as a fellow Malinois owner seeing Bones for the first few minutes absolutely broke my heart. Malinois are supposed to be proud, self secure dogs that will do anything and everything for their owners. I really don't get how people can just leave a dog behind and break his spirit like this... it's devestating T_T

I adopted a year and a half low energy Malinios who was so fearful it took me two days to get near her. It was like having a wild deer in the house. I have been running her alongside my bike on hills and she loves it. Everyday. The exercise has transformed her. After exerting her, we work together going through basics, sit, stay, come and "follow me". She is turning out to be one of the best dogs ever. I am so proud of her.

@@andresjarrin425 It took three months for Marley to unwind and get used to daily routines. The months after that was just repetition and working with her (with daily exercise). I have also taken her to 2 dog classes which has really helped. The trainer was able to help me trouble shoot if I had questions. But a lot of it was on me; how I introduced her to new people, new dogs, new situations. A key component is being calm and let her come up and sniff on her own. Being in touch with other responsible and experienced dog handlers also really helps. A lot is just time, getting to know each other for a good bond. I've noticed that many people do not have engagement with their dogs and Tom Davis talks about the importance of engagement in his videos. My dog is really sensitive; you never have to yell or be sharp with her. I have to always bring my energy down a little so as not to startle her or scare her~just firm enough to guide her. Good luck!

Adopted a 3 year old female mal a week ago, she's literally scared of everything, sounds, other dogs big or small, she was attacked before I think cause she has some small scars. She follows me around everywhere, shakes and claps her teeth when we're about to go outside. She's also very guarding, if she hears anything outside my door she will growl or bark, I don't react to it and she looks at me, then she knows by how I'm acting that's there's no need to be afraid, same with other dogs she'll whine and wants to go after them, even though she's scared.
I'm training her as we speak, got her a good harness so she won't hurt her neck cause she pulls the leash, very distracted constantly like the sweetheart in this video, she's clearly poorly socialized, traumatised and not used to crowded places. She's already doing better, listens to a few commands and I feel like if I managed to do all of this in one week, she's gonna be perfectly fine.
And these videos help a lot, the rewards, lots of activity, changing directions to get het attention back, I'm applying it all, I even managed to let her off the leash and surprisingly she listens really good off it too, just gotta do it somewhere quiet.
Hard work having a traumatised Mal but I love it, gonna give her all my love and attention, she's super affectionate too, wants to get petted constantly, puts her head in my lap and nudges me with her snout if I stop petting her.

I have a rescue story to share. I did volunteer animal transport. One of my charges one weekend, Charlie, was a GSD. He had been abandoned, but in a home. (No food). This was during the housing crisis where many dogs were surrendered because when people were forced from their homes, where they landed was not dog friend. Many shelters were overflowing.
Now, here's the backstory. (P. S. in general I never ask how a dog ends up in a shelter as it is often too hearbreaking). Charlie was found thanks to a pitbull that lead animal control officers to the Charlie's house. He weighed 19 lbs when found. When I transported Charlie, he was still thin, but his spirits were good (which was surprising) and he was going to an owner that lived on a yacht! Rags to riches for Charlie.

I just adopted a rescue from Puerto Rico (found in a garbage bin) and she exhibited the same behavior of wanting to walk along walls and fences. She would "escape" to the corner of the fence and just sit down, resistant to move. Thanks to a lot of patience and your videos, she is 1000% better in the 2 weeks she has been with us. Thanks for teaching us how to rescue all of these sweet dogs.

Well he's not fully changing the dog's life he is basically introducing the dog to change and the dog is accepting it willingly. The thing is the reps and consistency of this that will truly change the dog. The proof of change is harder levels of distraction. He could not bring that dog back to New York right now although it looks like it. I agree though he does fantastic!

@@clairecakes9860 I fully understand that this is not an immediate fix within the videos timeframe. I only state that the dog is now going to, with further training, be able to function within society that keeps dogs as pets. And will be a pleasure to be around! And as mentioned in the video, is already starting to move into the sphere of a different state of mind. If anyone's under any illusion that you can fix a dog in the span of a day, well, is in for a reality check. But, I assume most people would know this, watching any video of training anything. Not even humans can learn something extremely well within a day ;P.
My initial comment was more abstract, everyone's so literal around these parts! The fact that Tom can make some absolutely amazing progress is great. And yes, the dog's life is changed, and will keep changing as he progresses. And this will hopefully continue when the owners come back and learn how to continue to set the dog up for success.
I think most of us, forget that dogs are animals, and as Tom has stated they need continual guidance and leadership. For some reason us humans seem to be ignorant to the fact that they don't think like us haha! So yes, it is life changing for the dog, if this kind of structural training continues for the dogs life. And doesn't fall back to how it was operating before. The dog, from a state of mind perspective, as exemplified in the video, is already on the path to success.
Humans are instinctual like dogs..but dogs do not have the complex reasoning skills/introspection(most humans are idiots with this one), like humans do. That's of absolute importance to remember. And I've always thought Tom's way of interacting with dogs shows it, and am always surprised at how some people completely fail to see the difference.

