The plus rating having nothing to do with quality but funnily enough the plat and gold ratings are only found on the higher quality units. Yours may serve you well but I personally wouldn't trust a mid-spec psu in any system. My psu costed more than my first gpu and was triple what I needed but it's now the only part I haven't had to upgrade in 6 years, even with hungrier components now.
I was so clueless on my first build. Instead of taking too much time trying to find specific parts myself, I just asked on reddit and many people will comment to help you, I eventually chose one of the comments that seem promising and within my price range and viola, it’s now my current pc set up and I love it. The 80+ rating does actually mean a lot because with an 80+ platinum power supply it’s gonna take way less energy to actually get up to the wattage output of the pier supply compared to an 80+ bronze the money you spend up front is what you save on your electric bill down the line
The difference in power efficiency between 80+ bronze and 80+ platinum is literally just 9%, and like a 2% different from gold to platinum. If you’re buying like a 1500w psu that difference could be substantial but for most people you really only need gold at most, platinum is a whole lot more money for not much more efficiency.

i used 80 plus bronze PSU's for over 20 years no problems, even used an 80 plus white once, my last build was a 5900X/3080Ti with a 750w 80 plus platinum PSU
The rating doesn't necessarily equate to quality, a platinum rated psu is not more likely to last longer than a bronze psu because of its rating. The rating indicates efficiency, by using a bronze psu for that long, all you did was overpay your electric bill. A bronze psu just uses more power to get the same results as a platinum/titanium, the only reason higher rated psu's might last longer is that they generally speaking are built better, that's how they get the higher efficiency rating to begin with.
Or semi modular. Went from a Corsair GS800 to a semi modular PSU. Cable management was a nightmare with that Corsair thing, works great and stayed with me for like 10 years now. But alas, a 3060 with brand new mobo, CPU, and RAM needed a bit of an upgrade. I take care of my electronics :)

I work on computers as a hobby and it is always an experience. That being said, I have had probably 4 generic PSU's go out as well.. So I think I just got lucky with the big one.
People need to understand that the reason why they made 750w+ psu is because dual gpus used to be a big thing back in the day especially for those "futureproof" buyers. In this day n age, unless you're getting top of the line cpu+gpu, a 550w-650w will easily power and run any pc.

It's for the graphics card and what they estimate will be needed for everything. I have a 4070 and 13600k cpu, and all my other components put together in PC Part Picker calculated that I needed 550w. You should always buy more than that. I'm probably gonna get 750. Lots of breathing room.

As long as you're not going close to the wattage max draw, it's probably fine. The tier list is listed because of the safty features and quality of the ripple it can deliver. Ripple probably doesn't matter too much for low end machine but for high end and overclocking, it matters. Especially overclocking, as you can get more stable results with higher power draw.
Another tip for buying a PSU is to maybe consider spending extra on it to get the higher quality unit. A 1000w Platinum PSU may be overkill for your system, but you'll be thankful knowing you have a beefy and quality psu that won't blow up

Tier list is a good thing but this minimum psu is a bs. You need to know how much your entire PC will take. If you have low W cpu then even 550w will be good for rtx 3070.
The 80 Plus tier the PSU happens to sit at is a decent general indicator of the quality of the components in the PSU. 80 Plus Gold tends to be the best bang for the buck in my experience.
I had power outages when I first built my PC 10 years ago. I bought an uninterruptible PSU that was like 1200W $300 in 2014. I’ve kept it clean and never had an issue. If you live in a storm zone get a UPS
If you plan on upgrading in the future, just buy a psu with a lot of wattage like 800-1000+. If your concerned about overpowering your components, dont be, as the psu will only output what is needed for the pc and the pc will also only draw the amount of power it needs from the psu. (This was only an issue in the 90- early 2000s, its nolonger a real issue.)
Yeah bro I agree. I actually bought my pc parts along with an 850w psu but the thing I didn’t realize is that my pc actually consumes only around 500-599 watts so my pc has around 300w headroom for more upgrades
No. Please don't think that just because a power supply has 50 or more watts extra than you need that you can use the 'additional' power the way you think. Many components within a computer have boost modes or temporary sudden surges in power needs, and if the PSU cannot handle those times when all the components need power at once, then it will crash and shut down. This does not take into account that over time power supply degradation will reduce power efficiency flow by more than 10% or even kill the PSU based on several factors.

Yeah, power supplies aren’t going to be dramatically cheaper for their ‘performance’ by the time you need to upgrade again, so splurging on the psu makes the most sense of any other part in the pc, ig unless there’s some pretty case you want but that’s just subjective. If you don’t buy a better one now you’ll just have to later.
‘Recommended power supply wattage’ isn’t the same thing as tdp, if it was then they’d call it that. It’s obviously what they actually think you’d need for a full pc with that gpu.
There are a couple of reasons to go overboard on your power supply. 1. A power supply is most efficient at about 50% of its rating. 2. A higher power rating generally helps it handle transients better. 3. Powerful graphics cards take more power, so by going for a higher power rating, it is easier to upgrade your graphics card later.
Also not some no-name "Chinese" brand (and i mean cheap not like the Chinese brands are bad) cause most of them have true efficiency less than 70% (that's why they don't even have fake 80-plus cert on them)
Well yeah, if it’s not even on the tier list it’s almost certainly not worth risking. And if it’s a name brand that isn’t on the tier list then check again, because it really is quite comprehensive for anything you should even think about bothering with.

