Just baffling how the Oscar seem to think this was not worthy of a nomination for best cinematography!!!
The Elevator Scene must be one of my favorite scenes in cinema.
For me its a perfect representation of the duality of human nature. And the way the light dims and the background noises dissolve in silence, to accomplish this sudden change of mood, amazing.
I felt like stepping inside a dream, when i saw this scene the first time on the big screen.

The elevator is beautiful but one thing no one asks is that if henchman was about to attack them, then why wait until the kiss is over ?
Also when he is kissing Irene the scorpion on his back represents his violent dark side and so when Irene pulls him so the scorpion is no longer in shot this symbolizes that she brings out the good in him.
Drive is one of my favorites and I only like it more after watching this.
"Sedatephobia" - that's an awesome way to describe so many movies. Loading up a movie with loud sound effects and pop songs/orchestrated bombast is a clue that the film-makers lack confidence in their fundamental skills. It really does come off as a fear of silence, fear of getting feedback that the film was "boring".
Wait, I thought the canonical explanation was that the driver is BOTH the altruistic frog (when he carries the scorpion on his back represented by the Jacket on his back, but is also less figuratively by all the recedivist criminals he carries literally behind him in his car) and the scorpion (he also himself sting the people emotionally carrying him, dooming everyone)
The violence he inflicts is him crossing the river to support those he "carries", not him stinging or being stung. In the elevator, he is *carrying* the scorpion. When he is executed purely for technical reasons [there are no benefits to kill him at this point, it only happens because it "has" to happen], that is when the frog is stung and the scorpion dies by its own fault.

On that note, I just have to say that in Drive, Oscar Isaac gave the most convincing "I'm dead" flop of all time. ;-/

I love the contrasts you provided by putting music into the silent scenes, because it wonderfully illustrates how intrusive sound can be over visuals and acting, which is something I think is super cool about how the editing for this film stripped out more and more dialogue to prevent that sort of incursion.
This is one my favorite movies, and I've seen a bunch of video essays on it, but I really appreciate this one. Good stuff.

Fantastic re-edit of the "characters getting to know each other" scene--very effective. May I respectfully suggest doing this often in future analyses; done well and regularly and in a particular way could make an attractive feature of Renegade Cut.

Everything about the car for the heist was about blending in. Most common car w/ most common color probably being silver. But this one has a secret. It’s suped-up engine. So w/ that in mind it’s more or a wolf in sheep’s clothing, which perfectly reflects the driver. I also don’t understand the parallels people draw with the driver being a hero towards the end of the film on his rampage. I feel it draws more similarities to horror films. The driver walks slowly to the pizza joint and observes his soon to be victims through the glass, stalking them but no one notices the weirdo in a rubber mask just outside. I almost wanted to yell “people are you bind!” It’s almost like he’s savoring the moment and has fully embraced his monster. These characteristics continue on the road. He is a shark and the road are his waters. He toys with them as he bumps the car and loose control. They sit there, he gives them that moment of wonder, confusion and then terror as he shines them with his head lights and knocks them off the cliff. And when Nino crawls out onto the beach the driver is there standing over him and has no where to run. The Driver is the Monster but he’s a Monster who has given himself a purpose. And he wanted to have fun with it it seems... OMG I just realized the driver is a Street Shark.

