    Review of the Triumph Thruxton 1200 R @ 1000 Miles! She is a great bike, but I will give you some in-depth details to help you in your decision. It was a toss up for me, the Thruxton 1200 R or the highly anticipated 1200 Speed Twin. I ended up with the triumph thruxton 1200 R and don't regret it a bit.

    Well here we are in April 2023. I recently switched from a GSA 1200 for a Thruxton RS (so couldn’t be more different). Last year, for about 8 months, I had a really bad lower back (9/10 on the pain scale). The slightly leaned forward ergonomics on the Thruxton have really worked well for me. Decat and non stock exhaust with the combination of the Bonneville engine is just so good. I can go for c 2 hours without any hand/wrist pain, it’s more pins and needles than pain and a quick stop im good to go again. This is one of the best, most informative reviews I have seen and is spot on 🙏 ps mine has the dolphin fairing so clip on bars are lower, so naked has I think a 2 clip on lift which would also have less pressure on the wrists. You can also go extreme and buy full kits to lose the clip on’s all together and go for a straight bar (kinda like a fancy speed twin with pegs being a little more to the back) - so lots of options.

      I just had back surgery and just traded my Sportster S for the Thruxton RS for that reason. I pick it up on Thursday.

    Thanks for the honest and informative review. I had a basic Thrux a few years back, loved the style but always needed more engine and response. Just bought the R. Was pretty amazed just how good the powertrain was. Fast but still feels like a gentlemens bike. Very stoked to finally have the style and performance

    I just got the Truxston R. Mine is used, but only 3,000 miles on it. I to have owned many bikes from many different countries...never a Triumph though. This bike blew me away. I just put 1,000 miles on it. I live in Souther California and mostly ride in the mountains. FUN! I did a 230 mile ride and was surprised that I was OK at the end.I love this bike. Great review...thanks

    Spot on and measured review - I’m set on getting one next year. Purchased a T100 Bonnie lately vs a T120 as I thought the T100 was smoother. Then I got a ride on a 1200 Thruxton R some weeks later. I conclude that the Thruxton has a smooth and adequately powerful engine and that the suspension is excellent. I guess that’s an additional bike for the garage :).

    Stock OEM suspension setting is a little stiff but can easily adjusted to a much softer setting. I adjust mine quite often for drag strip, land speed racing and the street. The sprint pod filters work well it is hard to be the stock air box for performance. I switched to a Corbin seat that is a good option. I have about 7K on mine with no issues despite almost 30 runs down the drag strip and a dozen too speed runs at Bonneville. I too have and still own the 865 Thruxton, the Thruxton R is superior in every phase with the possibility of which looks better.

    Great review. Lover the bike, Got mine with 3 miles on it for $10k, its a movie bike:) Its funny what you said about harley guys not praising Triumphs. I'm in southern california and for 2 years straight I put 15k on my 2001 Kawasaki W650 riding with my group of friends 2 of which ride harleys, and the other two newer yamahas, and I can't tell you how many times other harley riders would walk right past my buddies bikes and tell me how badass my bike was because they thought it was an old triumph. On the other hand, on my TTR every once in awhile a younger guy on a Harley wearing all the, "I'm a baddass clothes" will pull up at a light, and look at me like I'm a punk,stomp on it and then get a little lesson when I blow his doors off. :) These babies can move and they are stealthy. I'm too old to take too many chances, but there are lots of guys trashing crotch rockets on the track and twistys.

    Excellent honest comments, I ve got mine 4y ago, exhaust shorties were the first to swap, then decat and filter changed the game, resonsive sound not Eu compatible but pure emotion. Feels like new blood in the engine. Had Ktm 950, Honda Crosstourer nice fun, but this is emotion, after 45t km it must be true🤗. Thinking of cam from Tec to add revs response although when pushing it Im happy with it, but little bit more would add lot of fun. Enjoy and go for this true feelings of joy.

    That was a really cool, very honest review. I would've liked to have seen it opened up up a bit more. Obviously not a long touring bike but I appreciate anything that is purpose-built and this is a cafe style corner carver, not a tourer or a Daytona track bike. I can't wait to ride one, I have my eye on getting one. I once had a 1969 Bonneville, it was stolen then a bunch of Jap bikes and even a Harley dyna wide-glide. I haven't had a motorcycle for 2 years and it sucks now, with the coronavirus situation going on these days a bike would be the perfect diversion. Shit!

