- Today we will cover all the stages for potting up dahlias for an early start and how to protect them from the slugs and snails. There are many different methods for this process but this is what I’ve found works for me and brings me the most incredible dahlia displays each season.

Live in zone 7b. Got a gift of one dahlia left over from a bag a neighbor bought at Costco. Placed it in the ground in a small spot, not knowing anything about dahlias, nor what kind I had. With no help from me, it grew and grew, until it needed to be staked, and then opened absolutely gorgeous orange and yellow blossoms, that were breathtaking. I moved it to a larger spot in the fall. Didn’t know whether that was a good time or not, but I did. It came back the following year, growing around a trellis this time, and was a knockout. Looked it up and it’s called Explosion. I was in love for two reasons, one, deer and rabbits don’t eat dahlias and we are home to herds of both, and, second, they require me to only put down slug stuff to keep them looking fantastic. Bought some at Lowe’s, some from White Flower Farm, and some from a family owned garden center. They grew beautifully, weren’t eaten, and every one but two of them came back. I also do not have to lift them in the fall because of our very moderate winters. The selections are beautiful, they are showy and easy, and are not dinner for deer or rabbits. A really great plant.

We are the same zone, less bunnies because lots of foxes but hungry deer has wiped out entire gardens in our street. Your experience with Dahlias mirrors mine, they are heaven sent in a flowerless garden 🌻🌻
@@anastasiabeaverhausen5467 We have a fox family living a few blocks away in an old rock wall. They give me hope for some kind of balance with the rabbits. People living closer than I, have seen a big decrease in rabbits. So far, they haven’t touched my yarrow, which does come in a wide variety of colors and forms, nor have they touched my dwarf pugster blue butterfly bushes. I took out half of my hosta and planted hellebores instead, yellow flowers, that seem to last for more than a month. Good luck with the wildlife.

I’m afraid they receive no such consideration from me. I’ve got several old kitchen knives scattered around the garden specifically for chopping them in half! May sound cruel but if they’re not going to be ‘taken to a woodland somewhere’ a swift end is probably the best thing I can offer them.

I’d love to hear how you decide where and how to plant your dahlias! The more I’ve got over the years, the harder it gets to decide how to “organize” them throughout my gardens and I don’t have a quarter, if not less than that, than you!
Oh, okay that might be something I could show in a future video but to be honest I have so many that it involves spreadsheets and printing pictures so that I can see it all visually (that's how I work best). Glad to see someone else from Canada here who loves Dahlias too. I'm from the Niagara region in Southern Ontario, Zone 7b and it still gets too cold here in the winter to leave my dahlias in the ground. This is my first year being able to successfully have tubers that survived my overwintering. I'm very excited and hopeful that everything will go well.
Sounds brilliant - you're so lucky to be able to leave them in the ground. Any that we leave (by mistake) never make it through the winters because our soil is too heavy. 😕

I enjoyed this video. I have huge tubers I’m afraid to try cutting on, but they’re too big to fit in pots so I put them in grocery bags with a little potting soil until I can plant them outside. I’m going to try cutting them now that I’ve watched your video.

How did you do splitting your tubers?
I am happy you talked about dangling/broken neck tubers so detailed. Lots of people don't know, they are no good tubers if they are dangling, and I have the feeling that companies often use that missing knowledge to sell their dahlia 'clumps' , because it looks like you get lots, if they leave the dangling ones on.. But you actually don't 😕

Hi Judit - it can be so disappointing when we receive clumps with loads of broken tubers but I always try to salvage at least 1 tuber from the clump and then I know it'll grow into a beautiful plant.
Gosh, no, it'll be a while until they're blooming - the clips on the video are from previous summers. It's still rainy and miserable and pretty cold here! 😊
@@cottoverdi Oh yes I know, it was just an ironic question to show how impatiently I am waiting for them to bloom. I know the weather, I am getting the same weather system at the moment here in Germany as you do up in the UK... Sooo cold and rainy! But going up here from the weekend 🤗

Thanks Annette, for your clear advice regarding hardening off. I followed that last year and while it was quite a task taking them in and out of the greenhouse each day, they did really well all summer and I had no frost damage.

This was a very helpful video Annette. Thank you. I got caught out as I didn't lift my Dahlias last year and they've all rotted after the long spells of rain. Thankfully I didn't have too many so it's not the end of the world. Normally they come through the winter as I give them a good mulch. Looking forward to seeing yours in bloom later in the year. I've told other channels about your wonderful display.

Thank you Annette, this was very helpful. I am trying to grow dahlias for the first time. I have 11, and 7 of them are shooting at varying heights. I do stress about the 4 doing nothing, especially as they are the ones I really wanted, Cafe au Lait. Just hoping I’ve not watered them too much and they’ve rotted, overwatering being my problem! I am going to try putting the ones with shoots outside for a few hours a day and put them back in my small greenhouse at night. All seems very scary, but you made it seem not quite so scary. Lynn
Hi Lynn, that sounds great - 7 showing signs is excellent. It's best to only water them once, when you pot them up, and then don't water again until they are shooting and the compost it dry. Let me know if you have any other dahlia questions - I'm always happy to help. Good luck 😊

Glad it was helpful! Yes, absolutely, dahlias can be grown in pots. If they are tall, they will need staking but other than that, they should be very happy in pots too.

