I was just saying that last night. I told my wife that I used to save up $4.00 to go buy sheet music, and now I can go online and play an actual song with the chords moving along, stop the video, see the chord more in detail, play with actual artists from TH-cam videos, all for free (or some variation of "free" - we pay for something somehow I guess). I've learned more from TH-cam tutorials than I could locally. No comparison. Just an incredible way to teach and to learn.

I also played guitar for years as a child and I also quit because I got frustrated. Now I'm 24 and I started again. So many people on the internet can explain it so much better than any of my teachers. And now if I don't feel like playing for a week I can just not do it and I don't get that look of disappointment because I didn't practice. The internet is such a wonderful thing. Though, I wish there was some kind of platform where we could easily find all of these good videos in a structured way. I accidentally came across this video, and I'm sure there are videos which I should see but I don't know about them yet.
Yeah mate spot on me too, I Played for years, had lessons practised heaps. Slowly slowly I made progress but stop for 20 years because of frustration and timing issues. Picked up the Guitar about 4 months ago turned on the "internet" and wow guys like this have helped me progress 100 times faster. Also I have been learning full songs, chord progression etc then finding the BPM with drums only and my timing is the best its ever been. I just turned 50 wish we had the internet back in the day. Never to late I suppose. Cheers from an Aussie living in Turkey. Happy playing people :)
Thank you for this! Your explanation was so clear and simple. After my brother passed away last month, I developed a passion to start playing the guitar. He was amazing at playing, it was a natural gift for him. I know I have musical gifts too and maybe I can take on and continue the guitar gift that he had. I don’t have a guitar and can’t afford one, but last night when our church was empty I took the guitar and strummed however I could. I can’t explain the feeling of joy that filled my heart. It felt natural, like the guitar just belonged on my lap! The sound was so beautiful I fell in love! Ah, maybe some day I will be able to have a guitar but right now I am preparing myself and learning so I am a little more ready. Again, thank you! Truly amazing video and first one that opened my mind to understand what’s going on with the frets and notes.

A way I remember that B and E have no sharps is this little saying someone in my guitar class at my highschool came up with. “There BE no sharp” Read it as if you were a pirate.
I learned more in 10 minutes learning the notes just one string at a time and applying that formula than I have in 25 years of playing guitar. For the last few days I have been searching around and people are trying their own way to explain it and it just never clicks with me so thank you.
Very good. I'm 70+ and have played for myself most of my life. I enjoy singing and it was a vehicle. I had always assumed it was too complicated to learn. Since retirement, I've played more than ever. That and choir membership have given me general musical knowledge. I just took a whole course with the worst theory teacher EVER. I learned more from Steve in 10 minutes than in 6 weeks of lessons. What the hell! Some people are great teachers like Steve, and some are just good musicians who know nothing about actually helping people to learn and retain information.
He's a good communicator first and foremost. He could probably explain the quantum theory of light better than those useless profs if that was his field.
Well that's quite unfair. You spent 6 weeks learning, then came here and "learned" more. You probably already learned a lot and just with time came into the understanding phase

My first introduction to guitar came from a man who broke into my house and fell asleep on my couch, drunk and lost on his way home. I found him one morning in too embarrassing a position to do anything about it, and I'm glad I did, because his way of apologizing came in the form of teaching me some guitar lessons when he saw I had one. Bless his heart, but it didn't quite get into this. He went over "Do re mi fa so... etc.," and where that is on the frets, which turns out to correspond with the above video without even knowing the exact notes, but along with chords and some right-hand techniques I never understood WHY the sounds worked where they were until watching this. The simple, easy to understand explanation of the rules here just put into perspective for me so many years of blind, if still very joyful, noodling around without much direction or comprehension. I feel like I've just had everything click and am fully on a new page with my playing quite literally in a matter of minutes. THANK YOU!!!
At the age of 60, I’ve just started to learn the guitar. This video explains a lot and clears up some of the mysteries for me. I’ve played the piano and keyboard at different stages, so have an understanding of the notes and octaves etc. When thinking of individual notes I always have a picture of a keyboard in my head which helps me. Thank you for the tips you’ve given. Great video 👍

I've seen a lot of different methods for learning this, the biggest thing in my opinion is to just make sure to think about it every day. Just visualize your fretboard when you're bored at work/school, when you're in bed at night, etc. Don't wait until you have your guitar in your hand every time to practice this.
I paid for a course on memorizing the fretboard and worked on it for months. You just explained it better in this video than that entire course ever did . Light bulb moment. Thanks much
My apologies for commenting again. This is just mind blowing for me. I’ve always enjoyed playing according to what sounded correct, but I had major issues with learning theories because I can only learn with “photographic” memory. If I read a theory on a book, I cannot understand it - my brain doesn’t register it. It’s very frustrating and it probably doesn’t make any sense, but what you just showed made sense for the very first time in so many years. I just wanted to thank you again for giving me hope and making me pick up my guitar again. Thank you! You’re by far the best guitar teacher on here, as well as the most genuine person. 🤘

I tried a few different Methods and then came across THIS Method of Steve's. Hands Down, this is the BEST way to learn the Fretboard. It works! After using it for awhile, all of the Accidental Notes simply filled themselves in and I learned them without even trying.

