When people think of this movie they always think of Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster (and rightly so) but i've always felt that Ted Levine's performance as Buffalo Bill is largely forgotten, he had the right mix of clever and crazy.
Yes he really made the character so intriguing not just a serial killer he was intelligent focussed socially able and seemed like he knew what was wrong but it was beyond him he had a goal I would love to know his upbringing like why did he have night vision goggles was he ex military
People don’t give Ted Levine enough credit for his acting here as Buffalo Bill. The way he clearly has to try to control his emotions when Catherine says “I want to see my Mommy,” always gives me chills.
I don't think he's trying to control his emotions - I think he's confused/nonplussed. He's confused by her emotional state because he's a sociopath that doesn't feel sympathy to her distress at all. When he shouts "put the fucking lotion in the basket" he's reached a point where his confusion is bordering on violence and he knows if he doesn't shut her up he's going to kill her to get her to shut up - thus ruining the very thing he kidnapped her for.
@@mnomadvfx I disagree. Bill feels love and emotion for animals as seen by his dog. Hey even had a pet name for his girl dog “poolie poo”. Bill sees his victims as objects. That’s why he kept saying “It” puts the lotion on “it’s” skin unless “it” wants the hose again. He was starting to get emotional when she was pleading for her mother and he looked into her eyes. He started shaking but it wasn’t enough to break him. Bill limits his interaction with his victims to feeding time and lotion on their skin thus avoiding feeling. Now Hannibal and other sociopathic serial killers could be around their victims and enjoy torturing them. They get off on the fear and terrorizing. Bill had only 1 goal of becoming a woman and that’s why Hannibal said Bill killing his victims was incidental.
Fun fact: Jodie Foster said while making the film she tried to avoid Hopkins as much as possible because he was “really scary.” On the last day of filming she told him that and Hopkins’ response was “I was scared of YOU!” 🤣
I also heard (Don't know if that's true tho) that Anthony Hopkins was sitting behind a person at the theater during this movie (screening maybe?) and thought it was funny to say something to scare that person in front of him in the middle of the movie or something... LMAO.... Man, I would have been RUNNING out of that theater!!
Also, apparently the last phone call at the end was unscripted. And since Jodie had such a fear of Anthony, she was legit freaked out when she heard his voice. I don't know if the dialogue that followed was improv or not, though.
@@indy1972 The version I heard is that Hopkins snuck into a theatre that was showing the film after the lights were already dimmed, to follow the reactions of the audience to the film without anyone knowing that a lead actor was there with them. Once the credits rolled, Hopkins leaned over to her and said in his best Lecter voice: "Did you LIKE it?" Then, apparently, there was popcorn flying.
@Michael Shaughnessy TBF Quantico (like many, many others throughout the US) is believed to be derived from an English interpretation (probably poorly done) of a Native American word or phrase (Chicago, Shasta, Tonopah, etc.). Given how little care has been applied to pronounce them correctly over the years, she may well have said it more accurately to its origin; though, admittedly still not acceptable for the modern-day place as it's used. I mean to say, being born in the US doesn't necessarily make us experts at saying these names either, we just get exposed to the more popular ones more, so we get more practice. There's plenty of them that most of us don't hear unless we live near them (within the former tribal/language bounds). Don't worry too much about your pronunciation the first time, there's plenty of people that have never had to say some of these names before, and many of them live in the US, just try to pick it up as you go and you'll be fine.
Winner of 5 Oscars: Best Picture. Best Director. Best Actor. Best Actress Best Adapted Screenplay. It was the first Horror Thriller to win Best Picture! And it deserved to win.
A very clever move from the director was having the actors stare right into the camera/audience. No one teaches that in film school. But it works to perfection here to unease the viewer.
And it is even better because his face gets bigger when the conversation goes on and you feel him in your head like Clarice. The camera work is just incredible in this movie.
You guys should do Michael Mann’s “Manhunter”, which was technically the first Hannibal Lecter movie based on the first novel: Red Dragon. It stars Brian Cox (as Lecter) and William Petersen as Will Graham, the man who caught him. They remade “Manhunter” years later as “Red Dragon” with Hopkins and Edward Norton but it’s nowhere near as good as the original. Also the “Hannibal” television series is amazing and you guys might want to consider that too since it’s only three seasons.
Except they made the MAN save the WOMAN at the end of the MANN film which was the opposite in the book. Plus the MANN film has a neon MIAMI VICE look that becomes somewhat tedious. THIEF and TO LIVE AN DIE IN LA are Micheal Mann's best films but Manhunter is def worth a view.
Lots of people preferred "Manhunter" over "Red Dragon". They are basically the same movie made 16 years apart and most prefer the ending in Manhunter to Red Dragon. Both have recognizable casts.
manhunter is fucking CLASSIC!!!!! red dragon is amazing too and this manhunter is BEYOND UNDERRATED saadly!!! too based off ed gein he inspired ALL cannible films! this texas chainsaw masscre but my fun more beyond underrated but close to reality of ed gein is DERANGED i wish all would seek this b movie truer classic out he wore a put together naked woman suit too he only killed 2 people his mom fucked his head up VERY BAD SADLY!!! a serial kill FYI MUST KILL 3 people or more to be called such! he killed 2.....we used his last victim he gutted as a deer on our bands split black metal album cover titled texas massacre sessions vol. 1. but ed may be a serial killer besides the 2 he killed his brother teased him bad bout fuckin momma why he is mommas boy on thier land oddly he was found in a BURNT CIRCLED BODY BURNED A WOUND ON HEAD AS IF HE FELL! I don't know why! Manhunter fucking sucked! I like Brian Cox in other roles, but he didn't do well Lecter (and I'm not just comparing him to Hopkins, but also to Gaspard Ulliel as young Lecter and Madds Mikkelson from the TV show). Ralph Fiennes was way better than that fluffy haired weirdo from the 80s as Dolarhyde (don't even get me started on that embarrasing In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida scene!). And I know this is an unpopular opinion but I even liked Edward Norton to Gil Grissom as the main character.