Coming from one dog trainer, about another... we are special types of people. The almost empathetic ability to get into the dogs mind- paired with much training ourselves... it's not magic but it is possible if the dog is in the hands of a truly good trainer.
And as with all things the training only sticks as much at home, as the owners are willing to stick with the structure recommendations that the trainer gives them :)

I have a rescued malinois who had never been walked in her life before coming to me. 'Taking the wheel', that's exactly it. Just like Bones she is highly fearful and super hyper. She would do the same thing, the trying to get away from the harness and stick to walls. I used my other level-headed and well-trained malinois to help her out. I would walk them together with the new one between me and my dog. Within 24h she was walking on a lead, no problem. Not the same technique...but the good thing about malinois is that they are easily trained and super smart so training goes quickly. Such a great job with Bones!

Found one of our dogs on the back of a patio, he was in his cage put out with the trash. He had no water, no food, standing in his own waste. He was very skinny, ears ate up by flies, bacterial skin infection and his nails was very long and curling around.
We have no idea how long he had been there but we knew he would never go back. We borrowed with no intentions of ever returning him. If we had called the shelter they would have just put him to sleep due to his issues. He is a chihuahua, love him to pieces.
The other dog we recently took in, the people was trying to find her a home but they couldn't because they potty trained her completly wrong. They told my son they was going to either take her out to the country and shoot her or put her out on the freeway. She is an amazing dog that just needed to be trained the right way.
It only took one day to figure out what they did, she would go pee then run to the door. I could tell by her actions they probably threw her outside after she went pee inside. She was also afraid of hands so they probably hit her too. She no longer does any of these things, she is amazing.
I could have turned in the owners but I wanted to save the dogs. The owners would have had nothing happen to them and the dogs would have been stuck in a shelter or euthanized. She has a corgi body with collie markings and the attitude of a Husky...an amazing little hyper ball of joy to have around.

We adopted a 4 year old Belgian Malinois mix 7 months ago. She escaped from her previous owner's yard and was hit by a car and lost an eye. She's gone from being terrified and cowering every time a car (especially a truck or an SUV) passed us to being pretty confident (although she'll still turn her head to see where they've gone). She's always checking in with me (and has been from almost the beginning).
We're dealing with pretty severe separation anxiety (she's almost destroyed her crate) when we're both gone , and nothing I try has worked so far.
    Otherwise, she's fantastic.

I found a pup in the woods and saved her. She had mites, lice, ticks, fleas, animal bites and more. I took straight to my vet. He cleaned her up with such a gentle touch ( I always stay) lol. Fast forward to 6 years later and I had surgery. My mom had to get a quick shower and I had to go to the restroom. I asked Moregaine on the bed and she gently got up( not the normal high bounce she normally makes). I said "help me up Morgaine and she crawed between my legs I grabbed her collar and she pulled back soo gently. I sat up. She got down stood beside the bed while I pusheded to get standing then I had to lean on her and I said take me to the bathroom baby girl and she walked slowly to there. Did the same thing to get me back in the bed. She was never trained to do any of this. I was shocked. I had that beautiful girl for 15 years. She was a Border collie. Dogs are amazing. I would die saving one.

I got to help train BELGIAN MALINOIS in the USAF MWD program over my 20 years. They are awesome dogs but have a very strong pack principle ingrained into their psyche. The random barking in the beginning of the video is the dog calling out to any other pack members saying "help, I am lost, where are all of you?". But as you see in the training, the dog quickly adapted to the new pack (with the trainer as the pack lead) through training. The being pinned against the wall is a defense mechanism where they keep one side of their body against an object to limit angles of attack from other possible predators. This is a low drive BELGIAN MALINOIS and they can make very good family pets with training. High drive BELGIAN MALINOIS do not make good family pets with any training and require an incredible amount of exercise which is more than most people can give them. BELGIAN MALINOIS are by far my favorite breed of dog and I would like to get a low drive female for a pet some day.

Tom, this guy has many similarities with my dog. The owners are so lucky to have such an empathetic and highly skilled professional in you (the two do not always go together!). Ours was locked away for the first 5 months of his life. First time our dog was let into the yard by his foster owner, he literally dug a hole in the lawn and buried his head in it and didn’t move for 4 hours. Didn’t leave his crate willingly for 9 days, peeing and pooing all over himself. If Bones’ owners are reading, the picture will change as he figures out his way in life, but they are so resilient in the face of adversity that he will come out the other end! I’m pretty proud of how far we’ve come as I was so clueless, he was my first ever dog and I couldn’t have done it without the experience and insight of trainers like Tom 💖

What you're dealing with is actually pretty good for Belgian Malinois who sounds like he received little to zero training. A lot of Malinois, adopted by people who are clueless of just how much work is not only necessary, but mandatory, end up being highly aggressive, biters, dangerous, and put down. Too many are unfortunately have that fate, because people think that they're so cool...having no idea just how much human responsibility and work goes into them being so cool.
For at least the first four years of a Mal's life you have to be capable of investing many hoursk of training, everyday, and have them as an inside dog. They are not an backyard dog.
I'm impressed that he isn't biting.

