What if Islam is True? - Sam Harris

  • During a debate with William Lane Craig, atheist Sam Harris points out that if Islam is true, everyone in the audience will go to hell forever, yet they don't seem to be worried about that possibility. Perhaps they shouldn't be so sure that their conception of the afterlife is accurate, given their nonchalance at Islam's threats of eternal damnation.
Note: I'm not posting this video in defense of Islam. I'm an atheist, and I don't think any vision of the afterlife is correct. Some people have messaged me about this, so I just wanted to make it clear.

We don't hate God just because he's the creator or we believe humans are superior. We are upset over the ridiculous stories found in the religious texts that shows barbarian behavior by this so called God and then we are fed this BS about God/Allah to be a loving God who actually cares about us, his creation. How can something so cruel but so loving not be a contradiction? How can people believe this being to be perfect when it clearly isn't? How can something so human be above us? Other than living in fear of God, there is no reason to pretend or believe that everything is great and God is great. It is very hard to see the logic with these beliefs due to insane stories that are so unnatural be taken so seriously. Fear is the only way to justify these beliefs and I refuse to live that way and I am better off for it.

7891Kman The Christians have changed there book Quran was revealed to correct it. You think God is your servant and you are the master. God owes you absolutely nothing rather you owe him. He gave you sight, hearing, life things that have countless value it can't be quantified. The very body you have his creation. And the most valuable thing he gave you is time.
      14:34 Quran
"And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the
favor of Allah , you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful."
Life is temporary abode for man we work to establish ourselves with good work for the next life. As for cruelty and pain all those who die in natural disasters, from oppression of tyrants, the mental and children are granted paradise.
‘We have sent you to the entire mankind to give them good tidings, and warn them; but most people do not understand this.’
      (Saba’ 34: 28) Quran
So the Muslim sees things totally different from the non believer. The Muslim never gets down or demoralized only for a short time even when we are struck by calamity which we see every day in Palestine, Kashmir, Iraq, Afghanistan, Muslims are tested the most by God but they hold steadfast. While the Atheist has all the great things in life but complains.
" O people, if you have any doubt about
resurrection, (remember that) we created you
from dust, and subsequently from a tiny drop,
which turns into a hanging (embryo), then it
becomes a fetus that is given life or deemed
lifeless. We thus clarify things for you. We settle
in the wombs whatever we will for a
predetermined period. We then bring you out as
infants, then you reach maturity. While some of
you die young, others live to the worst age, only
to find out that no more knowledge can be
attained beyond a certain limit. Also, you look at
a land that is dead, then as soon as we shower
it with water, it vibrates with life and grows all
      kinds of beautiful plants. "
      (Qur'an 22:5)

      TheGiantKiller8 14:34 Quran
"And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the
favor of Allah , you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful."
I didn't ask for this life. No human asked to be alive. If mankind is unjust and ungrateful but were created in God's image who is suppose to be perfect but we are not perfect, how were we created in his image if one is perfect and the other is not? Also, God is invisible and we are visible so we are clearly not in his image.
Why were we not created better? How could something so powerful, perfect all knowing and so intelligent create such a nasty environment, a flawed human race, animals killing and slaying each other and the cosmos blowing up and destroying everything only to start all over again. Why bother? God created us so imperfect yet demands that we follow rules and be perfect knowing we will fail yet allows it to continue. Most creators build a prototype to test it and work out the kinks. God creates a rough draft and doesn't bother to test his creation but punishes it for it's flaws. That seems ridiculous to me.
God isn't 'just' either. Murdering people and animals by drowning them just because you want to, isn't a good reason other than he is bored and wanted something to do. If I murdered an innocent child and got away with it, is that just? Why wouldn't I be killed in return and why do we need man made government to intervene for justice?
Non believers aren't just a bunch of complainers, we are using the intelligence we have supposedly been given to question our surroundings. Why does that not apply to a deity? God created us and put us here just to praise and worship him? For what? To pump up God's ego? I didn't ask to be put here, none of us did, so why do some of us have to suffer through terrible consequences but continue to be grateful to God? Why doesn't he owe us an explanation but I have to?
If God asks me why I sinned at any point in my life, my answer is simple because you created me and everything else to be this way. Not one person in this world is perfect or has been perfect so the issue isn't with me, but instead with you (God) and your precious perfect design. Ask yourself God, you created all of this, not me. Why do stars blow up and kill everything? That isn't humanity's fault, that is God. His creation isn't peaceful 100% it is very violent and very unstable at times. Stars and the Sun don't think intelligently or have free will but will still die or kill everything near it. I bet the Sun doesn't have to ask for forgiveness for it's sins yet it has the power to one day annihilate all life and everything.
      I rest... my case...

