Great interpretation about moral relativism. Each character had his or her reasons for their choices and felt he or she was in the right. Ultimately though, they essentially were all corrupt, (minus Emily Blunt) knew it, and even EMBRACED it which was really interesting to see. This movie also kind of reminded me of No Country for Old Men.

Some critics have bashed on Emily Blunt not acting like a tough cop throughout the movie, and more of a women in peril. I personally commend her for the range of acting skills she used for this role.

I think those critics missed the point of her character with what Leon said in this video. Her character is meant to show to us how the complexities of the world give us a lot of moral ambiguity and how complicated the world is. Like you, I thought Emily Blunt did a great job in this film. She understood the material.

Emily Blunt shouldn't be criticized at all, she's a fantastic actor and does well with her material. She's also well directed, much to Villeneuve's credit. Now, her character's writing...

blahblahmanist this is a similar character to the female FBI agent in Wind River, another movie by the screen writer. Seems to show a realistic strong female character; will, longevity, pain endurance.

Her acting was perfect. If it was poor the movie wouldn’t work.

More on cycle of violence message is the placement and use of water cooler bottles and the suggested use of waterboarding.
There is an empty bottle and rags subtly placed at the end of a hall in the opening action, Alejandro carries a bottle into Guillermo’s interrogation room and finally Fausto Alarcon explains to Alejandro ‘where do you think we learned it from?’ referring to the violence he perpetrates on others. If you add Matt Graver's statement 'to dramatically overreact' it all highlights the cyclical nature of the war on drugs.

    1. Kate is not wearing white at the end. She is wearing the same gray T-shirt.
    2. The black SUVs are not doing anything illegal. Their mission has been approved by the American govt, as well as Mexico's govt as they are given an escort.
    3. Alejandro takes off his beige blazer for the mission because blue symbolized a legal mission where he doesnt have to do anything gray. We dont see him again with the beige blazer until his is about to torture Guillermo.

Some things are probably incidental, the black cars are potentially standard issue and the American flag in the office of Government officials is a visual cue to symbolise authority, but damn! A lot of that made a lot of sense... great video!

Appreciate insightful analysis !! I've never thought of the usage of the color in this film the way you perceived. Dennis is such a literalic film maker, but it sometimes makes his effort too darn hard to crack at (笑´・艸・) In the same sense, I really love the effort done in "Collateral". Tom Cruise, wearing shiny gray suit that implying a killer shark which looks for the target in the blueish city of sea. No explanation was needed & worked so well. Can't wait for the next episode! Take care of yourself.

I like but dislike this film. Its a very interesting and intriguing look into moral ambiguity and generally the awful things that happening and are happening in this world. But at the same time I felt like I was kind of cheated, like I finally get to see movie on this subject matter from a female perspective but it ends up becoming del Toro's character's revenge story, It's beautiful shot, amazingly acted, and intriguing but it kind of fell flat at the end and again frustrated me, just a little bit.
