    This is my review of the Leatt Fusion 3.0 Vest and Neck Brace. I paid $399 for this from Rocky Mountain ATV/MC last year. It’s been a good brace, but somehow I broke it. I think it happened in my riding bag since I didn’t have a crash bad enough to do this. It’s the first neck brace that I have used, so keep that in mind when watching. One of my riding buddies, Tyler, swears by these things and wears it every time he goes out. It takes some time to get used to it, as you’ll see when you get one, but I imagine that is the same for any neck brace.
    From www.leatt.com/shop/fusion-3-0...
    All-in-One Neck, Chest, Back, Flank and Shoulder Protection
    The Fusion is a unique invention that combines neck, chest, back, flank and shoulder protection in one piece of body armor. CE tested and certified as both Personal Protective Equipment and impact protection, the Fusion offers one-of-a-kind protection.
    The 3D design is easy to adjust and offers the perfect fit that is very comfortable. Made of both hard shell material and 3DF AirFit soft ventilated impact foam, it fits around your body comfortably but the impact foam absorbs energy to dampen those hard knocks.

    Took a header in moab in 2013. Landed directly on the crown of my helmet with the full weight of my bike between my legs. The impact compressed my neck untill my helmet was stopped by my leatt neck brace. It was the stand alone model. The force of the impact was distributed to my shoulders, ribs & heavier structure of my spine. Was I sore the next day in the ribs & back.... Yes.. Did the neck brace keep me from breaking my neck.. From my experience, YES!!!

    I bought the same 1 about a year ago and I really like it a lot. My only complaint is it's a little hot in the summer but overall I feel like that's minor compared to the protection it provides. As far as those worried about a collar bone injury my thoughts are an injured collar bone is better than a broken neck.. I would recommend this product to my friends and family. Thanks Kyle I like the product reviews. 👍

    I had the same problems (head movement restriction) on the first ride with this. It comes with another longer piece that you can replace on the side of the neck brace. I changed it out and now it's perfect!!

    Following your reviews for quite some time, and your honest approach is well appreciated in all of your videos. Searched for the magic way of wearing the neck brace and keep the forward view, is definitely a pain! Increasing safety there is usual a "downside" in confort, per say, even crossed my mind to grind the brace itself to gain a few degrees extra! So far from what I've read there are tiny custom changes as to a thinner padding (e.g. Leatt DBX for bike downhill) to gain few mm extra. Nevertheless, is a great product and changes can deviate from its original purpose, so each one should be responsible and find what it suits best.

    My thoughts. If I had been wearing a neck brace, I might not have broken my back with three compression fractures AS badly as I did, if at all. The only things that absorbed my direct impact was my helmet and my spine. I won't ride without a neck brace anymore.

    I have the earlier model Leatt GPX, i only really notice it when I first put it on but in tight woods on steep downhill it is hard to look up. But I only really notice it for the first couple minutes of riding. Then its all normal. I had a Fox chest protector with it but it was too tight. I bought a Troy Lee Designs and really like it with the brace. It allows you to remove some panels for the brace.I would recommend the TLD chest protector with or without the brace.

    I bought one of these about 1 1/2 years ago after a slow crash into a tree and hearing a snapping sound. Since then I've washed out in a single track turn and landed with my chin (helmet) resting on a short tree stump and I've gone off the trail landing hard with my back against several small trees and my neck/ head whipped back... Both times could've been severe injuries but I had no pain to speak of. I did notice a month later that there was a spot on one of my shoulder bones (not muscle) that was sore (hairline fracture?). I've gotten used to the limited neck movement while wearing the brace. I also store my brace all put together in a mesh laundry bag upside down and put my Mobius knee braces inside it. I just looked at my brace and it is broke in the same spot but I can definitely think of how it happened. Leatt doesn't sell that replacement part. I may try to repair or write to Leatt for support as this seems to be a common occurrence. Will buy again (with gritted teeth) if I can't fix current one.

    I wear a leatt neck brace. It’s a lot more substantial than this brace attached to the chest piece. It’s saved my neck several times. If you have enough money to ride you have enough to get a neck brace. Don’t be stupid with your protection.