Ironically, the actor who plays Buffalo Bill, Ted Levine, usually plays law enforcement officers in roles, he's played law enforcement officers in nearly a dozen different movies and tv shows in his career.
Yep. Played one of the cops with Al Pacino in Heat too. every time I see a movie with him in it- I swear I catch myself saying “Buffalo Bill!” My wife has grown to hate it over 30 years how I just blurt out what other roles someone played when we watch a movie 😂
Fun fact: Ted Levine (Buffalo Bill's actor) had to down some liquid courage before the infamous "tuck" scene. Just thought I'd share that little bit of happiness.
The Hannibal series is an awesome show. It aired on NBC but you wouldn't know it, as it really pushes the envelope beyond the limits for network television.
Hannibal lecter’s debut was in the 80’s movie “Manhunter” which was remade into “Red Dragon” in 2002. I recommend both movies and think it would be cool if you watched both and tell us which one you liked better.
Quan-tee-co. Sounds exotic. I've always liked the entomologists because the one's at least open with their attraction to Clarice instead of just leering at her. The lazy eyed dude went out of his way to shoot his shot and Clarice seemed a bit more charmed by it than an elevator of tall guys undressing her with her eyes or an office full of police officers clearly thinking she doesn't belong there.
I've always believed that a lot of the apparent "weird stares" by groups of men in elevators and waiting rooms is in Clarice's head. She's clearly insecure and uncomfortable around people, especially men, and what we see is often from her point of view even when the camera isn't functioning as her eyes.
And since I’ve seen some reactions to this film, I noticed something I never noticed in multiple viewing throughout the years: the entomologists are at her graduation ceremony at the end!
The lazy-eyed dude, Paul Lazar, has been in a few of Jonathan Demme’s movies: Married to the Mob, Philadelphia, The Manchurian Candidate… just a solid character actor.
Clarice had a tough childhood like a lot of people in law enforcement and it often makes them extra wary. Good observation. I think she idealizes Jack Crawford as a father figure and he and her own father are always portrayed as perfectly decent.
This movie , Psycho , and Texas Chainsaw Massacre were all based off one man Ed Gein. Edward Theodore Gein also known as the Butcher of Plainfield or the Plainfield Ghoul, was an American murderer, suspected serial killer and body snatcher. Born: August 27, 1906, La Crosse, WI Died: July 26, 1984. He even was making a skin suit. He had real bad mother issues
It's actually from the Hannibal film when a corrupt Italian cop tries to collect the bounty Mason Verger put on Hannibal in Florence. Clarice tries to phone the cop to warn him but Lecter, who's tied the cop up and later guts then hangs him picks up and says "Is this Clarice? Well hello Clarice."
Man after seeing you guys enjoy DEXTER episodes and now this classic SOTL... I hope you guys get around to watching HANNIBAL (TV Series). It stars Mads Mikkelsen and his masterful portrayal of Hannibal Lector is not to be missed. Yes, I know most think No one could fill Sir Hopkins shoes, but many thought the same of Jack Nicholson's Joker and we have had two equally great (if not greater) performances of the Joker by both Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix.
@@YouMeTheMovies Hilarious... just got to that part at the end of your video were you mention it. I was not a fan of the other films, but the TV Show impressed the hell out of me.
An interesting thing I've noticed while watching reactions to this film is that a lot of people get concerned about how close Clarice is to the glass. I wonder if the reliance on jump scares in current films have trained people to expect Hannibal to lunge for her.
I always thought that Clarice would have been smart enough to figure out that he was going after the doctor after the “having an old friend for dinner” line.
Good reaction! Hannibal Rising was also pretty good even though Anthony Hopkins isn't in it. It is about Hannibals early life and how he became what he is.
I stayed up late waiting for this reaction. Had a day off today building my man cave and had your reactions on all day. I love the chemistry between you too. Makes me feel like I'm hanging out with you. Love from England.
I know 'Red Dragon' and ESPECIALLY ''Hannibal' are not without their faults, but I haven't found anyone reacting to these films on YT. It would be great to see you guys take on the rest of this series.
There are actually 4 books, and 4 movies. You forgot "Hannibal Rising" which is Hannibal's story from childhood into young adulthood. That one doesn't have Anthony Hopkins though (obviously). It gets overlooked a lot but I personally enjoy it.
I love how every time I watch this movie, I get more out of it. It was part of a directing class in grad school, I taught it for a decade after for both grad and undergrad classes in directing and I still pick up new stuff every time. Great stuff!!!
I always loved the detail that Hannibal makes his escape by asking for a second dinner. I know logistically his first one probably came too early in the day for him to have enough time to execute his plan without somebody walking in, but I also like to think he deliberately stalled waiting for Clarice to come see him one more time.
