@@jaaad344 It is far more complicated that that.
Integrated circuits are solid state devices. That means no moving parts or in other words no wear and tear. These devices should be virtually timeless apart from one detail.
If you power the device on, a voltage will now be across its body. This voltage will create tiny internal forces which are internal stress. Turning the device off releases the stress.
Now cyclical powering and depowering means this stress will keep keep appearing and disappearing. Over time a crack will appear and that's when the device actually dies.
Keeping the device constantly powered on will stop this cycle.

There are a few errors in what you're saying.
    1. Uptime includes the time the system has been active and the time the system it spent in sleep or hibernation. (0:09)
    2. The computer still shuts down, even with Fast Startup on. Keeping Fast Startup disabled will slow down your startup time. (0:20)
    3. Not fully shutting down a computer will not kill its components over time, as modern computers are designed to handle regular shutdowns and restarts. (0:28)
In the 15 seconds you had left (since TH-cam Shorts only allows for 60 seconds, aka 1 minute), you could have explained better what uptime is, and be more accurate about all the rest.

    • @superspies32
      @superspies32 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

And also on his third statement, ACTUALLY let computer run continously extended its life rather than shutdown it. The only reason we do that on PC is because of the electric bill. But small, old PCs that many homelab uses as small servers for websites or VM servers run perfectly from days to days.

    • @winlogon.
      @winlogon. 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

@@superspies32 Your statement is generally true. Continuous operation can extend the life of a computer, especially for older or low-power machines used as servers in home labs. However, it can also generate more heat over time, which can damage components if proper cooling mechanisms are not in place.
In addition, running a computer 24/7 can increase energy costs, which can offset the potential benefits of extending the life of the device. Continuous use can cause components such as fans, hard drives and power supplies to wear out more quickly. This leads to reduced reliability and increased failure rates over time.
Rebooting a system regularly ensures that critical security patches and updates are applied promptly. This reduces vulnerabilities and maintains optimal performance. Some hardware failures are less likely to occur during periods of idle time. For example, memory corruption caused by prolonged operation.

No. That feature is automatically enabled within Windows for a reason. It saves you time every time you boot up your computer by having all your RAM contents stored in long-term storage, and has no negative implications for your computer. It is also why restarting your computer generally takes more time than shutting down and turning it back on, as a restart fully shuts down your computer.
Like others said, power-cycling your components often is technically more harmful than just keeping your computer on (it's like doing a workout once a month rather than every day) -- however, neither way of running your computer will magically make a component die within a week or even a year; you're perfectly fine keeping it on or off.

If you're clueless like this guy, PC components don't wear out with use over time, this is because they have no moving parts (with exceptions to the fans). The best analogy I've ever seen was "Computer parts are more like light bulbs, they're all designed for a specific wattage, voltage, and temperature, too much or too little of those and you're in trouble."
Edit: Also worth noting that some chips are rated for a specific amount of power cycles, primarily because the capacitors inside components (Motherboard, GPU, PSU, RAM, ETC.) are being charged and discharged, the capacitors aren't what wear out here, but the components in the path to the capacitors, which wear out faster.

@@kasperjensen1712 Correct, and it's arguably worse to turn it off and on constantly, as electronics age, they become less efficient and thus require more voltage to run (this is why your smartphone battery dies faster as it gets older). It's more likely to be noticeable when powering on a component that's seen heavy use but has recently been powered down, in an old component, the effect becomes greater and greater with every power cycle. So yeah it's better to leave it on or at least in sleep mode.
TL:DR: Electronics become inefficient with time, better to leave older parts on or in sleep mode.

