    Invincible is an Image comic book written by Robert Kirkman and illustrated by Ryan Ottley. Not only is it one of the best superhero books in recent memory (unfortunately the last issue comes out in February) but it is also one of the few examples of long-form, complete storytelling in a superhero comic. We see our characters grow right in front of us and the book is mirroring real life by ending instead of going on forever.
    Tracks:
    Migos- Mad Men (a.k.a. the only good song on Culture II)
    Geto Boys- Mind Playing Tricks on Me

      I don't know. That's Marvel and DC Territory. Although, it would probably do a lot better than most of those films/and/or those shows with the right actors and especially the right director. I would suggest putting it on a Adult only Program. But I think most animated directors in America doesn't want to create a none comedy animated series for Adults. That's why I personally lost my taste for Adult Swim a while back. It's like people have forgotten about Afro Samurai or Spawn the Animated series. Yeah, Spawn was rough around the edges, but it had potential. Also 2018 means we have adults in this generation that grew up in the 80's and 90's and got into anime. But I'm getting ahead of myself. My point is that if television wants to change in order to compete against the Internet in the adult animated department, then they have to change. Because whose to say some idiot director won't screw up on making a live action film or a live action show of Invincible, only to have it condemned or ignored by critics so it can have a better chance on Netflix. Remember Dare Devil?

    • @GuyLogen
      @GuyLogen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I mean not really. Long form storytelling is better but that doesn’t mean comic runs from these major companies don’t have nice complete stories. Since it is a multiverse for them, they can tell many more short stories. But yeah, we do miss out on some of the benefits of having epic Long form storytelling.
      But, it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of thing since the MCU is basically long form storytelling in live action form, with the addition of all their characters getting development. And this allows them to even advance on the long form manga style which only focuses on a group of people throughout its run whom often times have plot armor as well. Whereas now with Marvel combining long form and “multiverse” style storytelling, they can kill off their main characters like iron man and captain America and still keep building their universe with new and old characters.
      Basically what I’m saying is that there are benefits to both styles of storytelling and that one isn’t superior to the other. It maybe easier to get into if there is only 1 iteration of a character and 1 universe that expands around them, but a multiverse type storytelling isn’t inferior and has its own advantages as well.

    • @GuyLogen
      @GuyLogen 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jasonphung1795 Yeah, that's what I meant. Manga is easier to follow or "get into" since it's just one big comic but that doesn't mean it's superior/better storytelling Vs western comics.
      I feel like accessibility is more of an issue since in the west there isn't a shounen jump or something that releases weekly where people can just get that and read a bunch of comics in one go. It's all individual with different release times and therefore becomes less convenient for the masses.

    A finite story and continuing serialized fiction are different things. Pros and cons exist for both. I mean, if Daredevil had come to an end, there wouldn't have been Frank Miller's Born Again, Alan Moore would never have had the opportunity to write that Superman annual, and The Long Hallowe'en would have been 50 years after Batman's story wrapped up.
    It's largely apples and oranges.

Agreed, we do need both, but as a matter of fact the ratio between finite stories with clear beginning, middle and a conclusive ending like Invincible and infinite stories that keep reseting like most DC and Marvel superheroes is almost 1 to 99, we need a lot more superhero epics like Invincible.

      Think the best way to go about is kinda have a bit of both worlds. Make one main story with a clear beginning, middle and end. But then you can expand upon the previous story, with side stories, prequels and sequels... Possibly even make it a legacy title, where although the protagonists have a definite end, the world it all took place in still goes on, with new main characters taking the spotlight.
      So there is still a merit for continuation even if character arcs have an ending.

    SO hyped for the show staring in a few hours.
    Started reading some of the books again. It's just such a great comic for all the reasons you named.
    I Discovered invincible many years back when i went on a german superhero forum and asked for a comic. Always had been a big fan of spider-man, but grew annoyed by all the restarts and resets of everything, sadly every other book seemed to do the same and i just outright asked "Is there a superhero comic that dos not do this?" and someone told me "Invincible is exactly what you are looking for!" and BOY was it ever. Until comixology finally got around to offering it digitally on the day of release i did everything to get the current issue asap via other means after i caught up via the ultimate collections.
    Actually i only picked up the walking dead because i liked invincible so much and wanted more from that writer. I will never forget how disappointed i was when the TV show just turned out catastrophic (i don't mind people making money, but boy oh boy the writing is terrible)... i hope this is a great show, a big hit and on top of that gives TWD a second shot by becoming a animated show more true to the story consistency and darkness of the book. Streaming with it's smaller "viewers per show" audience size would probably open it up for that as AMC probably liked that their adoption did not turn people of by deep darkness.
    But for now, lets go Invincible! This is going to be great!