Such a great movie! It absolutely rocked the Academy Awards, winning the “Big 5” that year. Hannibal and Red Dragon are totally worth checking out! I look forward to your reactions to those films, as well as the phenomenal series, Hannibal!
The movie Manhunter from I believe 1986 was cinemas first introduction to Hannibal Lechter. Very good movie. It was remade later staring Ed Norton it was titled Red Dragon and close to the book.
No offense meant here, but it always amazes me how some of these classic movies have never been watched before. Every time I see a thumbnail for a new reaction and it’s a movie like this or something else that the whole world has already seen, it gives me excitement that you’ll get to experience it for the first time (something we always wish we could do for many things) but it also makes me shake my head hahaha. And that goes for ALL movie/tv reaction channels.
@@Pumpkin3.14pi I noticed some reactors a while back that were totally faking seeing something for the first time. They think they are giving the performance of their lives but I can always tell. Plus, they usually screw up anyway by saying something they couldn't have known without having seen the movie.
Hannibal got ahold of Chilton's pen when the guards were getting him ready to be transported. Right after the conversation where Chilton was telling him about the new deal he got him, when he was eyeing the pen, as he was not yet in the straight-jacket. He had to have swiped it at that time during a moment when the guards were preoccupied with what they were doing.
I liked when all those cops were around as Clarice and company were about to start the autopsy, and she says firmly, "Gentlemen, y'all officers and gentlemen ... get on, now." Being from that region, she knew exactly what they would respond to. I think she was going for the tone and authority kids' mothers would use.
YESSSS can’t wait to watch this. silence of the lambs is definitely in my list of favourite all time movies. everything about it is just great. p.s. james wan just released a new horror movie called malignant and i definitely think you guys should check it out! reviews are really mixed and divisive but personally i loved it a lot :)
I laughed at “She must be Clarice”..”No, I think that’s Lisa” like you laughed at QuanTEEco. That was so funny to me for some reason, Good one Mr. Movies
Entomologist here. We don't all grow moths as a hobby. But in grad school I did do forensic work where you can (to a degree) tell how long a body has been dead by looking at what maggots are present & how old they are. Group I was with worked on one of the cases that was used as basis for 'Dead Man Walking'. Perp (Willie) had a 3-day alibi. But the maggots were 5 days old. You can't grow a 5-day-old maggot in 3. days.
Amazing film. The cinematography is very unusual. The performances are excellent , obviously. It is also quite a good adaptation of the novel. Which is rarely mentioned in conversation , even though it was one of its wins.
Never call yourself an idiot. Always let others do it, so that you can tell them to "shut up." Lecter got the pen when they released him from the security bindings after Dr. Chilton left his cell. He didn't get all strapped up like that again until it was time for him to be moved.
The thing I love overall about this movie is it’s usage of multiple villains in a way that helps the movie rather than holding it down. You see it in superhero movies all the time where the first movie has one villain and then it’ll expand to two or more for sequels and it rarely works as well people would like. This one made it work fabulously. It’s hard to tell whether Lecter or Bill is the main villain, since one drives all the events of the plot (Bill), and one drives all the character development (Lecter). It’s even hard to tell which of the two is scarier, more violent, more disturbing. It ultimately comes down to personal preference. While not talked about as much, Dr Chilton was actually the film’s third villain. He represented all of the sexism that Clarice deals with. Yeah, she experiences some throughout the movie, being one of the first women in a field that belonged to men, but you don’t really see any of the men hassling her about it. They stare at her in lust and sometimes make a few condescending remarks, but none of them really tell her that she doesn’t belong and none of them really try to stand in the way of her proving herself. And then there’s Chilton, who sees her as just a pretty face and a piece of ass from the get-go, condescending to her at every turn, feeling threatened that her star is rising by interviewing Lecter while nobody cares that he’s the doctor of the world’s most infamous serial killer. He even actively hinders her investigation efforts by recording her sessions and blowing the whistle to the senator. So Chilton represents a villain as a personification of an aspect of society. It’s one that he mostly shares alone, as none of the other male characters, even the ones who don’t necessarily show Clarice respect, ever directly try to put her in her place or anything like that. So even in a movie with two serial killers as the main villains, Chilton comes across as the slimiest, least likable character. Even Multiple Miggs had the excuse of being crazy.