I never want to worry about my PSU which is why I just bought an EVGA 1000 G2 Supernova 1kW PSU many years ago. I don't even think about my PSU as a result. My backup PSU is an OCZ Z1000M which is also rated for 1kW.
I think it can be simpler: Select proven power supplies, look at the reviews. Leave a reserve of at least 150-200 watts. There are special calculators on the Internet for calculating consumption for your components. I’ll add on my own behalf - Never skimp on the power supply and motherboard, otherwise you risk losing the entire computer. Also install surge protectors with all protections or a voltage stabilizer in your outlet
The psu is one of if not THE most important part of any build. The hard part is knowing if it's a good psu despite the rating and wattage. Even reputable manufacturers make power supplies that are paramount to trash,wasting electricity and causing excess heat.
Another thing to check is if your PSU is compatible with the parts in your build with it cable connections etc. Also some reputable brands don't always hit it out of the park so yes seasonic is up there but their S12II psus have had issues.

TL;DR Unless you're an extreme enthusiast, A, B, and C tiers are interchangeable. A lot of people get this wrong: the tiers are not the end-all be-all of a PSU's quality nor endurance. The tier lists look for a bunch of features that the vast majority of users will never even get close to needing. Hell, even a D-tier PSU will work for lower-end builds, and a C-tier is enough for your high-end 4080 build.
Picking psu means to pick by watts of whole pc, not only graphics card. For example, you cpu could eat 120w on high performance. So I recommend to calculate total watt cost by any online calculator f.e. by "be quite"
I always get my PSU to be suitable for the present upgrade and for potential next one, saves the hussle of rewiring everything and getting a new psu everytime
I have a 6600xt and use a 500w psu i highly doubt my pc ever goes anywhere near 400 watts usually recommended psu is like 150-200 watts higher at sometimes
PSU recommendations seem to be generally worst case scenario. Your power requirements are going to be a lot different if you have a 14900k and 10 case fans than they are if you have a Ryzen 5600 with 2 case fans, for example.
Should have just kept it simple. Tier = Quality 80 Plus is an EFFICIENCY rating, only has to do with AC to DC conversion losses. And if you go over 1200W in the US, you really should have a 15 Amp rated circuit/wall plug.
If you wanna be safe just buy a pre built pc or if you wanna build it yourself you can order a kit. It will save a lot of time because you don’t have to double check all the pc parts and make sure they work with each other because the company should’ve already checked that themselves.
My 500W 80 bronze is completely fine for my rx 6700 xt. It takes like 300W from the plug during stress. Meanwhile minimum required for this GPU is 650W...

honestly if you have the money, just get the highest watt, best rated psu cus one you upgrade, you wont have to upgrade ur PSU (hopefully lol) i reccommend any of the NZXT C gold ones, theyre all A rated and fairly cheap in the UK atleast... 850W A rated PSU for 100$ is very good! thats what I'm getting for my build :)

For about 6000usd anyone can buy 80plus. 80+ means literaly nothing, they dont check the PSU after the testing. And the thing about tier list is awesome.
Another thing on the topic of power supplies, is to make sure that the one you choose has the appropriate number of outputs for your system components. I just purchased a be quiet pure power 12m 750 for my build & although I was happy with the product quality, it did not have enough pcie cables to support my MSI 6800 XT graphics card which requires three pcie cables.

The 80 plus sticker doesn't mean anything, but how much power is efficiently utilised under X amount of load.
The 80 plus standard was introduced in 2004 and first psu was released 2005 from Seasonic so not over 20 years ago....
being modular is also another thing to look for. Its not essential, but makes the build much easier and nicer.

I bought a generic 1000w power supply back in 2019 for $50 on eBay and it's still trucking along to this day lol.

Zach here made a short explaining the pricing (granted, it was two weeks _after_ you sent this comment), and long story short, the consulting includes detailed reasons as to why he went with that specific choice as well as alternatives to the parts, whether that be more bang for the buck, better reliability etc.
as for why he charges that much for consulting, it is to separate the clientele of easier-to-work-with people that need genuine help from people that just ask for the sake of, well, asking. he gets hundreds of questions a day via various SM platforms that are just "does this GPU work with this CPU", and obviously, after a while, it starts getting on the nerves.

It's for the graphics card and what they estimate will be needed for everything. I have a 4070 and 13600k cpu, and all my other components put together in PC Part Picker calculated that I needed 550w. You should always buy more than that. I'm probably gonna get 750. Lots of breathing room.

Actually the 80plus bronze is pretty good. I am running a 6600xt with a 550w bronze Seasonic PSU and it runs fine until now with no problems .

