Wow, there were so many things I didn't expect in this episode; adding purple to the red hair, using a de-saturated green to boost skin highlights, and the trick of using a yellow to boost luminosity on the white apron. I feel like I've learned more from watching these tutorials than I have in a long time.
I liked how you mixed the purple in multiple areas like skirt, apron, corset, shirt and even the red hair. It worked and seems to bring the different elements together.
Excellent tutorial as always! Especially interesting for me is your take on painting the hair and your use of color for increasing the luminosity of highlights.
Thanks a lot! I've been working on improving my handling of colour lately (including luminosity highlights - thanks to Alfonso Giraldes who gave a wonderful masterclass here a couple of months back) :)
This is indeed a dynamic miniature, I like the look on her face, and that hair gradient is Legit. I'm learning a lot about colors and blending them from your videos--I'd have never thought to use bright yellow to brighten up an ivory toned white like you do here. Nicely done!
Your tutorials are great and I learned so much from your Star Wars series but I gotta say that the editing, script and music is great. I enjoy watching all your videos without owning any of the minis, apart from a couple of the Imperial Assault ones. You are a very talented individual, on many levels. Impressive and envy inducing. Keep it up!
Well a great artist deserve praise! You got me into the hobby again after being dormant for 20 years! A question if I may. I really like your blood effect but I got to ask you if you have ever tried the Citadel Technical Paint Blood for the Blood God and if so what you think of it? Im thinking of taking the lazy route since I having trouble finding some good stores here in Sweden with Tamiya paints.
Hi Sorastro. You seem to often mention that pure white is chalky and for that reason when glazing and blending, you use ivory. I can't remember if I mentioned it but using artist grade heavy body titanium white (the ones in tubes, like Winsor and Newton's, or Golden's for instance) on a wet palette is a game changer. It's superbly smooth and has a long drying time which allows one to work the paint.
Hi Kapouille! Thanks for the tip. I do actually have the Schmincke Titanium White and I agree it is nice to use. I've been hesitant to use it in the videos however as I suspect it's not a paint that most of my viewers will have in their collection, but I think I will have to make the switch at some point. :)
You will not regret it... and neither will your viewers :) It *is*, however, a bit of an investment, as a tube costs a bit, given its size - which would last a lifetime. So not something beginners may want to grab straight away, but it could be attractive to intermediate painters that know they want to get more painting done in the future!
Love your painting style. And the tutorials are lovely to follow. Already used your zombie video for inspiration! Also made me order a copy of this game ;D keep bringing us awesome videos matey :)
I don’t even have this miniature (or game), but watching these videos is still a pleasure and education. The way you’re carrying the purple and orange through other colours is fantastic. Would love to know how you know this!
Sorastro's Painting thats good to know. Takes some of the pain away. Going to look for some similar miniatures and follow the colour scheme - only makes sense to me once I’ve tried it.
I just loved it! I really like the videos you blend in colors. This is far from being a criticism but I feel there's a slight change in your style in this mini. You're definitely growing as an artist! I'm now more curious than ever to watch your next work to know if it was a definite change or just a one time thing. Did you notice anything? Once again don't let this a compliment!
Thank you Bruno! I do like to consciously vary my approach from time to time to keep things fresh but also to push myself (and my viewers!). I definitely wanted to go a bit deeper with my handling of colours - I was really searching for more richness and nuance. I also wanted a cleaner look for the fabrics which is why I avoided using washes for them. :)
Hi! Awesome work as always. You are my gold standard for tutorials. Something I've always wondered, and apologies if you have addressed this elsewhere, but what treatment do you give to the underside of flowing fabrics like the skirt and apron on Nelly here? Just leave it in the original base spray color, paint it in the base layer color, paint it black or Grey? Thanks. :)
Thank you Andy! It depends but usually if I'm working over a zenithal prime then the undersides of those areas will be pretty much black and can be left alone. Otherwise they may need neatening with some black or dark grey :)
I love your work! I know you get a lot of people bothering you with suggestions of what to paint but I just can't resist doing it! I'd love to see your take on AVP: The Hunt Begins Second Edition. The new edition minis are unicast and fantastic! Thanks for the terrific videos!
Thanks a lot John! My schedule is looking pretty crazy over the next several months so there's a good chance a I won't get to covering AvP although it does look awesome! :)
Dear Sir, Watching your painting videos bring me great pleasure and calm. You are very gifted and inspiring to watch. Your choice of music is excellent. Is it possible to know what kind/brand/type of brushes you have used in this video? Cheers !