I didn't like the Hannibal escape. No way he could have done all that! Just keep him incarcerated. I hope Thomas Harris didn't write that part in the novel. It's pure fantasy!
It is an interesting point as well that Other than the untalented off the top of my head, all the people Hannibal Lecter killed were pretty much scumbags or people who had wronged him or someone else. He really didn't Target the innocent or people who didn't deserve it one way or another.
He did do all of that, and Thomas Harris did write it. Because of how the movie is edited, it looks like his escape happened just minutes after he killed the two cops, but the implication is that at least an hour has passed between when he killed them and when he fired the gunshots that got everyone’s attention in the building. So he had time. The only part that is genuinely unbelievable is that they would leave him being guarded by only 2 cops when he always had a full swat team escort. However, even that is explained in the book, as Lecter guessed (correctly) that since cops are more arrogant than the hospital orderlies, they would forget whom they were dealing with and wouldn’t use full safety precautions with him and treat him no differently than any other prisoner. That’s why he took the chance to arrange the meeting with the senator outside the hospital, in a place where the cops were unfamiliar with what he was really like. It was a gamble, and it paid off.
@TR Hansen it is mentioned (again, this is book exposition) that Lecter is deceptively strong. He would not have needed another person, he hoisted Boyle’s body up with the ribbons you see his arms tied to. And he would have only needed to drop Pembry’s body on top of the elevator from one floor above, drop down to position it, then climb back up. Lecter has dealt with bodies before, he was a solo killer who murdered one of his patients in his office during a session, so he’s an expert at disposal, he knows the ways to move them with minimal effort. He also knows how to gut and skin people from killing and cooking his own animals and from medical practice before he became a psychologist. It is not as far fetched as you think. He would have only needed an hour or so, with his experience.
I also liked how at the beginning she said the moth poster was scary and why she never watched Silence of the Lambs and then afterwards she wants to watch the entire series.
I remember in high school I was taking TV production and we had to be tested with the different kinds of camera shots. They used the opening scene as the subject. The last one is called the establishing shot when they show the building.
This film was just fabulous. To make Hannibal almost the coolest person in the film is talent. Hopkins just chewed the scenery in this. Oscar deserved.
Glad you saw it. One of the very few times a gruesome psychological thriller has won Best Picture. It’s also interesting to note that the delivery straight to camera is a signature of Jonathan Demme’s films and you’ll see it appear again in a very powerful sequence between Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington in _Philadelphia_ .
Most miss it, when they're in the cell and Chiltern leaves the pen, he asks the orderlies to clean Lecter up before his flight, implying there could be a time gap where he's alone in the cell with the pen. This is confirmed as he is wearing a different mask on a different trolley when speaking with the senator.
Thé « Death’s Head » moth on the movie poster is not an actual moth. While the hawksbill (death’s head » moth has markings vaguely like that of a human head, the moth in the poster contains a photographic image of a work called In Voluptas Mors, taken by Philippe Halsman and arranged by the famous Spanish surrealist painter, Salvador Dali. The « skull » on the poster is actually formed by the naked bodies of seven female models. Perhaps related to that number is that, during the timeframe of the movie, Buffalo Bill had supposedly killed seven victims.
Silence of the lambs is based on the novel by Thomas Harris Hannibal is the sequel ( same author) Red Dragon is the Prequel to Silence of the lambs ( novel introduces Hannibal lecter), Hannibal Rising ( book& movie are about The young Hannibal Lecter) Manhunter ( movie) which came out in the 80s was adapted from Red Dragon (novel)
14:2738:37 If you zoom in on the "skull" on the back of the moth on the poster you can see it's not really a skull at all: it's seven women posed nude to _look_ like a skull, cropped from photographer Philippe Halsman's surrealist work "In Voluptas Mors", staged by and featuring Salvador Dalí. A little tip of the hat to Buffalo Bill's true goal.
This movie swept the big 5, picture, director, actor, actress & Adapted screenplay & Jodie was actually pretty big. This movie was her 2nd oscar. Her first in 88 for The Accused
Best reaction to this film i have seen. You guys are awesome. Hubby so cool not giving hints, and props to you for working out the reason buffalo bill skinned women
@@The3rdGunman Do. I was unsure at first, because I love the books and the movies -- what more is there to say? But the TV series is its own thing, and all the actors are great.