i like to think the colour of his jacket and car being silver is his costume and it is silver to represent a weapon and the street lights. the street lights are like his natural nocturnal home and he literally drives and feeds his predatory within it. Also sharks are grey/silver at times and they are at nature seen as a bad animal.
I think the silver could also represent a knight's armor. He *wants* to be a knight in shining armor, but he's got that scorpion on his back. And when I think of it that way, I realize he's as much the frog as he is the scorpion - but his scorpion side could bring them both down.
@@Karin_Allen Here's my take on the jacket etc.. goes along a bit with yours: The jacket(scorpion) was a literal and metaphorical symbol representing the core struggle and theme of the movie. Is he the frog? Is he the scorpion? Is he both? Is his struggle his attempt to become neither? both the scorpion and the frog represent characters complicit with crime. Regardless of how innocent the frog feels he is or how harmless the crime the scorpion feels he is performing; it is that they are both characters choosing to exist in the world of crime i.e. the river which "drowns" its victims if you don't avoid it all together.
If you want to go further into the jackets meaning. The jacket was shiny (knight/hero in shining armor) and white representing purity. Covering himself in a cloak of attempted purity even though the white of the jacket could be seen as the frog portion of the fable. No matter how much he tries to justify his actions he is still complicit with all the criminals he interacts with. The white of the jacket is also lined on all sides with brown material. Representing a rough around the edges approach to things. He is imperfect no matter how badly he wishes for a better life. The white jacket also becomes more and more dirty throughout the movie becoming covered in the literal effects of his criminal life. Dirt and blood. Friend and foe. Same as the brown gloves.
He also had shown that he did not fear retribution in assisting with these crimes as he did not wear a mask to hide his identity even when the other criminals did. You could see this as him just not caring or that he never felt that his involvement justified wearing a mask because again "he's just a frog". He really didn't seem to care about much of anything prior to meeting Irene. He was a drifter and a criminal. He did however wish to wear a mask to potentially hide his identity when going to to kill Nino.
Also: on him walking up to the glass door at the pizzeria. Another thing I never hear mentioned is the fact that from the parking lot you really can't see inside too well. He may have been walking up there to kill them in the restaurant which is why he walked so close to the door to look inside the whole restaurant.
There is also the fact that he more than likely drowned Nino in the ocean (river) just like the scorpion to the frog. Up until that point Nino was the most "scorpion" of the characters. Nino wanted everybody killed because it was in his nature. Bernie even tells Nino that Nino got them all into a big mess and they agree that it could have been avoided but it's in Ninos nature to escalate things. It was also nino that started this whole thing off thinking that he could get away with stealing $1 million from the other family
Also during the beach/nino scene with the assumption that the driver is the frog and nino being the criminal scorpion. With this we can also see a contrarian viewpoint that the frog can also chose to drown the scorpion before the scorpion has a chance to sting the frog. Then the frog has the chance to swim away and even get out of the river. At the end of the day all the criminals (driver included) are sharks and it's not just simply different shades of complicit gray in the crime world. All the criminals in the movie commit horrific acts and therefore can be seen as sharks. All looking for there own piece/bite of the pie in whichever way they see fit. Whether it's money or the girl they all kill to keep whats theirs.

I don't know whether this is true, but I've read that Nicolas Winding Refn always includes a person on the autism spectrum in his movies - and in Drive, it's supposedly the Driver. Since I'm on the spectrum myself, I'm always interested in seeing people like me on the screen, and I've studied Gosling's performance closely to see if he's playing a man on the spectrum.
Now, no two Aspies or auties or whatever you want to call us are alike, and I share almost no traits at all with Driver - but I do see a lot of the better known Aspie traits in him, including his lack of facial expression, his trouble interacting with people even when he likes them - and my favorite: his offering Benecio a toothpick to chew on when he sees the kid looking at *his* toothpick.
If Driver *is* an Aspie - an open question - that might be reflected in the kind-vs-violent aspects of his personality. Now, to anyone reading this: please don't think Aspies are typically criminals, sociopaths, or murderers. But some of us do have trouble finding the *finer* lines between right and wrong. We learn as kids not to steal or kill, but someone like Driver might question whether it's really stealing if you only drive the robbers from the scene. Someone like Driver might also question whether it's okay to kill someone to protect someone else - and if it is, how violently you can kill them before you look like a psychopath. (BTW, I think Driver himself knew he went too far in the elevator, but he's had some kind of brutal past that we know nothing about, and he carries much more rage than the typical Aspie).
Yes, a lot of Aspies do carry rage. As both children and adults, we get bullied for being "weird," friends drift away from us, and we're constantly being chewed out for doing things wrong when we thought we were being perfectly appropriate. But I've got plenty of rage issues myself, and I don't think I've ever thrown a punch in my life. Driver is *not* the poster child for Aspie rage issues. Still, if you decide he *is* an Aspie, it's possible to see his ultra-violence as a mental health issue rather a trait *of* his autism. It could have developed from the unspecified brutality in his past.

The thing is too, our reality doesn’t have music in the background, maybe when you walk into a store or a bar, but otherwise life isn’t filled with nondiagetic sound, which adds to ground the surrealism in this movie.

The robbery scene always reminds me of the shootout in The Public Enemy, though the director of that film depicted the scene that way as a means of depriving the audience of what must have been the most exhilarating moment.

Just blind bought it today and I did enjoyed it and watched your vid on this film to get more interpretation on why people praise this film as I mostly see people recommend it to those who have seen The Guest an homage spoof film of 70's-80's action and slasher films and from what I hear is that Drive is an 80's action film done abstractly and I can see how it's that. Plus I got interested in it due to I getting into 80's homage films like The Guest, It Follows and 80's like synth music of Perturbator and writing a multi-genre dark fantasy/horror story in the since of Hunchback of Notre Dame and Phantom of the Opera with a 80's-90's like setting and atmosphere. Do you recommend the "follow up' film Only God Forgives?
If you like Drive then have a look at Walter Hill`s The Driver and also Thief by Michael Mann.

