1st Pacific Rim Movie was done with a passion from Guillermo Del Toro, whereas it's supposed sequel was looking like a Hollywood Corporate orders with clueless pandering which fails to understand what makes the 1st one ticks: it's flaws has outweighed by it's own charm This is why that even the overseas' reception of the 2nd movie wasn't as strong as the 1st movie, which says A LOT considering of how the advertising and screening of 1st Pacific Rim movie in both Japan and China was incredibly huge back in early to mid 2013
Part of the lore is that they were very good at killing kaiju, but very bad at killing them in ways that reduced collateral damage (the kaiju blood is toxic and nuclear weaponry left a tragic fallout), so the Jaegers are primarily designed to brawl, not to stab or shoot. You see it in stuff like, they only pull out their sword once they're far away enough that their blood won't spill on civilians (so far away that they're in the dang stratosphere).
I unabashedly love this film from beginning to end. It is everything I wanted from giant monsters fighting giant robots. The second film was a travesty that I will not dare watch ever again.

The whole thing was definitely missing that "Del Toro touch" in my opinion.
I agree with you and randomly found a video that explains why the second's action feels so dull. Camera placement and movement. The camera work is done in a way that puts the audience at the same level as the Jaegar and it makes them and their action feel less significant. The first one is done with angles and movement that make you feel like you are there and the Jaegars and action are towering over you. Did a great job of selling their scale and magnitude of size and destructive power. Second, not so much.
Yeah, like the fights in the first one were very stylistic & felt personal. Like you could feel every punch & every kick. And the Jaegars and Kaijus looked very unique in my opinion. Also, Gorgeous settings. Steven S Deknight was in charge of Daredevil season 1 and he did an amazing job. But Pacific Rim 2 had no style. It was just random monsters v random robots. It didn't feel unique or different at all imo. This NOT like your usual Del Toro film but I feel like he STILL put in his own unique style style into the first film. Like the film just stood out. At least for me. Felt like a lot of thought & care went into it. The sequel felt very generic in comparison for me.
Nathaniel Wall I don’t know the video you’re speaking of in regards to part 2 but the point is well taken; in the first one all of the action is shot from a perspective of one of the pilots or someone on the ground near the action. The second one is shot like you’re playing a video game and you can pause the game and move the controller around like a wireless camera to see all these impossible angles and it looks very very unrealistic. There’s a reason movies like this or Godzilla film most of their big set pieces at night and or in the rain, it helps hide a lot of the flaws in the CGI; the second one’s fight scenes are in broad daylight and it just looked awful and again very unrealistic.
"accidentally hilarious"? Yeah I'm sure they didn't intentionally get the very popular comedy actor Charlie Day to do an intentionally goofy and over the top performance. Tooootal accident. They're aaaaaall idiots
They threw away a lot of things that Del Toro specifically designed, they named several mecha as callbacks when the original naming convention was intended to avoid repetition (much like the design of the NATO phonetic alphabet), the weight of the mecha which was changed at the request of John Boyega because he was a producer credit, and the "ungrounded" floaty camera work
Pacific Rim: Uprising might be the closest i've come to just walking out of that movie. You like it, I respect your opinion and your right to like what you like, but I actively hate that movie. Listening to Del Toro talk about Pacific Rim and the decisions he made regarding the world and the way the Jaegers were designed and how they movie... It's like Uprising went out of it's way to go against that. Like as an example one of the things he talked about, which you touched on, is that he was heavily inspired by Mecha Anime. He wanted this to be an homage to the genre, but he didn't want it to just be like "Oh this is like Eva" or "Oh this part looks like Gundam". But Uprising went out of it's way to reference a ton of mecha anime and Kaiju movies. So between the fact that, to me, the movie kinda just stinks on it's own (the way the Jeagers move alone puts me off) but it also feels disrespectful to Del Toro and his wishes for how his creation should be handled. So I really just can't bring myself to feel anything positive about it. Also I know I spelled the name of the mechs 2 different ways, I don't know which is the right way but I'm sure I got it right on one of them. I know it's German for Hunter, but thats about it.
I went to a matinee showing of this with my brother and cousin and paid for their tickets. Halfway through I gave them each the full ticket price for wasting their time lol
Yeah as a pretty big fan of the original, I thought the sequel was just a joke. Felt way too cartoony (even more than the first, which actually felt very realistic, considering it's subject matter..)
Seeing that James is the man who knows everything about anime and this week covered Pacific Rim, it’s clear that the next caravan of garbage should be James just screaming in a room the name of every anime.
I'd be down for Star Ship Troopers too! Gotta cover the whole trilogy though, just so I can enjoy their pain at watching 2. The animated movies are a pretty solid watch