Agreed. A lot of Malinois are VERY civil - willing to engage man for real - as is the case with many working line GSD's. Tom's very used to working with these types of dogs and clear calm concise consistent communication is critical. Bones does not seem civil - but I didn't notice his age so he may be young or he may just be a sweet guy with a rough start.

I have a dog with genetic sensory processing disorder. Had her since she was 12 weeks old. Super fearful, anxious GSD. She is getting better with a LOT of work, but she still isn't 100%. Worst part is that she is absolutely NOT food driven. She doesn't care if she eats or not, and she doesn't follow food. Nothing really helps as far as training other than being able to run away to her safe place. Reminds me a little bit of this dog, except Bones seems to be workable, and Zoda just....is so tough. But,we have had her for 2 years, and we rejoice in the good. Her fear of people, fear of new things, fear of changes to her environment, attachment to her person (me), etc....are quite difficult.
You are doing an amazing job, even with one session!

I want Thomas to train my dogs too but I'm in Canada 😭 big fan I'm learning so much especially about balanced training methods. I had a positive reinforcement only trainer first who'd get upset with me even if I said no to my dog. But after a year I realized my dog actually needs to be told no here and there and she's so much better that there's now structure. Thank you Thomas ♥️

Just my 2 cents, but if possible go to the vet just as a walk into the building walk around the lobby and exit. He may start to see it as a place we go often. If you’re dog is into treats give some before during and after so he associates the building as a positive place. Wear your dog out before you go as well.

My 5 cent find a vet that understand behavior and stand your ground to them . I'm lucky enough that I found and awesome vet his first vet could not handle him at all and he was only 6ish months . This new vet sat on the floor with him for a good 30 min without trying to examine him I told them when I made the appointment how my dog is and how he reacts on certain stuff and if they could not handle that let me know . Anything they have to do I hold him since it's safer for my dog and the vet and staff. His vet told a new staff of in the back when the tech made it oviuss that she thought I was full of it and the vet said nope bring him back to the room with owner he is much calmer and safe if she hold him.

Some people really suck. 🤬

Bones is an angel in disguise. He is probably used to getting negative reactions out of people. My dogs also. So I introduce them to people by saying would you like to meet him, or would you like to pat him? My girl is still nervous when people focus on her so I encourage her to just sit and relax while I talk to people outdoors. If they start talking to her or wanting to pet her, she drops to her back and squirms around itching her back, to avoid interaction. I don't let her keep it up, only a half a minute then ask her to get up. Still, they have both come so far from 8 years no leash, free in the bush with a dog door, to leash trained. I walk them each 1/2 hour to an hour twice a day - together at night.

Omgsh that’s my dog. Rescued Mal but a female . She would slip out of any collar and is extremely anxious. Am working with a dog trainer as we speak, we are in week 4 and she had come a long way. She is not where she needs to be but the progress has been incredible. She does really weird stuff like stuffing her mouth with rocks when in walks to calm herself down. We replaced the rocks for a big stick she can’t swallow, her “binky stick” has seriously help to take her mind off cars, deers, people etc etc watching everything you are doing here to incorporate to her training. Thank you for posting this videos.

I rescued a dog in Oct of 2018 and was told he is a lab cross. They didn’t know what he was crossed with though. When I got him, he had severe separation anxiety, leash reactivity and social anxiety. I tried going to a group class for leash reactivity, but it was too much for him. In May 2019, a friend recommended her dog trainer to me. The first time I met him, he took one look at Lucky and told me that it looked like he was mixed with Belgian Malinois and he needs a job. After just a couple months of training, Lucky was so much better controlled. After 1 year, he still has issues but it’s like he’s an entirely different dog. My trainer taught me many of the same techniques that you used in this video with Bones!

    • @ruthacheson8604
      @ruthacheson8604 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hey Lester, I’m in a similar situation to you but a little further down the road...your dog is still young so you definitely can take steps with him. Dog parks can be very intimidating, it’s like throwing them into the deep end without armbands and that doesn’t always work out well! Time spent around older, calmer dogs who really could care less is definitely good to build his confidence. Around other dogs he’ll need guidance, so I’m not sure how beneficial boarding will be unless he is being worked in some way with the other dogs. I’ve found a local balanced trainer who has offered to take us out in the fields with his own dogs so that ours can interact with well trained “safe” dogs who can teach him some dog etiquette where he has space to run away if he wants. He might never be a social butterfly, but getting the benefit of the trainer’s experienced eye to work out why really makes my dog tick will be hugely beneficial for me, because like you I’m pretty unsure of what I should be doing. Oh, and look into the trainer’s experience and approach, not just their cert 😁