Another little fact.. the actress who played Catherine Martin played Detective Green in the show Bates Motel. Which is one of my top favorite shows. It's so underrated. It's just great. Maybe give it a watch. You wont be disappointed trust me!
Manhunter (1986) was the first adaptation of Red Dragon. It's good and Brian Cox plays Hannibal. It has a great noir feel to it. Red Dragon only slightly surpasses it for me due to Anthony Hopkins' portrayal. The Hannibal tv show is fantastic!
Yeah, but if they want to continue the Anthony Hopkins portrayal, the next movie's got to be Red Dragon. It might still be worth also watching Manhunter after completing the main Hopkins' Hannibal trilogy though, as it's own completely separate movie, which Manhunter is (in both it's different tone and character portrayal).
But this movie is not scary, it is hilarious. Not sure how anybody can watch this movie and not laugh a lot. The scene where Bill abducts the woman when he is moving the couch is one of the funniest scenes ever filmed. Just the stupidity of the woman is pure comedy gold. I honestly think this is one of those movies you can show to people, and instantly find out how good their sense of humor is, because people with a sense of humor will laugh a lot watching this movie. One of the best people I ever heard talking about how funny this movie was, is Patrice O'Neal. I remember always thinking the movie was hilarious, then I came across him talking about it on the Opie & Anthony show, and it was like he was inside my head, because everything I found funny about it, he did as well. I am not sure if they did it by accident, or on purpose, but the movie really is hilarious. It is almost like they want viewers to find it funny.
Breeding exotic moths is a pretty common hobby, not just among serial killers :-D Especially 'silkmoths' - like the Luna moth, Cecropia moth and Polyphemus moth that are all native to the US - because the adults don't feed so they're really easy to deal with. Look them up, they're really beautiful. The species in this movie is Acherontia styx (in Europe we have a different species called Acherontia atropos, or the death's head hawkmoth), and that skull shape on its back is a real thing.
Great reaction you two as always. It always trips me out how there are still some who’ve never seen this film masterpiece or seen it fully from beginning to end even though references to it pepper pop culture & our lives. Anyway, there was a great point you two brought up at around @36:44 about how Clarice Sterling (Jodie Foster) “held her own as a woman in a man’s world.” This was a fabulous & important point. Remember this film is from the wonderful 1990’s or 1991 to be exact before agendas, activism or propaganda pervaded media or movies. Clarice didn’t fall into the “damsel in distress” trope or the now common & unrealistic archetype of the “girl boss” which we have jammed down our throats or hammered over the head with incessantly. Clarice is like a female archetype of the masculine “strong & silent type” but without being manly while retaining her feminine core. It’s more subtle & realistic which makes her not only more believable but endearing. She is a strong woman who adapts & overcomes. She is smart but also physically strong, resilient & resourceful. She’s way more likeable than say, for example Brie “Look at Me, I’m an Unrealistic Captain Marvel Girlboss” Larsen who you just get🤢🤮 about. She is a great female role model who overcame childhood traumas & phobias To excel academically & become a highly capable & respected FBI agent. Author Thomas Harris developed a great fictional character in Clarice & Jodie Foster absolutely crushed it in her role bringing the character to life screen. Jodie is a badass herself in real life. So anyway, it was an astute observation you guys brought up & I think important at a time when things such as gender, tradition, gender roles, feminism, etc are such contentious issues currently. Ne c’est pas? 🙂👍
I absolutely loved mindhunter! I went into it last year with no knowledge of it & when the last episode finished & didn’t continue to a 3rd series I was absolutely gutted! Such a great show , definitely need to rewatch it at some point. I love true crime so it ticked all the boxes for me!
You will enjoy the rest of the movies, especially Red Dragon. While Hopkins' performance was iconic in this movie, in Red Dragon, his acting is a bit different. He does maintain his overall demeanor, but he is much more vicious and vindictive and less flirty and romantic. Which fits honestly considering the story of the movie.
I would love to see two react to "Hannibal" the series. Mads Mikkelsen does an excellent job as Lector, as does Tom Dancy as his protagonist pre-Clarise. It's a damned shame it only lasted three seasons.
Great reaction, you guys! Love watching along with you. I am a big fan of the other two Hopkins films in this series… some people might tell you to skip them, but if for no other reason, watch Hannibal (film) for the locations (I won’t say anything more about that)! And they’re both good movies (Hannibal and Red Dragon). Until the next video! Have a great week!
Amazing reaction video as always from both of you guys. I highly recommend hannibal and red dragon. Silence of the lambs is one of my favorite films ever.

