      Same here. I was working in a call center at the time and it came on over the news. I had to put a customer on hold for a couple minutes to compose myself. His death was our generation's version of losing Elvis or Marilyn Monroe. Everyone I hear talk about it remembers where they were and what they were doing. He was one of a kind.

    Fun fact: The merchant at the start of the movie is Genie in disguise. They originally were going to reveal it at the end of the movie but for whatever reason they changed it. They put clues like the merchant being the only other character besides Genie who has only 4 fingers on each hand, he has the lamp that Genie picked up at the end, and both are voiced by Robin Williams. To be honest I wish they kept that reveal in.

    God, with…with the way Robin died, and knowing the depression he suffered for so long, hearing Genie celebrate so joyously and unrestrainedly for being free at the end…it makes me weep freely every time. Even seeing it in reactions. Especially when Aladdin hugs him. It feels like he’s hugging Robin for all of us.
    Thank you, Robin Williams. We ain’t never had…a friend like you.

    Improvised!?
    Robin Williams improvised so much they had to animate around him. He improvised so much, that they still have 30 hours of unreleased recordings thanks to his improv. He improvised so much, the script could no longer be considered for Best Adapted Screenplay due to how much original content was in it by Williams.

    • @Mrryn
      @Mrryn ปีที่แล้ว +33

      In fairness, this film started as a love letter to Robin Williams's standup style. iirc They got him to sign on board by showing samples of animations of the genie to his standup routine which basically convinced him they were fully on board with him and his energetic style not only being a centerpoint but that they would handle it perfectly.

    5:24 my dad owned doves because he was a magician and those birds were ridiculously stupid. To the point that they’d lay eggs while on the top perch and the eggs would just drop down and shatter at the bottom of the cage. I cannot underline how DUMB some birds actually are.

      Reminds me of how pigeons are related to doves and most wild ones in America are descended from abandoned pets. In the early 1900s I believe, there was a pet pigeon fad that was especially prevalent in America, but when people got over it they dumped their birds and they went feral and had tons of babies. But now these feral pigeons are kinda idiots who still dont know how to build a nest because the knowledge to do so was lost in captivity and they couldnt teach their babies.

    • @Melissa-wx4lu
      @Melissa-wx4lu ปีที่แล้ว +12

      This reminds me of a pair of pigeons that made a nest in a tree by my front door. That thing was like 4 twigs and 7 pine needles. You could walk over and look up and see the egg just rolling around on this flat plane. the nest was practically see-through. But hey, the egg hatched and I thought for sure that baby was going to drop right through that "Nest" But no, it survived. They returned the next year and used that "Nest" again. they added like 4 more pine needles to it.

    I find the art style of Aladdin to be very appealing because it was inspired by the late legendary artist, Al Hirschfeld. His art style consists of smooth, curvy, and wavy lines. You can see those elements in the character designs from the film, especially with Genie’s design.

    One of my favourite things is that when Disney hires animators, one of the exercises they say to practice is taking a sack of flour and giving it personality. Magic Carpet is animated in very much the same way where their personality is entirely conveyed through gesture. No facial expression, no sound effects really, no voice, just pure gesture and its fantastic to watch!

Just mentioning in the 90's tv series of Aladdin Jasmin gets turned into a rat so she has to life it for a while and by the end he told her father about the poor people, and he asked: "Poor people? There are actual poor people in Agrabha?" ... So this land is ruled by an idiot.

    Back in 1998, there used to be a Hercules animated tv show. There was a crossover episode where Hades resurrected the ghost of Jafar and they teamed up to take down both of their respective nemeses. So the scene with the Greek temples could be from the same world as Hercules, Mulan possibly too.

    Fun fact this actually wasn’t Robin Williams first animated role. His first voice acting role was in the movie Ferngully which came out three months before Aladdin and Disney’s CEO at the time Jeffrey Katzenberg hated the fact that Robin Williams was going to be in two animated movies in the same year that he demanded Robin back out of Ferngully but Robin refused since he signed onto Ferngully first and actually liked the message. Katzenberg was so angry that he did whatever he could to sabotage Ferngully which included buying out both studios the movie was being worked on at causing the VAs to have to record their lines in a bar which Katzenberg also tried to buy but the bar didn’t allow him too. Katzenberg then despite agreeing to not advertise the genie in promos as to not take the spotlight away from others Katzenberg mainly advertised the genie to get back at Robin but this caused Robin Williams to refuse to work with Disney for years.