7891Kman Ok friend good post but your confusing Christian theology with Islam again. Islam came to perfect the misguided fallowes of the bible, idol worshipers and yes Atheist. The Quran literally debate with the reader. Its Gods dialogue with man. The only unchanged revelation from Allah till the end of days.
      2:28 Quran
How can you disbelieve in Allah when you were lifeless and He brought you to life; then He will cause you to die,
then He will bring you [back] to life, and then to Him you will be returned.
We are not made in Gods image no one knows what he looks like. Thats why we don't make images of God or prophets, idiots think we worship the Moon because they see it on a few flags which is untrue. ALl of creation is in SUBMISSION(ISLAM) to God from the moon to sun to earth, animals, all the laws in this universe are following a decree. Only man is given the choice to submit to God alone with no partners.
      qURAN
“He who obeys the Messenger, has indeed obeyed Allah, but he who turns away, then we have not sent you (O Muhammad) as a watcher over them.” [al-Nisa’ 4:80
“And We have also sent down unto you (O Muhammad PBUH) the Dhikr [reminder and advice (i.e. the Quran)],
that you may explain clearly to men what is sent down to them, and that they may give thought” [al-Nahl 16:44].
As for how we look it doesn't matter not important to God only piety and good actions. Malcolm X when he became Muslim he realized judging people on looks and color were wrong. Rather the Male grows the beard this is the sign of a man and giving up 'looks' and the girl covers for modesty and submission to God away from your whims and desires.
Lets say there is a flood and many innocent people die but God forgives all there sins and gives them ETERNAL PARADISE which is much longer than the 1-90 years you spend on this earth IT WOULD BE THE BEST BARGAIN EVER. We were informed by God that calamities are a test.
      QURAN 29:2
Do people think that they will be left alone because they say: "We believe," and will not be tested?
Ok friend atleast read the first 2 chapters of the Quran peace

I still find this to be the most compelling argument against any form of theism. Even if there were a theistic god, the vast number of different gods in human history makes it statistically virtually impossible to have picked the right one. And this in itself is such an unethical premise of any theism, that it seems crazy to believe any of them. Even if there were such a thing as a deistic god, or some kind of higher intelligence or being, believing that it has contacted us through one true scripture to me is madness, and a sign of unbelievable close mindedness and arrogance.

Mathijs Tieken You'd be correct if indeed "picking" the right god was like eenie meenie miney moe. I have a better idea: think about what it would mean to be the Creator of the universe and all of life on earth. Make a list of the characteristics that you imagine would logically be necessary and most befitting of this Creator. In other words, try to come up with the greatest, most sublime, most venerable, most majestic, most awe inspiring concept of God you can think of. When you're finished (and this isn't something you can do over lunch; you'd probably need to think about it for a few days, at the very least), read about the various concepts of God that various religions believe in.
I will humbly submit to you that the Islamic concept of God is that very one you might come up with, if you thought things out well. I cannot imagine or conceive of a greater God than the Islamic conception of God, and this reassures me that Islam is the ultimate truth, whereas all other religions are in some sort of error. If God created us to recognize and perceive greatness, would He not have created us to perceive Him as the greatest possible being imaginable?

