I kind of feel like that's because Jack's the POV character, and he's too dumb/stubborn to ask what's going on and insist that he gets better explanations. The audience doesn't really fully know what exactly is going on because neither does Jack. He's also not really the lead character if you look at the story closely: He's really more of Wang's bumbling sidekick...but he doesn't really seem to realize it, and since he's the POV character....
The easiest way to explain this movie is that Jack thinks he's the main character but he's actually Wang's sidekick and it's really Wang who's the main character, and that's why Jack doesn't know what the hell is going on and is just swept along all the weirdness. Wang's the one who goes on a quest to save his girl, the one who knows how to fight, knows what's going on, and who gets the girl in the end. Jack's just there to help because he wants his truck back.
This! Jack has one skill, his reflexes, he screws everything not related to his reflexes up. BTiLC is perhaps the best inversion of the White Savior trope ever filmed.

And they really do. Originally Diyu (Hell) had 12,800 hells located under the earth - eight dark hells, eight cold hells, and 84,000 miscellaneous hells located at the edge of the universe. The difference between hell in Chinese folklore and myth is that the suffering you have to endure is not indefinite, it depends on the severity of the sins you committed. After receiving due punishment, one will eventually be sent for reincarnation. Over time The Lord of Hell, Yama reduced the number of hells to ten. He divided Diyu into ten courts, each overseen by a Yama King, while he remained as the sovereign ruler of Diyu.
@@2apocalypse-X actually that isn't much of a difference, according to tradition, all hells are temporary, modern Christians are just a bit confused about their own mythology (Jews, and Muslims, coming from the same general tradition, both cite hell as temporary and purifying -though in the Islamic case it is super brutal and can last a really, really long time).

This is one of my favorite John Carpenter movies. I love how it bucks expectations by switching the roles of the hero and sidekick where the “hero” is the one out of his element and that his “sidekick” is the one who is in his element. That plus the way Carpenter and Russel chose to have Jack have all the ego and swagger but be completely clueless and for the most part ineffective like how in the big battle he knocks himself out and then is pinned under a dead body for most of the battle lol. Sadly at the time the film did poorly, in part because the ads were pretty bad and it was released opposite Aliens. Luckily over the years it has gone from being a cult classic to a more universally recognized film.
Great selection. This is one of my favourite movies. When I was a kid I always remembered the scene where they're underground. I never knew what the movie was called for the longest time until I was a big older and I saw the same scene. No google back then. I got my mum to buy me it after I wrote the name of the movie down. Love it! Good ol' Jack Burton!
I think that hairy creature used to be a human, that Lo Pan cursed and turned into a monster, but who knows, doesn’t really though, LOL. This is one of my favorite John Carpenter movies. Along with The Thing, Halloween, They Live, Vampires, and Christine.
Fun Fact: Big Trouble was nominated for Best Movie Ever Made by the Academy Awards, but lost to Highlander. As others have already pointed out, The Mrs has great instinct. The original Mortal Kombat modeled their Raidan after the Storm named Lightning. The game's end boos named Shang Tsung is directly modeled after "Emperor" style Lo-Pan. In their early character design, they actually planned a Jack Burton stand-in for the games as well, but pulled it since they thought it would move them from homage to intellectual theft. If you thought the setting for this was weird, you got lucky. The original script for this had it set in the Chinatown of the old West, with Wang Chi as a rail road worker and Jack Burton as a gunslinger.
I think the film was based off of a story set in the West where the character Burton was based on had his horse stolen much like his truck and that's why he's on this quest. It follows many of the same beats.
My dad worked a couple blocks from Chinatown from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Thursday through Saturday back in these days. I was a young kid. Sometimes on Fridays or Saturdays I would go into work with him and sleep under his desk in the computer room while he worked. Having seen this movie, I'm sure you can imagine the fun I had imagining what might be around every corner, down every alley or under the streets below.