Ben cutting in his reactions to James and Mason just being like "Ehhh Ben'll throw it in, it's fine" is the best part of any video...and you two need to do the Alan Moore run, especially V for Vendetta but also LXG because I really thought you were going to for a minute but it was unseated by what was it? Scooby-god damned-Doo? Anyway, ya blueballed me and you owe me an LXG caravan of garbage now. I also want to see your reactions to the Batman/Batgirl Batbang in The Killing Joke. Look at that bloody list of excellent reasons to do Alan Moore! He's a bloody snake wizard, mate! He's always talking about misogyny in comics and then writes shit like the Necronomicon! Seriously, though. Like all joking aside, I'm not doing a bit, i'm pretty sure dude's got women issues. Not always as obvious as like Frank Miller women issues, but still....women issues.
Honestly I’d love their reactions on all the transformers movies. Those last two were especially awful (and this is coming from someone who really liked the first three)
I think the first film is genuinely a great film, and think the following two sequels, while totally full of problems, are still super fun films to watch
I love this movie! It's a great sci-fi actioner from Oscar Winning Director Guillermo Del Toro. It has impressive visual effects and an amazing soundtrack.
I was in LA when this was released, staying with a fellow Aussie. We and her US boyfriend at the time all went to see Pacific Rim. I was horrified at the Australian accent. My friend's boyfriend leans forward and gives me the thumbs up and says, "An Australian." I said, "no...that is NOT an Australian any day of the week." I hate it.
Tell me about it. Any time a character is identified as "a Canadian", performed by a non-Canadian actor, the accent they come out with is...I'd call it both inaccurate and extreme, and not like anything I have ever heard. Not to mention Canada is a very large country, and there is no "Canadian accent", but many accents.
I feel like I already heard them talk transformers, what about classic movies ie the third man, Casablanca - what are some of your favourite old school films (if any)? And if all else fails... just hurry along with ya marvel recommendations lol
You guys should do “Warriors of virtue” . It’s so out of left field, the story is like Pagemaster meets Narnia, except instead of a Professor X little centaur guy.... ninja kangaroos!!!! Yeah, you’re welcome, world. 😎
I swear the upping of the accent happens when ever you leave your area. My mild Boston accent gets turned up a bit when I go out of town. I just sort of leave my "R"s at home I guess.
I can attest to this, when I went to University in the US my trini accent got so strong other Trinis going my school had difficulty understanding me lol
Ahh yes, the random RvB clip to appeal to the gamers, honestly do appreciate it and the use was great comedic timing. never the less a great video, keep up the good work!
Pacific Rim: I'm an anime fan director (GDT) who wants to create a love letter to anime fans Pacific Rm 2: I'm a cheap Hollywood director who calls anime Japanimation!
One of my favorite movies ever. I know it’s flawed, but it’s great. Even though you know the outcome, the young Mako scene is heartbreaking to me every time. In closing I’d like to say that, the sequel is a steaming pile of dog crap.
The sense of it not feeling “real” could be chalked up to camera angles...usually if scenes aren’t shot from a practical human perspective, you are automatically taken out of the illusion.
lmao if those don't feel real because of the angles then I don't see how that isn't a complaint about Uprising since Uprising uses a shitty, lazy floating camera, the robots move like balloons, and the CG is just plain worse. All the action angles in Pacific Rim are made to either look shot by someone on the ground either on foot or in a vehicle, or shot by someone shooting from a helicopter. The framing/movement is imperfect and there's optical zooms as if someone is actually filming it. I think if they really care so much about 250 foot tall robots hitting 350 foot tall monsters feeling "real", maybe it's cuz they're 250 foot tall robots and 350 foot tall monsters. For a "CG movie", I really haven't seen any other "CG movie" put in as much effort bringing CG things this far from our reality to life. Godzilla 2014 doesn't look any more real. I'd chalk it up to these two not putting in the effort to properly invest attention into the movie while watching, or suspend their disbelief when watching 250 foot tall robots hitting 350 foot tall monsters which are obviously not real.
That's weird though, because many of the shots in the first film are more like "ground-level camera footage" type shots. Never heard of that criticism leveled at the first film, so that's odd to say the least.
@@MaxIronsThird I'm not really sure which movie they were talking about at that point of the clip either...but the talk about it not feeling right reminded me of another video somewhere on the inter-web, where someone was talking about the Black Panther fight scene where they are both free-falling and how phony it looked because of the floating camera. There they spoke about camera angles from where a human could be standing and what not. I think it was the guys who are vfx artists and they do reviews...but it makes sense.
Pacific Rim is the only franchise in which I actively choose to ignore the Sequels existence by any means. Never has a franchise been killed harder by its next installment then Pacific Rim by Uprising.
I never saw the sequel, but that clip (3:58) where one of the Jaegars flipped something off with both fingers made me very angry. It looked like something out of a Michael Bay Transformers movie.
@@michaelstrong5383 I am tempted to delete my comment just so you can maintain your innocence. It's so bad that if I describe the story people will think I'm lazily inventing absurd plot points to try and seem like a big man on the internet.