Everything. Even in the case of a murderer, I would argue eternal punishment is unjust. Some people cannot grasp ‘forever’. it’s the scariest word. Think about it for a minute.
Condemning people to infinite damnation for a finite crime and that too, just 70 years IS evil.
When you say ‘god’ which god are you talking about out of the 4000 gods that have ever existed? Obviously, deducting the hindu gods. Every religion claims to have a divine intervention behind it. Every religion relies on pathetic reinterpretions of verses and I’m not forgetting the pety laughable ‘scientific facts’. And if there’s something bad or evil in the scripture, they say it’s not ‘literal’ no, god cared more about how poetic he was and not the millions dying over the literal interpretations. atheists are those who look past the ignorance and dogma. They see bullshit and call it out. They know how to tell apart nonsense from sense. I respect them just as I respect jainism and other non violent religions whose core principle Is non violence, and I respect people’s right to choose their own religion, that said, not saying that their religion deserves any inherent respect. And I’m not an atheist. In a sense, I am an atheist, and a buddhist as well. So, thank you. Have a good rest of your day. This will be my last message to you. I hope I have made myself clear.

And furthermore, you seem to have bought into the idea that religions make people more moral and make societies better, when there are in fact a wide variety of social ills (e.g. violent crime rates, poverty, etc.) that correlate with the religiosity of a society.
Yes, religions also do good things, but because they do bad things, then religious ideas should be subjected to the same standards of criticism that we apply to economic theories or political philosophies or scientific claims. - 0:17 That is absolutely wrong. Allah says in the Quran, Whoever has done an atom's weight of good shall see it, (7) and whoever has done an atom's weight of evil shall see it. (8) namely you will get rewarded So it does not whether you are a believer or not.
-In Islam: If you did not do anything wrong in life or did not take away others right, you will of course be forgiven by god. Allah is the most merciful.
However if you have committed crimes or hurt others, you will not go to the paradise until you get convicted, it does not matter how devoted you are or how much you believe in god.
    - Another thing in islam is that you are only responsible when you know completely that Islam is the true religion, however you are rejecting it just because you want defy god or you just do not want to live the life that islam imposes upon you.
    - Those who are trying and looking for the truth, will at least have excuses in the hereafter.

Moses did it as an order from God. And from each verse in the Quran, we take a lesson. And the lesson taught here is that what God ordered Moses prevented something worse.
The boy was not going to just become a disbeliever; he was also going to transgress and become the cause of his parents’ doom.
Read again from the verse you mentioned. From Kahf (70-85).
Verse 80. And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would overburden them by transgression and disbelief.
He would overburden them not only by disbelief, but also transgression.
The following is from the classical commentary Ibn Kathir:
      Qatadah said, "His parents rejoiced when he was born and grieved for him when he was killed. If he had stayed alive, he would have been the cause of their doom. So let a man be content with the decree of Allah, for the decree of Allah for the believer, if he dislikes it, is better for him than if He were to decree something that he likes for him.'' An authentic Hadith says;
(Allah does not decree anything for the believer except it is good for him.) And
      Allah says:
(and it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you.) (2:216)
(So we intended that their Lord should exchange him for them for one better in righteousness and nearer to mercy. ) A child who was better than this one, a child for whom they would feel more compassion. This was the view of Ibn Jurayj.
So the main message of these verses is to be content on God’s decree. The boy who was killed will go to paradise for his innocence at that time. Had he lived longer, he would have caused trouble for his parents.
Also note that this was an order from God for a specific instance. It is not an order which we follow. The reason as I mentioned was to teach us a lesson on decree. The two other actions of Khidr (A..S) mentioned here (in Surah Kahf) also teach us about decree: the fixing of the wall and damaging the boat.