This was a fantastic video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I’m in Canada, zone 5 and have over wintered my tubers in cool basement. This year I’ll attempt putting some in pots for the season and placing around garden (as I’m running out of viable space with sun). Others will go into a galvanized trough which I used last year and it produced the most magnificent blooms! Question - if planting in pots what soil would you recommend? Gillian in Ontario
Hi Gillian, thank you. Dahlias like being in pots - they may need staking if they are tall ones. I just use ordinary multipurpose peat-free compost in my pots. I do add a slow release fertiliser and will be feeding them at least once a month with a liquid feed. Hope this helps. Have fun in your garden! 😁🌸
Hello! Just watched your video beginner guide to potting dahlias, so much information thank you. I am in Oregon and so much rain this week. Should I wait to plant tubers in ground until not so wet? I’m s beginner and planning on planting a few in pots and about 6-8 in ground. Just don’t want to get tubers to soggy as to not grow.
Hi Nicole, as long as your ground isn't flooded and drains fairly well, then the tubers should be ok to go in the ground, but do make sure that you're past your last frost date because that could cause more damage than wet ground. Good luck. 😊
Wonderful video with impeccable timing! First time Dahlia grower here, and I've been waking mine up in canvas grow bags for weeks now in zone 10b!
I've just gone out today to inspect them a little closer, and I've found suspected gall on a few. I'm learning some hard lessons getting started, such as where I aquire my Dahlias in the future... So these videos with such wonderful through explanations are very helpful.
When you plant them in the ground do you toss any Epsom salt or bone meal in the bottom of the holes first? I'm sorry if you said and i missed it.

When we plant them, we add a multipurpose plant food - just a sprinkle - into each hole. We use a product called Growmore - it's a granular feed.
Beginner here, found your video so informative and helpful; looking forward to growing my knowledge, so will definitely be seeking out any other videos you've made. Recently helped someone replanting out some dahlias; oh that they were in the lovely condition your plants were (I will be striving for that next year, now that I can see how they should look and be treated). When a 'bulb' has broken or fallen off the tuber mass is there anything that can be done with that bulb? - can it grow anything, can I do anything to save it to give another plant? Many thanks.
That's brilliant Linda, so glad I could help. If one of the tubers falls off the bunch, it is just a storage device for food for the plant. The only time it is worth keeping, is if it has an 'eye'. Without the eye, there will be no shoots or flowers. 🌸

I love your video and learned a lot. Thank you very much! I have one question for you: I live in zone 6b and left some potted dahlias outside last night. The lowest temperature was 36F. This morning, I noticed that some of them had their leaves turned black and soft and sad. They're about 1 inch tall. However, those over 4 inches tall, their leaves were still green and firm and happy. Do you think that the sad ones will survive? Of course, I'm not going to leave them outside at night anymore until it's warmer.
Thanks Leiya. I hope your dahlias were ok? Sorry I didn't;t manage to reply to your message sooner. If they got hit by the frost and the leaves look a little crispy or damaged, don't despair! Honestly, put them somewhere warmer until they make new leaves and they will be fine. The real problem with dahlias and the cold is that if they get too cold, the tubers can freeze and this causes ice crystals to form and breaks the cells of the tubers and then they become all mushy and then there's no saving them at this point so do try to make sure they don't get too cold. The damaged leaves were still black and soft. So I cut them to allow the energy from the tube goes to the new shoots. Can't wait to see the flowers. Wish your garden doing great as well!🥰

Yes, they all go in our garden - we have 3/4 acre and lots of space to fill!

Gosh, did they survive? No, definitely don't dig them up! If you have soil that drains well and it didn't;t get too cold, then they've probably survived. 🌸

What a fantastic video. How do I stop earwigs from eating my dahlias?
I recently learned to put some Vaseline around the stem so they cannot climb up to the flower. Also, sluggo plus takes care of slugs and earwigs. It's organic approved. I believe the newer versions of sluggo needs to be watered in to activate.
We can also try using upturned pots on stakes near the dahlias - fill them with straw and the earwigs will crawl into them at night and then you can dispose of them in the morning. I haven't tried this but lots of dahlia growers use this trick.
@@cottoverdi Maybe we should try all organic methods to make sure that our beloved plants make it. I'm an herbalist, so no crazy (non-natural) products in our house or garden. I'm the one that mentioned Vaseline. I had to go buy it just for the dahlias. Hopefully, a little smear with my finger around the upper stem when I really want that bloom will be ok with mother earth. But I'm going to try your straw trick. I'll just turn them upside sown for the chickens in another pasture. One more farm chore to add to my list. We also have sheep, goats, llamas and beehives on 23 acres.

❤ Why do you store the tubers upside down?
Hi Katherine, I store them upside down just incase there is still any moisture left inside the stems, then it can drain out. If the moisture is left in there while they're in storage, then they are more prone to rotting at the crown.
