Love your videos! You have a great way of explaining so that me as a pet owner can be mindful of what I am doing. Our pup name is Myla she is a 10 year old bulldog mix- we are from Houston Tx- will you be in our area at any time? Our girl is very excitable and is very much dog selective and she is very very strong and doesn’t walk on a leash well.

Exactly. I have a toy poodle and everyone is like, "OH MY GOD SHE IS SO SWEET AND POLITE". And I tell everyone, "yea it's easy. I never carry her (make her walk). I don't let her get away with stuff. I treat her like a big dog." But people always respond, "oh I could never do that! They are my bABiEeeeesssSSS!"

Some of the problem is smaller dogs are owned by OLDER people (my 94 year old mother-in-law) that can’t correct them so they become little monsters! My only dog bite was from her dog..
Sort of… I’ve also seen people let little dogs fend for themselves amidst a bunch of big dogs. The little dog is terrified because big dogs are trampling them and not respecting their space, but the owner thinks they should “tough it out.” That’s one great way to create fearful and reactive little dogs! The world is going to be a bit scarier when you are tiny, so I think it takes some extra work to help them feel safe. That doesn’t mean babying though.
I love that you stress not all dogs need to be our definition of social. I don’t need my dog to be overly friendly I just need them to behave. Taking your techniques and tips and applying them to my fearful pup has been life changing. Thank you for these videos!

It’s sad how some so-called trainers just take your money & does nothing to the dog! Yet there’s Tom Davis & some others putting out pretty much free training for everybody that actually works 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
That moment when the pup tried to bite and then the acknowledgement of his boundaries made my heart happy. So many trainers don't respect dogs as sentient, feeling, emotional beings...and it is truly a breath of fresh air to see content like this. Thank you so much.

THANK YOU - Really needed the reminder that there's no need to force dogs to interact. I live in London and the reason I don't let my dog interact with others around where I live is because they're all out of control and I don't trust the owners to be able to keep them in check! We'll just carry on working on being happy to sniff them from a distance 😇

@Paola B I totally relate to your comment!! Woooww 😭 We had an instance where my husband and I took our Spaniel to the park. We’ve been asked if our dog is friendly; instead, we said he was under a lot of training. People seemed to get offended as if our dog was “too good” for their dogs. In reality we want to train our dog as best we can and respect him too. Another issue is a lot of the other dogs at the park are out of control. We’ve even heard of instances where people end up upset because one dog hurts the other…so my husband and I just keep to ourselves with our pup…so yes I just wanted to say how much I related when I saw your comment.
@@daniyvette25 I completely get you! The odd look like there's something wrong with my dog after I decline for them to "say hello". I've shouted at people, purely for distance audibility reasons, to get their dog on the leash as it's running over to us, ignoring the owner's recall. Worst one was a huge GSD barking and lunging toward us before slipping out of her harness and charging at my dog when he was tiny and only a few months old (he's a Rottie/small terrier mix). I managed to grab the dog by it's collar (realise that's stupid, but... adrenaline... and luckily she was "friendly" ) while the owner slowly strolled over to get her all the while saying "oh don't worry, she just wants to play"... honestly struggling to think of a way to socialise my dog with others in a safe way with these idiots running around - might find a training class (although his obedience is gold star, thanks to Tom's videos 😊 ) purely to be able to desensitise my pooch in a controlled environment. Gosh, this turned into a long message!!
@@daniyvette25 i 100% agree with both of you too. i am realizing it's important to be selective of the dogs that interact with my dog.
Wow you sure can tell that little dude is freaked - loved you addressing the fact that behavioral problems in small dogs often doesn't get dealt with because there is less of a threat. Awesome owner too; the communication between the pair of you was great!

I worked with dogs for 60 years. He’s the best I’ve ever seen. Gives me hope for the future of the education of dogs and humans.
What a sweet, empathetic owner. You can tell she really cares about her dog and is trying to understand why he reacts the way he does and to make it better.
I owned a "yappy " chihuahua for 14 yrs. He didn't like kids either. Wish I had known how to train properly back then. I do now..thank you Tom Davis and team. Now I can get another dog and can be a responsible dog owner. So very grateful.
I wish more owners with small dogs would train them because most of them are out of control. Good job!

This is a great video. Glad it exists on youtube. Especially the statement at 20:15. I've had small dog owners literally say they refuse to train their dog because they can manhandle the dog, not realizing how unhealthy their mental state is without structure.

Great info! I’m a big dog owner and I’m real sick of small dogs NOT being trained to have manners!! She rocks for getting the help. Some dogs need correction with a lead and we shouldn’t be scared of this type of training! He got lots of love a positive stuff and he was so happy! Poor little dude being put on meds WTF are vets doing???

Videos like this are so important for dog owners. So often small corrections are all a dog needs to fix their behavioral issues, but if you take them to a vet all you're going to get is medication. Vets are not animal behaviorists. That's not what their training entails. You don't go to the same doctor you'd go to treat your bronchitis for your weekly mental therapy sessions, so don't go to a vet for behavioral problems. They treat the physical body, not the mind. I would absolutely go to the vet to rule out any medical issues that could be the root cause of the unwanted behavior, though. That's very important.