    I was off a bike for 18 years and first day back on I took a digger off a small table top. I landed shoulder and head into the ground and next chance I got I ordered a chest protector WITH shoulder pads. Next time I rode I wrecked again, shoulder and head into the dirt, but this time I had some shoulder and elbow pads and that was fine, I bruised my quad really bad though, I owned (Leatt X-Frame, which kind of suck quality wise) knee braces but wasn't wearing them and they wouldn't have helped my quad, but I did bang my other knee but not badly but they would have helped there. The next time I rode I looped out wide open 3rd gear on my 450sxf and bruised my tailbone (8 weeks later it still hurts), was wearing knee braces but still sprained my knee by twisting it I think and I did hurt my shoulder as well and I was wearing my Fly Barricade Body Armor, but the shoulder pads are small and I still managed to scrape up the back of my shoulder. I replaced my body armor with a Fox Titan Sport which is great and zip tied in some knee pad inserts designed for motorcycle riding pands into the rear of them so that I had adequate tailbone protection. Now I'm considering a neck brace and to replace my knee braces with ones that tie into the boot to help prevent twisting injuries

    Due to a rugby incident, I had 4 discs replaced between C3 to C7 vertibrae and C7C8 fused plus a titanium cage encompassing all of these vertibrae. My chiropractor said he didnt think it was worth while me wearing one of these neck braces because I already have slightly less head movement and it's not as though I can damage my neck with all the hardware I have installed.

    I can see these being useful on the MX track or if you're riding the wide open desert. However, my issue with tight woods is low hanging trees where you have to duck your head under a downed tree or branch for example. I had one 10 years ago and that was the issue that prevented me from using it on rides.

    I wear the Leatt 6.5 low profile neck brace and the 5.5 body armor. Mobility is much better than the older models which I started with. I also use elbow guards. I'm enduro racing and generally don't want to carry any more weight than I absolutely have to, but I won't ride without this protection. I actually started wearing the neck brace when I had a pinched nerve in my neck and it helped to keep my head from bending too far into the nerve. Oh, and I wear the jersey over the armor.

    The Leatt neck braces are designed to break under large forces so that they don't break your collar bone or pop your back. I'd guess the first get off that you had where you cracked the lip of the neck brace was the one where you weakened or cracked the broken part, and then as you say, maybe it finally snapped from whatever. Could be worth regularly checking these for damage, especially after a wipe out.
    My son has the youth version of this, and he loves it. He finds it super comfy, and wears it every time without fail, summer or winter, as it gives him the confidence to go hard. Like you, he didn't like the shoulder pads, so took them off.

    You would think for the expense of these things they would be a lot more durable, I have been through a number of chest protectors and everyone of the broke. None of which was due to a serious crash. I have set of shoulder pads I raced with by in the 70’s that are still in good shape. I now ride with body armor that I much prefer. It covers my chest, back, shoulders and forearms. Plus a kidney belt. I leave my neck brace for racing. I love the idea of the combo but I would expect a much better service, than what you have experienced out of any protective gear. What would you think of a helmet that broke and you didn’t know how? Why would I put up with anything that mysteriously broke?

    Thanks for the review. Interesting thought on required mobility for off-road (keeping eyes on target) and limits of protection. If possible, I'd like a spin on your comment about "sometimes it's a bit hot." Here in Central Texas, there is no chance of a day under 90 for the next three months, and low-hundreds are in the regular forecast with frequency. What is the best strategy for off-road protection (including thermal protection) in super-high-heat environments? Will vented gear actually get me hotter? Should I be wearing wet/evaporative gear to cool that you would recommend? Is there an armor option that is better for super high heat?

    • @64bruceb
      @64bruceb 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good luck. I ride in Florida so it's hot and humid most of the year. I always wear some kind of chest/back protector and they are all hot. And yes, vented gear is hotter than no gear. Drink lots of water and be vigilant for the signs of overheating. Stop and rest frequently if you need to. I've found taking salt tabs or some of the electrolyte tabs you can get help a lot with staying hydrated too.

    The funny thing is is that the two things that you said were negative about it or what it’s designed to doIt’s designed to keep you from overextending most of the crashes for motocross and cross country is when the helmet comes crashing down and your head comes forward and breaks your collarbone you can take a hit to the shoulder and it’s not always going to break your collarbone but the majority of collar bones are broken by the helmet coming forward the head coming forward and crushing the collarbone

I use the german ONB Ortema with a separat chest protector and a separat back protector from the same company. It works very well and it's possible to wear the NB over the jersey.

  • @64bruceb

    I've tried a bunch of different neck braces and could never find one that worked for me. I think a lot of it has to do with the shape of your helmet. I could never get one and adjust it so I could lift my head as high as I thought I needed to. If you can't look far enough ahead, your inviting the crash. The further ahead you can look the better/safer you will ride. And, I'm unwilling to start trying a bunch of neck braces and very expensive helmets in the hope I find a combination that works magic.
    I know a number of people who ride with them and that's great for them. But I can't find one what works for me and I'm still not sold that they offer any real protection.

