I don't even have any miniature games or paints but watching these videos is so relaxing / entertaining, you've made me want to get into the hobby. You are the Bob Ross of painting mini's man! Keep up the good work!
After watching several of your vids, 3 things became clear to me: 1) I suck at painting 2) I struggle to get my paint the right consistency--I know it when I get it right, but I can't repeat it all the time; 3) I don't use anywhere near the amount of paint you do, so maybe that's part of the problem with #2 4) I suck at painting lol. Yeah, I know I said 3 things, but that one needs repeating :). Thanks for doing all these great vids...while I'm never going to be as good as you and some other folks on TH-cam, it does provide some inspiration.
Hey, I feel the same way, I suck at painting. Just keep at it and keep doing just for the pure enjoyment of it! I'm pretty sure you'll get better and better
Ahhhh man I love it! My wife got me BP for Christmas and I haven't started painting yet but I know I'm going to begin with Clovis because he's my favorite core set hero. Thanks for all you do Sorastro!
Love your work! I stumbled across your videos and they inspired me to start painting my Black Plague miniatures. I have been ordering a lot of supplies online and have completed a few runners. I listened to Dufay while painting!
Clovis was one of my most "meh" characters in BP but now seeing this miniature, wow. I had no idea there was so much detail on him. Also it's gotta be said, the music this time around in your video is nothing short of fantastic. Keep up the amazing work buddy!
Awesome work mate. Just recently subscribed after looking for some general guidance on painting minis for D&D. I painted my first one over the weekend after watching this. It's miles away from your standard but I definitely applied a lot of your techniques where I could. Ive got a few questions though. Is there a reason why you spray the miniature with the varnish before you add the blood? I've painted a barbarian character and am considering adding blood to it but don't know whether I need to varnish first or not. Secondly, although on a similar topic, is there a particular varnish you would recommend? I tried searching for the one in you used in this video but can only find it for import from mainland Europe. The uk version seems different. Would you recommend any alternatives or will any matt varnish work? Thanks for your help and keep up the great work! 👍🏻
+Nick Jenkins Hi Nick! Thanks for the kind words! The only reason I applied the matte varnish before adding the blood was just to preserve the gloss finish of the blood. You could achieve the same result by brushing on some gloss varnish locally to the bloody areas of course. If you're in the UK you can get hold of the Testor's Dullcote in a couple of places although stock does come and go.. here's a pack of three from a reliable seller I sometime use on eBay: r.ebay.com/Fag6sH It really is my favourite matte varnish (although it is rather smelly). :)
3rd Time through for me on this video... fantastic tutorial... Will be watching 4th time tomorrow as I am staring "Clovis" (have done all the others in order). Many thanks.
Awesome work, just absolutely love watching your videos. I haven't even started painting yet but hope to start soon, Hope we get to see you paint some 40k stuff.
Love it. My only negative is I feel like using a mix of 3 or 4 colors just to highlight the metal is diminishing returns. There’s 100 shades of metallic out there, I can’t imagine this mix is worth the squeeze. But. That’s a minor complaint. Amazing either way.
Wonderful work, as usual, Clovis really comes to life :D And each time I see your work with the eyes, I'm damn impressed. This maybe a lot to ask but I would love to see a short tutorial video on your technique :) Anyway, glad to see your coming back to some Zombicide painting.
Thanks a lot Nick! I generally try to build in techniques into my videos but for eyes you've just gotta keep those wrists resting on the surface and the hands locked in place. Also - getting the consistency right helps too - not too thick nor too thin. :)
@@Sorastro Same here really impressed , the way you do the eye is stunning. Which pencil did you use ? And how are you sure about the right consistency for such a small amount of paint ?
You’re video tutorials are the best I’ve seen, thank you!! Have you or could you do a series on Massive Darkness? Also, could you post somewhere a list of video’s you’ll be doing next?
