There are soooo many videos on Dahlias, but yours is the best! I have been searching for replanting from pots for months...until I found your video. Thanks so much- you have have a great voice and personality for doing these videos.
I tend to pinch my dahlias way earlier in their growth. As soon as I get three sets of leaves, I wait until I can grab the tiny stem in between the top set of leaves with my fingers and break if off. This greatly reduces the time that the plant wastes on the growth which will be removed anyway. I literally only have to remove about an inch.
This year is my 42 growing season of having my own garden. I've been growing dahlias for about 25 years now. I love those amazing showy blooms. Dahlias are one of my favourite flowers to grow. Recently I've been sharing tubers for quite a while and this year I actually sold some here in my small mountain village where I live in a small cabin next to my large garden. This year I have 155 dahlias in the ground. I've never pinched the tops, but that is a good idea for stockier plants and more blooms, as you say. My dahlias are generally tall and most often need staking so when the plants are heavy with blooms they don't just fall over. I've tried several methods of support and I'm always trying new ways, all trial and error on my part. I'm no expert, by any means, and I've made lots of mistakes with my plants over the years. Last year I grew around 15 varieties of dahlias and I'm always keen on trying new types. Like you say, dahlias begin to bloom around mid-summer and last until frost, so they are generally a magnificent flower to grow and enjoy. With the number of dahlias I grow, deadheading is quite a big job but worth the effort. Lots of colours, shapes and sizes in the dahlia family, that is for sure. I've really enjoyed watching your videos and seeing your garden grow. I've also learned from you and as a gardener I very much enjoy seeing how other gardener's grow things and how things are organized and displayed. I live alone now but I am always bringing flowers from my garden in so I can enjoy them even more. Thanks again for sharing your videos and knowledge. You do a great job. Cheers!
Lovely video! Just one thing: Dahlia cuttings do indeed root - and not only that, they root fast and easily! I usually cut the tip back to a leaf node and stick it in a pot with well drained soil: growth starts usually within a week. Try it!
As a young homeowner, the very first plant I grew in my garden was dahlias. I grew them from seed, nurtured them lovingly and planted out the seedlings in a carefully prepared bed. Slugs gobbled the lot. Bas***ds!! It left me broken. 😄😄
I got re motivated and cut mine back even MORE after watching this...Cafe Au Lait blooms in mass is the hope. Adore all your postings. Watch them here in Windsor Ontario with antipation and appreciation of your expertise , tips , photos and correct pronounciation of the English lamgauge as well ! :)
Hi, I wondered if you could do a video or explain when and how and with what you stake your dahlia's. I don't see any of the stakes in your garden on the dahlia's. I will be planting dahlia's for the first time in my garden in Brooklyn so they all will go in containers. Thank you, I'm really enjoying your videos and allotment!
I bought way more than I should have, considering it's the first time I've gotten any. I too started mine in garden center pots I save, I'm glad you showed planting them, I wasn't really sure how to go about it, they have grown nicely in those pots. Now I just need more garden space...sigh...
Really fabulous and helpful video - thank you SO much for sharing your knowledge, it's much appreciated. Happy gardening! Only four days to go before 'British Summer Time' begins.
A little late in watching your videos, I am catching up though. I was really interested to see that you pinch out the tips of your dahlias. I didn't know about this, Katrina, so thank you for teaching me something new today My favourite dahlias are the singles and particularly the Honka variety. I love the star-like flowers and so do the bees. The dark one "Verrone's Obsidian" is my absolute favourite. Love your videos!
All of your flowers and vegetables are just stunning. It amazes me how neat and weed-free your beds are. You work very hard at it I’m sure. ❤️ Blessings!
great video, thanks for sharing especially your knowledge on pinching out the top. This si my forst year growing dahlias and I was concerned that it may be too late to pot them up and should just put the tubers straight into the ground, but now I know to relax I still have a few weeks!!!
I have grown loads of dahlias from seed this year and in pots you would be proud! I was planting them out today too! I have lots of bishops children, dwarf mixed, fireworks, bishops llandraff, coccinea, cactus. I have been planting them around other plants but an tempted too strip the bed of all other plants and give them plenty of room. I've been planting between a few roses, apple trees and on top of daffs lols