I've been trying to learn to play guitar by myself for about a year now, today it occurred to me to check "how does the fretboard work" and my mind has been completely blown, now i feel like i can make it.

I took up guitar a year ago, "instructed" by I/N videos and printed media. This video was a true "Eureka!" instant. At my stage of struggling with learning all the fretboard notes, I realized that the next stage of my learning must be: Before learning the note you're playing, learn the note's OCTAVE PROGRESSION up and down, across and back the fretboard. Since I started a year ago, I recall reading and seeing videos that stressed that intervals are as important as notes. It just started to make a lot more sense. Thank you Steve.

The young lady in the picture is my Foster Daughter. I'm 68 years old. I have learned to play individual songs. I know about 30 or so but everything I play is through memory by ear. I wish I had known about you and your methods of teaching a few years back. You, Mr Stine are what I would consider to be a great communicator. wow. amazing! i picked up a guitar on monday this week, got put in quarantene tuesday night and have spent countless hours practicing. when i was younger i never understood. today my daughter of 10 years told me i should learn the notes, tomorrow i'll be able to show her what i learned. i would have never dreamed i could learn the guitar. now i m learning dust in the wind, chords and notes amazing work thank you Steve, and team i guess
This should be the first lesson on a guitar. funning thing is i have been doing this exactly... not as easy as is sounds, been working up and down every string, forward and back, than try doing it with your eyes closed... and then skipping around strings. than try to hear each note on each string... do it one hour every day. I think this is the most important thing you can learn if your a beginner.. than write it out on musical notation all mixed up, and play it,,,, if you can get to the point you can do it all easy,, your one hundred times ahead of everyone else that's learning. it's not easy,, still working on it.... Oh yeah one more thing, on a 24 fret guitar C can be played in twelve positions.. on a piano with 88 keys that is 4 different C locations. Middle C on a Piano can be played in 5 positions on a guitar. See this image of guitar in musical notation... visualguitar.com/ I had to come back and add this because it can be very confusing.. a 24 fret guitar in can be played in 4 different octave ranges. Meaning the vibrations/sound waves of each individual note can be four different wavelengths. However just because there are 4 different octaves does not mean they sound the same, they are just vibrating the same. For instance C at the 5-3-5 position and 6-8-6 position are the same octave, but do not sound the same on a real instrument.. But on MIDI they do sound the same, which is why tabs in the same octave sound so bad on a computer but completely different on a real guitar.

I also played guitar for years as a child and I also quit because I got frustrated. Now I'm 24 and I started again. So many people on the internet can explain it so much better than any of my teachers. And now if I don't feel like playing for a week I can just not do it and I don't get that look of disappointment because I didn't practice.

Though, I wish there was some kind of platform where we could easily find all of these good videos in a structured way. I accidentally came across this video, and I'm sure there are videos which I should see but I don't know about them yet.
Yeah mate spot on me too, I Played for years, had lessons practised heaps. Slowly slowly I made progress but stop for 20 years because of frustration and timing issues. Picked up the Guitar about 4 months ago turned on the "internet" and wow guys like this have helped me progress 100 times faster. Also I have been learning full songs, chord progression etc then finding the BPM with drums only and my timing is the best its ever been. I just turned 50 wish we had the internet back in the day. Never to late I suppose. Cheers from an Aussie living in Turkey. Happy playing people :)

Thank you for this! Your explanation was so clear and simple. After my brother passed away last month, I developed a passion to start playing the guitar. He was amazing at playing, it was a natural gift for him. I know I have musical gifts too and maybe I can take on and continue the guitar gift that he had. I don’t have a guitar and can’t afford one, but last night when our church was empty I took the guitar and strummed however I could. I can’t explain the feeling of joy that filled my heart. It felt natural, like the guitar just belonged on my lap! The sound was so beautiful I fell in love! Ah, maybe some day I will be able to have a guitar but right now I am preparing myself and learning so I am a little more ready. Again, thank you! Truly amazing video and first one that opened my mind to understand what’s going on with the frets and notes.

This guy is an incredible teacher.
A way I remember that B and E have no sharps is this little saying someone in my guitar class at my highschool came up with. “There BE no sharp” Read it as if you were a pirate.
I learned more in 10 minutes learning the notes just one string at a time and applying that formula than I have in 25 years of playing guitar. For the last few days I have been searching around and people are trying their own way to explain it and it just never clicks with me so thank you.