As long as you're not going close to the wattage max draw, it's probably fine. The tier list is listed because of the safty features and quality of the ripple it can deliver.
Ripple probably doesn't matter too much for low end machine but for high end and overclocking, it matters. Especially overclocking, as you can get more stable results with higher power draw.
Another tip for buying a PSU is to maybe consider spending extra on it to get the higher quality unit. A 1000w Platinum PSU may be overkill for your system, but you'll be thankful knowing you have a beefy and quality psu that won't blow up

Tier list is a good thing but this minimum psu is a bs. You need to know how much your entire PC will take. If you have low W cpu then even 550w will be good for rtx 3070.

The 80 Plus tier the PSU happens to sit at is a decent general indicator of the quality of the components in the PSU. 80 Plus Gold tends to be the best bang for the buck in my experience.

I had power outages when I first built my PC 10 years ago. I bought an uninterruptible PSU that was like 1200W $300 in 2014. I’ve kept it clean and never had an issue. If you live in a storm zone get a UPS

If you plan on upgrading in the future, just buy a psu with a lot of wattage like 800-1000+. If your concerned about overpowering your components, dont be, as the psu will only output what is needed for the pc and the pc will also only draw the amount of power it needs from the psu. (This was only an issue in the 90- early 2000s, its nolonger a real issue.)

No. Please don't think that just because a power supply has 50 or more watts extra than you need that you can use the 'additional' power the way you think. Many components within a computer have boost modes or temporary sudden surges in power needs, and if the PSU cannot handle those times when all the components need power at once, then it will crash and shut down. This does not take into account that over time power supply degradation will reduce power efficiency flow by more than 10% or even kill the PSU based on several factors.
Okay I don't want to hate on info but the gold, and bronze and all that is important because it tells how efficient the power supply will distribute power to the devices or something along the lines of that
I thought some manufacturers had a whole fiasco where because they only test at certain % usage or something they would make it so only at those %'s it would be properly working at the rating

Yeah, power supplies aren’t going to be dramatically cheaper for their ‘performance’ by the time you need to upgrade again, so splurging on the psu makes the most sense of any other part in the pc, ig unless there’s some pretty case you want but that’s just subjective. If you don’t buy a better one now you’ll just have to later.

There are a couple of reasons to go overboard on your power supply. 1. A power supply is most efficient at about 50% of its rating. 2. A higher power rating generally helps it handle transients better. 3. Powerful graphics cards take more power, so by going for a higher power rating, it is easier to upgrade your graphics card later.
Also not some no-name "Chinese" brand (and i mean cheap not like the Chinese brands are bad) cause most of them have true efficiency less than 70% (that's why they don't even have fake 80-plus cert on them)
Well yeah, if it’s not even on the tier list it’s almost certainly not worth risking. And if it’s a name brand that isn’t on the tier list then check again, because it really is quite comprehensive for anything you should even think about bothering with.

I never want to worry about my PSU which is why I just bought an EVGA 1000 G2 Supernova 1kW PSU many years ago. I don't even think about my PSU as a result. My backup PSU is an OCZ Z1000M which is also rated for 1kW.

I think it can be simpler: Select proven power supplies, look at the reviews. Leave a reserve of at least 150-200 watts. There are special calculators on the Internet for calculating consumption for your components. I’ll add on my own behalf - Never skimp on the power supply and motherboard, otherwise you risk losing the entire computer. Also install surge protectors with all protections or a voltage stabilizer in your outlet

The psu is one of if not THE most important part of any build. The hard part is knowing if it's a good psu despite the rating and wattage. Even reputable manufacturers make power supplies that are paramount to trash,wasting electricity and causing excess heat.

Another thing to check is if your PSU is compatible with the parts in your build with it cable connections etc. Also some reputable brands don't always hit it out of the park so yes seasonic is up there but their S12II psus have had issues.

TL;DR Unless you're an extreme enthusiast, A, B, and C tiers are interchangeable.
A lot of people get this wrong: the tiers are not the end-all be-all of a PSU's quality nor endurance. The tier lists look for a bunch of features that the vast majority of users will never even get close to needing. Hell, even a D-tier PSU will work for lower-end builds, and a C-tier is enough for your high-end 4080 build.
80+ rating means a lot. It is usually telling of the quality of the capacitors and the millisecond spikes of power draw it can handle…
Picking psu means to pick by watts of whole pc, not only graphics card. For example, you cpu could eat 120w on high performance. So I recommend to calculate total watt cost by any online calculator f.e. by "be quite"

PSU recommendations seem to be generally worst case scenario. Your power requirements are going to be a lot different if you have a 14900k and 10 case fans than they are if you have a Ryzen 5600 with 2 case fans, for example.

80 Plus is an EFFICIENCY rating, only has to do with AC to DC conversion losses.
And if you go over 1200W in the US, you really should have a 15 Amp rated circuit/wall plug.
If you wanna be safe just buy a pre built pc or if you wanna build it yourself you can order a kit. It will save a lot of time because you don’t have to double check all the pc parts and make sure they work with each other because the company should’ve already checked that themselves.

Another thing on the topic of power supplies, is to make sure that the one you choose has the appropriate number of outputs for your system components. I just purchased a be quiet pure power 12m 750 for my build & although I was happy with the product quality, it did not have enough pcie cables to support my MSI 6800 XT graphics card which requires three pcie cables.