I love your blog! Because of you I’m growing dahlias this year. And I pinched them! I wanted to tell you I just saw you on Gardeners World and you were great! I’m so proud of you.💕
Thanks so much for this. I'm growing dahlias from seed for the first time this year. Great explanation and demonstration for pinching out. I always used to get confused as to how it gave more flowers. It was only when I read that the lead stem sends out a chemical signal to suppress flowering on any side stems that I realised why it works. By pinching out the lead stem you effectively create two more lead stems. The absence of the chemical signal from the original single lead stem stimulates flower growth in these new ones.
this was a very helpful video for me. i watched it some time ago, but don't recall commenting. i am going to try cosmos for the first time this year, so that part was very helpful too! 🙂thanks for the information and the video. 🙂
Great video! I’ve just ordered tubas - including wizard of oz - definitely interested to see how you stake or what framework you use - I need to prepare!
You are so beautiful and lovely in your garden. QUESTION: How often do you pinch them off please? Just once in the growing season? Thank you kindly! Ashley From Canada!
Thank you for your detailed video on dahlias, my favourite for pots is Totally Tangerine and for the first time in 10 years of growing dahlias I am growing Cafe au Lait after watching your video on them last year. I can’t wait to see how they get on. I’m a bit worried now tho as 2 are in the ground and I have planted one it a pot! Oops! X
Lovely vid...i find with the weird weather this year everything is so late growing. My dahlias are much like my hostes full of holes ha.. plenty of snails..
Put a circle of copper wire at the base of each plant the slugs cannot cross it .You can also put an old butter container inn the ground and fill it with cheap beer the slugs drown in ecstasy 🙂
Only recently found your channel🤩. That was so interesting and gave me so much more confidence when doing this thanks for sharing take care cheers from Australia 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
The strawflower bed is going to be INCREDIBLE this year 🥰 I can not wait to see it in bloom with that combo. 💗🌸🌼🎍💗 Your plot is looking heavenly. So excited for the next garden tour!!!
Looking forward to seeing your display :) The pompom and cactus types in bold red and pink colours are my favourite flowers ever, I think. My gran grew masses of them when I was a child (and still does) and I remember being amazed a flower could look so magical! Try as I might, mine get eaten by slugs every year. But I keep trying.. I've planted a load in containers at the back of my flower bed this year rather than putting them in the ground, surrounded them with beer traps and nematodes. They've got a few holes but haven't been demolished so far, though with all this rain we're getting I'm worried I'll go out tomorrow and they'll be gone!
Thanks again for another great video, you make it so easy for me to follow along with you, 6 dahilias started in pots, now ready to pinch out including Wizard of Oz. Please could you let me know where you found your fab watering can? Would you ever consider a opening day?
Thanks for the great video! I bought a pot from the store that has lots of blooms. When should I re pot it into a larger pot? After the first round of blooms, should I pinch them too as you did in this video?
Thank you so much for making this video! I wasn't sure how to go about pinching the ones that are currently making shoots now, as well as how and when to plant them. I have noticed though that the first dahlias I purchased a few months ago have yellowing leaves and malformed flowers, and I can't tell from my research if it's a fertilizing issue or an overwatering issue. Do you have any advice for how to get them green and healthy again? Can't wait to see your dahlia displays this year! Your videos showing them off are what got me into growing my own this year. And all of your dahlia care videos have been super helpful!
We planted just one city light lavender pink dahlia from a nursery pot in early April in North Carolina. After the 4 blooms died off, the plant grew wider and wider with no new blooms but lots of green leaves. Filling up the spaces in our butterfly garden. Don't know if we should trim back some of the green leaves or wait and see what happens. It is now early summer and temperatures have reached 85-90 degrees on some days. What do you think we should do? We are fearful it might take up too much space. Thanks
Hello I have a allotment and my partner wants to start a plant area with some. Ice colour, the Dallas look nice do you know of anywhere in Nottingham you can but started plants or did you start all yours from seed?

