Josh, I'm sitting on the fence for this one, Kermits singing this live while playing a banjo, maybe edges Karen, I'd have to see Karen sing it live while drumming to give it to her. Tough one to call for me.
Not much drumming I don't know if it'd make a differnce....unless they added more.
The lush strings are almost singing the song for him, and the arrangement, with those wrong chords at the right time, keep it sad and wistful. Meanwhile, his “conversational” nerdy voice and the banjo provide a nice upbeat amateur-hour conflict with those strings. It’s like we’re watching the musings of a non-professional, and we can hear the lush but poignant arrangement in his imagination.
Karen, of course, sounds smooth and perfect - and the toy piano at the beginning provide the roughness... until Richard Carpenter turns it into lush on top of lush, and the Carpenters version becomes almost too perfect, like a variety show arrangement. I still love theirs too though.
Oh ya Karen’s one is good too but this is all my man Kermit. I loved hearing him sing as a kid.

You should review the Willie Nelson version, where he's in a park, and it's just him and his guitar. I thought Willie had written the song, as it's the type of lyrics he would write.