Thanks a lot Franz! No I'm afraid I won't be covering Massive Darkness. To find out what I'm working on next it's probably best to follow me on social media (see links in video description) and/or check my website where I post regular "Coming Soon" articles: sorastro.com/2019/10/05/coming-soon-autumn-2019/ :)
Hello. Great videos! Love it! Can you tell me (for starting person) which shades/washes are the most universal? And witch company? I would like to start painting my figures but I need these few advices :) Good luck with the channel!
Thanks Kamil! I personally enjoy using the Citadel Shades the most (from Games Workshop). They're not cheap but I feel they're worth it, even if you don't use their other paints :)
Hi Soranto, I love your work and I wonder if you could give me some tips? I have been painting super dungeon explore: forgotten king and while I do notice improvement I still have some problems with. 1:keeping a nice point on the brushes while painting. I use luke warm water with special soap to clean and store them facing down with the protective tubes on them. 2: how do I know I have my paint thinned enough? I use a wet pallet and it's either to thick losing the details or to thin so I don't have full control. any other tips are always appreciated!
Hi Rilain! 1) All I can suggest is after loading your brush with paint, drag it across some paper or something, but give it a little twist as you do so to help it form a nice point. 2) The thickness you want will depend greatly on what you're doing (base coating, glazing etc..). I'm not sure what to suggest to help you get the consistency you want however - just trial and error?
Very fine work, dear Sorastro. It's impressive that it takes around 7 layers (if I count correctly) on most "important" areas to get the effect you want - in fact maybe one more on the cloak, I believe. When I saw the way you painted the rivets of the studded armor, I just thought "oh snap". For the "tabbert" (@21:50), I'm surprised you didn't paint the front upper part's recess "just a bit" to get that nice color tone back. It feels very "dark" since I think we're actually seeing the initial base there - or are we? Also, nice work figuring out the rope from which the bundle hangs. I'm going to paint my Clovis too. I'm thinking of a green cape (because I use green markers for this character), but then purple indicates royalty more steadily... Hmm... Thinking... Why are there so many decisions to take? :-)
+Yan Hey Thanks a lot Yan Hey! I see the dark bit you're referring to; I left that dark as I read that as being dark belt strap rather than part of the tabard. You could of course paint it however you like :)
Hmm... Good point, it could be that too. I still have a hard time figuring out how our friend Clovis dresses. He's probably got some "underwear" (whatever we called these in middle age - probably looking more like modern pyjamas), then on top would be the padded armor and armor leggings, on top the tabard (thanks for fixing my spelling there), then on top the studded armor, then the cape. (I think it would have to be in that order if the tabard covers upper and lower bodies. Either that or it's a simple piece of front cloth wrapped around the belt, to offer more front covering - nah, that wouldn't make any sense, would it?) Either way, Clovis was probably ready to head out into a windy, cold city!
Hi Sorastro ! Maybe you mentioned it before in any of your videos or reactions below.... But can I ask you which brushes you are using most frequently ? I'm also wondering how you choose the colors for your mix to gain the actual color you want to paint with. Is there some kind of guide on this ?
