      They were friends the entire time. They were roommates during the Olympics and every competition they were friends for years but they had to go along with what the media wanted them to do. With that they felt like it was hurting each other.

      Nicole Skorupsky i can’t remember correctly but i think they both said something along the lines of, the results of the Olympics is what affected their friendship. Shawn admitted to being jealous that Nastia won more medals than her and the biggest thing is the fact that Nastia won the all around and not her. It was mostly all from Shawn’s side, the jealousy and failure she said she felt after the Olympics and that’s what drove them apart. But I’m really glad they have both moved on and are great friends again and Nastia is apart of Shawn’s baby’s life, baby drew! 💗💗🥰🥰

She was on the National Team and their parents weren't allowed to visit them while they were at that camp. She had to know that things were happening even if it wasn't happening to her. @bananawammabama 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @Davy Lau This will probably sound cold, but consider her relationship with her father - or at least the one you can see on TV. He's a coach, he's Russian, and he comes off as very cold towards even his daughter most of the time. But y'know that's their relationship and I think because of it, and because of her life choices re: Olympics, she's a very tough skinned person... and I can see how any gymnast whining about being shunned or neglected can seem like, well like whining. It doesn't seem as legitimate of an accusation as being molested. I'm sure it was very tough but I'm sorry that's a little bit to do with the career they're in. Being pushed to be better is usually not seen as being comforted and celebrated. I DON'T think it's fair to say he contributed to an environment where it's ok to be molested.

    • @tylerbam7183
      @tylerbam7183 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @Davy Lau Mattie was a huge crybaby. She didn't jump complain about the Nassar abuse which was fully legit but about Marta's tough coaching techniques at the trial. Marta was not on trial so that was completely out of place to begin with, and she seemed to resent anyone who was tough, not just the abusive ones, and expects everyone to follow her. People like Nassar are disgusting but people like Marta who are tough are just part of the sport if you want to succeed. That is why someone like Mattie who are soft never succeeded in the sport.

      tyler bam that's not entirely true, in that the idea is the tense atmosphere was partially what allowed Nassar to gain the girls' trust by posing as the "good guy." And it's not necessarily true that coaches HAVE to be like that to get winners. Look at Shawn Johnson's (and Gabby Douglas's) coach, Liang Chow. No one ever made any kind of allegations of him being emotionally abusive in any way--he treated all of his gymnasts like his own children and was absolutely beloved by all of them by all accounts. But that being said, an unnecessarily tough atmosphere doesn't make the coaches morally accountable when a sick pervert takes advantage of that circumstance to get at young girls that way--but it does acknowledge that this sort of thing would be less possible in an environment like Chow's gym where the coach IS also seen as the good guy and there's no need for someone like Nassar to pose in that role.

    • @christinab812
      @christinab812 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      bananaxo Sorry bud, but if the gymnasts who trained with him for decades say otherwise, your opinion as some rando is really insignificant. Shunning a child for a human mistake absolutely does ostracize them and make it much easier for a pedo to creep their way in. Y’all wanna say “it’s the nature of the environment” no, the nature of the environment is inherently tough, not abusive. If you have to be abusive to get something out of your gymnasts, you’re just not good enough as a coach. If you expect literal children to toughen up when being abused for a medal, I think maybe, just maybe, you wanna go ahead and reverse the roles. Maybe it’s time to put Valeri in a similar, toxic environment with our criticism because well, maybe that’ll make him a good coach, and apparently humankind has descended to that level.

Because of the camps all the coaches and all the athletes were together so they all knew each other. Valeri could’ve had a lot of contact with Mattie. Especially during the worlds in 2010. That, to anyone outside those countries, has always been seen as "abusive", China’s way of training has been considered like that too. And that’s how Bela Karolyi used to train kids like Nadia Comaneci in Romania too. A different time and a different way of doing things.

      @E M You are completely right. I was just stating that, nowadays, people uses the term abusive very lightly. I mean, if I was a gymnast I would hate that kind of coaching because I do things much better in a more welcoming environment with encouragement, patience and counseling. In spite of that there is not point in denying that some of the things they do actually work. Certain kids do strive in a more strict environment with rules, toughness and a more militar kind of training. Again, I am not an expert, just a fan. And I agree there are newer and better ways of teaching too.