An outstanding faded white. All these purples and oranges in the brown part; have you be playing with some scalecolor paint sets? A beautifully painted miniature, the day you paint a miniature made in a decent material, you won't believe it. :)
Thank you so much Mikel! I do have a couple of Scalecolor paint sets but haven't really had time to try them out yet. I'm planning to begin work on my KDM minis in the autumn so perhaps I'll notice the difference in material quality then.. :)
The Scale 75 paints need a different approach to painting, so they need an adaptation process, but they are awesome to apply more advanced painting techniques. I'm wishing to see how you paint the KDM minis.
This tutorial is wonderful and has inspired to maybe take it up as a hobby. I noticed you use a lot of different paints. Is there a starter set I could get so I don't have to buy too many individual colors?
Thank you Alex! I'm not sure there's any starter set out there that will have the precise colours you need for a specific project to be honest. I'd suggest just buying whatever individual colours you need for just one figure or group of figures, then expand your collection from there :)
Wonderful tutorial, I am new to painting and was wondering, as a new painter do you recommended any certain core citadel paints? Or for the price would I be better off buying an Army painter set? Thanks for the tutorials and any insights!
+Shane Flewellen Hi Shane! That really depends on what you're going to paint but I generally recommend buying individual paints to build up your collection gradually. I would also recommend considering Vallejo as they have the quality of Citadel paints but a little less expensive. :)
Thanks for the response, I have mostly zombicide to paint first and then some arcadia quest minis. I will certainly look into Vellejo also, thanks so much.
When you are painting the dress and corset is the expectation that the zenithal priming will not be showing through? If that is the case, with a large potion of the miniature being the dress and the corset is the zenithal priming only for the hair and white cloth areas?
Hi Parker! The zenithal pre-shade is helpful for a number of reasons, and I'm planning to address it in a separate video soon. For example - irregardless of how much of it still shows through for areas like the dress, it saved me having to paint any of the shadowed underside of the dress, whilst giving me a nice bright top surface to work on. :)
Thanks for the reply. Since I am not really a painter (looking to change that soon) I like to try to understand the theories behind the decisions rather than understanding it from a practical standpoint.
When I first got back into painting a few months ago I opted for some Army Painter brushes. In comparison, the R&Co brushes are outstanding and slightly cheaper - so to answer your question, they're great.
Great vid as always, S. I am curious, do you think these techniques are applicable to a mini of a more cartoon style, eg. Super Dungeon Explore? Or do you think it would be a bit of a clash of styles? Thanks, t.
I've already bought Skaven's ones but I don't know how to begin for getting a good "paint quality". So I asked you to share your talent through a video.
Sorastro please answer : your color are highly diluited (with water????) but they have high coverage power ...how is it possible? When I use water ....my color don't cover anything. PLEASE do a generic tutorial about mixing color with water, with other color and so on...
Hi LovoAle! Yes I usually just thin my paints with water, but I do subtly vary the concentration throughout the painting process. It's important to learn to get a feel for how different paints behave at different levels of dilution. Can I ask which brand of paints you're using?
Excellent work as always, was wondering if you ever have a hard time righting the music for your videos, and did you go to school for music or are you mostly self taught.
Nice ideas with colours, like adding green to the skin and yellow to the white (to make it look more white :D). I was just wondering if you let the previous coat dry before applying the next one while painting the apron and the skirt or was the paint still wet for the damp brush to work?
Thank you so much! Yes I've been working hard on pushing my colours more lately :) When highlighting I usually let the previous layer dry before going over it with the next, but I do sometimes use a damp brush to feather the edges of a layer whilst it's still wet to help achieve a smoother transition :)
hell yeah! just in time for lunch :) I hope you do a video or two for one of the new models for Warhammer 40k 8th edition. The new Death Guard look sick.
Hi Sorastro, thanks for your video's, they are very helpful! Do you think you'll make a Zombicide Green Horde video to show how to proceed with green skinned miniatures please?
When do you think you might get back to complete the base heroes? I (like many others, I don't doubt) am really looking forward to seeing your takes on Baldric and Samson. I for one won't dare start my paint up until I've seen what you're going to do. You're our water wings! ;)
+Richard Masters Thanks Richard! I was actually scheduled to paint Baldric this month sorastro.com/2017/08/31/coming-soon-for-september-2/ but due to time I've spent preparing my first album he's been delayed until October 😀
Thanks a lot Ralf! I don't have plans to do any more Runewars in the immediate future, although I might cover the two hero bosses with a quick PDF guide :)
Well, count me as a patron interested in more RW material - though I suspect those will remain far in the minority compared to Descent, IA and Zombicide. :) Looking forward to the pdf guide.
