I am not sure how long these (simple) metal clamps will last down there with water, heat, dust etc.

I bought enough of the carbiulders heat shields for my vx commodore v6. I need to wrap around the headers but should I put the shields hard onto the headers? ( basically wrap them? ) or do I put spacing of 10 mm approximately in between? Reason I'm asking? It's so much easier to wrap and shape, and lock it off? But I'm not sure if I should gap then away from the exhaust manifolds? Any reply appreciated. Cheers
