I stated listening to Dr. Harris about 7 years ago and was immediately intrigued. I was addicted instantly. He has a way of putting things into perspective, and he does it in a way that cannot even be debated.
He and a few others convinced me that it is pointless to believe in ANY religion. He and the other 3 horsemen opened my eyes to the silliness of it all. The contradictions… the lies… the unmistakable evil of “the good book”.
Aron Ra, Seth Andrews, Matt Dillahunty… I know I’m forgetting some others but… they’re all amazing people.

It is reassuring to see so many positive responses, as below, to Sam Harris. Maybe people are at last waking up to the truth but we have a long way to go especially in apparently well-educated nations like the USA, where as he says biology teachers are afraid to teach the established principle of evolution based on genetics, in case the parents of the students, remove that teacher from the school. Think about it.

Sometimes I find myself making these very same arguments when having conversations with my fellow countrymen in benign social gatherings. It is still to this day very surprising to see how Italians look at me as if they had never thought nor entertained themselves with such ideas and arguments. EVERY individual religious person cobbles together their own version of their religion, in exactly the same way that Sam describes religion doing it generally. EVERY person takes whatever parts of their religion they decide to, and rejects that which doesn't suit them personally...every single one of them.
For many, and I suspect it's the vast majority, what they may know or remember of their religion will be piecemeal, out of context, and nothing more than their own interpretation of whatever they may have heard and think they understood. They'll accept whatever fits their lifestyle and prejudices, and not bother with the rest. They claim to believe in their religion SOLELY because it's the one they were born into, not because they've ever done any honest religious comparison, in the rare case any is done at all. They generally don't really know much about their own religion, and it wouldn't occur to them to question it.
EVERY religious person is making it up for themselves as they go along, which means that this word "god" has absolutely no agreed meaning, so that it really has no meaning at all. Until ALL the world's religious people get together and agree on ONE god, ONE theology, and ONE mythology that is verifiably authentic, no single one of them should arrogate to themselves to expect ANYONE to accept their personal delusions.

Even if Elvis appeared again and said, “gotcha!” the reasons that people believed he was alive before his unveiling of gotcha, were bad. Same with if a god actually exists. The reasons people have are bad until good evidence shows to be true. Otherwise it’s just luck.

The concept of God represents our hope for manager: as children we were omnipotent director of our play.

Ya, we need SOMEONE to be in charge 😂. Every single one of us just popped into existence (in our perspective), and then the people that have been here longer let us in on what we've learned about the situation thus far.
I mean, to be a species with metacognition in our precarious situation on a planet in the vast expanse of this seemingly desolate and violent universe is terrifying. I get while we feel that need. I'm a lifelong atheist, but the first time I saw a total solar eclipse, I could imagine the dread and terror that something so bizarre would spark in humans with no understanding of what's going on. The wildlife gets quiet, the light is a hue that isn't normal, there are thousands of little crescent moon-shaped shadows all over the ground. Plus, let's face it, there's a giant black hole in the middle of the sun. It's a strange feeling. Even knowing exactly what's happening (we can literally predict it to the second), it was an awesome sight.
I just wish we could stop sh*tting on humans by burdening them with original sin. We deal with enough. We can be selfish and violent, and we can be incredibly selfless and compassionate. We developed language and can weave words into poetry to soothe others or use words to abuse. We are not filthy sinners. We have ONE chance to experience life, and this life is not to wipe your feet on your way into heaven. All we have to offer humanity is science, language, and the memories we leave behind in those who are still living. We are literally all we have.

@@willymack5677 In our lifetime it is a fact that political figures know zip about legal and international relations. Presidents represent the Nation. Vice Presidents deal in foreign international relations. Obama had great domestic policy, if one who is not a racist or bigot would agree to. But his policy outside our boarders were terrible. Letting the CIA use drones to strike weddings and birthday parties. Trump divided the nation with his BS. Biden cant stay awake long enough to remember which way is the exit. Don't get me started on our congress. AOC, a liberal representative who was previously a food server. She had zero experience and she makes more sense today than most of her counterparts and comrades. Wake the frack up. These people we elect because they seem cool are shallow and greedy. I think if we elected some highly intelligent people, they would put scientists in charge of science and education, instead of putting a neuro surgeon in charge of Government Housing for the poor. The definition of religion is that to which we are bound which is the entire cosmos. Humanity will go with the broader perspective, no one wants to be reduced to the elemental or the biological when the cosmos is ours. We come from it not from some mid-nineteenth century perspective on biology, which is just our outer coat, we are much more than that limited perspective ordains.
As well as consciousness and mind the complexity of DNA, of the cell is not fully understood. It appears there is intelligence there, and in the cosmos, that is causal to the full spectrum of life. Darwin focused on the cell, being clueless even about its complexity and equally clueless about much else; what is consciousness, (todays ‘hard problem’ ) mind, the electricities, electromagnetism and magnetism itself, which even today is a total mystery.
People are not ready to be so biologically identified with the cellular, with biology, that they ignore the full range of the human -- consciousness, mind, electricity, electromagnetism, magnetism, etc. The elemental and cellular; the biological, is important but focusing on it exclusively is limiting and at the cusp of a quantum age we can, and should, do better. Religion takes in the entire spectrum and that is its appeal.

