It's more complicated question. It's the same situations as at eastern fronts. Germans had too few and too varioius panzers compared to the allies. The numbers of shermans, churcills and T-34's overpowerd the nazi panzer, which didn't have good logistics behind them. Nazis were too fond of engineering and trying many versions compared to the massproduced allied tanks. It was bad leadership from the german side.

Wait so they were 10 klicks ahead of their infantry support, were discovered dismounted, received incoming artillery fire for ten minutes, followed by a two minute armored thrust that culminated in the destruction of ~80% of the unit...and they advanced to capture two of the three Jagdpanzers? Incredible.

My old boss served as a tank driver during the dessert campaigns in WW11 . He had no sense of smell he had lost it ; due he was told , of the effect of being confined next to the engine diesel fumes along with the ambient conditions. He could however now taste smells. He told me of an incidence of a tarp being slung from his tank to give shade to enable a doctor to operate on a soldier with a gut wound while he held up the plasma bottle. He was amazed he said, that when the innards were put back inside they were just as he said put in anyhow ,the doc saying they will soon find their proper place.

Another interesting video. Good example of what happens to any armor trying to advance without air cover. The slow speed of the Churchill made escape once they discovered the German ambush.

    • @colinkelly5420
      @colinkelly5420 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

What do you mean? The Churchills unsupported advance allowed them to reach their days objective, which they successfully held until the infantry arrived and consolidated. The German ambush was ultimately a failure, it didn't take back the hill or seal off the breach. By any standard a 10 kilometer advance which took a key geographical position would be a huge success, and while the German tanks mauled one squadron of tanks, the regiment had three other squadrons and was back in action the next day pushing forward. The Ambush was a setback in an otherwise wildly successful attack.

Doctor Felton, this is why I admire this channel so much. You give the complete picture. The good, the bad, and the ugly, and this was ugly. Yet, very few accounts of this brief skirmish exists anywhere! Most accounts of the 6 June, 1944 operations make it appear that the Allies simply marched in, drove through Europe and forced Hitler to kill himself. No swear. Yet, your channel pounds the viewers back to reality in that you present the truth in all of its details, or as much as you can dig up!
This channel is really something. I have shared many videos on other social media and history channels and people are very inquisitive as to you and your channel. With only 381,000 subscribers as of today, this seems like you should have two to three million. What can we do to make this happen?
Also, thank you for the quality that you are bringing out in your accounts! Nothing kills me more than a great story and very poor or non-existent graphics or images. You clearly have a mind and heart for this!!! Thank you for this!!!!!!!!

"Find out how three enormous Jagdpanthers surprised a battalion of Scots Guards Churchills"
    Well, sort of.
In a planned counter attack, a platoon of German tanks, apparently unsupported, managed to outflank and surprise an unsupported company of British infantry tanks at rest and badly deployed. They charged through the British position, knocking out several but failed to achieve their objective (driving the Brits off their newly won ground) despite having gained total tactical surprise. And having retreated it turns out that they managed to lose two thirds of their attacking force in the process of this failure; one captured intact by the enemy.
Not exactly an example of overwhelming Wehrmacht success and brilliance then. This isn't total wehraboo but getting close.

This story seems to be typical of a lot of tank engagements in WWII - heavy German armour inflicts high damage but then they abandon their vehicles for relatively minor reasons because they lack support. Truly, logistics wins out in warfare - but few want to read a book on that over a book on heavy Panzers!

I feel it should be pointed out that the 8,8cm gun on the Jagdpanther and King Tiger was not the same as the famous 88mm, the one that is usually seen in the tall multi-purpose mount with a large rectangular shield, or on the Tiger I. The latter was the 8,8cm Flak 18, 36 and 37, with the Tiger mounted one being the KwK (literally tank cannon) 36, all these guns maintaining a 56 caliber barrel. The gun on the Jagdtpanther and King Tiger on the other hand was never a multi-purpose gun, but was only built as an anti-tank gun (the Pak 43) or a tank gun (the KwK 43), and had a significantly longer 71 caliber barrel. The KwK/Pak 43 also fired a much more powerful shell, measuring 88mm by 882mm in length, compared to the 571mm length of the Flak 18/36/37 and KwK 36. This meant that the Tiger I's gun would achieve a muzzle velocity of about 820 m/s, compared to about 1130 m/s of the Jagtpanther/King Tiger's gun.
    For comparsion:
The Tiger I couldn't penetrate the Churchill VII's frontal armor (hull and turret) at almost any range (when firing APCBC), while the King Tiger/Jagdtpanther could penetrate the frontal armor of a Churchill VII at 2 kilometers. The tanks engaged here were Churchill IV's, with barely half the armor of the Mark VII's, so these Jagdpanthers at these ranges were probably able to blow holes straight through the entire tank (if the bursting charge in the shells didn't go off, of course). The KwK 43 was the most insane tank/anti-tank gun deployed during WWII, and probably one of the most, if not the most, powerful anti-tank guns for firing regular (non-saboted) ammunition ever made.

Emprahs Finest Well not much except that the KwK 44 was the 128mm gun on the Jagttiger, the Pak was the field gun/anti tank gun version. Had a much shorter barrel, and not as much propellent (relative to the shell diameter and mass) as the Pak/KwK 43, so the muzzle veocity was much lower, around 950 m/s. But the main problem with that gun was simply that the field gun version was stupidly heavy for AT use, needing the heavy Sd.Kfz 8 or 9 halftracks to move them, which were already needed for moving the heavy artillery, and this resulting in them being cumbersome to deploy in a fashion thats necessary for AT guns (eg certain flexibility and ability to react quickly to changing battlefield situations)
The other use was the Jagtiger, which was just a mechanical mess. So in essence the gun was never really succesfully deployed, even though it did put even the 8,8/71 to shame, especially at long range.

It was the magnum version of the old 88, same caliber, but much more propellant. It was the German equivalent of the post war British 20 pounder or the Soviet late war 100mm that equipped frontline tanks like the Centurion and T-55 and regarded as excellent until the 1960s.

Where do you get your figures from? The frontal plate armor of the Hull of a Churchill was between 102-152mm FLAT.. no angle. The Turret 89mm to 152mm front, again FLAT no Angle. The 8.8 cm KwK 36 using the following respectively. Pzgr.39 (APCBC) @ 2000m can penetrate 83mm at 30* degree angle and Pzgr.40 (APCR) @ 2000 m can penetrate 110mm @ 30* degrees of angle. Thomas L. Jentz. The figures are even better at closer range, and although the Churchill has massive armor.. its flat, one flaw the Germans corrected with the Tiger I to the Tiger II. Panzer Mark IV could knock out Churchill's on the flank with relative ease.

The Churchill was an infantry support tank, which was a role it did surprisingly well and of course a platform for many 'funnies', the Jagdpanther was a specialised ambush tank killer, in an engagement like this the result was not unexpected.

They didn't have anything big enough to tow them & from what I've seen on other channels, overcomplicated engineering meant field maintenance was very time consuming or even impossible. Lucky for the free world they couldn't get their act together.