    @TheReverb1 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hello mate; I have 3 old Triumphs and this one with the fairing and lower clip ons. First I do not understand how 1000 miles is a long term review; anyway; these are thirsty engines; never ever found those 175 or so miles out of the 14 liters of the tank. These are not to use at 90 - 100km/h in 6 gear. If you ride at 140km/h consumes a lot of gasoline and if you accelerate in some parts; consumes a lot. That is a big problem in my economy due to I use it as a daily commuter of about 60km and every week I put around 500km trip and the gasoline is expensive here. Tires are way expensive and in few km you need to change them. Overall quality is excellent. I still do not see any of that power that many mention. I fact; I do not see any relevance up to 130km/h in comparison with my Meriden 750 Bonneville that in theory has half the ponies. Sound and FEELING of the 270º firing interval is not good in my opinion. The bike is somewhat slow to keep gearing at least should need a quickshifter that I do not know WHY the factory did not put it (and the ecu does not admit--is needed another slaved ecu to switch) Yes; has speed but is slow (like a HD) to gearing I put 30000km in 2 years on a Husqvarna 401 and was faster in mid range and even my T140 feels somewhat the same as the thruxton r in this mid range or less. Bike is too heavy for a street racer.
    I use it as mentioned for those weekly longer commutes with a heavy backpack on the back without major issues. Possibly I will change the camshaft and rear sprocket. I have the V&H too. Showa fork is not so incredible in comparison with the WP of the Husqvarna.

    Im thinking of one of these. Ive had 2 Triumphs. Did not like the 900 motors as too tame. Did not like the 1700 twins. Grew up with Bonnevilles. Im 65 and need a slow bike thats lighter. I currently ride a zx14r . That gives me 50 mpg...with 200plus hp.. I like New England! Andvyour bike sounds excellent. I live in countrybWAustralia n maybe the stock more comfortable Thruxton would suit me better

    • @PeterDad60
      @PeterDad60 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi again. I'm pretty sure a Truxton R could win a cafe road race against your ZX14. Whatever your ZX can do as an average speed on a back road the Triumph would be going faster.
      Yes your ZX can go 200 mph but a Kentucky black powder rifle can send a bullet down the 1/4 mile in less than 1/2 a second. Put one turn and the bullet goes off track. Once you are at around 80 - 90 mph on a back road average you will be seeing the Triumph from behind.

    Thanks for great review!
    Would you recommend this bike as a first bike for someone who just got his driving licence? I know it might not be the best beginner bike, but would it be just foolish to buy a thruxton as a first bike?
    You mentioned that the thruxton is not very comfortable after a few hours of driving. Do you feel that this sporty driving position puts much pressure on your arms? Do you get sore wrists?

    • @BackDraftBikes
      @BackDraftBikes  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey bud - so here are a few thoughts- First, I would NOT recommend this as your first bike. It is way too much power and you will get hurt. Power on a bike can get you into trouble fast without experience. I would recommend something like a 865 scrambler, or maybe even a Honda Rebel 300, Yamaha V Star 250, or something on those lines. The 865 Scrambler is still pretty fast for a first bike, but not crazy fast like the Thruxton R. Second, riding position is actually really good on the wrists. Your weight is balanced and mostly on the butt, hence the sore butt moment after riding. Hope this helps! Have Fun and be Safe.

    • @anakletor
      @anakletor 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      BackDraft Thanks for answering! I guess you're right. Making beginner mistakes in such a powerful bike would have bigger consequences than on a smaller bike. Actually my local triumph dealer also said I should stay away from the thruxton. I might go for a Street Twin instead. Still a heavy bike but not so aggressive as the thruxton. Much cheaper as well.

    • @250frederic
      @250frederic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi there! BackDraft's points are totally right but still, there are a few things to consider that can actually make the Thruxton suitable for a beginner. First is the fact that the Thruxton has 3 riding modes: Sport, Road and Rain. The difference between Road and Sport is subtle but Rain definitely turns the bike into a gentle animal. Another thing to remember is that the Thruxton has ABS and Traction Control, most modern bikes have them now but beginners often buy older bikes that don't and I think that can be somewhat more dangerous for a beginner than having a large displacement engine. Also the brakes on the R are top of the line Brembos meaning you will get some of the best brakes on the market. They are very light and progressive and you need not worry about flipping over your handlebars. It's also a very low maintenance bike thanks to the liquid cooled engine and extremely reliable Fuel injection system. If you have the money, I personally don't see why you shouldn't buy the bike that you really want (unless it's like a Panigale or some crazy race track monster). I started with a 2001 Bonneville (790cc with carbs that didn't want to work as soon is it was cold or raining/humid), then upgraded to a 2014 Thruxton (865cc, EFI extremely reliable bike but not performance oriented and sometimes frustrating on the highway). I bought my 2017 Thruxton R last summer and I am in love with it! Anyways, if you have other questions don't hesitate, cheers!

    Nice review and report. Couple of cons that I've found (I have the standard Thrux1200 in Comp Green ) revolves around the instrumentation. Firstly, at night, the bleed through of backlight is atrocious and basically the analogue clocks become unreadable. Things aren't helped by the overbright LCD below. There are online fixes available if you're game, but we shouldn't have to. Secondly, and this is personal preference only, I'd like to have the time displayed permanently instead of the gear indicator. 1st world problems, I know...... Other than that, I love the bike. Looks, sounds and goes great.

    You don't lose handling on the Thruxton S in any situation that any rider short of Marq Marquez will see on real roads. Even it's too jarring for my tastes. I ended up with 5W oil in the forks and a set of Wilbur touring shocks on the rear and it's still plenty stiff and able to corner hard without drama.
    Triumph only puts the race bike bits on their bikes because they see Ducati making a fortune off people who don't know any better.