The part about fast startup is actually true. Rest is bullshit.
Having your PC running nonstop cannot kill your components overtime. Computers aren't mechanical engines. They degrade, yes, but not with usage. Dust and most importantly heat kills PC components. Properly cooled and regularly cleaned PC can run 24/7 no problem.
Systems get cluttered and slowed down overtime. The longer the system runs without complete shut down, the slower it gets. But it will take months before you notice anything. If you keep your OS up to date, which you absolutely should, there will be updates that require restart. At least one every month. Just don't postpone those and you'll be fine.
Don't shut down your PC with a power button like some sort of psychopat. Do it from Windows Start menu like a normal person. This was actually the most risky thing he did in the video. Yes, now days using power button usually works just fine, but the chances of something going wrong are never zero. Using the Start menu they are always zero.
Overall I would still suggest turning fast startup off. With todays fast SSDs the benefits of fast startup function are miniscule. And the disadvantages prevails.

Edit: it cannot kill your components (your components always die over time but super slow you cant notice)
Edit 2: your power button makes your computer sleep if it instantly turns off the lights. this is more problematic than fast startup. just use windows to turn your computer off.

    1. Computers aren't harmed by being on for too long. They don't need to sleep to stay healthy.
    2. A computer in hibernation (which is what "Fast startup" uses) is _off._ It's not using any power beyond regular standby power usage in a "true off" state, and you can even cut power to it completely, and still have it come out of hibernation just fine.
And yes, ACPI technically allows the S4 state to consume some additional standby power beyond "true off", but no computer has ever implemented hibernation that way. S4 only differs from S5 in what's written to the disk - you can even build 2 identical computers, boot both, shut one down, hibernate the other, then swap the disks to see the one you originally shut down... come out of hibernation instead!

@@godw1ll99 when you can say me how a hdd does cache data into ram when there are 2 or more sources then i could think about this.
      solution:
the hdd drive has a pre-located point thats given for data, that are lines. like a vinyl record.
the mechanism automaticaly changes the head reading position by lets say 1 nanometer (by a 1 tb hdd i have) i dont know that exactly.
when more files get accessed, the pc exactly pre-plans how the head should move and makes a sine wave to where the head moves.
the sine could be accessed in the c64, as the floppy disc head position assistaint (full name no shit) in newer versions ya cant get this feature because the sine is so fast that the screen hz dont make it
(tip: you have 500 fps screen? hmmm, your pc does still render 45 fps per second, and THE SCREEN makes a soft movement. otherwise you can see that by using a crt television at a nvidia gforce rtx 4060 Ti, then you can see the effect.)
the sine of the head will now jump quickly to these points,
and it also when it is nececary also partialy reads some system info while gliding by making the head a bit slower to catch at least 1 byte (1 byte=8 bits. so its a 4-4 saturation process by getting that)
the caching into ram is by busses simply get the data to upload it and then it will slowly corrupt. when a hdd reads something wrong, z.B. an impossible position in one of the ram or the pc components that may cause a fatal damage uses to make a bsod. in win95 the processes were held and the cpu frozen by a bsod so may the pc continue at risk.
ok im too lazy to explain this further. but in linux opensuse KDE, i own a realy old pc, with the scoll 3-50 disc 40 1991 edition you get a simple tool to run in this that can render the hdd and the ram as a bitmap image scrolling to left and right. for the local cpu and hdd and memory etc theres a big image with nombers with background numbers.
so, please explain me: the youtube servers (ironicaly running on windows 2001 server family, it seems the system still does the job) are running now a lot of time up. the memory isnt cleaned in any way, um, ...
im stuck in the first 20 % of the video paused. look at the background processes. theres a bitcoin miner. its this with the "0%", where the 0 is out of location order. i think that guy knows exactly that about compunters as apple users saying their system is great for its low price when you tell them to type android in combination with copyright in google and they see its copyleft (free to copy and free no price 4 ever) and they sudenly realize that samsung must have the double amount of speed by the price of a iphone... just my coworker realized that... that look was so funny
whatever: memory cache gets a reset on every bus every cpu tick on every numeral bus. so data is transfered ...
oh i just realized that i missunderstood that message. now im too cool to delete all of my lyrics >:)