    @zwektlvrai8116 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This is a quick summary about Islam and some of the reasons why we as muslims believe that it is the truth.
Allah is one. He is perfect, most powerful, most merciful, knows everything, eternal. He is the creator not the creation. There is nothing like him. He does not have children, neither does he have parents. He does not have a gender, he is not a man or a woman. He is not a man that he is going to feel hungry, thirsty or need to go the toilet or require to go to sleep and rest, he is above of all this.
This great creator is not like an absent father. Adam was the first man and prophet of god and god appointed messengers throughout history, for example Abraham, Moses who was given the Torah, Jesus who was given the injil. God gave the same core message to all these prophets to the community they were sent to, to worship god alone without any partners and to follow the messenger of your time. However these messengers were only sent to to a specific community at a specific time. The revelation that was given to these messengers are lost or corrupted by men. God appointed Muhammad as the final messenger with the same core message as all these other prophets and was given the final revelation called the Quran. Since this is the final message, this scripture is for the whole of mankind unlike the previous prophets who were only sent to their community during a specific time.
All prophets were righteous people and were given miracles to prove that they are messengers of god. Prophet Muhammad's main miracle is the quran, you can verify this miracle unike miracles that were given to previous prophets as you were not there to witness it.
The quran is the only preserved scripture that claims to be from god and prophet Muhammad is the only messenger to claim to have come for the whole world. Allah promises in the quran that he will preserve and protect the quran. When the quran was first revealed to Muhammad from god, he memorized and told his companions to memorize it. Today alone, we have millions of muslims that have memorized the whole quran. We have kids as young as 6 that have memorized the whole quran. Allah even says in the quran that he has made this revelation easy to be memorized. If we were to throw all the religious scriptures in the ocean, the only book we can bring back is the quran because we have it memorized by millions of muslims. I would challenge anyone to find me one christian that has memorized the whole bible. We also have manuscripts that have been radiocarbon dated to the time that Muhammad was alive. For example, "the birmingham quran manuscript" that was recently discovered in the last decade in the university of Birmingham in England.
Allah gives falsification tests. Allah says in the quran that if you believe that the quran is from other than the one true god then produce a book like it. Allah also says that if you think this is from other than allah then you should be able to find within it errors/contradictions/discrepencies.
Islam gives the best way of life and I challenge anyone to give a better way of life. For example, it prohibits 5 poisions that are destroying societies: gambling, alcohol, drugs, sexual immorality and interest (interest in the context of mortgages and loans). We have politicians educated at the best university possible but they can not provide guidance and a way of life better than a goat herder 1400 years ago that has solutions to the poisions that are destroying socieities today and instead encourage it and profit out of them.
The quran contains scienctic facts and prophecies. This is just one example of scientific fact found in the quran. To suggests that the facts mentioned in the quran is a coincidence when it has been demonstrated to be correct over and over again is absurd and delusional. Also to say the quran copies from the greeks is also absurd because there are things that the greeks were wrong about which the quran gets right. Also if it copied from the greeks then it would have copied the the things that they got wrong too but that is not the case. www.webpages.uidaho.edu/~msa/tour/ch1-1-a.htm video version: th-cam.com/video/sYajKl-Xr6c/w-d-xo.html You can find other examples from the above website.
We can also look at the the life of prophet Muhammaad and can rule out that he was crazy, liar, delusional, deceived and therefore the the only possible explanantion remaining is that we has indeed who he claim to be, the final messenger of god. The sayings and teachings of Muhammad (hadiths) is also more preserved than any history book due to the way it has been preserved. As Sherlock Holmes says: “Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.”
Islam is simple, makes sense and it fits in with your natural inclination that you were born with. For example, a god that is not like an absent father and sent messengers with the same core message and does not switch up the message and confuse people. He is not ethnocentric where he believes that you have to be born from a patriculour tribe or nation to be saved. He does not punish someone unless the message has been sent to them through messengers and prophets. Everyone is born sinless, a kid is not held accountable for his actions untill he reaches the age of majurity and understanding, neither is a person who is mentally unwell. The main beliefs in Islam is to believe in the one true god, his angels, his messengers, revelation that was given to these messengers, destiny, day of judgement and life after death. Allah warns us about eternal hellfire and gives us glad tidings of the opportunity to live eternally in paradise by worshipping him alone without any partners and following and obeying the messenger of your time. Islam is simply the submission of will to the one true god, a person who does this is called a muslim.

If u find it before u die them great, and if u didnt, the chances of u not being punished will increase bcz u are searching and doing the work. Its about your intention. Okay so there is a story a like in islam which is that a man has committed the biggest sin and killed, not just one person but 99 people. That guy had a vip ticket to hell, right? But he decided that he wants to repent but didnt know how or what to do but he went on a path to find the truth and repent, after he barely started that path, in the very beginning of his path, he died. But his intentions was that he wants to be good and repent, so he was forgiven and saved from the punishment.
So my advice to you, keep searching for the truth even if it takes ur whole life bcz ur whole life could end right now, u never know. And its better safe when sorry when we are talking about eternal suffering🤷🏻‍♂️ i wish you luck on your path if u choose to take it