      I had the same issue with my $100 EVS neck brace I bought. I almost gave it away. I even took it off one day a few minutes into a ride and hide behind a bush until I got back. Going down hills/banks I couldn’t get my head back far enough. I ended up completely removing the adjustment pin in the back and now it works perfect. I don’t know I’m wearing it. I may have compromised some of the safety because my helmet can move back more I don’t think I have. Regardless its still better than not wearing one. I wear it with the soft leatt 3df body armor and a riding vest. I can also wear it on top of my Klim jacket.

    I've had two proper accidents whilst wearing my neck brace. Both times the brace stopped my neck from hyper extending. Won't ride without one. As for the collar bone breaking story, that is hearsay. There are cut outs to clear your collarbone, the only way it will put pressure on your collar bone is if it isn't setup and fitted correctly. The majority of people I see wearing them do not have them setup and fitted correctly. In that case I'm pretty sure they'll do more harm than good in a crash

    • @rioschad3284
      @rioschad3284 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I beg to differ, I've been in two accidents in the past year while riding motocross resulting in breaking both clavicles, among other bones. I firmly believe it contributed to breaking my collarbones. Did it prevent a neck injury? Who knows. The energy from an impact has to be dissipated somewhere and my leatt model rests over my collarbones. I truly think it comes down to how you hit the ground. I have plates and screws in one clavicle that I don't think would have happened if I wasnt wearing the brace. That's my .02

    • @SoilworkZA01
      @SoilworkZA01 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rio Schad was yours fitted 100% correctly? I disagree that they cause broken collar bones 100%. Mine rests on my chest and is nowhere near my collar bones. Also don’t believe that knee braces break legs. But each to their own. Ride with what works for you

    Not seeing these on top riders euro hard enduro.
    Over a pound up high for a neck brace.
    I do use the Leatt pressure suit and like their stuff, but at some point enough is enough with safety gear or we will be unable to move.
    I choose to dial it back these days. Like downhill skiing thru the trees, things can go wrong quickly when near the edge of our skill set.
    Not! being critical of those who wear one - just to be clear.

      I had an early Leatt & a later 1, switched to an Atlas, like it much better. I can still fell it offroad when riding down a steep downhill, say down into a gully, when trying to look ahead at the uphill on the other side. but I won't ride without it. I have broken a collarbone twice, and can vouch that it's no fun, but I'll take that over a spinal cord injury any day.

    Knew you were gun enthusiast Kyle! A good chest protector is a must in IMO especially if you ride woods. Plenty of wooden daggers sticking out of trees and logs.However I'm not sold on neck braces or probably even knee braces. Anytime your hindering natural body movement seems more dangerous to me and restricting your ability to react in a fall ...that and just not enough evidence they work.

    • @nestserau
      @nestserau 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, car belts also restrict the natural movement. I rather restrict it than meet the steering wheel with my chest. As to reacting in a fall... Sometimes you lie on the ground earlier than you know what's happened.

    A collar bone break associated with wearing these should not surprise you. The force from the impact has to co somewhere. Rather than being transferred into your spine, it is transferred into the shoulders, back, or chest. If the body positioning is right (wrong) then it can all be transferred into one collar bone. A collar bone is easier to fix than your spine.

    Kyle anyone who rationalizes about this kind of gear (incl knee braces) is stealing from themselves. As an adventure bike & dirtbike rider AND as a paramedic working at enduros, downhill MTB & adv bike events, you'll never really know of the forensics, dynamics & forces when you come off your bike until you get up, dust off and ride on again - thanks to your safety gear. Or, you don't - due to the absence of or, substandard safety gear. The discomfort of a neckbrace is something to adapt to given the benefits. The hogwash of neck braces breaking collar bones....if the forces were that great, imagine the damage to your neck & shoulders if you didn't have one on. A properly designed brace should have a gap for your clavicle. The testimonials are streaming in daily from people who can attest to the benefit of this gear. As a self-employed person, I swear by this kit and see it as an investment, not an expense. The alternative of being injured to save money or restricted riding freedom is not an option for me. You can't control everything when you fall, but you'll be remiss if you don't control that which you can.

    • @blainew1035

      Love your response, however, for many to most people who don't like to ride with them, they struggle with being able to see forward, and in return make it more inviting for a crash instead of avoiding one in the first place. The reduced ability to be able to see ahead on the trail or track can also make it more dangerous when riding. No one right answer. There's also some people who claim they're just plain dangerous to wear from the dynamics of the fall/ impact properties. I think many educated people do not believe in the hype behind them. I'm really on the fence with them. I do think gear is invaluable but I also know how greedy these companies and stores are when it comes to selling and making money. There is no real research, trials, and evidence behind them.