Very good. I'm 70+ and have played for myself most of my life. I enjoy singing and it was a vehicle. I had always assumed it was too complicated to learn. Since retirement, I've played more than ever. That and choir membership have given me general musical knowledge. I just took a whole course with the worst theory teacher EVER. I learned more from Steve in 10 minutes than in 6 weeks of lessons. What the hell! Some people are great teachers like Steve, and some are just good musicians who know nothing about actually helping people to learn and retain information.

Getting back into guitar during quarantine, watched many TH-cam tutorials..but this is the first video where mind is *blown*

My first introduction to guitar came from a man who broke into my house and fell asleep on my couch, drunk and lost on his way home. I found him one morning in too embarrassing a position to do anything about it, and I'm glad I did, because his way of apologizing came in the form of teaching me some guitar lessons when he saw I had one. Bless his heart, but it didn't quite get into this. He went over "Do re mi fa so... etc.," and where that is on the frets, which turns out to correspond with the above video without even knowing the exact notes, but along with chords and some right-hand techniques I never understood WHY the sounds worked where they were until watching this. The simple, easy to understand explanation of the rules here just put into perspective for me so many years of blind, if still very joyful, noodling around without much direction or comprehension. I feel like I've just had everything click and am fully on a new page with my playing quite literally in a matter of minutes. THANK YOU!!!
At the age of 60, I’ve just started to learn the guitar. This video explains a lot and clears up some of the mysteries for me. I’ve played the piano and keyboard at different stages, so have an understanding of the notes and octaves etc. When thinking of individual notes I always have a picture of a keyboard in my head which helps me. Thank you for the tips you’ve given. Great video 👍

I've seen a lot of different methods for learning this, the biggest thing in my opinion is to just make sure to think about it every day. Just visualize your fretboard when you're bored at work/school, when you're in bed at night, etc. Don't wait until you have your guitar in your hand every time to practice this.

My apologies for commenting again. This is just mind blowing for me. I’ve always enjoyed playing according to what sounded correct, but I had major issues with learning theories because I can only learn with “photographic” memory. If I read a theory on a book, I cannot understand it - my brain doesn’t register it. It’s very frustrating and it probably doesn’t make any sense, but what you just showed made sense for the very first time in so many years. I just wanted to thank you again for giving me hope and making me pick up my guitar again. Thank you! You’re by far the best guitar teacher on here, as well as the most genuine person. 🤘

I tried a few different Methods and then came across THIS Method of Steve's. Hands Down, this is the BEST way to learn the Fretboard. It works! After using it for awhile, all of the Accidental Notes simply filled themselves in and I learned them without even trying.
I’ve used fender play for the past few months and didn’t really understand what I was doing til I found this channel. God bless, what a goldmine.

I took up guitar a year ago, "instructed" by I/N videos and printed media. This video was a true "Eureka!" instant. At my stage of struggling with learning all the fretboard notes, I realized that the next stage of my learning must be:
Before learning the note you're playing, learn the note's OCTAVE PROGRESSION up and down, across and back the fretboard.
Since I started a year ago, I recall reading and seeing videos that stressed that intervals are as important as notes. It just started to make a lot more sense.

I was just watching Rick Beato's video on how to learn the fretboard. Now, I love Rick's videos, but I was lost and got nothing after watching his video for five minutes. This video came up in the sidebar so I clicked on it. After 5 minutes of watching, I'm following along without any problem and am already learning valuable, clear, easily understandable stuff. i picked up a guitar on monday this week, got put in quarantene tuesday night and have spent countless hours practicing. when i was younger i never understood. today my daughter of 10 years told me i should learn the notes, tomorrow i'll be able to show her what i learned. i would have never dreamed i could learn the guitar. now i m learning dust in the wind, chords and notes

This should be the first lesson on a guitar.
funning thing is i have been doing this exactly... not as easy as is sounds, been working up and down every string, forward and back, than try doing it with your eyes closed... and then skipping around strings. than try to hear each note on each string... do it one hour every day. I think this is the most important thing you can learn if your a beginner.. than write it out on musical notation all mixed up, and play it,,,, if you can get to the point you can do it all easy,, your one hundred times ahead of everyone else that's learning. it's not easy,, still working on it.... Oh yeah one more thing, on a 24 fret guitar C can be played in twelve positions.. on a piano with 88 keys that is 4 different C locations. Middle C on a Piano can be played in 5 positions on a guitar. See this image of guitar in musical notation... visualguitar.com/ I had to come back and add this because it can be very confusing.. a 24 fret guitar in can be played in 4 different octave ranges. Meaning the vibrations/sound waves of each individual note can be four different wavelengths. However just because there are 4 different octaves does not mean they sound the same, they are just vibrating the same. For instance C at the 5-3-5 position and 6-8-6 position are the same octave, but do not sound the same on a real instrument.. But on MIDI they do sound the same, which is why tabs in the same octave sound so bad on a computer but completely different on a real guitar.