About the silver gateway car, silver is not a color it reflects light, if there is dark silver becomes dark if there is light silver becomes light, maybe the choice of a silver car is about what you said before, the driver becoming his environment.
two songs really stand out to me in this film one a real hero which you mentioned as his theme song but I'd like to think that he has two theme songs and that one is him in the day time. And the other is night call (at night) in the song its says there's something inside you its hard to explain. and throughout the movie he is hiding that he is the scorpion up until that elevator scene where he has no choice and has to reveal himself for what he truly is the scorpion. idk just a thought what do you think?

Didn’t anyone watch the movie with an overlay of different sounds and music done by, i think, some BBC type Djs. They thought they were so clever, and seemed clueless about the original soundtrack/silence was in perfect harmony and mood of the film. Whatta a car crash they made of it!

This dinner looks A LOT like the same location in Nightcrawler (Jake Gyllenhaal)! The dinner scene where Luis Bloom interviews Rich . Does anyone know if it is the same location?
Another fine review which points out the color, costumes and camera shots. But I'll focus on one aspect, music. The review mentioned how the music is in the background of certain scenes or there was no music. When more thematic music was played for a scene, the review had a negative reaction. But I didn't. What I heard was a different style for a soundtrack.
- Drive has been compared with Taxi Driver and that is fair. But one difference between the movies is that Taxi Driver was scored by Bernard Herrmann. It's music is thematic which is memorable. This is an old music for drama tradition. Famous film composers like Williams, Morricone, Barry, Shore and Elfman are in that tradition.
- But the new trend in films is to use Temp Music. The TH-cam channel; Every Frame a Painting, has a video about this called; The Marvel Symphonic Universe. This trend is where directors play temporary music from their CD collection while doing a rough edit and the film composer is supposed to copy that. The result is a film score that sets a mood and which is forgettable.
- Drive is a fine film. But do I believe that Drive is as good as Taxi Driver? No. And one reason is the difference in style of the soundtracks.
Taxi Driver has one of the all time great soundtracks and Drive doesn't.
Silver symbolic if his trying to kill the werewolf?
As a fan of the seventies film The Driver I never took Drive seriously. Do you feel the latter is a rip off of the former? This episode has me wanting to view Drive again.
The two Ryan movies. I love Drive but yes it does feel like it's based on Walter Hill's late 70s movie The Driver...though that film had a more cops and robbers feel, with Bruce Dern playing the cop going after The Driver, Ryan O'Neal.
I don't think that Drive rips off The Driver but perhaps pays a bit of homage to it..the characters are similar but actually O'Neal's character is much more monolithic, more of a mystery and more impervious to those who wish him harm than Ryan Gosling's character who is more vulnerable in a way to the woman and her son, and even the husband who comes home from prison.
Drive is also based on the novella by writer James Sallis...don't think The Driver was adapted from a book.

I’m 8:03 into the video and I want to feel clever while also potentially looking like an idiot but from what I’ve gathered in this analysis silver’s prevalence in the film could be considered as Driver feeling second to the already established family he wants to be part of/take over. Let’s see if I’m a clown.
I don't understand why the word psychotic is used so often in describing the Driver. The Driver is not psychotic, unless he is truly living in his own world to the point of delusion, which, in fact, he may be, I suppose.

I really feel that Drive is really just a huge knockoff of Le Samourai. It's a really well done knockoff and I enjoy watching it, but if you compare the two films, Drive really doesn't bring anything new to the table.
Btw, I totally recommend Le Samourai to everybody. Easily my favorite French film.
Actually, Ghost Dog: the Way of the Samurai is more of a knock off of Le Samourai.

You're criticising the movie for being similar to a past film. Kind of like how the Dark Knight is a knockoff of Heat. But Drive and TDK both explore different themes and cinematic techniques. All the films are enjoyable in their own right and should be judged on their own merits
I really don’t get the hype surrounding this film
a lot has been said about that convo about 'sharks' and I'm gettin tired offit if anyone reads what the guy playing Bernie Rose said ' I shaved me eyebrows to look more like a Shark' the look when benicio sys there 'no good sharks' the look on drivers fce is that he has realised that 'the shark' was Bernie Rose and he was gonna screw over Shannon.
The Driver hunts one of his targets, suddenly pops out of the dark blue night to attack, and finishes him off in the ocean. Along with Refn saying he wanted to emulate a diver in an ocean of sharks for the first chase, I'm pretty sure Bernie doesn't have a monopoly on the shark motif.
I always liked the Rattlesnake and the woman. Similar concept to the Scorpion and the Frog. It's more of a joke, with the punchline being, "because I'm a snake, stupid".
I've never been a fan of the music or the color grading. I just prefer action and crime films, this one being above average. not the second coming, just a solid, entertaining movie. romance just kinda happened too. so jarring.