Thanks Lancegrim! That would be the Rosemary & Co Series 33 Size 2 (by go-to brush). For future reference, I usually put that info in the video description :)
How do you keep such a nice tip on your brushes? I have tried a number of tips from others, but I still find that the bristles open up after a few strokes and i have to constantly clean my brush to bring it back under control.
+Tristan Whitley OK. I'd recommend trying some kolinsky sable brushes like the Rosemary and Co Series 33 (size 2 is good). I think you'll notice quite a difference :)
+Wolffe Hi Wolffe! That was more of a one-off video and I'm not planning to do any more in the immediate future. Each pack comes with the necessary colours and colour guide anyway so there's not much for me to add :)
Sorastro's Painting awww man that unfortunate, I was hoping that one of my favored painters was going to paint Warhammer 40k. Oh well I guess I will have to stick with your Star Wars painting tutorials 😋
Wow, this series are pretty impressive. Did you hear about "Mice and Mystics" board game? I would wish you make a painting guide for those figurines, it would be definitely awesome. Regards Hector Ladron
Hi Chris! For this tutorial I used a Rosemary and Co. Series 33 Size 2 brush and a Windsor & Newton Series 7 Size 1. (I usually put that info in the video description for future reference.) :)
Hey Sorastro's Painting , Good day to you and I hope you're doing well?. This Sorastro's Zombicide: Black Plague Painting Guide Ep.8: Nelly turned out just Excellent!!Thank you for sharing your time, creative ideas, tips, talents, skills, easy to follow instructions, and super creative fun videos. :) Two Thumbs up!! This was fun to watch. Take care, keep on doing what you love to do, wishing you the very best, and have a super creative weekend. :D Peace & Joy (edit: I really have learned a lot from you. Thank you once again. I Subscribed on part 1, liked, and shared. Cool stuff.) Back to more videos. :P
Hi Sorastro's Painting, I hope you having a good day. Since I last watched most all of your videos, I bought all the Black Plague Box games. Needless to say, there are a ton of minis with every box game, I got over whelmed after painting my first 60 or so. hahaha I put them on the self for now. I hope to get back to painting them and more of my Reaper Minis soon. Thank you once again for sharing your Excellent painting videos. Take care, wishing you the best, and have a wonderful day. Peace & Joy edit: Thank you, back to more videos :P

Thanks so much sir! I've been getting a bit deeper into colour recently so I'm glad you liked those extra touches :)
Thank you so much for continuing to make these. Your Zombicide tutorials have been invaluable. They've helped so much.
Thank you coralinealgae! Much appreciated :)
I liked how you mixed the purple in multiple areas like skirt, apron, corset, shirt and even the red hair. It worked and seems to bring the different elements together.
+Jonathan Vanasse Thanks Jonathan! Well spotted RE the purple :)
Love that Fugan Orange! I love going back and rewatching your videos!
Thanks pal! :)
TheSilentW felt the same way
Do you have a link to it, if it was on TH-cam?
Keep it up! Looking forward for more videos from you, don't stop!
Thank you sir!

Thanks a lot Christopher! I remember really pushing myself with the colours on this one, so I'm glad you liked it 😀
I'm using your painting guides to great effect. Thank you for the tutorials, keep them coming, and big thumbs up!
Thanks Lord_Ornifus! I'll keep them coming :)
Your blending techniques are a joy to watch. Great video.
Thanks a lot Ian! Much appreciated :)
Ian J I
Your tutorials are great and I learned so much from your Star Wars series but I gotta say that the editing, script and music is great. I enjoy watching all your videos without owning any of the minis, apart from a couple of the Imperial Assault ones. You are a very talented individual, on many levels. Impressive and envy inducing. Thanks again! Yes I have tried Blood for the Blood God and I think it's great as a "lazy" option :)
you are my fav paintor. It is bc of your videos that i started painting minis. thank you!
+Gamba Gaming Thanks a lot Gamba Gaming! :)
Congratulations, another great painting job
Thanks a lot Victor! Glad you like it :)

Incredbile work as usual, fades and shades are superb ! Thanks :)
Thanks a lot Nick! Glad you enjoyed it :)
I honestly cant wait for your music to be published.
Thank you! I'm hoping to be able to afford to publish in the spring :)
Absolutely love the tutorials. Truly masterclass painting... That being said, pleeeeeeease finish the last two characters in the core set!!!!
Thank you Nicolas! Don't worry; I will complete the set :)
Wow, talk about a quick response lol Can't wait to see your work! You do an incredible job of capturing the artwork in the game.
