For me so far this year what I have been learning to improve as a guitarist: 1. Learn songs- start to finish, intro, chorus, solos, etc. 2. Master the neck- scales across the neck, patterns 3. Chord progressions- learn how to play I-IV-V using barre chords 4. Phrasing- legato, bends, vibrato Good video Steve and thanks for the tips and motivation as always. I found to break down practice into shorter more frequent daily sessions more effective at least for me than one long session. Focus on one thing. Play SLOW to a metronome until you work up speed. Start 50 BPM and once playing RELAXED controlled and effective bump up another 10BPM. Soon you will be at 120BPM.
So crazy it's like you know me and you don't even know me everything you said in your video is like right where I'm at right now you're freaking amazing bro!!!
Learning in bite size increments & then applying what I learned has really helped me. I think we all try to cram to much in at once. Being patient is important. And make sure you have fun, cause that is what playing guitar is all about.
That's the thing I'm having difficulty doing, but I love to practice, I practice every-day for 3-4 hours a day... I see notes in my dreams, maybe I need to put it down one day, and play it.
Very deep advices about our guitar journey. One other element that motivates me is material: I love to understand how my guitar works at a mechanical level, and improve it, or see how a different instrument gives me different ideas.
just started watching your videos and finding them very informative.I have wanted to play all my life,i have owned many guitars, electric and acoustic.I taught myself to read sheet music,i can count note times,i know the notes on the guitar neck,i know most all the major chords,i know a few scales but i can never seem to put it all together...Strumming is something i just cannot get down,i get frustrated, quit for a few years and try again, quit and try again. I have tried tablature but nothing ever seems to come together.I just don't think i have the ear other rhythm coordination to learn.I won't quit, hopefully someday it will come together. Thanks for the videos
I really appreciate these videos dude I've been playing for 27 years but I just never knew the theory and all the technical shit until recently but in the last few years I've really been following you and Jake Lizzio who's also amazing my point is I really appreciate all the advice that you're putting up in these videos 😎
Real nice tips!!! I´m having guitar classes and I´m at this moment that I learn a lot of things and don´t know how to use it. Maybe I should tell my teacher to slow down, so I can memorize better the topics and learn how to use them. Thank You!
Finding the right teacher that fits where you are, and listens to you is the key, for sure. I learned a long time ago that being a teacher (Professor, Montessori educator, and private and group guitar instructor for years) is that it's never about me and my agenda, because everyone is completely different, so the key is listening to each person and what they want/need. Good luck!
I had the same thing happen to me but then I asked a fried of mine for lessons but spaced them out every 3-4 weeks depending on his touring schedule. It gave me time to absorb and actually practice what he taught me. That has helped me a lot!
Thanks, Steve. Been super busy lately but thanks for giving out this video. Really helped me a lot in my guitar practices, especially the visualization part. I put down my guitar like 4 days in a week so I don't really have that actual guitar practice, but this really works.
exceptional !!! great videos , right on point and informative , excellent teacher and superb guitar player ... i've learned more about music and guitar in the last week than i ever did before in my whole life .... very inspirational and educative , from the smaller details to the complex stuff ... fantastic .... thank you !!!!!
Can u make a video about some of those cross patterns as you said? I think they can really help when learning the scales .. well I have another question , what is your tip for learning dominant 7 chords and all the inversions? How can I use all the inversions not only 3 of them (I mean when improvising in 1-4-5 progression).. Thanks for your great content
Hi Steve. I really enjoy your videos. Very very helpful. But I'm wondering, unless you've already made one, a video on left-hand heavy metal muting? Like when I'm trying to do some single note melodies, I always seem to get unwanted string noise, especially with high gain going. Again, thanks for your videos man. They've helped alot.
uhm hi im going to graduate high school this school year and im wondering, should i go to a music school or should hire a music teacher to pursue my guitar skills or can i do both? thanks a lot for this video im starting to take my guitar talent seriously lmao i copied and take down notes on my notebook so that i wouldnt get lost !!! thanks a lot steve ! \m/
Need advice bro, i practice /play my guitar for 20-30 mins and rest for 2,3 months, even dont bother to look at,so how do i improve my guitar playing habit everyday?
Always have it where u can see it. Commit 5 mins to your guitar. Thats it. Youll find youll practice more than 5 mins and even if it is just 5 mins, better than nothing.
Out of all of your great work I will have to say this was the worst. I normally would say it was a good video. You are always long winded but over the last few years you have taught me a great portion of my overall guitar experience and I thank you for for it. Again I am great full for all of your work, time and help. Please try to be a little less of a speaker and more of a teacher. If this comment seams long well, it is. I’m not sure as to be short myself without being rude and I definitely don’t want to sound rude. Keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing more of what you do best. Thanks again for everything.

Words of wisdom, Ray.
I hope you make a million because you are by far the best guitar teacher in the world
Ha! That's very kind of you. I don't see that happening in the near future, BUT if people are learning from them, that's ok too :-)
That's the thing I'm having difficulty doing, but I love to practice, I practice every-day for 3-4 hours a day... I see notes in my dreams, maybe I need to put it down one day, and play it.
I feel that lol sometimes that happens to me when i overdose on a game
You're the best, Steve!

Yeah, it's amazing. I've been playing for over 34 years, and it still never ceases to inspire and amaze me as well.
These are 5 great points your hitting on, thanks for sharing
