StuG Ace Hugo Primozic Who Destroyed 24 Soviet Tanks In One Day!

  • Hugo Primozic was one of Germany's Sturmgeschütz(StuG) aces during World War II and was noted for his quick reactions, clever tactical use of ground and the icy nerve which in tense situations enabled him to hold his fire until his opponent had closed to point-blank range.
    Primozic joined the Sturmartillerie as a platoon leader in the newly formed German StuG Battalion 667 at the end of June 1942.
    On 15 September 1942 the Russians launched a heavy tank and infantry assault in the area of the battalion. Hugo Primozic and two other assault guns drove forward to engage the attacking enemy. The battle was fierce, with Primozic and his two wingmen repositioning constantly to avoid being destroyed themselves. However the Russian attack was defeated, and Primozic’s StuG alone destroyed 24 tanks on that day.
    He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross on September 19, 1942 promoted to Staff Sergeant.
    In the five months from September 1942 to January 1943, Hugo Primozic destroyed 60 enemy tanks and was awarded both the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross and the Oak Leaves. Hugo Primozic was the first non commissioned officer in the Wehrmacht to be awarded the Oak Leaves to the Knight’s Cross and one of only seven NCOs in total to receive the Oak Leaves.

    My Opa was a Panzerjager in the 8th PD. He said they didn’t keep track of kills. It wasn’t something they did. Many of the kills are shared kills and it was just doing the job that counted. When I asked him how many tanks he killed he got angry and said keeping track of how many men you killed is something you just don’t do

    AFAIK the cannon was not fixed, but had a swivel range of 24° azimuth -12° + 12° , and could bei elevated -10° and +20° or 30° in total. Also its excellent optics provided a much better situational awareness compared to other tanks.

    • @kevinwynott7755
      @kevinwynott7755 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I think what they meant by "fixed" was the StuG's lack of a 360° traversable turret......the Hull casemate being fixed

    • @tyree9055
      @tyree9055 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Just because you don't have a turret, it doesn't mean that you can't turn the tank! It's just not ideal for attacking fast moving targets because of the inability to keep the sight on the target, which doesn't apply to turreted vehicles (if they can coordinate their actions to keep the gun on target).
      🤔

    • @TheGrenadier97
      @TheGrenadier97 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      "Kinda of" fixed. That little traverse was more meant for accurate aiming, but i suppose crews just aimed the vehicle, particularly in short ranges.

    The requirement that it had to be smaller than a standing man helped a lot with camouflage. The fact that most were manned by the artillery core and not the tank core meant that they were not charging into battle but waiting in ambush, and their aim was better as well they delivered the first shot with precision.

      @@rscott2247 As Richard said before none of that would change the outcome of the war. It is common what if food for thought for many people in relation to German weapons of WW2, the reality is that Germany was so outmatched in industrial capacity and resource production that they would most definitely lose war regardless of how they managed their war production and which in particular weapons they produced sooner or later or in greater and smaller numbers. Yes they might have inflicted bigger losses to allies, yes they might have extended war for a couple of months more, but the outcome would still be the same. Russians alone produced 110.000 tanks in WW2 and bear in mind that they actually started to scale down production in the beginning of 45. Germans produced some 45.000 in total of all types. Soviets alone mobilized some 35 million men to fight in WW2, Germany mobilized some 14 million in total. Soviets produced and fielded some 520.000 artillery guns, Germans produced and fielded some 70.000. Tonnage of ammunition produced and used is some 4 times larger in Soviet favour and bear in mind that Germans used quite a bit of their ammunition on other fronts while Soviets almost exclusively used theirs against Germans so that disparity is actually even bigger, and so on and so forth... this is just to show how Soviets alone outproduced Germans, not even to mention other allies. In short Germany had no chance to win a war regardless of several thousands of vehicles of either kind being or not being produced...

    • @elektronischemusik1903
      @elektronischemusik1903 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can't compare stugs and heavy tanks like that. Both types had different intended purposes. The tiger for example was designed as a heavy breakthrough combat vehicle, to lead the spearhead and drawing and withstand all the heavy fire, so that light armored tanks like panzer 3 and 4 could move and work on the flanks. The goal was to punch trough enemy lines so that following mobile troops could encircle enemy formations. Stug's and Stuh's had more the role of infantery support and were used far more in ambush positions, where the biggest weakness of the stugs (the missing mobile turret) was not that big of a handicap as it was on attack runs. And it is in the nature of weapon systems which got used mainly in ambush positions to have a better kill/death ratio. Attack maneuvers are considered always as more costly as defending maneuvers if the attacking side does not have overwhelmingly better firepower. I think the average caculation in second world war was something around factor 1,5 attackers needed to beat 1 defender.

    • @HiTechOilCo
      @HiTechOilCo 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nazi Germany never had the resources to sustain and win that stupid war. The best tank design in the world means nothing if there is no fuel to run it and Nazi Germany was critically short of fuel all throughout W.W.II. Secondly, they never had the industrial capacity to even come close to the U.S.A. alone. When the U.S. lost a tank in battle, there were thousands waiting in reserve. When Nazi Germany lost a tank in battle, it too months to replace. Can't win a war like that.
