  • Clive Wearing has an extremely rare permanent amnesia, he hasn't formed a new memory in over twenty years! This is a true story, and it was very eye-opening and interesting to watch, but also quite sad.

This is the real story of Clive Wearing. Clive is a British former musicologist, conductor, tenor and keyboardist who suffers from chronic anterograde and retrograde amnesia.Years ago, he caught a very common and relatively benign viral disease called the Herpes Simplex Virus. Yes, the cold sore virus. The severe complications that happened weren't quite as harmless, though. The virus passed through to his brain and caused retrograde and anterograde amnesia. He has no short term memory and no long term memory. He hasn't formed a new memory in over 20 years at the time of this documentary. He has total memory loss and everyone around him tries to cope with him not remembering anyone or anything ever. In his words, "It's basically like being dead." He is unaware of anything that isn't happening in the present. He forgets anything that happened to him in, at the most, thirty seconds. He has total memory loss and this is one of the saddest stories I've seen in a while. I don't think I needed to one-up the Smooshi and Tilikum Marineland / Seaworld video so soon, but here we are sadly lol. Sorry to ruin your day, hope you get some value out of this:)

He must be the happiest man alive, that's for certain.
Just those who are around him, might feel differently.

You think not being able to remember anything and living life in fleeting moments of confusion sounds happy? I think it sounds like hell.

      @@Ithoughtthiswasamerica I don't, no. :)
If he "wakes up for the first time", then it's difficult to imagine becoming upset at such a state of affairs.
That is ALL that he is aware of - along with of course other aspects associated with his talents, those he recognises (whom of course he'll have a strong connection with - provided that he himself, had no latent sense of disharmony with them, _before_ he lost his memory...if that were the case, then I imagine he would either hate the sight of said individual, or simply not have a bond with them... and of course that in turn, would mean that - say - if it were his wife, then she would just be a stranger the next time he saw her "after waking up for the first time").
In other words, he remembers her, because he has an *emotive* connection with her, and the (real) memories he has with her. You can't break a bond.
That's why I don't believe that his life would be a living h*ll...
Certain preconditons would need to be met first.

He must have some kind of emotional memory as he cried nonstop for the first month and half however now he only gets angry about his condition when asked. So his body must recognise what’s going on

But he is only there when the memory and taking is there.... We or I am only there when memory is there... Otherwise we do not know what is there.... It might be that though his body is awake he might be in a deep sleep state and in that deep sleep state we or I or memory is not there... So while he is sitting there he is coming into being awake because memory and the person arises from that deep sleep state.