The part that doesn't make sense to me in his moral arguments is that the amoeba can't comment on us, but we comment on God. We know better. There are layers of understanding of reality that separate us. I can't ask the amoeba how to do my job, and anyone who would try to do so would be insane. But here Mr Harris is what?? If an atheist was truly honest they would say "I don't believe in God, but I can't comment on God because under the context of that discussion I am the amoeba compared to a human , and an amoeba certainly can't comment on me, therefore I can't comment on God..logically". The amoeba in the petri dish doesn't know it living in a created environment and doesn't know its missing anything. Bible says God foreknows time. He knows our hearts and works all things together for good for those who love him and not evil. Layers of reality difference, can't even begin to understand. This very short life, "vapor in the wind" as the Bible puts it, is only a tiny piece of life; eternity is kind of a big deal. I don't think Mr Harris would call parents that shove medal objects in their children, booster shot, evil. The child doesn't understand. The pain only lasts a moment, but 90 years without disease are coming. The percentage of eternity compared this life in infinity larger. According to the Bible, children who haven't reached an age of accountability don't go hell, etc... We decide to follow evil; the whole world think killing our own children, abortion, and helping other kill their own children is good? An in the next breath say "How dare God condemn us!" ? ?
God gets to do what he wants. Yet According to the Bible he has grace. He loved us enough to die for the sins of man on a cross according to the Bible. All he asks is some faith. The Bible says the reason we don't choose God is that our hearts crave darkness.

And to those they will just keep changing the subjects, point to their absurd religious texts, engage in logical fallacies, circular arguments, false dichotomys, red herrings, and appeals to emotion or experience and of course more unsubstantiated claims and blatant lies. Thousands of years with nothing remotely valid. There's nothing left to hear for anyone that has been searching.

If you want to poke holes in fundamental Christianity here's a list: 1. If the Earth is only 8000 years old, how old does that make our sun than, and how do you explain Zoroastrianism which is older than Christianity (6000 years old), and Christianity been accused of stealing or copying their beliefs etc and claiming them to be their own 2. Why do fundamental Christians put so much faith in a book that's missing other books that were omitted (see Councils of Nicaea and more) like the Gnostic Gospels, the Apocrypha, the gospel of Peter and more. 3. What role did Pope Julius and Constantine play in establishing December 25th as the birth of Jesus? 4. This is the finishing punch as in " Mortal Combat -Finish him" lol. Ask John Lennox or any religious zealot/Christian on the street if they put up a Christmas tree, giving gifts and celebrating the birth of Jesus( Christ-mas) on December 25th, then say this. Well, as a rational clear thinking person, you must know then that 1. December 25th is in fact a pagan holiday (Winter Solstice)and not the birth of "Jesus" 2. The Christmas tree is a pagan symbol 3. Gift giving on December 25th is a pagan ritual? Finally tell them that their Christianity is not 2000 years old, Roman Catholicism is 2000 years old. Tell them, their offshoot of Christianity/belief/faith dates back to the 1800's not the "Day of Pentecost" as they falsely and erroneously claim, and is courtesy of John Wesley White and the Methodist movement. Ask them to also prove and provide evidence how they know categorically for sure their "God" is a he and they're not just being sexist. And look up the10,500 year basket they unearthed somewhere in the middle east and show them that.. I could go on lol.. Have a Merry Christmas

As our understanding of who and what God is, is sketchy at best, pretty much any depiction of God that didn't come from Jesus, is going to be a straw-man God.
Blaming God for children dying is a convenient trope. Promoters of the Bible as "the word of God" do themselves nor God any favors by it. Done of course, to spur folks to follow it, but the shelf-life of that idea has expired.
But rather than question the theologians concepts of God, which in many cases is still tainted with god-of-the-gaps mentality of God being immediately at hand causing physical calamities, atheists like Sam are happy to hang that failing around the neck of the religionist. And then, to add insult to injury, play like that's the only definition of God possible, and given any illogical depiction of God, use that as evidence for the non-existence of God. (Rightly believing that God should at the very least, be logical.)
Admittedly, I'm happy to have Sam put the Bible in its place, as there is now a superior text on who and what God is, and where he(she) is: The Urantia Book, which is a suitable replacement for the Bible.

