails and not the other way around. I haven't sailed in years, but I found the best sailing for me was to fly to a destination and rent a sailboat, and even one with a captain, just like you guys did in Thailand.

    • @mattjohnson6716
      @mattjohnson6716 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup... and Norway was one of the worst sailing places we've been. The wind was always on the nose. And with the tight fjords restricting your angles, tacking was out of the question..... so we motored almost all of it. -Matt

    I had to laugh at Georgie not staying on the boat. We took two of our three cats on our last boat vacation. One is some what “special” and isn’t inclined to leave the cabin, but his brother is terribly curious and had trouble with his impulse to leave the boat and wander the dock when at Marinas. Get back on the boat was said many times.

    I only visited Oslo when I was in Norway, the homeland of my great grandparents who emigrated to Canada and eventually moved to the U.S. but my grandparents stayed in Canada. It was beautiful in Oslo. I felt like I was home. The men looked like me, my father and my grandfather. Some of the women were stunning. I would like to return. It was such a clean place. I'm not sure I would like to live there in the winter. It was dark most of the day, with sun coming up at 9:30 a.m. and setting at 3:30 p.m. on Christmas Day.

      There were very few metal boats we came across, I'd say they were 90% fiberglass. Turns out you don't really need the metal until you're reaching 70 degrees north or above.

    What was the mooring fee in Alesond. Cruise ships are a blight on all the locations they visit.

    A little side note, the wether report today is for 11-12m sea (40 foot) and 70 knots wind.
    Not a fun day for a passage 😬

      People aren’t that familiar with the Nort sea. I don’t live that far up. But very close to the ocean. So I have just been out checking the lines. It’s going to be another day with saltwater poring down the windows. Or...a nice day to stay inside. Just wanted you to know 😁

    The little fjord you were anchored in the beginning of this video is the fjord that a tunnel is planned trough the mountain for ship traffic to avoid getting around Stad. Here's a short video about it.