I just re-watched the LoTR trilogy for the first time since I was a kid so it would be cool to see you review those.
They did, right before Battle of the Five Armies, if I recall.
Holy hell I want to see you guys ragging on them transformers movies SOOOOOO much!
Someone never tried to watch Holmes and Watson in cinemas then
@@Crimblor well yeah I'm not a moron
Yea the sequel was stinky poo.
After three Zack Snyder movies in a row, it feels great to see some quality filmmaking and storytelling with Pacific Rim.
“Couldn’t they have just used a PlayStation controller?” Well that aged well.
Please do Transformers it might give me the strength I need to go on through this year
Seeing that James is the man who knows everything about anime and this week covered Pacific Rim, it’s clear that the next caravan of garbage should be James just screaming in a room the name of every anime.
As soon as you started talking about the EMP, I said outloud "Oh you mean an emp". And then Ben bloody put it in there
8:28 “you just hit dodge, they’ll never hit yeah” lmao 😂
Honestly, the Pacific Rim movies are some of my favourite of all time, I could rewatch them any day of the week, just nonsensical fun
Samething for me sometimes I just want to watch a scene and ended up watching the entire movie.
Honestly any of those sound great.
Starship troopers is a big love of mine it’s such a daft fun film, with a good piss take of militarism
oooh yes a Starship Troopers video would be awesome!
I'd be down for Star Ship Troopers too! Gotta cover the whole trilogy though, just so I can enjoy their pain at watching 2. The animated movies are a pretty solid watch
RedLetterMedia has a great video on Starship Troopers

Let’s keep the giant robots train going. Reacting to Transformers sounds fun

I thought they LXG. 🤔
They did a commentary for LXG back in february, I recommend listening it's a good laugh.

Honestly I’d love their reactions on all the transformers movies. Those last two were especially awful (and this is coming from someone who really liked the first three)
I cannot agree more.
I think every tf fan agrees
The first 3 movies were actually decent. But the last 2 you could tell he stopped caring about the franchise.
@@Sp00kyBones I mean, he did want to stop at 3 initially.
I think the first film is genuinely a great film, and think the following two sequels, while totally full of problems, are still super fun films to watch
Demolition man, I need your guys theory on the clamshells
I love this movie! It's a great sci-fi actioner from Oscar Winning Director Guillermo Del Toro. It has impressive visual effects and an amazing soundtrack.

Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 1-3 or Avatar: TLA, Avatar: LOK, and the Avatar movie by M. Night Shyamalan and then Avatar by James Cameron.
Lol the part where you guys showed Jeremy’s dogs, Gipsy & Danger. 😂 Also I’d be down for the Alan Moore adaptations.
ahh I just posted this too
that's amazing
I feel like I already heard them talk transformers, what about classic movies ie the third man, Casablanca - what are some of your favourite old school films (if any)? And if all else fails... just hurry along with ya marvel recommendations lol
I’d love to hear you guys rip apart transformers 😂😂
You guys should do “Warriors of virtue” . It’s so out of left field, the story is like Pagemaster meets Narnia, except instead of a Professor X little centaur guy.... ninja kangaroos!!!! Yeah, you’re welcome, world. 😎
OMGS the "can't you just use a PlayStation controller?" resonates differently in 2023. hahahahahaah
I swear the upping of the accent happens when ever you leave your area. My mild Boston accent gets turned up a bit when I go out of town. I just sort of leave my "R"s at home I guess.
I hear you. My accent cranks up whenever I encounter Southerners. I suspect it's a natural defense mechanism to screw with 'em.
I can attest to this, when I went to University in the US my trini accent got so strong other Trinis going my school had difficulty understanding me lol
Personally I prefer the first film, pacifically known as Specific Rim
Where the day is won by cartographers working out what Specific Rim is the problem 😂
Love this movie!
They basically made a live action anime that worked for once!
Check out harlock space pirate, gantz o, both animation but great!
Thoughts I love Cpt. Harlock! I’ve read gantz but not watched the movie yet.
I’d love to see you guys do the night at the museum movies, they’re such a wonderful clusterfuck!

Ahh yes, the random RvB clip to appeal to the gamers, honestly do appreciate it and the use was great comedic timing.
never the less a great video, keep up the good work!
Little did they know 2020 would not end for at least 3 more years...
It'd 2023 you've covered 8 transformers movies and I'm still holding out for Demolition man
the moment mason started talking about the theory concerning the Australian accents is the moment i liked this video
Everyone does it. It's like the difference between having a Scottish accent, and The Critical Drinker.
I love this movie. Giant robot fighting giant monsters. Anime level of character development. Perfect.
Pacific Rim: I'm an anime fan director (GDT) who wants to create a love letter to anime fans
Pacific Rm 2: I'm a cheap Hollywood director who calls anime Japanimation!

From one part of the hemisphere to another, your content is just perfection. Good balance of pros and cons. Also funny as hell. Thank you.

It’s completely true about the accents! My Australian friends turn their accents up and down for fun 😂😂
One of my favorite movies ever. I know it’s flawed, but it’s great. Even though you know the outcome, the young Mako scene is heartbreaking to me every time. In closing I’d like to say that, the sequel is a steaming pile of dog crap.
PLEASE DO THE TRANSFORMERS MOVIES. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH AND THAT WOULD MAKE ME SO HAPPY
The sense of it not feeling “real” could be chalked up to camera angles...usually if scenes aren’t shot from a practical human perspective, you are automatically taken out of the illusion.
Yeah, it's unrealistic fighting shot in an unrealistic way.
lmao if those don't feel real because of the angles then I don't see how that isn't a complaint about Uprising since Uprising uses a shitty, lazy floating camera, the robots move like balloons, and the CG is just plain worse.
I thought you were talking about the second movie.
I’m serious when I say Demolition Man is my favorite movie of all time. Ever since I was a kid. So my vote is for that, or the Transformers movies
15:09 god I love Ben from Canada.
Alright hear me out on this, instead of transformers how bout...the X-Men franchise?
Pacific Rim is the only franchise in which I actively choose to ignore the Sequels existence by any means.
Never has a franchise been killed harder by its next installment then Pacific Rim by Uprising.
Then you, my friend, have never seen Highlander: The Quickening. It retroactively ruined the first movie...and possibly my childhood.
Resident Evil?
Aliens. Fucken aliens. From the planet ...zeist was it?? The kind of name family guy would make up to take the piss out of dumb sequels. Dont worry allan. I share your pain.
"Natural progression from the first one" = "Remove everything that is good about the original and hang the story on minor plot points from the original".