    I had heard of the comic, though like a lot of people what got me into the series was the TV series. Then I binged the comic and loved it. I loved seeing how our characters grew, changed over time, and how Mark tried to recover from his mistakes. We see out hero do some unsavory things but unlike with the Mark Millar style edginess that infected mainstream comics this series managed to make it work by making it clear he was making mistakes and didn't expect any second chances after them.
    At a certain point he even felt Mark wasn't cut out to be hero before his sense of justice was renewed by the finale. Not being willing to sacrifice his family for a vague purpose wasn't a sign Mark wasn't a hero. As the series has pointed out it's easy to talk about making sacrifices until the life of someone you care about hangs in the balance.
    After reading the final issue it was heartwarming to read Kirkman's look back at the comic where he stated he moved the deaths of the Guardians of the Globe to earlier in the story than he originally planned because he wasn't sure how long the comic was going to last.

    You probably won’t see this but I really like this video and I agree with this video showing so much love for the comics. This was my first comic that I read and I did it in 1 week, needless to say I love this story and it’s end. However one thing I disagree with is Batman. The idea that Batman just lets the Joker live to kill is what makes him special. There are so many great stories like under the red hood that stems from that fact. Also Batman did kill, he was called Azrael and it showed us that a Batman that kills is not Batman but another lame 90s overkill edge lord. Batman shouldn’t kill and his lack of change is a benefit of the story rather than a detriment imo. That being said this is one of the best breakdowns on Invincible, gave this vid a like!

    Read 144 then 54 Then realize that 54 can be disregarded but 144 is the cause of issue 54. But the ending was satisfying. Doing what he needs to do when necessary is a sign of Marks maturity learning his flaws and actively working on them but he still grows. Growth sticks, changes stick, death's stick betrayal's stick. And you along with Mark feel all of it on his journey. One thing that I liked is that there was no cheap cop outs and Mark is actually shown training. Invincible is forever an underrated series.

    We All have bring In another factor why Invincible came to an end Before walking Dead(not like that's gonna end) is because It was Largely unknown before the series and it wasn't image's money raking machine like Spawn or Wildcats (back in the 90s).
    But things may change now never say never.

    I really enjoyed Invincible until it was obvious Kirkman's writing is meant to go on for as long as the fan base has interest, not necessarily to get to a point. When the comic stopped running for a time it was because interest in the comic was dwindling, and Kirkman realized he needed to tie it off. The walking dead was stale right after the prison but it persisted for years due to a strong fan base. His writing is similar to George RR, but RR concludes stories long before their expiration. Kirkmans stories go on like a long winded shonen, where you eventually just get bored that the story has never seen an ultimate purpose, just one plot twist endlessly leading to another.
    While this series and others have finally concluded, it comes at well past the best and ultimately most important points of the story. Everything past the prison in the walking dead comic is regurgitation. I have yet to finish invincible because I grew quite numb to the constant string of hero failure which never seemed to lead to valuable enough lessons or lead to a point, just an endless string of shock value in your face, which loses all value after a period of time.
    Kirkman has proven to be fantastic at starting stories, but displays a consistent track record of botching the middle onto the end.
    I'll take Invincible over any of the main stream heroes though. At least invincible felt real for a time while the main stream bozos are beyond fucking fake.

      Truthfully, I haven't read the whole series so I can't comment too much. But form what I know, it's a retelling of years worth of Spider-Man stories in a fresh, condensed manner. So yeah, there's a completeish story, but it went through rehashed plot points to get there. I've only heard good things about the series, so I'm definitely not knocking it!

A trope filled story is all right, but the amount of similarities this story has with other comic books drags it down a lot imho.
