Just FYI, It would be fine to plant them sideways. Sometimes tuber clusters have a lot going on, and the shoots will always figure it out and make their way up. Also, if you're making a big investment and planting a lot of Dahlias starting them in trays can make sense to ensure they are sprouting normally before putting them in your soil/garden bed. On rare occasions Dahlias can carry a bacterium/disease called leafy gall. Starting them in trays you will avoid contaminating your garden bed with gall, as it can spread to other healthy stock.
Hi, thanks for the video. I planted some dahlias in Northern California and it was quite warm. I saw some sprouts but they seem to be turning brown and dying back. I don’t water it much at all. Any ideas what could be happening?
Dig into the soil a bit and make sure it is definitely dry. If that's the case, you may be watering too little. Sprouts will need more moisture than established plants.
Ok I know this far fetched but you sent my tubers and the box got set aside. They’ve been sitting for awhile and the tubers are bit shriveled. Should I still try to plant them? Soak them first? I am in central Florida 10b or a I forget. I can also do them in pots to avoid monsoon summer rains.
Can you please tell us why you hate tomatoe cages? I do use them, as an adjunct to staking, I find both together are good. But you seem really imformative, and I value your opinion
For indeterminate tomatoes, cages are just too small and flimsy. For some determinate varieties, they CAN work but are usually still too small. A roma can easily way outgrow a cage. They can work nicely for tomatillos though!
I bought some dahlia plants that are bushy and blooming. How do I plant these beautiful flowers that will thrive? I am in zone 8 but feels like 9 some years. The temperature was 110 last year and I don’t think they can handle the extreme heat.
I potted up 4 small containers with very healthy tumblers Watered them once They've been in pots for 3 weeks inside Still no sprouts So yesterday I dumped them out to kind out what was going on The tubulars were still nice and solid But no sprouts I did the exact same thing 4 weeks previously to these No problem are now moved outside and growing very well What should I do with the ones that never sprouted TY
For a Southern California city with 70-75 F degree days in the winter, would planting in September (80-88 F) degree days) be a no go? Thank you so much!
They don't mind heat once they're established. We plant them in the spring, but I'm curious to see how they'll do! It might not give many blooms this year, but you can leave them in the ground over the winter.
I live in zone 10. I planted already flowering Dahlias in the spring, they were beautiful. Now in mid-summer, the plants are still growing, but not flowering. Could it be that I keep them in a relatively shady spot? How much sun is recommended in a very hot climate?
They do want several hours of full sun per day. They can handle a good amount of heat, but some desert areas (eastern California, Arizona, etc.) might be too hot
Hello. New dahlia grower here 😊. I am from Northeast India and we get monsoon rains from may to sept. I just potted some dahlias on my containers and they have sprouted beautifully. I wanted to ask if it is safe to put them on the ground taking on consideration about our climate.
Hmm. Sounds like it could get really wet, but it also depends on your soil and how much is holds onto water. You could also try some in the ground and some in pots to test.
My mom loves your videos Can you put Hindi subtitles she tried to watch your videos with auto translate but they are not accurate lots of love from India 🇮🇳🇮🇳💕💕
You have no idea how much I appreciate you and this video. You are helping me make my dream come true!
Thank you for the tips! I would have totally broke them up and lost them all!!! Also thank you for the watering tips!
perfect timing because mine are being planted today. So excited.
Just planted the tubers I ordered from you! So excited!
Just ordered mine! Woohoo! Such beautiful flowers, thank you for this info.
Yay! What varieties did you get?
When are you able to sell dahlias tubers again in San Diego?
I was thinking the neck is the skinny part next to the bulb's body en then de eyes is what you need intact 🤔

Hi, I just found your video. How often do you water your dahlia’s?

hi. thanks for sharing an informative videro. i want to ask what's the consistency of your soil & do you fill the pot with it?

I live In Hershey Pa
I plant ranunculus in the fall in the same spot I grow my dahlias. Do you think my dahlias will rot because I water my ranunculus in the spring?
For a Southern California city with 70-75 F degree days in the winter, would planting in September (80-88 F) degree days) be a no go? Thank you so much!

So many say to have the stem slightly showing. I'm confused.
When is the best time to plant dahlias in zone 10?
The spring. They should be established before it gets really hot

Should they be mulched?
Is it too late to plant tubers in Zone 10b? I was just given a bunch a bulbs and Im not sure if i should wait until the fall. Thank you!
You should still be fine to plant them if you have the space, but do it asap