One of my college professors was an entomologist. He is one of the smartest people I ever met, and he was a badass. He was a paratrooper in World War 2, even though he was all of 5 feet tall and weighed maybe 100 pounds. He crossed the Elbe river in 1945, and fought the Germans for 48 hours straight, before having to retreat. He never acted like a badass, but he would not have made it through paratrooper training and the war if he had not been one.
Alex Forrest - Fatal Attraction Catherine Tramell - Basic Instict Hannibal Lector - The Silence of the lambs Mickey - Natural Born Killers Daryll Lee - Copycat the amazing and complex killers of hollywood that were scary, interesting, and we love them every minute. I kinda enjoy more Hannibal in Tv show, because we saw him in most normal and playing this hide and seek game. While Anthony´s Hannibal enjoys playing with his victims, and have a satisfaction in his face...Mads´s Hannibal needs to hide that (obvious is a different character in different periods of time). Yeah everyone always talks about Hopkins, and I'm like, what about Ted Levine? Hee hee, he had to take a shot before his dance routine💖
People don’t give Ted Levine enough credit for his acting here as Buffalo Bill. The way he clearly has to try to control his emotions when Catherine says “I want to see my Mommy,” always gives me chills.
he should have got an oscar for supporting actor 100% he was magic.
He did an AMAZING job, underrated performance, Hopkins and Foster were great of course but Levine, yeah.
I have always said this. One of the greatest characters in a film ever.

