Section A: 0:00 - 2:21 Section B: 2:21 - 2:59 Section C: 2:59 - 4:02 Section B: 4:02 - 4:41 Section A: 4:41 - Section A The C♯ Locrian mode is used, giving us a very dark start. The very brief presence of an F (in the last part of the motif) suggests even Super Locrian. The piece does not hesitate to announce its distance from the major scale, by introducing both C and G with a C♯ bass -- C and G make for two very dissonant intervals with C♯. Further on, G♯ and D♯ is introduced, to bring the piece to Aeolian, a slightly brighter and more familiar mode (the harmonic minor to A). A two-chord progression emerges, by alternating between the submediant (sixth; in this case A) and tonic (C♯). However the A chord is also altered to the Dorian mode, which is decidedly less dark, but still nowhere near anything as bright as the Ionian (major). After this, the whole piece so far is repeated, but with percussion, to give us a sense of time, pattern, and consequently a feeling of groundedness. Section B, C By cleverly using G as a common note, the piece suddenly transitions from the Super Locrian to the Lydian mode -- one of the brightest modes. This happens by treating G as a diminished 5th to C♯ in Section A, giving it a Locrian "taste", but as an augmented 4th in this section, thereby giving it a Lydian one. This section starts also with a two-chord progression, by transposing the C♯ chord down to A. Later F is used, which firmly establishes the piece in major. The progression during this time is also one that is rising, from D♭ to D♭ on F, and finally G♭. Multiple occurences of C - D♭ in the violin can also be heard (Section C), giving a sense of a leading-note resolution - a rising resolution. All this in general (not to mention the registers used, and the sparse composition) helps to promote a very light and airy sense to this section. The piece then gradually steps down by replaying each successive motive but backwards, and we are then brought back to the dark Locrian mode of Section A. But at the very end, the piece resolves to Lydian as the notes to introduce Section B -- this time at a much higher register -- comes back.
I never thought reading an entire analysis on one of my favourite soundtracks would both amuse and educate me. The music student in me appreciates this.
This song almost makes me cry. Makes me think about all those hours I've spent playing this game during my young adulthood. The world seemed magical and the possibilities endless.
Imagine being in your early twenties playing this. I miss my twenties. Shit my 30s are almost gone. They certainly don't make games like they used to. My dreams of a real simcity game like simcity 4 deluxe edition are basically gone. Haha... the arrogance to think we could get a simcity game on a modern console. Shit I cant even get another elder scrolls game before I'm 40. It's absolutely terrrrrrrrible. I got 3 yrs and it prolly won't happen. 9 yrs between titles is an absolute disgrace. epkaz93 one of the awesome things about isometric 3D view city builders is the developers ability, if the give a shit and know what they’re doing, they control what we see and how we see it. Allowing them to really make some incredibly powerful atmospheric milieu, and experiences in-game.
Ahhhhh..... I just spent an hour on here looking for this one song. I swear when those violins hit in that triumphant moment I get chills and it brings me back to being a kid. My cousin and I used to let this song play in the background while we had battle scenes and went crazy. Talk about good memories.
The first time I loaded up this game and listened to the first part of the piece I was genuinely scared a ghost or something would come out of my computer, but I loved it as soon as it switched keys to a more cheerful tone in the 2nd half. Now it's one of my favorite pieces and I keep coming back to it.
The start of this song used to make me feel uneasy as a kid, it made me think of being lost in the middle of nowhere, or the wilderness; which was a big childhood fear of mine.
I'm pretty sure the soundtracks of SimCity 3000 and 4 have been licensed out for use as general background music for other media. For licensed music, they're pretty dang good.
It's likely that this track is using licensed/royalty free samples that other composers/shows then used. You can hear the same samples in this song in the King's Row theme from overwatch, just in a different key.
What an awesome track. You can tell that every element of the music was thought out. Every string, every percussive beat, every voice so well done, damn!
This song reminds me of how I spent hours upon hours playing this game in the early 2010s, when I was still a kid. The soundtrack will always have a special place in my heart.
Why this music is the only one of the entire soundtrack that’s not in Spotify?! This music is truly amazing. It’s a piece of art! It makes me sad that EA ignored this one when they put the whole ost at discord
@@Edax_Royeaux I just finished watching the "Through the Looking Glass" episode when I heard this and thought, "Wait a minute... I know this!!!" and found my way here. Love Farscape! Haven't played Sim City 4 in ages, but the soundtrack always stuck with me.
I just found out that the starting reverse-riff part of this song is actually a stock sound effect. You can hear it in the Freelancer soundtrack in the Omega Space Suite. I was blown away when I first heard it because I'd played both games in my childhood, but I never got far enough in Freelancer to hear it.
The song you are thinking of is by a group called Delerium, started by Rhy Fulber from the industrial band Frontline Assembly. There are some really good songs in the same vein as the one from the old TR movie.
It's a term originally referring to thin wooden or metal slats that are curved. Reticulation refers to an arrangement into a pattern like a net. So basically, "reticulating splines" means "arranging lines into a grid".

yeah, I kept hearing the middle "happy sunny afternoon" bit and wondering which song it was. I thought the intro was good for working to, and I found out they were the same song! Amazing how it goes from haunting electro to uplifting new age just like that!
I see the similarity but I'm neither convinced nor would I be disappointed, really. The "opening" sound/idea recurs throughout the song. It's a pretty fully fleshed-out idea in this Simcity 4 track. No mere copy and paste.
heavenly background and the rhythm which reminds me of big city makes it a great music... makes me imagine a city within beautiful landscape being created from zero, just like cities in the game.