Thank you, great vlog, very informative, especially the pinching out of both the dahlia and cosmos to make them bushier. Just wondering if you can use the pinching out method on marigolds too? 😊
Bishop of Canterbury Dahlia. Love your Dahlias. A very professional video. Great time to publish straight after gardeners' world. Could you do a video on growing your squash just like the Dahlias?

So this is what Lara Croft does in her free time :D I finally got a garden! I can't wait to start putting your tips into practise!

Know nothing about plants. Just love your videos and enthusiasm. 👍
Well you must have learnt something by now 😂 Thanks for watching all the same.
What are those cute little white, daisy like flowers growing on the edges of your raised bed!? X
Erigeron karvinskianus, it's also really easy to grow from seed
I love dahlias too and I'm growing some from bulbs.
Happy birthday blossom. That was beautiful to watch 💐
you can also do a vlogging day , doing all your garden chores , weeding, planting etc. love your channel😁
As a young homeowner, the very first plant I grew in my garden was dahlias. I grew them from seed, nurtured them lovingly and planted out the seedlings in a carefully prepared bed. Slugs gobbled the lot. Bas***ds!! It left me broken. 😄😄
York & Lancaster is a red/white striped dahlia I love. Plus Clarion: pale yellow single flowers over dark foliage. Hope yours thrive!

That's interesting, i have very tall Dahlias, and they constantly fall over after rain or a slight breeze, ill give this a go when they come up.
Your dahlia displays are always the best 🤩 I am excited
Ahh that’s so kind, thank you 🥰
Couldn’t you pop the cuttings into some soil and creat more plants? The more the merrier!! 💜Well answered that straight away! 😂

Love this video. Thanks for showing us how it’s done.

Oh yes, never ending story with the snails and slugs. 🙃
Excellent video …. Again:) The timing was perfect as this is the first year I’ve planted Dahlias on my balcony and they seem to be thriving.
Your plants are so cool

Great
As usual a great video, the only thing is you dont do that many of them now.
Great video Kat, really wish i could hire you for an afternoon to come sort out my friends garden in Melton lol :P x
It takes courage and knowledge to do those cuts because I was pitting the little trees xD
Hi would you plant Dahlias in terracotta pots
Yes
see you next time
Excellent 👏👍🌹
Would you plant two cafe au lait tubers in a 12 inches w x 17 inches h in a clay pot? Or would they get crowded? Ty!
I would stick with one. Cafe au lait need the room.
@@homegrowngarden omg I soooooo appreciate your response!!! Thank you 🤗
Do u have to pull up dahlias out of planters for winter if you take them inside
No
you can stick the bit you cut off in a glass of water and it grows roots, free plant :)

Just wait as pruning now could delay further blooming. Some varieties of dahlia can reach 5 ft tall.

What to do with tubers with no stemms had fiew this year. They have roots but no spuds :(
I think i might just fall in love...
Interesting thank you 🧤👒🐨🦘🇦🇺🌱
You are mean and greedy with a smiley face pinching out all the tender plants 😂
Slugs are the enemy
I've read that they are eatable. 🤔 Have you ever tried to eat them? I wonder how they taste. Does anybody know?
I lost all but 7 of my dahlia collection.
Bishop of Canterbury Dahlia. Love your Dahlias. A very professional video. Great time to publish straight after gardeners' world. Could you do a video on growing your squash just like the Dahlias?
Ahh good choice. Those are such an intense pink! Thank you for your kind feedback my squash are already in the ground so it could be a bit late!
Look.you
Hello beautiful
How did you stop yourself from burying your face into that fat dahlia bouquet? WOW it was beautiful.