Ha ha thanks - (I happen to be sat at my computer editing the next IA video) :)
Love when you do Zombicide stuff!
+Xavier Shorten Thanks Xavier! Just 2 more to finish the core box! I'll be doing Baldric next :)
Love your painting style. And the tutorials are lovely to follow. Already used your zombie video for inspiration!
Also made me order a copy of this game ;D keep bringing us awesome videos matey :)
Thanks a lot Tim! I'll keep doing my best :)
YES! More Zombicide! I actually thought you were not going to keep doing ZBP lol.
Hurrah! I am absolutely going to finish the core set at least (only 2 heroes left!) :)
Sorastro's color theory goes to 11.
Lol - thanks Brian :)
SSERIOUSLY, that apron highlighting.
Where does all that color science come from.
Awesome work as usual Sorastro ! you are a great source of inspiration.
Keep going on ;-)
+Olivier Clary Thanks a lot Olivier! That's very kind :)
I don’t even have this miniature (or game), but watching these videos is still a pleasure and education.
The way you’re carrying the purple and orange through other colours is fantastic. Would love to know how you know this!
Thanks mate! I remember really enjoying exploring the colours on this one :)
Sorastro's Painting have you studied art?
@@alexwhyte78 Yes, at art college but a long time ago! :)

Ha ha - thanks Apoc! :)
A beautiful white there. Very impressive.
Thank you Bethany! That was one of my main goals with the piece so I'm glad you enjoyed the white :)
Are you following the Zombicide Green Horde Kickstarter? Can we look forward to seeing you painting miniatures from that set next year?
Hi Sturmhawke! I'm honestly not sure at this stage :)
At this point they should be contacting you to send it for free.
Yes, I have to admit that this Feral Dragon would made quite an impressive Painting Guide video :D
I love your work! I know you get a lot of people bothering you with suggestions of what to paint but I just can't resist doing it! I'd love to see your take on AVP: The Hunt Begins Second Edition. The new edition minis are unicast and fantastic! Thanks for the terrific videos!

Dear Sir,
Watching your painting videos bring me great pleasure and calm. You are very gifted and inspiring to watch. Your choice of music is excellent.
Is it possible to know what kind/brand/type of brushes you have used in this video?
Cheers !
Thanks a lot Carl! I'd have to check the video description, but these days I favour the Rosemary and Co Series 8 Size 2 brush :)
thanks for amazing guide!!
You're most welcome! :)
awesome job
Cheers!
This is amazing!
Thank you very much! 😀
An outstanding faded white. All these purples and oranges in the brown part; have you be playing with some scalecolor paint sets?

+1 Scale75 paints being amazing
+1 Sorastro painting Kingdom Death
KDM all the way. Some amazing models in that range.

@Sorastro's Painting - your videos are great - they got me back in to mini painting!
P.S. purchased the R&Co. brushes on your recommendation.
Thank you WayWARD8! How are you finding the R&Co brushes?
When I first got back into painting a few months ago I opted for some Army Painter brushes. In comparison, the R&Co brushes are outstanding and slightly cheaper - so to answer your question, they're great.
Excellent! I'm glad to hear it :)
Great vid as always, S. I am curious, do you think these techniques are applicable to a mini of a more cartoon style, eg. Super Dungeon Explore? Or do you think it would be a bit of a clash of styles? Thanks, t.
Thanks Tomitar! I think so.. I wanted quite a bright, clean look for Nelly which I think would work well for chibi-style minis :)
I've already bought Skaven's ones but I don't know how to begin for getting a good "paint quality". So I asked you to share your talent through a video.
Sorastro please answer :
your color are highly diluited (with water????) but they have high coverage power ...how is it possible?
When I use water ....my color don't cover anything.
PLEASE do a generic tutorial about mixing color with water, with other color and so on...
Hi LovoAle! Yes I usually just thin my paints with water, but I do subtly vary the concentration throughout the painting process. It's important to learn to get a feel for how different paints behave at different levels of dilution. Can I ask which brand of paints you're using?
Excellent work as always, was wondering if you ever have a hard time righting the music for your videos, and did you go to school for music or are you mostly self taught.
Thank you Graham! Yes I do have formal training in music (and play the piano). Writing the music is still a challenging process but I do love it :)
Jeff Phillips pun approved
+lostsanityreturned Ha ha.. I've got a cream for that :)
Hi Sorastro, thanks for your video's, they are very helpful! Do you think you'll make a Zombicide Green Horde video to show how to proceed with green skinned miniatures please?