Tandem You can still achieve everything u ever dreamed. Do something radically positive.
Haven't played Cities: Skylines? Granted it doesn't have quite the charm or as good as music as sim city 4, but as a city builder it is unparalleled

This is my favourite SimCity 4 song. Starts off so eerily, then dramatically changes.

Lol yeah, the first minute was always really creepy sounding to me.
i think its probably my fav simcity 4 song. and one of my favorite all-time songs too
This comment is basically as old as me lmfao
I didn't even played this game, still, great song
This music is one of the reasons that made me stayed in god mode for an hour...
For anyone here from the Freelancer soundtrack, you're right! The instrumentals are very similar to the Omega Space Danger suite!
i was just thinking this too
one of my favorite songs from sc4... memories man
This is used extensively in all episodes of Most Haunted.
LOL
I wonder if they got permission to use it? I remember hearing it on one of the shows and was like, "WTF this from SimCity!!" xD

listening to this brings back so many memories this was one of the second games my grandmother got me for my birthday i miss her so much
Even for today Sims city 4 seems to be the best city simulator for PC gaming. This game is just master piece despite it's flaws
Starts and ends a little like Primordial Dream
Yes, thats what made this song a little work to find. Had no freakin idea it would be called terrain. How boring.

Got to hand it to The Humble Brothers for composing yet another godly track.
My fav SC4 track! I used to put this track on my playlists for other games or even on traveling CDs. It set the right atmosphere for Sim City as well
This is the game's true theme song. This track and Arctica are next level.
i'm always instantly reminded of the tomb raider movies because of that sample

Yeah this was used in most haunted, also it was used in the TV series Farscape
"Hello, and welcome to Most Haunted..."
This one and Electric City are some of my absolute favourites in The Sims 4.

2020 and i'm stuck with nostalgia
at 2:44 it gets good. It makes you feel all relaxed an think about how beautiful the world really is. At least for me it does.

Omega danger battle music in Freelancer!?
Same sample. It can also be found in Tsukihime Remake alongside others.
2:47 I like this part, when everything gets happy
“Welcome to Most Haunted. I’m Yvette Fielding.”
The beginning of this sounds like the Omicron Space theme from Freelancer.

This song makes me feel like some kind of awesome earth god, raising mountains and shaping the landscape as I see fit
I'VE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH THIS SOUNTRACK!!!!
This is the most heard song on tv, movies, etc., etc., out of all SC4 track demos that I’ve heard.
Woah the beginning of this songs can be heard in the Omegas in Freelancer.
Wow. Very beautiful.
And I'm really glad that I did, as for it changes my view of the entire soundtrack.
`Hello and welcome to Most Haunted’

Piece of Art.
I love this song and wish I had the drive to make my own cover of it.
This is it everyone… the song we are thinking about 20 years later, and the masterpiece that it is.
This music makes me think of a wooded area untouched by man. Birds flying by. Bears and deers walking. A giant water fall
this song turns up everywhere. reacently heard it on top gear and underbelly

best song from the whole game
This is my favourite song of all song in SC3.!
I Love This.
This is just gorgeous... I always loved Sims music but this is beyond spectacular!!
You know, I never realized this until now, even having played both eons ago.... but this track would fit well in Homeworld in the right circumstances.

it is simply gorgeous
The beginning part was used in Australian TV-show Deadly Women, the episodes are in YT but I can't remember which episodes they were.
i have been loooking for this song for ages it was on mist haunted
Obviously this is the best one.
its like its going from an urban city at night to a clear crystal scene and then back and towards the end the whole city building up
My goosebumps have goosebumps ;)
OMG that music is so fckn awesome
2:12 sounds like the beginning of a movie. so beautiful it puts fucking tears in my eyes OMG i love this track so much!!!

Yeah, last time I watched Lara Croft was 2 years ago lmfao
It's a stock sample. That's why it can be heard in a spectrum of commercial stuff.
You're thinking of another song that sounds similar called Terra Firma by Delerium.
I noticed this too :)
History Channel loves using this one for their "end of the world OMG" shows. Especially the beginning part with the backwards guitar string.
this deserves so much more views.
The beginning sounds like a city had just been wiped out by a nuclear bomb, the dust clears as no one is left alive and the city lay in ruin.
The beginning of this song used to be on Third Watch.
My favorite Sim City 4 song!
I swear some of this is in Freelancer for PC.

Yup. A lot of these kinds of songs (especially from SC4, funnily enough) are used in documentarys and other things.
the very end of the song, 5:21 is used in Slappy's Theme Song from Dead Rising 2.

According to the wiki article it will be along Feb 2013, along with a few other sources.