    • @seanfrench1029
      @seanfrench1029 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Blaine Woodcock - as I said I'm a healthcare professional with a keen interest in several medical fields & understand how research works. There's no way of doing proper randomised controlled trials with this stuff, even more so cause it's humans. No two crashes are identical. As operational paramedic for 20 yrs and as biker, rationalising safety gear is dumb. Does a seat belt save your life in a plane crash? Unlikely. However, all recorded plane crash survivors had their belts on. The steadily accumulating crash feedback on braces is mounting - surpassing anecdotal status. The brace research brings about better materials, lighter, less unintentional injuries and, less & less restrictive. Wrt restrictions, it's subjective and, can be adapted to over time. I've extricated car accident victims who didn't wear seat belts because "it's restrictive & uncomfortable." Yes, Leatt has become a very successful company but I can assure you, if you've met the founder, he's a very humble guy and, doesn't need more money. He's out to make biking safer. In closing, I've rescued many spinal injury patients. If the intensic risks of my activity can be alleviated by a neck brace, it's a bargain. And, if the designer is a millionaire thanks to it - good for him. With proper selection & fit, an informed decision can be made to maximise safety, minimise/eliminate injury whilst optimising enjoyment.

      I'm not disagreeing with anything you say. I provide patient care as well, not emergency like yourself, but I too am always concerned about my own but as well as other rider's well being. As for us who do provide healthcare, we love data, and we love research. I do think there are ways out there to account for the data behind motorcycle, dirtbike related in particular, accidents in order to find if you're better off than not when it comes to wearing particular items of gear (Controversial as Neck Braces)...Or at least there should be. Everything you're saying is 100% correct though. And thanks for sharing your piece about meeting him. Leatt does a great job making excellent pieces of gear. I had one of their first neck braces and I rode with it for as long as I could before I realized it was taking away from the experience and enjoyment of riding. Perhaps I could try again with a newer product.

    • @seanfrench1029
      @seanfrench1029 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Blaine Woodcock I also started out with a first generation Leatt neck brace and found my Sena 20S helmet comms caught on the neck brace if my back pack's straps slipped off the brace's lugs to keep it down, impeding me of my 'fighter pilot' head rotation, especially when going fast on technical terrain with my 990. I didn't wanna lose the brace (paranoid paramedic) nor the comms for adventure bike riding or when sweeping as medic for expeditions, so I re-positioned the comms unit higher up on helmet. My wife then 'inherited' my older brace and got a next generation. With my enduro helmet I have hardly any noticeable contact with my brace if properly secured with my hydration pack's shoulder straps & chest clip. The latest iterations of Leatt braces are even slimmer & lower (at a price). Thanks for chat & safe riding.

      Absolutely, thank you for what you do for the riding community. You sound extremely involved. You have certainly made me more interested in making riding a safer hobby, for not only myself, but for others as well. I'd really like to embark on some research of my own if I could find a way.

    Why so many dirt bike riders dont wear elbows protections?? I found it very stupid, a simple fall can hurt your elbow so badly but seems that pro riders and a lot of amateurs riders dont give a s... about this

    • @nestserau

      It gives you armpump in no time on the track. So you're not safe anymore anyhow. I rather be in full control without elbow guards than let the motorcycle ride me with elbow guards.

  • @colechad2
    @colechad2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why would you not use a neck brace? Restricted neck motion, have to wear outside of jersey, blah, blah, blah. This is the cost of playing in the dirt and you can learn to compensate. Whatever cost you want to put on this item ($400) it is worth every penny. As a neurosurgeon who also dirt bikes, this item or similar item will obviously not negate a cervical spine injury, but will potentially decrease the risk for a extension-distraction or flexion compression injury of the cervical spine that result in spinal cord injury. I have seen far too many of such injuries in my career. Many argue that the force simply translates into the upper thoracic spine (collar bone and ribs in your terms) and may cause injury to the thoracic spine cord. Take it from me, there is more independence to life as a paraplegic versus that of a quadriplegic.

    Our leatt fusion cracked apart like our astar boots without ever falling. The material is hit and mis with qc or just lack of. Cheap materials get brittle and crumbles apart before it should.
    Companies blame the consumer usage for their products inferior material failure.
    Climate control storage for these brands I believe is required, because we barely get to use the stuff as it sits in the shed most of the year in around 70 degrees, but can go as low as 15 to as high as 95 degrees with all ranges of humidit. Materials would probably do better in a 70 degree low humidity atmosphere year round, or maybe just use better materials for the overpriced safety gear.