Thank you!! Thank you for expressing that even though they are little, medium or larger dogs, they all can suffer and it's our responsibility to help them to have a heathy mind and body!!
Fluoxetine can’t be “weaned off for a day”. It’s an SSRI that builds up in the system so missing a day isn’t going to stop the affects for that day. It takes anywhere from 3-6 weeks for it to show it’s full affects unlike a tranquilizer like Trazodone that kicks in in 30-45 minutes then only lasts for however many hours then it wears off.
Good techniques, I use more of a routine with guests coming to the door, desensitizing the bell/knocking if there is nuisance barking, go to a place and stay, bring the person in and make them wait on place then release to say hello. I’ve found that making them wait on place can build the anticipation to say hi which gets them a reward.
Glad to see this little guy doing better! Behavior modification is such a rewarding profession I don’t think I could ever do anything else ❤️ I love seeing the progress and knowing that I’m making a difference.

Thank you, Tom! I have a rescue MinPin who was on medication when I adopted him. I immediately weened him off the medication and have been working with him ever since as he is a fearful dog and behaves much as this dog in the video. After watching many of your videos, I began using these behaviour modifications to install confidence and to correct the things I was doing wrong. For the first time, I am seeing results and appreciate that you explain the "how and why's" instead of just saying "Do this, do that." Kudos to you and I will continue to watch and learn :)

I hate it when Vets put dogs on medication for a behaviour issue. It is not as if Vets are experienced or specialize in it. It is not their field of expertise . It seems if positive only doesn't work then it's Vets putting them on medication. People need to train their dogs . Make the time to do it and do it the right way. No excuses. Good owner for choosing the right path by seeing you. Great work Tom. Thank you : )

People usually let small dogs get away with too much because they are just small. However a dog is a dog regardless of size.
This is so freaking good! We have a small dog and deal with so much of this stuff! We actually just paid a trainer and felt frustrated and confused at the end of it all. This is clear and concise and so helpful! Thank you! ❤️

I commend this women for seeking help bc a LOT of small dog owners ignore these behaviors. Small doesn't mean dumb or not dangerous either. They can learn just as much as a GSD if you treat them less like a baby and more like a dog.

I always hated the fact people don’t want to train small dogs. “They can’t hurt you much!” No, but a big dog can tear him into kibble, why risk it? Sometimes it’s unavoidable but, seriously, the owners not taking responsibility is the cause of any bad situation. If you don’t want to train your dog, or even properly care for it - don’t bloody have one...

I'm so glad to see a small dog owner reaching out for this behavior. I live in the city with two shepherds who are pretty well behaved but we are always working to be better so the other I'm walking them and someone with a small dog just let their dog go crazy which sets my dogs off, I was able to control them with only one bark let out but why do I have to be the one to only control my dog? why can't it be more understood that everyone who owns a dog of any size trains their dogs rather than people with large dogs!?

I'm not a fan either. This video makes me realize it's because they're usually untrained terrors who never stop barking. A lot of people get dogs and don't train them properly or even consider their needs.

Wanted to lead with that because I do really enjoy watching this guy's videos. There is something uniquely special about watching someone that is such a master at their craft, that it almost feels like catching a glimpse of real magic.

I LOVE SO MUCH that you point out that not every dog needs to be social with every strange dog or human. We people don't want to get close to every person we meet. As long as the dog behaves and listens to it's owner and tolerates the suroundings, it needs to be ok for him/ her to not want to be touched or played with by strangers/ strange dogs.

Great work with Biggs, the Lil Pocket Rocket! It was fun to watch and learn how the same methods translate no matter the dog's size. I always love how you suss out what the owner's expectations are, what the dog's needs are and then come up with a reasonable and achievable solution! (We don't always like everyone and want people in our personal space, continue to advocate and realize your dog--or kids --don't have to like it either. They just need to be "polite" about it!)

Another great video! I shared with my friend who has a small dog and having issues. I really enjoyed the dog park conversation and visit! I don’t bring my GSD to dogs parks. It would be cool if you could do a video about dog parks and how socialization can be behind a fence. That would be awesome for a lot of people who think their dogs MUST be nose to nose. I followed a similar training ark. At first he reacted 9/10 times (dog, person, cat, etc.) After treats only training he was down to 7/10 times. After a year of enforcing constant boundaries(consequences good and bad) my dog had the confidence that he only reacts 1/100 times if an old trigger is present. And after now 5 years later he has a handful of dog friends he plays with and the rest he ignors and avoids.

Our little chihuahua mix is doing the same thing. She was a rescue when we got her 4 yrs. ago. Lately she seems more frightened than ever when anyone comes in the house. I'm going to try your technic on her . Her name is Rosie & she is the sweetest little girl around us. We just want her to be comfortable around everyone.
Found your videos about a week ago and I’ve been binge watching them. You don’t just tell someone what to do, but you take the time, and sometimes extra time, to explain why you do it. We literally just moved out of Albany, too. So it’s nice to essentially be getting advice from a “neighbor.” Keep up the good work. You’ve definitely gained a follower.

I love seeing a trainer work with reactivity in a small dog. I own a small dog, and know many more, and do not like it when people ignore how their dog is feeling because they are not a threat. I started following you when your were just a pup yourself - you’ve honed a new look and aged well. I just wanted to comment on the tshirt logo: DOG TRAINING IS ART. Yes, you’re an amazing artist AND you also really excel in the art of training people. Your internal muzzle, like a dog’s muzzle, protects others so they can listen and learn. Dogs and people alike are grateful you found your purpose.
Like how relaxed you are in every situation & how you teach owner's to do the same. You're very patient & I get frustrated/worried when I don't grasp what my trainer is trying to teach me, but your response to this type of situation is rewarding & relaxing to me. Thank you 😊 This helps encourages me to keep at it. Currently have a insecure 7 month old doberman pincher, I believe bc of her barking/vocal a lot & it's not at one thing or situation.
