Hi Dylan, I'm an old combat vet of the V/N war, 74 yrs of age. I love mopars, have owned many of them from the '50s, '60s, 70s. I've built my share of em , especially from the 60s. One of my fav engines was the Chrysler poly series. Until the 440, 383, 426 wedges. I'm 74 yrs old now, diabetic, and knees from two tours of trudging thru the away valley, and the surrounding mountains. But seeing you save so many of these cars n trucks, hearing them fire up and burn some rubber makes me smile for days. I built some 318, 361, dodge 325, and they'd haul, but nothing hails like a 440, 383, 426w, I wish I could build one today, but I'm a realist, I know what it takes, and I just ain't got the ways n means. But I enjoy watching a young man doing what you do, keeping them going. Great work young man!!!!
Another trick for changing the valve stem seals on an assembled engine is to feed a length of nylon rope in through the spark plug hole and bring the piston up against the valves. Holds them in place just fine!
What I love about your channel as opposed to most car TH-camrs I watch is that you give old vehicles a new life. What most of us would see as a hunk of junk, you see potential.
I agree somewhat but he does give up on cars now & then & they get sold unfinished or get hooked back up to the tractor for the "drag of shame" back to the wooded storage area at the back of his parents property.

Great video man, this one really got to me. I had a 79 power wagon that I bought as a partially finished project and I spent 5 years completing everything. It was a beautiful blue truck with a lumpy cammed 360 and edelbrock 4 barrel sitting on a 4 inch lift and 35s. I loved her so but sadly fell on some hard times and had to sell her a year ago. It was really fun watching you work on this one because I know every inch of those trucks and remember the dumb diagnostic port and everything else under the hood as I had spent countless hours sitting on those fenders tinkering under the hood. Thanks for this one, it brought back some good memories 👍

I had a 77 D200 with a factory 400 and 727. I installed full length Hedman Elite headers that were heavy 14 gauge tubing and ceramic coated. They fit beautifully, sounded awesome with dual glasspacks behind them, and made a lot more power! But they were 300 bucks, back in 2002!
Had a 1980 1/2 ton short bed truck like this, we used it for everything. I did not have big block, but a little slant six which did do well in ice and snow. I do have to admit I like the sound and power of a bigger motor. Your older engine bay is a little nicer to work on than the late 90's going forward, because of the engine setting back so far and the firewall cowling, You do nice job of laying out the project and the steps along the way.
Looks awesome under the hood after clean up! It's in great condition for a 1980! I can't wait to hear that big block start up and run! I hope that torque flight transmission is good and can smoke the rear tires! Take care.

Great stuff this is my ideal way of working since the 70s cash-poor but ample time swap meets recycling cleaning I like the direction your channel is going cheers bro
I used to work at a used car dealership. Once or twice a month a man named Sonny would show up and do under the hood detailing of all the auction cars. He only used rattle cans. 1 flat black, 1 gloss black, 1 high temp clear coat, 1 high temp silver, and then he had cans of high temp engine color in different colors. That high temp clear coat makes hoses, wires, firewalls and faded paint pop like new paint. LOL He was worth what ever they paid him. After the customer bought the car or truck that high temp clear coat would start to loosen up and look bad but it was too late by then. Oh I forgot the can of Gunk engine cleaner. He would spray the entire engine bay with Gunk and use the parts cleaner brush to scrub the crusty old dirt and grease off everything. The high temp silver makes old mufflers look new.....Wink, Wink Say No More !!!

Great job, Dylan. This is all very familiar. My daily driver is a 78 D100 short bed that I swapped in a 400 last fall. It runs great, literally drive it every day. 11 mpg.
Same my daily is a 78 w150 club cab with a 360. Now 4 barrel with intake headers, dual exhaust and soon a cam. BTW the alligator clip looks like the power wire he may want to hold on to that one.

I drove a 1980 Dodge Ram short box 2WD in Cordovan Brown with tan interior. Had the 225ci slant 6 with a 4spd manual. Loved that truck! Wish I still had it. Always dreamed about a 360 swap but never did it. Some day maybe I’ll do it. As you’ve documented. The old Dodges are everywhere.
That truck in Eastern Canada, where I am, would cost $$35-4000 as it sat when you bought it. Around here the rust from salt on the roads makes it so there are none left in that shape and are still overpriced.