So great. "Have yah paid yer dues, Jack? Yessir, the check is in the mail!"
Victor Wong (Egg Shen) had to travel to Hollywood to film the prologue right after attending the wake for his son, Lyon, who had been assaulted and killed in Sacramento a week earlier. Even knowing that, I love this movie on so many levels, and I use quotes from it all the time. Thunder is my favorite storm by far.
Wow, it's been years since I watched this weird & fun movie. I'm rewatching the movie as I watch the reaction - watch some movie, then the reaction to what I just watched. Back and forth.
Victor Wong was in Prince of Darkness, which is probably where Mrs Wife Lady recognized him from. Just like Dennis Dun was also in Prince of Darkness too. Carpenter was hoping Dunn would have become more famous, but he never did go on to bigger roles. This film has some actors though that weren't known to western viewers. Carter Wong, who plays Thunder, was from China and was in Kung Fu movies there. He also taught Martial Arts and even created his own fighting style. Suzee Pai that plays Miao Yin, was a cheerleader for the Eagles and Pet of the Month in the January, 1981 issue of Penthouse.
Mortal Kombat's Raiden was based on One of the Storms, Lightning. Three Storms, Thunder (The actor went on to be a Martial Arts instructor for the Hong Kong Police), Rain, and Lightning. When Rain appears, you can hear the rain in the audio.
If you watch the commentary the scene with the three storms first coming in carpenter says "so, I think this is the point where people either decided they loved the movie or hated it" lol, that was kind of crossing the Rubicon as far as opinions went I think
Favorite "storm" is Raiden. Favorite John Carpenter movie is a tie between In The Mouth Of Madness, Halloween, The Thing, and Escape From New York. All of those are top tier imo. Great reaction you two. This film is hit or miss for many people, but definitely a cult classic.
Love the sarcastic humor in this film. I like the action as well. Kurt plays the perfect jerk. Victor Wong is in 3 Ninjas (all four films), John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness with Alice Cooper and Donald Pleasance, The Last Emperor, Year of the Dragon, Shanghai Surprise ( with Madonna and Sean Penn), The Golden Child (with Eddie Murphy), and Seven Years in Tibet (with Brad Pitt). That was a demon sasquatch.
I think the hairy monster guy is supposed to be a yeren. Basically a Chinese bigfoot. What's he doing there? Yeah, it's one of those movies that it's better not to ask too many questions and just go with the ride. LOL
I grew up a couple of blocks from a Chinatown so watching this film as a kid had a huge impact, the younger me was convinced there was sorcerers, weird monsters and kung fu gangsters hiding behind all the restaurants and shopfronts
A favorite of mine. The fast-paced element can make it hard to follow at first, but it also makes it better on repeat viewings because you pick up new stuff every time.
I love how this movie just embraces the weird and doesn't even attempt to explain things. Jack just wanders into the story and then leaves
I kind of feel like that's because Jack's the POV character, and he's too dumb/stubborn to ask what's going on and insist that he gets better explanations. The audience doesn't really fully know what exactly is going on because neither does Jack.

Been a fan of this classic since I saw it in theaters back in 1986. Huge fan of John Carpenter.
This might be my favorite Kurt Russell movie, it's definitely my favorite Kim Cattrall film. And they're the comedic sidekicks.
I think the old Chinese sorcerer was also in "The Golden Child" with Eddie Murphy. It's also a good movie for you to watch!
I second that!
James Hong (Lo Pan) was also in The Golden Child.
@@johnsensebe3153 Really? I don't remember. What was his role?
@@Craudio171 He was with the lady behind the screen.
@@johnsensebe3153 Hmm... I need to rewatch this movie cause I really don't remember him there!
I hope some day yall check out Vampires, another great Carpenter movie.
'Wang' is also in Prince Of Darkness
Ok I figured he was a demon but yes a demon big foot type I can see from older drawings of those from Chinese myth and legends.
I found that whole high school talk at the beginning WAY too cute and endearing for a grown ass man 🤣
In the Mouth of Madness is a great Carpenter flick.
This movie was the Inspiration for Mortal Kombat.
A favorite of mine. The fast-paced element can make it hard to follow at first, but it also makes it better on repeat viewings because you pick up new stuff every time.
lets see how creative we can be with puppets/make-up/special effects etc and then figure out a story afterwards
Found it awesome how she mentioned mortal kombat, after that I was just waiting for the Raiden guy to appear
I absolutely love your senses of humor, both of you. Very great chemistry together.
Thanks so much!
@@YouMeTheMovies The monster looks a lot like the Bat in Fright Nigh 1.....ps said bat going to be in Ghostbusters.....
Fun movie. Always liked the storms as a kid.
One of the Three movies that Gave Birth to Mortal Kombat - Enter the Dragon, Bloodsport, and Big Trouble in Little China 🤘
