  • “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another-and all the more as you see the Day approaching." -Hebrews 10:24-25

It's FINALLY time for building the turbo police car! This 1986 Dodge Diplomat has been sitting for quite so time, but that won't stop us from having a ton of fun with making some power! Think it'll hold together?

My father was a cab driver in the 70's and they used to use old police cars as taxis and I remember this body style well, he loved it! Great job Dylan, keep up the good work, god bless and have a great day!

Love those Gran Fury/Dodge Diplomat bodies as I worked on them in the '80s! Most of the local police cars that we serviced were 318's. 4 barrels with 727 trans. Not a ball of fire with low compression.

Reminds me of a buddy who took an old Dodge police car and converted into a "commuter special". Some type of V-8 (police special??). Interior gutted, big push bumper in the front and most important.. ice cold AC. It looked, drove and sounded the part.
No one was going to challenge him in a road rage incident with that big bumper, solid steel frame and beat up exterior. Perfect for rush hour traffic.

Dylan, I just wanted to inform you that the transmission you installed is a TF904 originally designed for the cylinder slant six
later behind the 2bbl. 318. The most common failure of the 304 is third and reverse which share the front clutch assembly. You may want consider installing a shift kit in the 304 or installing a 727 transmission. Great job!!!

Hey Dylan, I just wanna say is that I think your the Jedi master of fixing cars. I’m so glad that your a dad now. I think your son will help you fix cars with you when he’s grown up. Also I want to apologize for what I said last year. It was just super unprofessional of me. I was like that bc of climate change. Everything about it is being destroyed & upsetting. But I’m a change man now. You know I’m also a big buddy with my next door neighbors at our lake cottage. For 3 years now! Piper is 5, & Mayva is 4. When I first met them they were 1 & 3. So yeah that’s all I wanted to tell you.

My uncle had a 77 Monaco that was a former police car. It had the 440 in it and one night he took full advantage if that when ran from the cops.

Well I just found your channel . I guess you know that original engine had 360 heads and intake on it if it was a four barrel police package car . I bought and sold a lot of those police pack cars . I always wanted to put a 360 four barrel police pack engine in a Diplomat or Gran Fury . I have a 88 fleet package Plymouth Gran Fury with a 318 -2 barrel roller lifter engine and I've got a 79 Chrysler Newport ex Texas DPS police pack car with a 360 that I need to pull out and put in my Plymouth someday .

I had a ex police diplomat back in the 80's. It had a 4barrel 318 and was super heavy duty. I sent a letter to Detroit with the vin# and they sent me a huge thick pile of specs and part numbers. It had weird stuff like extra thick seat springs and heavy duty door hinges for fleet use. Even extra thick ground straps for radios. Ran pretty good too, although the trans was a weak point as in most Dodges.

Very nice, one thing I will add having tuned a lot of vehicles including sniper, using the laptop is a MUST. The pre-made timing table is atrocious. Make your own timing map or find one online to use.
Also spend time going Over everything. Set up all the adder tables for fuel and spark.
The handheld is just for initial start up, and monitoring. Take your time and don't go heavy into boost first rip. Data log and do a light pull, take it home and review it, adjust, repeat. Cool project

When you don't have a bead roller for Turbo Tubing. An old mountain bike handlebar grip trick, is to spray it with hair spray and slip it on. Once you put on your clamps, it will not slip. You can use Dawn dishwash liquid, just takes longer to dry.

Ooooo, that main power cable mounting is scary, one good cut and a high amp short is made that you cannot do anything quickly about (unless you have a battery disconnect) and if you are doing 55 mph, you first have to stop, pop the trunk, etc., plenty of time for a fire to start. I would wrapped that power cable inside one or two protective coverings and then run it inside the car, under the floor carpet and on top of cushioning, or under the door sill plate protective covers, and out the firewall through a heavy grommet.

    Hopefully you learned:
    1. duty cycle style IACs are supposed to dance around to maintain idle airflow, this is normal functionality.
    2. The IAC is not 'freaking out', it's trying to open when the RPM suddenly dies to keep it running.
    3. You don't need in excess of 10 volts generally to start an EFI car, if you needed more then people would be stranded when their batteries start getting old. Basically if the starter has enough grunt to turn it over fast enough the EFI/ignition system will work.

If you haven't already one of the best bang for your buck mods you can do is switch out the transmission with a 904 lockup from an old C body with a 318 in it!
You will be amazed the difference it makes an acceleration! That and losing the three catalytic converters they came with! Headers from a Dodge Aspen fit in case anyone else has one and wants headers on it. As typical you might have to put a small dent here or there for them to fit in.
