I love the behind the scenes info on this movie. It really was just a group of college kids going into the woods to make a movie. They had to put a floor in the cabin, run power to it, it was freezing cold when shooting, they did their own stunts, own makeup, etc…. It was an all around nightmare to film but it’s a testament to what you can do with no money, and lots of determination.

"The Evil Dead" are called Deadites. That is canon from the 1st movie to 3rd to the reboot (which Ash is in) and the Starz Ash Vs series.

  • @pothocket
    @pothocket 2 ปีที่แล้ว +86

Important note about watching second one. The beginning of it is more or less a reboot of the first movie. It's really only when Ash is sent flying through the woods that the sequel actually starts, because that is how the first movie ended. If you ignore everything that happens before that moment it lines up perfectly. You don't have to skip the opening or anything, just keep in mind they're doing a super abridged version of the first movie up until Ash is sent flying through the woods.

    • @victorfatalys1076
      @victorfatalys1076 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I constantlly come across people saying they line up perfectly, but they don't.

eddiejravannen and gordons-alive gave you the answers.
For the third movie, it doesn't start with Ash being praised like in the end of the second movie but with Ash being captured, plus the movie is more comedy than horror, distancing itself from the two other movies, IMHO.
Good thing the TV show was a perfect mix between Evil Dead 1 and Evil Dead 2.

One of my favorite things about this movie was how fucked up the filming process was. Same with Texas Chainsaw Massacre, only for the exact opposite reasons.
In Texas Chainsaw, they had to spend days filming in the house during a big fuck off heat wave. Leatherface and Grandpa had it even worse because the actors were wearing masks. They put up black plastic all over the windows to keep the sun out, which only turned the place into an oven. So while they were sweating like pigs, the food all over the table rotted. So for them it was nothing but hot sweaty claustrophobia and you can't breathe because all you smell is sweat, farts, body odor and rot. When they cut Sally's finger, they accidentally slipped and actually cut her finger. And then Granpa drank it. And the heat, smell, and the sight of blood made Gunnar Hansen who was playing Leatherface get all sex nuts and retard strong. He really got into his role and somehow convinced himself that he was actually supposed to really kill Sally. You know, like, in real life and shit. He did an interview where he said that after having served in Vietnam where motherfuckers were shooting at him, trying to kill him and shit, that being on the set of Texas Chainsaw Massacre was the worst thing he'd ever been through.
Evil Dead on the other hand was fucked up because it was cold. They went out to this unheated cabin out in the woods in the middle of a cold snap. Nobody brought any winter clothes. The only food they had was those French fries, some moonshine, those strawberry daiquiris and a bag of weed. They all got covered in that corn syrup that they used for blood and while that stuff will make you miserable when you're hot, sweaty and sticky, it's even worse when you're cold, sweaty and sticky. So that shit froze to them. Their only source of heat was the fireplace and they were so desperate for heat that they started feeding it parts of the cabin itself. While this was happening, the director would go around, beat them with a stick and yell "Act harder!" I think Bruce was legitimately injured after about the second or third time he got thrown into book shelves. And for that shot at the end, apparently to film it what happened was Sam Raimi grabbed a camera, jumped on a motorcycle, barreled through the cabin and ran right into Bruce's chest, breaking three of his ribs.
Now, a part of these stories here and there is probably bullshit, but I like to think these movies really were that miserable to make.

Yet it's a classic and I can still watch it again and enjoy it as much as the first time I saw it. The camera is used to maximum effect. At one point in the movie Ash hears what sounds like footsteps on the cabin roof. Bruce said in the DVD commentary that the sound was actually Sam Raimi walking around in high heels. My favorite bit of trivia for the movie is in regard to the scene where the cabin bleeds. The entire sequence is an homage to the Three Stooges short "A Plumbing We Will Go"(1940).

Notice how Ash is kinda like the Shaggy to Scott's Fred.
6:57 Notice how Ash isn't good with foreign languages.
8:08 In a certain sense, it's kinda like a portal between two different real-world locations because there isn't really a cellar there. They just dug a hole to represent a cellar so people could walk down into it. Then they filmed the cellar scenes in a real cellar somewhere else (back in Michigan if I recall). Sam talks about it in the commentary.
9:12 Scott's supposed to be the oldest, right? But you're not far off describing him as a "kid" due to the attitude he displays early on. But between him and Ash, he's the more assertive one. Sam playing his switcheroo game, subverting expectations and whatnot.
11:08 They started filming in 1979. Also notice Ash's footwear. Some sort of moccasins. Ash's signature colors (blue shirt, brown pants) were chosen because they're meant to be "timeless" despite the fact that they're ultra '70s.
11:22 There's a story behind that "rinky-dink" trinket and why they specifically chose one with a magnifying lens in it. Bruce and Sam both talk about it in their commentary tracks.
11:40 Notice the different ways the evil "force" reacts to the goings-on in that scene. It's at least mildly excited by Scott and Shelly getting ready to do "the nasty." It reacts with revulsion to Ash and Linda being all cuddly by the fire (typical demon can't get in touch with its soft side since it doesn't have one because it's a chump). And then there Cheryl. Sensitive, artistic, isolated Cheryl. The force goes after her precisely because she's isolated which indicates a tyrannical bullying sort of attitude (again, in keeping with demons being inherently psychopathic).
    12:03 "There's a bad moon out tonight."
13:14 Sam mentions in the commentary that he regrets filming that.
14:24 "I'm sorry. The bridge is out. You'll have to stay the night."
16:13 Scleral lenses made of solid porcelain. They don't make 'em like that anymore.
18:17 Young T.E.D. Raimi fake-Shemping as Scott right there.
19:39 That effect was painstaking. Keep in mind that Sam drew a lot of inspirado from the meticulous and masterful Ray Harryhausen (which shows even more in ED2 and AoD).
23:47 Those low-cut moccasins are NOT adequate for the outdoors. Absolutely NO ankle protection. The hiking boots he wears in ED2 are way better.
24:29 Those are called "it's murder bars." They're painted to look like railroad ties, but they're actually styrofoam or something.
24:39 Notice how Bruce used his "off" hand for that (he's left-handed).
25:38 Keep in mind that scene was inspired by The Three Stooges.
26:19 No, that's just the force messing with him. In the commentary, Sam describes the clock as being like a gauge that shows to what degree reality is being warped by the force. Or something like that.
27:13 Some people are stupid enough to think Ash was pulling off Scott's, uh..."member." Obviously, he's pulling a stick out of Scotty's gut. If there's anything I can't stand, it's people who don't make use of their own powers of observation.
29:36 That's why his home town, including his dad, calls him "Ashy Slashy" in the series.
30:13 They started filming in 1979.
    31:08 Disturbious maximus.
31:55 At least partially inspired by Hitchcock, but amped up to a whole new level.
32:04 Including but not limited to Peter Jackson.
32:28 Ash throwing the book of demented do0m in the fire and making all the deadites rot in hilarious ways.

    "The house is bleeding?"
The Evil Dead series is basically just an excuse for the Raimi bros (Sam & Ted) dousing Bruce Campbell in fake blood and torturing him on film 🤣🤣🤣
Army of Darkness is my favorite of the 3, but I do prefer Bruce in full goofball mode. ED2 also has a lot of good laughs, if you know what I mean 😉
I highly recommend Campbell's autobiography 'If Chins Could Kill' if you're interested in some funny stories about his history with the Raimis.

All I got to say is that Bruce Campbell had better be in the new movie that's about to come out otherwise it's going to suck like the remake does. Hopefully they learned their lesson.