Thanks Matthieu! I may cover some Green Horde at some point but not at the moment as I'm already over saturated with projects :)
This may have been answered before in a video but what kind of brushes/sizes do you use/recommend?
+Vecks Shadeseeker Hi Vecks! I usually put details about brushes in the video descriptions :)
I was actually scheduled to paint Baldric this month sorastro.com/2017/08/31/coming-soon-for-september-2/ but due to time I've spent preparing my first album he's been delayed until October 😀
just wondering what paint brushes you use in this vid. Im looking for something like these. long and a great point.
Hi Eric! I use mostly a Rosemary & Co Series 33 Size 2 (as per the video description :) )
Excellent as always, many thanks! Will you be doing any further Runewars videos in the future, or was that a one-off?
Thanks a lot Ralf! I don't have plans to do any more Runewars in the immediate future, although I might cover the two hero bosses with a quick PDF guide :)
Well, count me as a patron interested in more RW material - though I suspect those will remain far in the minority compared to Descent, IA and Zombicide. :) Looking forward to the pdf guide.
good job. What music you use for video mr?
Thank you sir! I compose all of the music myself :)
Oh.You are very gifted artist.Thank you.
Thank you sir!
Nice Video, but what i always wanted to know: what brush are you using? It has an awesome tip.. need to know please
Thanks Lancegrim! That would be the Rosemary & Co Series 33 Size 2 (by go-to brush). For future reference, I usually put that info in the video description :)
Sorastro's Painting hmm i must have missed that. Sorry about that. Thanks alot.
No problem! :)
video paints dwarf samson zombicide black plague?
magistral como de costumbre
Thank you very much! :)
How do you keep such a nice tip on your brushes? I have tried a number of tips from others, but I still find that the bristles open up after a few strokes and i have to constantly clean my brush to bring it back under control.
+Tristan Whitley Hi Tristan! Can I ask which brushes you're using?
I am using a number of Army Painter brushes (Regiment, Monster, Detail)
+Tristan Whitley OK. I'd recommend trying some kolinsky sable brushes like the Rosemary and Co Series 33 (size 2 is good). I think you'll notice quite a difference :)
When are you going to do more "build and paint" tutorials?
+Wolffe Hi Wolffe! That was more of a one-off video and I'm not planning to do any more in the immediate future. Each pack comes with the necessary colours and colour guide anyway so there's not much for me to add :)
Sorastro's Painting awww man that unfortunate, I was hoping that one of my favored painters was going to paint Warhammer 40k. Oh well I guess I will have to stick with your Star Wars painting tutorials 😋
Aww thanks. There's a chance I might pick up some of the new 40K stuff at some point.. :)
Wow, this series are pretty impressive.
Did you hear about "Mice and Mystics" board game?
I would wish you make a painting guide for those figurines, it would be definitely awesome.
Regards
Hector Ladron
+Kiwi Snow Thanks a lot Hector! Yes I've heard of M&M but doubt I'll find time in my schedule for it in the foreseeable.. :)
I like to think I'm getting fairly competent at painting and as a result I'm never prepared to learn as much as I do from each new episode.
Thanks so much Nathan! I really appreciate that :)
I've got a question. Could you do "Painting Tutorials" with Blood Bowl's figurines ?
Otherwise I enjoyed your video. Continue like this.
Thanks Arthur! I'd love to paint my Blood Bowl minis.. I've got them all primed and ready but I'm not sure when I'll find time to tackle them :)
"tackle"
what brush are you using
Hi Chris! For this tutorial I used a Rosemary and Co. Series 33 Size 2 brush and a Windsor & Newton Series 7 Size 1. (I usually put that info in the video description for future reference.) :)
Please keep working on the CMON games! Rising Sun & Zombicide Green horde!!
Just have to ask, who are the ones giving thumbs down? Feel like it is the same people. But never see any constructive criticism as why?
Good question! I've no idea but I don't let it bother me - not when so many lovely viewers give me a nice thumb up :)

Hi there! Thank you so much - that means a lot to me :)
Merci
Sorastro... we all know that you sacrifice kitties for your skills =D
+Attila Dukai ROFL Attila! :D
would have liked to see a head-swap on this sculpt as she looks like a Mu-tant, otherwise stellar work.
Thanks mate! I agree - her mouth in particular is kinda funny..
you are too good for us, my friend. thank you for all your contributions.
+WartimeConsigliere You're most welcome sir! :)
If only I can show mine vs Sarastro's ... it would be like Expectation vs Reality memes.
Well Mario, I think a more useful comparison would be your unpainted mini(s) Vs your painted minis, and I bet they look 100X better when painted :)