Once the credits rolled, Hopkins leaned over to her and said in his best Lecter voice: "Did you LIKE it?" Then, apparently, there was popcorn flying.

That "Quanteeko" opening cracked me up!! Another great reaction, thanks y'all.
such a great start, lol
It made me think of the Beach Boys: "Key Largo, Quantico, baby, why don't we go..."
Is she more from the western U.S. where the Spanish language is more prevalent? Then that would make sense.

A very clever move from the director was having the actors stare right into the camera/audience. No one teaches that in film school. But it works to perfection here to unease the viewer.
Makes you wonder why more movies don't do that. When this film demonstrates how to do so effectively.
And it is even better because his face gets bigger when the conversation goes on and you feel him in your head like Clarice.
The camera work is just incredible in this movie.
Yeah, it gives us a great perspective of what our protagonist (Clarice) feel and see. It's like you're there. Truly amazing.
And keep the budget within bounds. It's all about the actors and the script. POV is everything.

+1 William Petersen is fantastic in 'Manhunter' (1986), and Brian Cox as Lecter was very good as well :)
And a cool soundtrack
Except they made the MAN save the WOMAN at the end of the MANN film which was the opposite in the book. Plus the MANN film has a neon MIAMI VICE look that becomes somewhat tedious. THIEF and TO LIVE AN DIE IN LA are Micheal Mann's best films but Manhunter is def worth a view.
Gotta agree with you. Sir Tony is definitely the best Hannibal, however, I would definitely argue that "Manhunter" is the far better film.
👍
Lots of people preferred "Manhunter" over "Red Dragon". They are basically the same movie made 16 years apart and most prefer the ending in Manhunter to Red Dragon. Both have recognizable casts.

Anthony Hopkins is legendary. Definitely one of the greatest actors of all time. I own about 40 of his movies.
Watching Manhunter nowadays it seems like William Petersen must've been the first actor they wanted to play Grissom in CSI

I've got to be honest, although I love Anthony Hopkins I think I prefer Brian Cox's take on Hannibal. It's more understated and to me more believable.
Brian Cox is great as Hannibal and so underrated but Anthony Hopkins is better as Hannibal, in my opinion.
Jodie won an Oscar for this but also won the year before for The Accused (1988) which I think is her best performance of her two Oscars,
Silence of the Lambs came out in 1991.

Silence of the Lambs is easily in my top ten movies of all time. It had such a profound effect on me when I first saw it in the theatre.
Clarice had a tough childhood like a lot of people in law enforcement and it often makes them extra wary. Good observation. I think she idealizes Jack Crawford as a father figure and he and her own father are always portrayed as perfectly decent.