    On the whole chopping the hand off for stealing things, you have to keep in mind that the world used to be a much harsher place. A lot of those merchants are not wealthy corporation owners, a lot of them only barley make enough to survive and keep their business running. A few thieves might mean your family starves, and their aren't ever enough law enforcement to handle every petty crime, nore is there a massive prison system like in modern day.

Is it weird that I feel like he's kind of a male Cinderella? He starts off as a commoner then marries into royalty. This also might sound weird but I always love how he's barefoot most of the time. As hippie as it sounds, I just always felt that lifestyle feels so freeing (as someone who hates wearing shoes).

    It always shocks me how many people are surprised that Disney movies have a lot of songs, or that they can get pretty dark. I never knew them any different.
    Also, the Mulan and Hercules films did not exist yet when this was made.

    This is ENTIRELY not the point of the movie, but Aladdin and Jasmine are both Muslims, and the thing is Islam is that you feed the hungry, even if you're stealing to do it. So TECHNICALLY, it's the shopkeepers and soldiers who really would be the bad people under that legal system. It would have been incumbent upon them not only to feed those little kids, but Aladdin, too, though they probably could ask him to work for them since he's old enough. And they would only chop your hand off if you were a LEGIT thief, and had been caught AND convicted three different times. There's actually not that much in the way of law in the Qur'an, but the two of them are still doing it better than the people around them, because the Prophet (PBUH) said you DON'T take away from orphans or children or the poor.

    Disney is just so pitifully sensitive right now, I miss the time when in Mulan (the good one) had a scene on how Mushu indirectly caused the death of one of Mulan's ancestors and it was played for laughs.

    Appareantly there's 18+ hours of Robin's improv as Genie. Enough to make film or two, but RObin William's testament prohibits using his lookness, voice, generated voice, generated appearance or old material without approval of his family was it 20 or 25 years. Its one of the first celebritiy wills that takes account even possibility of later creating his likeness or voice before AI generation was the thing... That man wasn't just multitalented but also visionary.

    Aladdin is a great classic Disney movie. Robin Williams as the genie and Gilbert Gottfried as Iago were fantastic and funny. The songs were great. Jafar is a crazy villain and wants to have power. RIP Robin Williams and Gilbert Gottfried. They're great comedians and will be missed so much

    15:25 So actually in animation the voice acting comes first, and the animators animate on top of that voice performance. In the case of Robin Williams he improvised so much that the directors said that 16 hours of footage were not used from his improvisations

    9:30 whoa, whoa. Not cause it's a man. There could be any number of reasons. Jafar hypnotized him, the guard believes that Jafar is speaking on behalf of the Sultan, Jafar has hypnotized the Sultan to give him higher authority, in the political system, the guards may respond directly to the advisor. For the last one, as a comparison, the President's direct orders can be ignored by military personnel if following the orders of an immediate supervisor.

    - This is one of my favorite Disney movie mostly due to Robin Williams as the Genie 🧞‍♂️, Gilbert Gottfried as Iago 🦜 , & Frank Welker as Abu / Rajah / Cave of Wonders, so here are some fun facts about this movie:
    - Interesting that in the song says that Aladdin didn’t have any parent because originally he was going to have a mother where she was even going to get a song too called “Proud of Your Boy” which speaking of Jafar as was going to have one
    - Fun fact the merchant from the start was actually going to be Genie in disguise
    - They wanted Sir Patrick Stewart to play as the voice of Jafar, but couldn’t be due to him as Picard in Star Trek The Next Generation & this wasn’t the only role the others being Cogsworth & Scar
    - You can see the Beast from Beauty & the Beast make a cameo in the pile of the Sultan’s toys
    - Besides Robin they also thought of other famous actors for the Genie like John Candy, Steve Martin, & Eddie Murphy, but with him they just let him go off with so many improvised lines. Also fun fact the outfit that the Genie was wearing as he is about to leave is the same that Robin Williams wore