Nice work! It is good to know that others appreciate a nice clean and freshly painted vehicle. It drives me nuts watching other videos of guys pulling a motor and just throwing it in another vehicle. My attitude has always been while you have it out, why not freshen it up. ty for the great content and teaching others how to paint correctly with a rattle can.
Dylan if you will pack your oil pump with either vaseline or white lithium grease, your pump will immediately start pumping, and both of those will break down immediately once it starts picking up heat in block. Plus the lithium gives you a little wear protection everywhere else including gears of your oil pump as does the vaseline as far as you have no dry gear on gear, and where they touch in the housing. I've used this at track when I've had to pull one's lower end apart to fix a number of things down there that require pan coming off. No cavation or other issues that causes pumps to be slow on picking prime to start drawing oil through pumps

I'm in the process of getting a shortbed Dodge truck back together. Mine's an '88.... was a V6, then a 440, it's back to being a V6 again! Factory Red on Red. I've got a few little odds and ends after spending the last 6 months putting it back together. Might be running this week. It's a nice little bookend to my red '87 Shelby Daytona.
Thanks for letting us know about the booster option(3/4t truck). I have an 87 D150 and I swapped the valve covers and later the heads but have been fighting the clearance to the booster the whole time.
Wish I could find anything like this up near Chicago. Driving through Tennessee this weekend came across a guy with a lot of older dodges and some older gm cars.
While it takes some extra time to clean everything, its nice to not get dirtier than a 1980's Madonna music video every single time you touch something😁

Definitely a sweet little shortbed. I didn't realize that there was anything swappable between the 400 and 383/440 big blocks! I done learned something today... can't wait for the next video!
The 383 and 400 are similar except for the pistons (the 400 has a 4.342 bore which is even bigger than that of the 440). The stroke is the same at 3.375. The big bore/short stroke combination still provides more than adequate torque for trucks and heavy cars which were the primary application for the 383/400 but allows the engine to rev higher than other big block engines which have a longer stroke. There were millions of 383/400 engines made that went into everything from Dodge Darts to Chryslers and many Dodge trucks as well.
I got a 1978 4x4 utiline short bed with a 318/727. It is my first truck and we have to restore it. It is the rustiest vehicle I have ever seen in real life and online. You are doing this just right. I think you should replace the rusty heater motor and wiper drive to help the engine compartment appearance. Are going to stick with the MOPAR ignition module or go for an upgrade. A Dyno test would be interesting. I like the turquoise engine paint. I had a lot of engines that color.
Very cool ! I have a 78 2wd Trailduster that will cruise on a roller throttle body 318 for now. I sat the 78 body onto a 1990 Ramcharger running frame. 318 / 500 od.
Nothing beats an old dodge p/u. Wish I could find my great grandpas yellow d150 318 truck. Got stolen out of the yard after he passed away. Probably scrapped by now
I used to polish my fuel tanks using 4 ought steel wool. It won't scratch like regular steel wool. You could use it to polish some of your grills and stuff with a little compound too .

The exhaust crossover isn't to warm the engine up faster, it's to keep the fuel from condensing on the intake manifold walls and atomized better.

Nice truck I'm in the process of building a 1979 318 auto long bed, doing transmission rebuild now found it super clean in az.

We had a '77 D100 short box. It was red with tan vinyl interior. Powered by a greasy 318. What a great truck !

Really wish i would have been able to get the title for my 78 before my dad ghosted me all i can say is i got to enjoy it for a while its too far gone now couldnt even give it away if i wanted to seeing you tinker on your dodges almost makes me want to turn a wrench again maybe one day ill get the energy

You are doing this just right. I think you should replace the rusty heater motor and wiper drive to help the engine compartment appearance. Are going to stick with the MOPAR ignition module or go for an upgrade. A Dyno test would be interesting. I like the turquoise engine paint. I had a lot of engines that color.
Very cool ! I have a 78 2wd Trailduster that will cruise on a roller throttle body 318 for now. I sat the 78 body onto a 1990 Ramcharger running frame. 318 / 500 od.

Nothing beats an old dodge p/u. Wish I could find my great grandpas yellow d150 318 truck. Got stolen out of the yard after he passed away. Probably scrapped by now
I used to polish my fuel tanks using 4 ought steel wool. It won't scratch like regular steel wool. You could use it to polish some of your grills and stuff with a little compound too .