    I think people forget that at the core of USAG practices is one thing only: medals=money. I'm sure Valeri was told to keep his mouth shut and not stand up for anyone. Maybe he wanted to do that but couldn't because USAG and Marta had all the power. His daughter had a dream and even after 2008, he still had to watch what he said and did because maybe Nastia wanted to come back and they were looking into it? It really goes back to the mindset of not protecting the athletes first and always. Did he fail there? Maybe. We don't know. We weren't there. I'm not defending anyone but I will say the whole culture of silence in gymnastics is total crap. No one should be abused to achieve their dream. My gut says he was changing his ways because some of the current ladies said that he took them to the beach one day after a hard work out and let them relax and have fun. Marta would never have done that. Maybe people are assuming a lot too. I just think the culture is of silence and even if you see something you are told to keep your mouth shut. Maybe he was told the same thing?

      People "are" assuming. Innocent people are being accused , while I'm certain some guilty are not. We will never know who knew what for certain. But you say "Martha never would have done that"... yet, you "do" realize that Martha was the "National Team Coordinator" and NOT their coach! She met with the girls ONCE A MONTH for 2-3 DAYS! And while no, no beach, it was a FARM... full of zoo animals for the girls to relax and enjoy. At least that was the theory behind it. Martha rarely made suggestions to the girls directly. The girls were not even allowed to attend camp without their personal coaches. Martha would talk to the coach and pass it on over a two or three day period and then they headed back to their own gyms and applied. Martha was not cruel. Martha was FEARED. But she wasn't feared because she was cruel...SHE WAS FEARED BECAUSE SHE WAS THE "1" PERSON ON THE PLANET WHO COULD MAKE OR BREAK LIFELONG OLYMPIC DREAMS!! Watch ANY training videos from camp and you see the personal coaches right there with their gymnasts.
      Also, the accusations the Karolyis "allowed" that scumbag to abuse there?.... I'm sorry but I do not think they deserve the hate they are getting (God help me if I'm wrong). If parents, friends, and even coaches who were RIGHT THERE in the room, even chatting with the girls while the abuse was taking place, and they had no idea (even the girls didn't know it was sexual abuse) , then how would the karolyi's know? I do not believe they were aware of the horrific things Nassar was doing. I think Penny lied to everyone and shushed them all towards the end as everything was coming to light. I also do not believe Valeri was aware. I just cant. Your are SO right about the culture of silence. ANY Olympic sport is a harsh hardcore training environment on many levels. But very few, such as Gymnastics and iceskating, happen to be olympic sports involving CHILDREN and of course should have been managed 10000% better. Penny? He knew it all. He is the one who hid it all to cover his own ass. Who paid off Maroney and lied to everyone. He should be locked up FOR LIFE!! As should the head of MSU (he may well be). Sorry about the rambling. I still get crazy emotional on this topic. But again, having been to the ranch myself AND my daughter years later? I do not believe it was "allowed" as they've been accused. I think the whole US gymnastic scene was toxic - full of these Eastern European middle aged/old guys who knew how to make people win, but who didn’t care that kids got destroyed along the way. It’s good that we are talking about these things nowadays and these people disappeared from the scene.

    Yes, Valeri Liukin never coached Mattie Larson, however he was part of the team of adults who shut her out because they blamed her for "loosing the Gold Medal" after her fall on floor. Hence, he contributed to the culture of fear and abuse that she described in her impact statement (and that she has suffered from SO much).
    Mattie had EVERY right to bring up that story in court. She was raising concern that people in charge now were the same than before the scandal.
    I am REALLY disappointed in Nastia for trying to discredit Mattie, especially because she must know why Mattie mentioned Valeri, and that coaching had nothing to do with it. It really feels like victim shaming and then she pretends her heart still hurts...

      Unfortunately she doesn’t get it because she wasn’t subjected to it because daddy was in a very high position of power, and no doubt a smart man. Larry went after people who he knew were vulnerable and in some cases in desperate situations. I believe she was not a victim of his because he was scared of her father and the power and respect that people have for him. I truly believe that’s what it comes down to because you know if he ever had touched her that would’ve been the end for him.The Karolyis would’ve believed him no doubt.

      I'm genuinely confused about it. If he's not her coach how involved could he be to have to actively shut her out? He had no responsibility to do anything whether she performed well or not. We don't know but she had to have been sensitive in such distress and it does seem inappropriate to drop his name when her care wasn't his responsibility.