+Alexandra Condijts Hi Alexandra! I usually include details of which brushes I'm using in the respective video descriptions (in this case a Rosemary and Co Series 33 size 2). When I'm choosing my colours I simply do my best to match the character art. I sometimes have to play around a fair bit with various combinations until I arrive at my final recipe , and for challenging miniatures I sometimes buy a second set of the game to practice on (like I do for Blood Rage). :)
I wonder if you ever do any 40 k stuff ? Company I was thinking is a ;Company of Misery". I haven't found any painting guides on them. if you could please take a look at them
Thanks for the great videos. I am learning a lot. Have you considered (or is there lurking in another video that I haven't found) an object based lighting tutorial? Thanks :)
Another great video. Can I ask how long you need to leave the shading before doing the highlights please - i.e. so the highlights don't 'reactivate' and mix with the shading. Thanks, Rob
+RobertSE6 Thanks Robert! It depends.. I usually place my minis in front of a fan to speed up the drying time, but it usually only takes a few minutes. It's also usually pretty easy to see when it's dry too; just check the crevices carefully to check they're properly dry. :)
I like the idea of Zenithal priming and the brown wash is interesting but I am struggling to see it show through anywhere. I have tried Zenithal priming on some larger figures but I cant seem to tell the difference. With the brown wash here it looks like it just gets painted over and I don't see how it makes a different result than just using the paint directly. And advice on how to see the benefit of these techniques or where to look to see what a mini would look like with and without these techniques? Thanks for the great videos as always
Hi Chris! The extent to which a zentihal prime shows through in the final product does vary quite a bit, and you're right - the effect here is negligible. However, the prime and shade still helps in that it gives us nice dark recesses which means we don't have to get the brush into every tiny nook; we essentially already have some effective dark lining. Whereas if I'd primed in white I'd have to be a lot more thorough and careful when applying the base colours. Yet the lighter tones given by the zenithal prime make it much easier to achieve the lighter base colours (compared to say painting over a black prime). So in this case, even if the zenithal pre-shade doesn't much show in the final product, it still makes it easier for use to achieve the desired level of contrast :)
Thanks Bruno! I think that the topic of mixing colours is too vast for me to go into here, but I would suggest simply practising on spare minis, and keep a note of any "recipes" that you're happy with for future reference :)

Hi Bill! I use Windsor and Newton Series 7 brushes, and Rosemary and Co Series 33 brushes. Never let them stand in the water cup, don't let paint get into the ferrule, and I like to give the brush a little twist against some paper after loading it with paint. :)
Hi Bruno! Sorry for the late reply.. I think I may have left the main body of the sheath with it's zenithal pre-shade, but really any kind of dark grey would be fine I think :)
I'm curious how excellent painters such as yourself get such a smooth finish on the miniature? After priming, base coats, shade, and highlights, my miniature ends up with a kind of chunky finish to it. (see: i.imgur.com/c8YFMKT.jpg) I try thinning the paints to a milky consistency but it doesn't seem to help. Any tips?
Hi John! For some of my series aimed at the beginner painter I sometimes like to use a dry palette just to keep things simple, and to show that you don't have to use a wet palette in order to paint well. :)
@@Sorastro thanks for the reply, I completely understand. Are you thinking on doing less advanced topics like how to handle paint consistency for doing base coats, layering or glaces with a wet palette? It's hard to have same consistency. I love your channel, you inspired me to retake miniature painting as a hobby with this black plague series.
+atkmonkey Hi altmonkey! I think if such a thing bothered me then I would have to be something of a masochist to leave such excess paint in my palette. :)
Sorastro's Painting, I am an engineer with obsessive compulsive disorder. All my palettes still look brand new, but I often wonder if this limits my painting. Great work. You are an inspiration.
Thank you sir! Well, some of the best painters in the world have incredibly messy palettes, whilst others keep things very clean and organised. All I would say is don't let anyone tell you there's a "right way" to do anything: wet palette, dry palette, clean palette, messy palette... the only right way is the way that works for you. :)
I can warn you: that mix for the metal is going to read very blue. I don’t think that ratio is correct. You probably should use more like 3:1:1 Leadbelcher:Black:Deep Sea Blue.
Sorastro I think your favorite color might just be Karak Stone. I think you use it in every one of your videos either as a way to lighten up other colors or just on it's own. Every video...lol.

Wow just found your channel amazing looking models looking forward to watching your other videos subbed !
Thank you so much ElvaanRanger! I hope you like the rest :)
That cloak is awesome, i need to be also patient to paint so many layers :)
Thanks mate! Yes - it's important to enjoy the process I think, that way you can be happy spending an hour or two just on one area - like the cloak :)
Any plans on covering the Dark Souls models from the board game that's out in April?
Hi Paul! I'd like to cover Dark Souls but I doubt I'm going to be able to fit it into my schedule unfortunately.