An interesting thing I've noticed while watching reactions to this film is that a lot of people get concerned about how close Clarice is to the glass. I wonder if the reliance on jump scares in current films have trained people to expect Hannibal to lunge for her.

I did not know this for years, but the death's head moth on the movie poster is like six naked women in pose of a skull.
...which is from a classic photograph by surrealist Man Ray, in the 1920s-30s.
There are actually 4 books, and 4 movies. You forgot "Hannibal Rising" which is Hannibal's story from childhood into young adulthood. That one doesn't have Anthony Hopkins though (obviously). It gets overlooked a lot but I personally enjoy it.
It was decent and deserves a watch, imo.

The movie Manhunter from I believe 1986 was cinemas first introduction to Hannibal Lechter. Very good movie. It was remade later staring Ed Norton it was titled Red Dragon and close to the book.
They changed the ending though. Will does not come out in good shape haha.
Brian Cox played Lecter in Manhunter.

The Hannibal tv show is well worth watching to see how he was before he was captured👍

@@TeenTyrant He would have needed all day and at least another person helping him to do all that. He was not Superman. LOL

19:48 Hannibal nearly ruined his escape plan because he couldn't resist making a sick joke.
Worth it
The Michael Scott of serial cannibals
Silence of the lambs is based on the novel by Thomas Harris
Hannibal is the sequel ( same author)
Red Dragon is the Prequel to Silence of the lambs ( novel introduces Hannibal lecter),
Hannibal Rising ( book& movie are about The young Hannibal Lecter)
Manhunter ( movie) which came out in the 80s was adapted from Red Dragon (novel)
14:27 38:37 If you zoom in on the "skull" on the back of the moth on the poster you can see it's not really a skull at all: it's seven women posed nude to _look_ like a skull, cropped from photographer Philippe Halsman's surrealist work "In Voluptas Mors", staged by and featuring Salvador Dalí. A little tip of the hat to Buffalo Bill's true goal.

I'd highly recommend the show 'Mindhunter', sadly only 2 seasons, but great all the way through with some amazing performances.
Hugh Dancy
Love that "Super..." sticker xD
You two make a great couple. I can see you have a good connection. Hope you have many years of happiness together.
Thank you. We are very happy together :)
Nice work! A lot more "Oh No!"'s for the compilation! Lol
See you next Monday!
Cheers.
Quan-tee-co 😂😂😂 that cracked me up
Great reaction, you guys!
19:10 Hannibal didnt get the pen. He realized the warden left it on his bed.
Y’all should watch the Hannibal series with Mads Mikkelsen!! Yes!!
Quanteekoh was hilarious! At least she knew what Quantico is, which is ahead of the curve.
Buffalo Bill's creepy basement had more rooms than a hotel.
Great reaction! And reading the comments is helping me prep for an epic re-watch of everything Hannibal, film and tv. I wonder where the new 'Clarice' series fits into it all.
08:09 😂😂😂
You cracked me up wow
It’s so rare someone cracks me up
I thought when you saw it you were disgusted but then you just came out with she got crazy cmmmmm 😂😂😂😂😂
Is crazy cmmmm different lol
One of my college professors was an entomologist. He is one of the smartest people I ever met, and he was a badass. He was a paratrooper in World War 2, even though he was all of 5 feet tall and weighed maybe 100 pounds. He crossed the Elbe river in 1945, and fought the Germans for 48 hours straight, before having to retreat. He never acted like a badass, but he would not have made it through paratrooper training and the war if he had not been one.
A 5 feet paratrooper in WWII = Pretty close to the PERFECT paratrooper in WWII.
Great reaction btw xx
Alex Forrest - Fatal Attraction
Catherine Tramell - Basic Instict
Hannibal Lector - The Silence of the lambs
Mickey - Natural Born Killers
Daryll Lee - Copycat
the amazing and complex killers of hollywood that were scary, interesting, and we love them every minute. I really enjoy Starling, because she is genuine terryfied of him... but still she holds her ground playing a game she knew it was dangerous.
Omg you have to watch the show Hannibal! It's amazing!