    • @m.lizziebrooks8889

      @@brittaho2098 He was coaching an other athlete (who was prominent) on the team and thus was part of the team of adult that was there. He had a lot of influence amongst the team of adult that was there as he was the owner of the gym that had produced 2 All Around Olympic Gold Medalist (Carly and Nastia). So he was an important guy with a lot of influence. And he basically influenced everyone to pretend like she did not exist because she had failed her floor pass (it was not her just being sensitive, everybody was awful to her). Later, he was named US team coordinator (one of USAG's most important position : you basically are in charge of choosing the teams). When Mattie mentioned him in her impact statement it was to point out that "a guy acting like that is now in the most powerful position, this can be dangerous for future athletes".

    This interview confirmed something which I have suspected from the beginning. Nastia chose her words very wisely, but you can almost here the undertone in her voice that implies that Mattie Larson is F&%KING crazy!
    I'm not trying to bash her, Mattie that is. I think that what she endured is horrifying and I hope that she is able to overcome the trauma that all of this has left on her psyche. However, after she made her court appearance, almost every other time you saw her (I remember 4 times: 1)NBC morning show, 2)ABC 20/20, 3)Lifetime aired a special after the Simone Biles movie premiered, 4)HBO [I think it was the show VICE]) she spent the majority of her time just dragging Bela & Martha Karolyi and talking about how horribly they treated her while at the Ranch. Yes, I'm sure it happened, but how did her testimony against Larry Nassar suddenly branch off into a witch hunt against the Karolyi's, Valeri Liukin and others? In a way, Mattie is still suffering from Larry's grooming techniques by taking her justified anger against him and redirecting it at an undeserving, but plausible, scapegoat.

    • @sgeetha7350
      @sgeetha7350 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because it happened at the Ranch .. How could you trust and seek help from adults who treat you so badly and are verbally abusive towards you? Also if they think you are weak or trouble it would just reduce your chances of making the national / Olympic team.. Martha would just kick her out and cover it up! There are so many things to consider in her position. Clearly it affected her a lot!
      As for Valeri.. come on.. You can't understand that she singled him out? It's because he was one of the adults who were part of the system that abused the athletes and treated them as useless unless they win medals. HE was given the job as coordinator of the national team, which means even if the Karolyis aren't there anymore, the culture will still continue. Valeri himself admitted that that was the system he grew up in and used in his own coaching.
      Stop victim blaming! Nastia will never admit her dad has ever done anything wrong.. it's her father and perhaps she SHARES HIS VIEWS? Who knows? Look up on what other gymnasts Valeri has coached say about him..

      @@surgeon1016 I agree with you that it's not right for anyone to blame Nastia for what happened, or for defending her father. She could have and should have been a little more sensitive about it, and she also missed the point. It wasn't about the fact that Valeri wasn't Matties personal coach

      Sadly, that is the first sign of a millenial. The second sign, in regards to speech, is using the word "anyways". That "s" does not exist. The final word is "irregardless". Sadly, this shows the degradation of education from speech and critical thinking, to humility and selflessness. I say this as a millenial whose mother worked tirelessly to ensure that I did not make those mistakes. I, too, make some of them, but am ashamed when I do and try to make corrections- unlike most millenials and the suceeding generations. They have no shame or guilt. They feel that they should be loved, flaws and all. That how they behave at home is acceptable in mixed company and locales. It drives me crazy, as it does you when you hear "like" repeatedly!

    People need to understand that Mattie said that there is abuse happening at MY gym (which isn’t true at all). She didn’t go to my gym, so she didn’t know what she was talking about. It’s the same thing with the things she said about Valeri. I’m with Nastia here. I understand that Mattie went through this abuse and it was so heartbreaking and she didn’t deserve it at all, but she’s just a little ignorant and she’s putting too much blame on the wrong people. Mattie was probably trying to figure out the heart of the issue, but flat out trying to destroy people’s careers instead of giving people a chance now that this horrifying news is out doesn’t help anyone.

      I am not saying this is the case with Nastia, but the recent arrests of celebrities, by the FBI, seals the deal on kids of wealthy parents attending certain really good universities, like NYU, after major 'donations' to the school. Nothing of it was on their merit, just the other M word, money.
      The charges being brought by the US attorney's office shows how wide-spread the problem is with it involving several actors' kids, several schools, and several Benjamins, with all of it to secure their acceptance to said schools.
      The NCAA may get involved, because some of the kids were given athletic scholarships, after the 'donations' to nust secure acceptance to the school, and not because the kid was a true athlete.

      L Vega what a horribly insensitive comment. I am glad that you have never had to experience sexual assault first hand. Many survivors of sexual abuse (or any abuse) suffer from a lot of psychological harm which, unfortunately, can lead to death by suicide in some cases, or the inability to lead a “normal” life following the abuse. So yes, they are all survivors.