Sorastro's Painting fair enough, makes sense to go for quality and not quantity :)
I have to agree with you there Paul. It's not easy with so many great games floating around that I'd love to paint.. :)
i don't know if you have answered this before but are you planning on painting rising sun when it comes out?
+Doc Bogle Hi Doc! Yes, I will most likely be covering Rising Sun :)
oh man i can't wait to see your work. thanks for the reply
+Doc Bogle No problem! The minis sure do look amazing :)
they are outstanding
Keep up the good work
I watched the video a few ti es and still I could't notice when you painted the dagger sheath. And what color?
Hi Bruno! Sorry for the late reply.. I think I may have left the main body of the sheath with it's zenithal pre-shade, but really any kind of dark grey would be fine I think :)
Wow! Very hard one to paint and you make it look so easy. I think I painted this one 5 times before I was happy...lol. As always, ty for sharing!
Thanks a lot Rogue! :D
Do you use any sort of magnifying glass when painting?
+DethCricket Hi DethCricket! No I don't - not yet anyway :)
Wow that was a fast reply! Thanks! I think i need glasses i cant seem to get the tiny details any where near as perfect as you. XD
+DethCricket No problem! I do wear glasses.. maybe they're magic :)
woooh best!!,video paints dwars samson zombicide black plague?
Hi Jorge! I will be painting the last two figures from Zombicide Black Plague pretty soon... :)
Any tips?
+Don Chaiminster Hi Don! I've you've thinned your paints well enough I'm not sure what else to suggest. Can I ask which paints you are using?
Americana purchased from Michaels. I have a feeling that may be my issue.
+Don Chaiminster You may be right; perhaps try some Vallejo or something and see if you notice a difference :)
Watching it in 2020. Why are you not using a wet palette?
Лучший!!! Потрясающее видео!
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it 😀
Sorastro's Painting , Ооо! Мне искренне нравится! ))) Ещё очень хорошо подобрана музыка! Это именно то, что должно соответствовать ЗоМбИЦиДу! )))

I vote for Nelly next! I want to see how you capture that beautiful red hair.
:)
Thank you Big Sensey!
+Бонго69 You're very welcome! :)
where do you get this talent ?????
+Arnaud Desmettre Ha ha.. it's probably 5% talent and 95% hard work :)
teach me !!! ;)
teach me !! ;)
Teach me !! ;)
Do you ever get discouraged by the amount of paint that is left in your palette?
:)
I can warn you: that mix for the metal is going to read very blue. I don’t think that ratio is correct.
You probably should use more like 3:1:1 Leadbelcher:Black:Deep Sea Blue.
you should check out blood and plunder, such a great game
Thanks Ben - I'll check it out :)
Sorastro I think your favorite color might just be Karak Stone. I think you use it in every one of your videos either as a way to lighten up other colors or just on it's own. Every video...lol.
Ha - well spotted! :)
Why so much pink. 😢
Sorry..? 😁
Love your work Sorastro.
Look forward to seeing your take on Nelly, Baldric and Samson....*wink, wink*
Ha ha cheers Phil.. Well you'll know from my monthly update that Nelly is coming up soon... :) sorastro.com/2017/04/30/coming-soon-for-may/
Merci
You are very welcome! 😀
Hello, I learn a lot with your videos ... thank you very much ... and I try to do the same, greetings from Spain
Greetings Nasho! Thanks a lot for the kind comment :)
zombicide green tide is coming! better hurry up xP
Ha ha :)
I'll never understand GW's naming method lol
Ha ha - I hear you; I'm the one who has to try and pronounce the damned things! :)
I get that all the names are to their own properties, but still heh. Also, do you tend to paint all of your models with overhead lighting highlights?
I don't think they understand it either.
I think I will for most minis, but perhaps not for any figures that are predominantly very dark or very light :)
inmejorable..
Amazing!, i would like to start painting my own figures, whats your recommendation for a startkit? brushes, paints, etc.?