    @ebhaenger8246 ปีที่แล้ว +220

Ok, there is quite something to unpack here.
    1. System options
No, this option does not change if you system is shut down or going to sleep.
NO! there options don't damage you computer.
In worst case it uses up some of your write cycles "reducing lifespan" of your SSD(though by not much), if not setup for HDD
    2. The Power button.
Sleep is the default power button action for laptops. Shut down is the default power button action for desktop PCs. (You can change that to you pref.)
So on desktop if you press(not holding) the button that's the same as if you choose shut down from the menu in your bottom left corner.
    3. Uptime in task manager.
PC's have several features to reduce loading times on boot. To name two Windows options:
Fast Startup and Hibernation - are similar but serve different purposes.
Hibernation saves an image on your Hard drive and shuts down your computer, while Fast Startup saves an image of only the system kernel and loaded drivers to reduce boot time.
    or in other words.
With these options ,Windows is Saving your current state (that is active in RAM) to your hard drive.
So uptime only resets, when everything/most files get reinitialized = use restart from you options menu
(that's why a 'restart' fixes more problems then 'shut down and starting again'; i.e that's why Tech support always ask first to restart the PC/ device)
I think a good analogy would be:
Imagine your playing a game and know you can't play it for the next 3 weeks.
    now you can ether
    - Start a new Game
    - just return after 3 weeks to the game and try to remember what you have done last time.
    or
    - write down what you have done in bullet points: who have i talked to, what am i doing, what are the next steps i want to do, what are my best items and so on.

Computer components are designed to be used. There is reason why you'd disable it, but not to save your components. Putting the computer in a hibernation state (fast startup) means that your RAM gets dumped to the hard disk, so your computer will boot off of that. The computer does actually turn off, but when it turns back on, it loads that memory dump, making your boot faster. I have it off because I like to have fresh reboots, especially when I often tinker with my computer.

    • @FlabbyTabby

It also causes other problems........Windows neglects to write changed files back to the partition when Fast Startup is enabled and a shut down occurs. So if you try to access the partition from other OS there's a risk of losing data (for example Linux will warn you that the partition has unwritten changes).
It also seems to cause problems with Intel WiFi for some reason, seems to write persistent data that then prevents it from working properly with other Windows installations and also Linux.

It does not keep your computer running completely, only saving some files' states. He did not save your PC, he simply made it boot slower. All that changed. The only thing that kills hardware is turning it off and on again. Due to heat and microstress basically bending parts a tiny amount until they break. If you never turned off your PC, heat would stay roughly the same and the tiny forces applied by the voltage would be constant, ie it's unlikely for the PC to ever die. In 99% of cases when a system dies, it does so between turning it off and on again.
TL;DR: Your PC has less issue running for over a decade straight than it has being turned off and on again thousands of times, and this short does nothing to improve the longevity of your components.

Computers are designed and much more comfortable with being left on 24/7 (providing that their airflow is not blocked with debris) Switching your PC off and on like this causes more wear to the drives of your PC and other components such are capacitors being charged up and discharged. I've had my PC running non stop since 2019, not had a single component failure and my drives health are all above 97%

    • @salami3381

Those few components being mostly high voltage capacitors on things like the PSU which is why they're 'Always on'. Repeated discharge and recharge cycles can lead to bulging and eventual failure. Silicon is basically being atomised in chips these days due to their process node, they are effectively dying the moment you apply voltage little by little. Same is true for older chips but it just takes longer. There's so many safeties these days anyway because of fire regs etc that as long as you're buying proper components that are engineered and you've cooled everything correctly (Not just the chips) then the life expectancy is overall longer than it's ever been with less waste heat. It shouldn't matter if you leave it on or off. Just make sure you restart that OS for security and that's literally it

TBH, we probably shouldn't be accepting either point of view as facts in our worldview without further research. The fact that so many commentators are calling this guy out suggests that he's probably wrong, so I'm definitely leaning that way, but I think it's probably smart to find more experts weighing in on this first or even looking for studies before stating it as fact one way or the other.