This is a comment I just made elsewhere asking questions to Richard Dawkins, but I think they also apply to Sam Harris, who I think of as an even deeper thinker without all the pretension of RD.
    --
Dawkins talks about breaking the cycle of parent to child religion, but also pretty much everything he says is to him and his fans supposed based on science and data and logic.
My question would be what is the real concrete scientific basis to destroy religion. Most of you guys on this channel rally against Communism in every video posted, but wasn't the first social engineering tenets of what was pointed at as communism to outlaw religion? So is that a plus on the side of communism or a contradiction?
Also, what about military families, or police families or the family businesses where parents indoctrinate children into those societies?
Is there not some kind of parallel there that ends up pointing to the problem with human corruption (familial) in almost anything that humans do? Why not outsource children's upbringing to communes, or kibbutzes as they do in Israel, and if so is that not also some form or aspect of communism.
And finally, what is communism? We point to Russia, China, Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea, etc as communist such that any country we in the West call communist is merely a proxy insult for our stated enemies?
And did not Marx and Engels say that communism would theoretically occur at some point in the future in such time as the socio-economic system would be so fair and inclusive that the state would just wither away?
I'd love to hear some answers to these questions, because without a clear understanding of all the rammification of what Dawkins says it seems like he is just a hired gun to propagandize our system just as he says religion brainwashes children as they grow up and become or would become aware?

    • @mikedonoghues4018
      @mikedonoghues4018 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

If your defence of religion is that it acts as a bulwark against communism, that’s a fairly weak position to take. Harris, Dawkins etc. aren’t communists. Many would see communism as a political religion, with sacred texts, prophets, heretics and a promise of a wonderful future. 100 million corpses and numerous failed states in the 20th Century would more than suggest this is false. The enemy is dogma in all its forms.
And the question shouldn’t be “give me a good reason to destroy Christianity.” The onus is on the one making the claim to give us reason to believe.

No doubt he is very intelligent, but he is very ignorant at the same time. Especially when he refers to Islam , it clearly shows that he is either very ignorant of Islam or he is purposely distorting the truth. My advice to Sam is better reread the Quran if you have read it and try to understand it without any sort of prejudice. Unfortunately man’s EGO focuses 90% on why their religion is right and the other religions are wrong. There are many of the same spiritual truths in all religions that are the most important part of religion. My advice to anyone who is in doubt about if they know God is to forget everything written or spoken by man and simply be still. Remember every religious book you “believe “ in is written by man. The evolution of man and religion or Gods should be studied by everyone. By the way I believe in God because of my experience with God, and belief is not the right word, I know. I use the word or sound “God” just because everyone knows that I’m speaking about the spirit of the universe . Man made God in his own image. If you are a religious person and are ever offended or upset about something someone says against your beliefs, I can tell you confidently you do not know God. Why? Because you are lost in EGO.

Proverbs 1:7 "the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction."
John 6:44 Jesus says "No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: And I will raise him up at the last day"
You also cannot make an arguement that God kills children and at the same time be pro-choice. So why is it ok for women to kill unborn children but not ok for God to bring a child home? Death isn't a bad thing if the one that created everything calls you home.
Lastly you cannot not argue that people are taught the wrong religion so they have the wrong God and then end up in hell and at the same time want to keep God out of schools. If you're arguement is the truth will set you free then let's put God back into schools to give everyone back an educated choice to either follow God or not. After all that is our free will.
Sam Harris is a great example of a self defeating atheist. All things point to God and this God is Jesus which is provable historically, medically and all around scientifically.

If your "god" or any god wants me to worship him/her, he/she can get off their backside and ask me personally and nicely (please/thankyou stuff) in public before witnesses. If it needs a book written by committees, then it's not true. Grow up.

    • @johnbishop2611

@user-yp2hn2zd3q for example a air plane guidance system. read about them very very complex and the plane itself. I've never seen them construct the guidance system, but I know it didn't construct itself or the plane didn't have intellectual abilities to construct itself. We were made in God's image the Bible says so we are able to construct things to a certain extent. So something like DNA is way way way more complex than we can possibly imagine and even science itself calculations say the odds of it coming together of its self are so unimaginable. That the plane has a better chance and the guidance system to construct itself than that And their are millions of other things complex like DNA to compare. So when I look at the creation, a tree for example has the ability to pump gallons and gallons of water out of the ground to its branches and to the leaf scientists are amazed. It was designed and created by an all powerful God. That's my world veiw we have the same science the same evidence. But different points of view

Speaking of hatred of humans, we need look no further than the Bible where even Yahweh and his prophets indulge . . .
After a military victory over the Midianites Moses is angry with his generals for bringing home too many prisoners. In response he commands genocide, mass murder of infant boys, child sex trafficking and slavery:
17 Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.
18 But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.
