    In the name of all things budget, how can we bring this Dodge police car back to life for as cheap as possible? $115 gets us a BRAND NEW paint job, and boy does it look good!

    You could go to your local tractor supply or rural king and buy a gallon of tractor enamel and spray it out of a gun. It would've been cheaper and looked a lot better. We've painted our circle track cars with it for 20 years

      @jumpinjojo ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I 100% agree. Rattle cans are a waste of time and money and the finish sucks.
      Spend a little money on an acrylic enamel or urethane paint with UV protection that rattle can paint don’t provide. They fade and get chalky rather quickly.

    • @hunterton4310
      @hunterton4310 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      That would require buying a gun and a air compressor and that’s out of the budget. I think he was really going for keeping it $115.

    When using rattle cans:: When you are done, but still have plenty of paint in the can, turn the can upside down and spray until no paint comes out. This cleans the rattle cans tip.

    Temperature and prep is the key. If you're concerned about tapelunes, in the future, roll the tape where the two-tone is going to be. This will give a much lighter tape line than straight masking.
    My opinion, when your weather is warmer, do the bodywork on the '58 and do the blue and white two-tone paint job on it. Take off trim where you can, and tapenthe mounting screws in their respective holes. Tape is cheap, and the screws will be in the proper place so as not to accidentally run too long a screw into a spot. (Yes, I did that once when I was 11. Still remember that 41 years later)

  • @BrutalFates
    @BrutalFates ปีที่แล้ว +17

    To anyone that wants to do painting, the prepwork should take-4-5 times longer then the actual painting. Prep work really makes it come out its best.

    • @DylanMcCoolVideo

      @R.Sole88109 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This why I like patina and ratrods.
      That and you don't cry like a sissy when your new paint gets the first scratch especially on a pickup or 4x4 that by their nature will get scratched.😜

Me my self am trying to fight the urge to just spray paint my project car..I know I definitely shouldn't, I've been getting together supplies, air sanders, couple paint guns, hoses, dryers, regulators, a 2 stage 60 gal compressor, and a pop up gazebo I plan on turning into a paint booth to put in the corner of my shop. It's all about time, patience and alot of work I guess. In the mean time I'll try to resist spray painting my car..

    It's a nice coincidence, but I bought a 87 Diplomat, former Springfield, Illinois city police car, mine was all white, blue interior. It took about 7 months to get all the parts it needed, but it's up and running now. I stuck with the original 318, eliminated the lean burn, very low miles for a former police car, it's at 126000 miles, and it is very reliable. I drive it often.

    The wrinkling can also be due to a reaction with the paint underneath. Recommend priming first. Then panel wipe and ensure the paint can is warmed at least up before you paint.

    This was excellent. I learned on spray cans. Been doing it for more than 50 plus years. I do own all the proper equipment. For smaller projects you can't beat, spray cans. My biggest gripe with the rattle can has been the size of the spray pattern. So thanks for finding this rustoleum product. I got a can of clear coming, can't wait to try it. You are totally correct, the prep and application are critical. When i saw you doing the hood, i shuddered, i knew that was a do over. Have done the same thing. A body man I am not, just very critical of my finishes. Thanks again. That was a very good finish, wet sanding and buffing are really make that look great.

    • @quicksilver8180
      @quicksilver8180 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have found things like that to happen from not letting the paint off gas before applying more. Not sure the physics of how or why but I do know it's the solvent escaping the paint and if you recoat before it escapes it will find a way out by forcing the paint away making cracks and dots..aka solvent pop

    • @quicksilver8180
      @quicksilver8180 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But not to knock it what so ever, it looks decent and I have done several rattle can car sprays and although a lot turned out not so good,I have had some nice ones in recent years mostly because I have learned to do several lighter coats and wait proper time in between them. But the real trick is getting the paint thick enough so you can wet sand and polish it out if you do just a color coat, several coats of clear if you want to sand and polish that avenue.

I have tried turning them upside down while spraying the paint for 30 seconds. I've even tried taking the nozzle off and putting it in thinner. That's been my experience. Considering the amount of cash one lays out for a professional painter to lay a coat or two on, the "ten-foot perfect" standard is the best solution to tidy up an old beast. The great thing about using rattle cans and simple colours is that you can always go buy another one and touch it up if there is a need for repair somewhere down the track. Adding a clear coat to the base coat will add more product on the body and help the wet-sanding to smooth out anywhere there is a textured look to the paint without blowing through the colour layer. Great results can be had with the cans if you take the time to learn how they like to be sprayed - just as you did. The car looks much better and will certainly be an eye-catcher going down the road.....and for good reason! All the best.

    If the nozzles come off, blow them out with your air compressor when you're dine for the day. I've done it that way for decades, and I've rarely had one clog up. Careful putting the nozzle back on the can! If you make it spray you'll have to start over with the air.

    Something i learned at work is to paint in different directions for each coat AND to start the spray before its on the body, if you do it while on the body you get a heavy spot of paint. after the paint is done, use a fine grit like 4000+ all over, get rid of the orange peel, degreaser wipe down then a thin clear. then you can use a machine cut n buff to get a smooth clear coat and build up a polymer or ceramic coat and those last steps are what make a cheap paint job look like the real deal, it especially helps in corner details which is where a rattlecan job falls short. For heat, getting a hot bucket of water helps smooth the paint with lots of shaking, helps build pressure n get the most out of your can. its best when the paint and body are the same temperature.

    I just want to paint the hood on my beater Vibe. Gonna see if i can match the color close enough or paint it gray like the trim. Watching and learning. Nice work.

    Awesome for an inexpensive paint job…. But now I am dying to see the t with light bar and a decal on the doors? Not sure if you were planning on putting decals , but I think a police type logo with your Brand in it would be awesome!!! You are awesome man, keep the great videos coming 😎😎😎

    It looks pretty good. I had an 84 Diplomat ex cop car. It was a detectives car. Still, with the spot light, poverty hub caps, and thick Michelin tires. It just screamed cop car. It was built like a tank. I had many LEOs check it out.

    Looks damn good for what you paid man! Little bit of wet sanding, buff, and some ceramic coating, she’d look even better!
